I'm not a basketball fan, but I played the heck out of Double Dribble. That was a fun game. That and Dr. J vs Larry Bird. Loved breaking the backboard on a dunk. That was epic back in the day.
Double Dribble was so good I remember the Christmas I got it and played versus my uncle. What a great game it was and what beautiful times to experience as a kid.
True but sports games early days cost less than 100 thousand to develop now its 100 million. Even for the love of basketball, it's not worth it. Also, to license an NBA game now costs 200 million/ year. Blame the NBA.
Those games were just good games. Everything was about creating the best game possible. These days its only about money. Games are rigged, because everybody needs to win. In game purchases are through the roof. I can't find games I like anymore. It's all the same shit.
I really wish they would make a Barkley shut up and jam except I know micro transactions would ruin it... Not to mention I bet they would make it Draymond shut up and jam too...
It's hard to express how fun NBA Jam was when it originally came out. Similar with NHL 94, FIFA 98, and Madden back in 90s. Arcade-style sports games of the 90s weren't the most realistic, but incredibly fun.
In this new video, we present the evolution of shooting mechanics in basketball games since 1974. This is an exhaustive list; if any games are missing, please feel free to mention them in the comments. Enjoy, thanks.
We used to have so many options. Sports games are monopolized these days. It looks like we peaked around 2007. Everything since then has just been refinments. It’s funny seeing all the NBA Jam ripoffs.
There's only one NBA game now the 2k series which has been the same without much advancements since almost 10 years now. Not even worth buying it anymore
So many good memories! I loved Run and Gun, NBA Jam and NBA Live 95 - the action/spectacle, camera angles and solid gameplay. So much competition from the different publishers made basketball games force new ideas and concepts to be generated. Now we have NBA 2K for what that's worth
Coach K changed everything! We loved breaking the backboard 2nd half.Live 94 was lit even without Jordan, Sprewell filled his shoes. Live 95 was the first game you could create your player and as a bonus you could add rookies and old school players already created by putting their name in. This probably my all time favorite game.
Dr. J and Larry Bird was such an awesome game! I remember you could shatter the backboard and then the guy that would come out to sweep it up would yell at you
I swear seeing all these games brings back memories of a much simpler time than this. I use to have some of them on Sega Genesis. Especially NBA Jam, Barkley's shut up and jam, College Slam, NBA Live 95, Vitale's Awesome Baby! College hoops. I even played most of them in the arcades and consoles.
One on one dr j vs bird!! I loved that game. My parents had an IBM XT that we played on. Laker versus celtics and the nba playoffs was awesome too. NBA jam is still my fav though
Missing is the very popular NES console Nekketsu! Street Basket: Ganbare Dunk Heroes, released in 1993. In my opinion one of the best basketball games for the NES.
Sports games peaked in the 90's. They still haven't made a better basketball game than NBA Jam, or a better baseball game than Big Hurt, or a better football game than Super Tecmo Bowl, or a better racing game than Demolition Derby 2, or a better Hockey game since Ice Hockey. Pitiful.
Am I crazy or does that look too good to be the C64 version of TV Sports Basketball? I'd swear that was the Amiga or MS Dos VGA version. Man I played most of these games, good memories.
Missed run n gun on the 3DO and nba jam tournament edition on 32x i had wireless remotes then with the 32x it was awesome miss those days. I dont even play the 2ks anymore.
ARCH RIVALS WAS THE TRUTH!!! I used to play religiously at my neighborhood corner store! It was so fun punching and knocking opponents to the floor, anything to keep them from scoring……it just added another element to trying to score, to avoid getting punched on the way to the rim! I preferred it over NBA Jams to be honest……
NBA Jam still a banger
Always will be. That game has legendary status.
For sure.
Lol Starks for 3! Yes!!
It was the absolute best
I’ve come to the comments to see this
NBA Live from 95-2007. So many great memories.
Yep the downfall must be studied it was superior to 2k after 2007 Live vanished
Its not even close. What we have now is inferior in every way @dadisajo9
When Double Dribble showed up on the NES... everyone had to step up their basketball game development.
Exactly. Like Tecmo Bowl. We are the uncle's of this evolution 😂😂😂😂
It was awesome. We always used to make fun of how it sounded like "Double Ribble" 🤣
I’d love to know how many hours I logged between that and Blades Of Steel.
@@detroitpolak9904 That was another banger of a game.
@@messiahshow unfortunately I think my total hours for those two games far exceeded my hours logged for homework LOL.
I miss the days of having so many different options ,now it's just Madden and NBA 2k
Do u remember NBA live?
True but sports games early days cost less than 100 thousand to develop now its 100 million. Even for the love of basketball, it's not worth it.

