As I recall, it's literally the same entity Half-Life 1 uses for... well, the tanks. In that game, they can rotate and shoot at where the player currently is. It's pretty much unchanged since. You can do some wild things in mapping with func_tank.
By coincidence I found out somewhat recently about Portal 2's portal gun prop being way WAY bigger than the actual portal gun. In Source games I find that in first-person things always look smaller than they really are, so I was running around in third-person to find out the real sizes of various things relative to Chell, and when I got to the portal gun I was like "Why is it the size of half her body" 😆
@Qurad not entirely some of the games have their code released as an sdk but the actual engine code and the code for games like portal have never been **officially** released (you can still find them if you know where to look)
Pretty sure the reason you're not supposed to look into the operational end of the device is a combination of why you shouldn't look directly at the sun and why you shouldn't look into the operational end of a gun, that is, blindingly bright lights and potential harm from the portal projectile thingy
the rotating door entity is just an entity that rotates a set amount of degrees. It's the most efficient and logical way to achieve a setup such as this, because the only other rotating entity is one that rotates based on time instead of degrees which would force the devs to do a headache inducing amount of math to figure out how much to rotate it since the rotation entity is subject to friction.
@nuclearshill I've made this setup before using func_rotating. If it rotates 30 degrees/second, then you just need to stop it every 3 seconds. The friction property is completely optional.
the visual demonstration with the turret is _phenomenal,_ I almost forgot to follow along as I was so distracted by how GOOD the script/editing of the whole thing was
I’m guessing it’s actually because Chell is stuck in the ice (the room at the start of chamber 2) until she’s allowed to emerge when glados is done talking and the door opens. And you’re skipping the portal wait time, hence the Mariah Carey “skip”. The glass you have to look through also kind of looks like ice, and is the subject by which you glitch the cup shard through.
9:32 the portal speedrunning community certainly has some unique names for strategies/tech 'Pear', 'Mango', 'Leap Frog', 'Wine', 'Dorito Shot', 'Egg', 'Omelette', 'ABH Over goodigOODLOOK', 'cube++', and 'Dylan Corner Kebab Restaurant Skip 2025' all have meaning in the context of a portal speedrun also dont even get me started on Save Glitch vs Button Save Glitch vs Item Save Glitch
my favorite game speedrun strat names has to be titanfall 2. moon boots, super fastball deluxe, snuggle slide, FTL, boomy zoomy river jump. incredible all around
Okay, so, might not be most accurate, but watched one of the FAST Portal 2 speedruns (I *think* it was FAST52, might be FAST50) and the speedrunner briefly explained that all Portal speedrun techs will be named after food... just because. No idea about the famous people, and he might have mentioned cube++ (probably cuz they're all nerds and it's c++) Edit: FAST52 Portal 2 Singleplayer speedrun by Msushi is the one!
The Portal speedrunning community's obsession with being as new runner unfriendly as possible with those fucking names is exactly why I quit trying to run it after like a week. It wasn't too hard to practice the tricks, it was too hard just to know what they were in the first place.
Marblr feels like portal's version of Vsauce, you start the video thinking it'll be about portal and end up learning about the history of clocks and the definition of glitch
@David-bh7hs The previous video is about 30% as advertised and then the entire remainder is a lesson in the history of timekeeping and how we as a species view time
17:09 minor correction: the mariah carey strat is still the most optimal route in the inbounds legacy category as singularity warping (the different glitch mentioned) is banned there
I think it's called Mariah Carrie because it unfreezes the vphysics model, you know like the meme people post in the fall when stores start playing the forbidden song early.
@PixyEm exactly, speedrun cuts shouldn’t have normal names, here are some of my faves Dramstrat(super Mario odyssey)-dram discovered it, and didn’t want his name attached. Eric(pizza tower)-they were discussing what to call the trick, and someone suggested Eric, this is just a human name Autoscroller skip skip(Celeste) they figured out tech called auto scroller skip, and then they found a way to skip that Snowdram(super Mario odyssey), dram wasn’t involved in this one, they just liked to name stuff after dram
07:23 so the gun got rubbed by the radio and now shoots its portals all over the floor. They say all Aperture Science tech are sentient but I didn't think they'd be THAT "sentient"
Desynchronizing the quake hitbox and the havok hitbox is the core behind so many advanced speedrunning tricks in HL2 and Portal(2) it's honestly beautiful
honestly incredible how well the Source Engine works, or works at all, considering the mess of duct tape that it is. I never even thought about the fact that yes, QPhysics does indeed stand for Quake Physics from John Carmack. Or that the engine actually still uses the quake collision system for anything, but I guess they never got rid of that, eh?
@screret4794 QPhysics has never been replaced by any engines or games descending from Quake. Major examples that still use it would be all COD games, Apex Legends and Half-Life: Alyx.
