These people are not tartars, tater is a derogatory way of saying gipsies in Norwegian. We were mistaken sometimes for tartars, but the word in this use, really derived from german täter meaning a criminal.

Nei det er nok ikke så enkelt. Du kan kalle deg reisende men ikke tater. Tater er av romfolket.