0:10 best game of all time 😂
NBA live sucked though lol
@@shawbrothers18nba live was great through the 90s until about 2002.
The 1990s games actually feel like video games, and are so much fun. Have more fun with those than the current 2k games.
Double Dribble for Nintendo and NBA Jam with the "boom shakalaka, he's on fire 🔥!" ,were the two I played and remember most from back in the day.
Those games were just good games. Everything was about creating the best game possible. These days its only about money. Games are rigged, because everybody needs to win. In game purchases are through the roof. I can't find games I like anymore. It's all the same shit.
@@therobot7254 I agree with that. Great graphics but trash games nowadays
I really wish they would make a Barkley shut up and jam except I know micro transactions would ruin it... Not to mention I bet they would make it Draymond shut up and jam too...
Na, you were just a kid nostalgia something you can't experience the same anymore as adult
It's hard to express how fun NBA Jam was when it originally came out. Similar with NHL 94, FIFA 98, and Madden back in 90s.
Arcade-style sports games of the 90s weren't the most realistic, but incredibly fun.
i still love the arcade style concept, it isnt hyper realistic but its very funny to play
Wow another NHL '94 player, wild! And yea, SNES NBA Jam was amazing, especially all the secret characters. I remember playing as Bill Clinton lmao
@@diamondthree yeah, the bill clinton feature was outstanding, imagine today let mr biden or mr trump play the game XD XD

Yes
А где Slam 'N Jam 95 от Panasonic 3DO?
Double Dribble back in the day had dunks closeups. That was next level at the time. Good memories.
Heck even cutscenes of the player
Taking a dunk.
Nba street also fun.
Hoops in the 80’s and NBA Jam in the 90’s was my ones though… “From downtown… boom-shakalaka!” As you shatter the backboard with Shaq🤣
yeah bro!
NBA 2K on DreamCast revolutionized basketball gameplay for me as a child !
This is amazing! A lot of flashbacks and games I completely forgot about. How did you even come up with all of these?!?
Atari got their first basketball game right.😂
Atari basketball tho.😂
Dang they got it right.
NBA Jam changed everything when it was released. Thanks for showing Iverson tons of respect in the video too.
We used to have so many options. Sports games are monopolized these days.

Give the first one's credit they tried.
Like how Atari got their first basketball
Game right.😂
Dang Atari stepping on toes early.
I think it’s garbage how monopolized it is. Where’s the incentive to make improvements when you have zero competition?
true!
My entire life flashing before my eyes. Awesome.

Nothing significant has changed since 2003.
that is
The comment that I am looking for.
Did you not watch the whole video?
23:14 JAM IT! in the Commodore 64 came out 2015. That sh*t was next level.

Had “0” idea most of these ever existed that Scottie pippen one looks like a movie this compilation is epic ❤
I'd completely forgotten how blown away I was with NBA Live 96 and it's graphics.
That was dope!’ 🙌🏽
Why is there a screenshot for Pat Riley's Basketball for 1974 in the thumbnail?
Great video
Thanks!
22:02 The crowd's reaction to the three point shot. 😂
A little too much😂
I always thought the pinnacle of basketball games was NBA street back in the early 2000s
Dr. J and Larry Bird was such an awesome game! I remember you could shatter the backboard and then the guy that would come out to sweep it up would yell at you
I loved this game!!!
lol. I just wrote nearly the same thing. I forgot about the cleanup guy. 😂
and his moustache wiggled as he swept. hahah
3:40 Fantastic graphic!
incredible video, please games WWF,WCW, WWE
Man the David Robinson and the Coach K bring back memories. So many classics
@@MichiganMan923 I didn’t see coach k on there….I clearly loved that…first game with the throwback teams
I really liked the music of the master system one, sounds like a videogame and it looks like a fun casual game, great basketball!
Live was the first basketball VG that I ever felt truly invested in. Actually replicating the NBA players' stats and skills was addictive AF.
11:04 my boy did a lay from top of the key LOL
I’ve been here for most of the evolution
I found my childhood favorite College Slam ‘96 ❤ it was very fun, you could fly off screen before dunking and burning the net 🔥
I play basketball in real life, i find that it helps me a little in basketball video games with the strategies.