@screret4794 "quake physics" / "quake hitbox" (and "qphysics" as well) are community names, I don't think the code ever refers to it as such. "VPhysics" and "Havok" are official names though Source basically has two physics systems, one inherited from Quake through Goldsrc, which governs collision with brushes, is more stable and faster but less detailed; and the other one being Havok, which is more detailed but slower (HL2 had to run on 2004 hardware) and more prone to props spazzing out; another way to look at it is simply having both a more simplified physics model and a more detailed physics model. It's not quite right to say they "never got rid of the quake collision system", the code they have later on is modified from and thus inherits concepts from Quake's physics, but it's not like they're using the exact same code. People just call it "quake hitbox" for convenience. Half Life 2's engine code is officially publicly available as part of the Source SDK, so if you're really curious you can take a look there.
@atlev 20 million years from now the latest survival sandbox will still have john carmack's code in it he's like hydrogen atoms, the building block of literally everything when you get deep enough into it
it's called mariah carey because you're forcing the portal gun to happen earlier than it's supposed to, in reference to how "all i want for christmas" always gets played earlier than it's supposed to, in october of all months
The Portal 2 gun actually putting a smaller, real portal gun inside itself is hilarious. Reminds me of that clip of a guy with a mauser pistol with the full stock, and after running out of ammo he unclips the end of the stock and pulls another mauser pistol out of it. Keeping a gun in your gun, just in case. Also the timing is wacky as I was just re-watching Marblr videos yesterday and suddenly a new one. I pray to Mariah for this luck to continue.
ah yes. weapon bounding boxes. as someone who's made maps with weapons placed into them, it was a nightmare trying to get them oriented a certain way sometimes *cough css*
I can think of at LEAST 3 reasons why this glitch should in fact count as a glitch. 1. Fragments of coffee mugs passing through emancipation grids is definitely not intentional. 2. Being able to bring items between levels is explicitly a glitch, as the emancipation grid exists solely as a means to prevent this from happening. 3. You have to then glitch the mug fragment through a solid glass wall before you throw it. All this combined shows beyond a shadow of a doubt that this mariah carey glitch is 100% for certain a glitch, and that is the only reasonable designation it could possibly have!
It totally makes sense why this issue wasn't caught in playtesting too - the radios were only added in a post-launch update to tease Portal 2. Before that change, the only physics prop in this test chamber are the cameras, which you can only detach from the wall _using_ the portal gun.
Like seriously, it's such a funny response and I can't fault the turret for it. The turret just had its soul ripped from its body, it can be a bit upset lol
that door object is such a cool example of developers going out of their way to use existing objects to accomplish new things, whether it was first done on half life or portal
GLaDOS when she sees chell smash a coffee mug so she can slot a shard of it through the glass to tap the portal gun and it somehow rotates it 90 degrees to save 5 seconds on the chamber
The P1 pedestal gun being attached and detached from a DOOR blew my mind. All the time you were talking I was wondering why they never used a tank that had its target changed between four info_target entities. Seems far easier than getting the timing right for the parenting toggle.
15:22 Perhaps it's more accurate to say the fake portal gun is really large, rather than the actual portal gun being really small 🤔 I wonder why Valve made the prop_dynamic so big though. Maybe playtesters had trouble seeing it when it was actual size lol
4:18 poor turret, didn't deserve getting its soul violently sucked out and then kicked over from the ethereal realm. Give that poor turret some cake damnit!
From a comment (so take with a grain of salt) it was supposed to be named "we found 4104" (an old portal build thought lost until 2024) but the user who posted it had Mariah Carey as the thumbnail, so that name stuck instead
I've seen like five different, incompatible explanations of Mariah Carey in these comments so I'm starting to wonder if there's any reasoning behind it at all lol
This sort of issue is why I always preferred the name "No Major Glitches" over "Glitchless" as a category for most games. Yes, you obviously still end up asking "how is _this_ a major glitch but not _that_?" but at least the fact that there is subjectivity is clear in the name of the category itself, rather than "Glitchless" which sounds more objective
well now the problem is just kicked down the road bc the argument becomes "well what's a 'major' glitch vs not". "glitch less" as in fewer glitches is always true
I think you have to have some hard line in the sand somewhere based on how the behaviour is achieved. If you're relying on an engine or mechanic oversight to break a core rule of the game in some way, it probably counts. Memory bug warp? Obviously. Portal under door? Level design oversight, weird but not a glitch. Clipping through the level? Jail Quake strafe running? Do not pass go Skipping a cutscene trigger? Not a glitch unless you use a glitch to skip the trigger. Pushing the portal gun? Uses an oversight in how the portal gun is rotated, glitch. Killing an enemy with an unintended damage source you brought with you? Not a glitch. Killing an enemy with something you get from a memory bug? Glitch.
16:00 a tank?! Where do they pull that asset from? Half-Life 1? That's insane. Great editing, by the way. Always love learning more about the Source Engine.
just took a screenshot, cropped it to just the qr code, hit the button that highlights text and other stuff like qr codes (apple device only), tapped the qr code and there ya go.
@EggMonkey i tried literally the exact same thing but no matter how much i cropped it the qr code recogniser on my samsung just wasn't working I even resorted to pulling up the video on a different device to take a pic but it still couldn't read it so i js gave up
Was pondering the nuances behind using the duck test before my thoughts were interrupted by an instinctual fear response to the 100% Orange Juice music

who parked their tank... on my portal gun ... ?
@sillypinkmoth I did! ☝️😀
As I recall, it's literally the same entity Half-Life 1 uses for... well, the tanks. In that game, they can rotate and shoot at where the player currently is. It's pretty much unchanged since. You can do some wild things in mapping with func_tank.

The portal 2 gun being a fake prop is crazy, but the smaller secret portal gun rotated by a tank is even crazier.
Valve made some interesting coding back then

I like how it was foreshadowed well enough for me to instantly go "There's an invisible portal gun inside the fake portal gun."
these games might be good
By coincidence I found out somewhat recently about Portal 2's portal gun prop being way WAY bigger than the actual portal gun. there's something so comfy about how goofy the source engine is ya know? it's just nice :)
The best part is that people can actually look at the code and investigate things!
@Marblr it's open source?
@Qurad not entirely some of the games have their code released as an sdk but the actual engine code and the code for games like portal have never been **officially** released (you can still find them if you know where to look)
@Qurad Everything is open source if you can read binary *wink*. Also decompilers
@Qurad some versions of the source engine are source-available (so you can read the source code but you can't just use it for everything)

Everytime I speedrun chamber 02 I'm going to be visualizing an invisible door now. Thanks for that.
“Mug shot” is a much better name for the glitch than “Mariah Carey” tbh

Func_tank is indeed a holdover from Half-Life 1, used for the enemy tank turrets and also the gun turrets that can be used by the player.
15:00 missed opportunity to say “this portal gun is a spy”
I love Portal, I wanna give all the little Portal guys a little smooch 😎
holy shit new portalkoek2012 video just dropped
the qr code in the top right at 0:44 leads to Marblr’s Patreon which tbh made me laugh
THANK YOU I've been trying to scan it for like 5 minutes but my phone just wasn't picking it up
just took a screenshot, cropped it to just the qr code, hit the button that highlights text and other stuff like qr codes (apple device only), tapped the qr code and there ya go.
@EggMonkey i tried literally the exact same thing but no matter how much i cropped it the qr code recogniser on my samsung just wasn't working
I even resorted to pulling up the video on a different device to take a pic but it still couldn't read it so i js gave up
samsung device qr code detection must not be as good as apple device qr code detection. your issue might be that it’s samsung and not iphone/ipad.
I thought it was gonna Rickroll tbh.
Close enough hello Msushi
Was pondering the nuances behind using the duck test before my thoughts were interrupted by an instinctual fear response to the 100% Orange Juice music
OH MY GOD WHAT IS 100%OJ EVEN
@sheepcommander_
Sensory overload party game that takes the most valuable thing away from you: time
4:07, this is so reminiscent of a quantum particles position