24:22 From here foward the video is about the evolution of slot machines games, with basketball hidden stages.
Live 2000 and the mothership connection 💥
1:15 Street Sports™ actually looks great for its time
NCAA basketball for the SNES blew me away with the 3d perspective way back then.
I appreciate that you added the super pro basketball on intellivision from 1987
One on one dr j vs bird!! I loved that game. My parents had an IBM XT that we played on. Laker versus celtics and the nba playoffs was awesome too. NBA jam is still my fav though
Coach K College Basketball 🏀 and all of the College games 😊
Yes coach k basketball was so underrated
@@Ronstar45ongod I did not see it on this list….
Played the ever loving crap out of NBA Live 95
The Dr. J and Larry Bird game was awesome. Shattering the glass on a dunk. It was a fun game, especially for the C64. Good times as a child.
Super real was ahead of its time
Damn run & gun looks dope

*Hold Up! Let's take a moment to appreciate this* 👉00:01
The simplicity of this, yet manages to encompass the basis of a Ball-n-Hoop!
Arch Rivals looked so good for its time
😂 Check out super high impact football 🏈
The potential Sega Dreamcast had... So sad 😢
Cinemaware with Tv sports was in other level 💯
I still Play NBA street 2. Love this Game
Good memories. We have come along ways
That thumbnail is wildly misleading.
NBA Jam. All day
He's on Fire! Haha
Happy National Basketball Day 🏀 from VGE 🕹️🎮!
Funniest thing to me is at 1:18 and how they all suited up to play in someone’s driveway lol
Konami's Double Dribble was way ahead of its time!
0:45 lol the opposing team even cheers when you hit a free throw
Its crazy we used to get around 5-10 bball games a year now its down to only 2k. This is very sad for me
Double Dribble is definitely an all time classic!!!
0:10 best game of all time 😂
This shows that the 90s were the best era for gaming. So much variety than now
NBA IN THE ZONE 2 WAS THE REAL DEAL BACK IN 96🥳🥳🥳
This brings back memories
I remember getting NCAA back in 92 and thinking.." It can't get any better than this"
Happy to see here my first basketball videogame ever: David Robinson's Supreme Court.
It had avannced graphics and gameplay for that era.
Tecmo Super NBA basketball is so underrated
One of my favorites ever
That and Tecmo Football
I wore out NCAA March Madness 06. Loved that game and I'm not even really a basketball fan.
I used to love to play ‘Arch Rivals’ at the arcade against total strangers.
2K has been the best since the Dreamcast
0:50 rofl😂...the applause

Double Dribble, Hoops, Tecmo Basketball and Lakers vs Celtics were the games we played most as kids. Especially Tecmo basketball. I loved Charlotte.
Jordan bs bird looked way different on nes what system
Was that??
01:16 looks phenomenal for the era.
Once the competition dropped off you can really see how little the graphics or game play changed.
NBA 2k1 on Dreamcast was the best, best controller/controls.
We used to have code words at work . " Hey u trying to play some 2k ?"
"Okay ill bring my controller"
2k= Mary Jane
Controller= cigar or rolling paper
Once NBA 2k7 dropped, they really took over completely. Their gameplay and graphics started creating distance from the competition
They did, although for me 2K5 on Xbox had already surpassed Live.
So yall just going to leave NBA Jam out like that.. That was the only one I like playing.. He's on fire, is it the shoes.. 😂
boom shakalaka ❤
@diegogatti7397 Exactly 💯

NBA 2K3 & 2K7 are the most pivotal to the next era of modern NBA games to follow.
Double dribble is still arguably the best basketball game ever created...
Sime of the 80s basket games were actually very impressive for their times.
DOUBLE DRIBBLE!! That immediately came to mind the first couple seconds but I couldn’t remember the name! That and Blades Of Steel.
NBA Showdown was my childhood! I'm going to have to buy a Super Nintendo and get that game again.
