Putin hasn't taken physical punishment, but it's not accurate to say his invasion has been consequence-free. Russia's economy has been gutted, as have his stocks of Soviet era weapons (which constitutes much of what he's been prosecuting this war with). He's had over $300 billion of Russian funds frozen. Much of the world no longer transacts business with Russia, and likely won't for the remainder of his life. Putin's personal and political standing has been greatly diminished, and he is no longer able to travel to the West. He's a wanted war criminal. NATO has grown since February 2022, the exact opposite of what he was hoping for. Syria has collapse. Iran has been weakened. Putin understands that his own political and even personal survival hangs in the balance.

Pre-90’s Russia-empire didn’t have a middle class, so it’s difficult to say that it can soak up sanctions/financial penalties now based on the Soviet times. St Petersburg and Moscow are FULL of middle class people now, and there is no social infrastructure (communist legacy) to fall back on. The farms, communities are all basically geared towards export and import based financial models and to gear it back to soviet-style economy would take longer than Putin has left.

Indeed. If Russia simply stopped attacking and went for consolidation Ukraine would have a much harder time getting their land back. Slowly giving up pieces of land is the carrot that leads Putin off the economic cliff. It's like all these people don't understand how pyrhhic victories work.
Russia isn't even close to a collapse. What are you talking about? The moment Putin really gets worried about losing there will be a full mobilization of the entire country for war and martial law with a massive Stalinesque repression of his own people, importation of a few hundred thousand North Korean soldiers and any army of a million drunks marching West into Ukraine. I think people in the West are in total denial of what's really happening here. Russia is never going to stop, and Putin is just one of the many who wants this war. Even if he goes, it will continue. Wake up.
@ You will know that Russia is close to collapse when Putin establishes martial law, sends his secret police against his own people, represses the slightest word against him, mobilizes the entire country, and creates an army of a million men to march into Ukraine. All of that will happen before Russia collapses. The good news is Russia isn’t near collapse and none of that needs to happen.
The human cost of war is immense. Lives are lost, families are torn apart, and entire communities are destroyed. The psychological scars of war can last for generations, leaving lasting trauma and suffering. Beyond the human cost, wars also have a devastating impact on the environment. They pollute the air and water, destroy forests and wildlife, and leave behind a legacy of unexploded bombs and landmines. The economic cost of war is also staggering, diverting resources from essential services like healthcare and education. In short, war is a catastrophe for all involved. It is a reminder of the worst aspects of humanity and the urgent need for peace.
The guy you interviewed doesn't exactly know Ukraine's demographics. There are almost no young people you can mobilize, look at the age pyramid. If Zelenski passes that law it will be the sacrifice of a whole generation
Russia is already on red if you account for corporate debt and bankurptcies. By far they could possibly bail out only military industry debt. If other sectors will file for bankruptcy then goodbye banking system.
The Russian banking system is already a dead-man walking if Putin doesn't get his frozen foreign assets back. Putin forced them into 300+ billion dollar of loans to the Russian arms industry which they'll never get back. And there is no way the Russian state is in any position anymore to cushion the blow when banks are starting to topple as a result of it.
@@Jimmy-ye3wg Russian state guarantees loans for military industry and as i already said Russia can afford to bail out only this sector and obviosly will have to since after war this sector will collapse. I dont think BRICS will bail out any falling Russian corpo and foreign debt hasnt increased since start of war anyway, so no China wont help Russia for their "friendship"

In wars where the underdog is attempting to expel the invader, it’s incumbent to prolong the conflict as much as possible. Major powers have been thrown out this way by truly ragtag armies. The Americans, the British, the French, the Chinese, the Soviets, the Portuguese, the Spanish, the Ottomans, all caved when they saw no end to their respective conflicts. In that sense, it’s rather foolish for the Ukranians to allow themselves to be forced to the table where they will lose some of their territory for having done it. If I were Zelensky, I would have repeatedly made clear to all that this conflict cannot end until the Russians get entirely out to the borders they had already recognized. Indeed, Vladimir Putin himself signed a treaty recognizing the borders in 2003. It is this very treaty that makes any subsequent annexation illegal even by Russian law.
Whatever is decided, it’s UKRAINE. Ukrainians are never going to give up that land in a hundred thousand years, and no Muscovite will ever sleep soundly in his bed on Ukrainian ground as long as he sleeps on Ukrainian earth, whether it’s Donetsk or Crimea. Come the year 3000, it will be Ukraine, always. When the sun rises in Kiev, the sun will set in Moscow. 🇺🇦🇺🇸🇺🇦
You do wonder what these experts have in their heads when they are all commenting on this war and they can and often do come to quite differing and contradictory observations. Eg. Yes, Putin can ride this war out. No, Putin is desperate for a ceasefire... Right, I am off to get an accurate update from my gran😅😅😅
It's called opinions and everyone has a different one. That opens up the door to what we seem to have forgotten as healthy debate. There's a lot of what Tim and others have said that I don't personally agree with, but that doesn't mean that I have to resort to making cheap insults against them. Maybe it's because some of us, who are in our senior years and have grown up during times, that those amongst us who are younger have not, has created the inability to see opinions from both sides of the spectrum.
I agree. Russia’s wars are diverting us from making efforts to develop human existence for the better. Let us make sure that the Muscovites never attack us again.
When Ukraine could not attack the territory of a nation invading them and using its' own territory as a "safe place"" talks were of more interest. Now Russian military-industrial complex is being systematically destroyed, every day their war fighting ability is being eroded. Of course Ukraine will enter talks, under the condition that Russia leaves all Ukrainian territory.. Perhaps Russia will use the US concept of Greenland is needed for National Security. Russia is closer to Greenland than the USA.
Listening to this from America, I found myself doing a double-take hearing the UK described as part of Europe. It’s a separate island (and a half). It basically voted to secede from Europe a few years back. If it’s European on the basis of history and cultural traditions, you would then also argue the US is part of Europe. Sadly, from the outside the UK looks more and more like a mid-sized island nation with a glorious past going through a very painful transition.
Weakling politicians, who don't keep their word, are sickening to me. I was taught that you're only as good as your word! God be with the valiant Ukrainians, bless them.
Well, that was a cold shower… Anyway, just a comment from a Norwegian on the peace price thing: a statesman that choose to annex territory from a neighbouring country to Norway will most certainly not be considered for a Nobel peace prize. I think the Norwegian population (although we have a lot of Trump supporters) regard international borders to be holy, so to speak. And the Nobel peace prize comity consists of Norwegians only. Anyway 2, I think Trump is totally correct in demanding that the European countries to step up their military spending. 💯 And ASAP that is. Russia is not our only problem
Last time I checked Austria wasn’t a member of NATO so not sure why they would have a say in Ukraine joining. I have to say James, not your most knowledgeable guest. Has people who ask for Ukraine to lower the conscription age ever looked at their demographics? There are very few young people, so moving down the conscription age won't have a large impact.
I had doubt when your guest claimed without serious rationale that UKR needed peace more than RUS but when he started talking about “Hungaria”, you lost me! I’m out.
Russian forces may be closer to collapse than we think. Two recent Russian telegram videos show soldiers in handcuffs and chains on their way to the front. Any army that has to do this is in a very bad situation. During the Libyan civil war rebels discovered that a lorry driver hadn’t fled his vehicle when it came under fire because he had been chained to his seat. Gadaafis regime collapsed soon after.
1:30 russia s advancing? at that rate it will LITERALLY TAKE THEM 150 YEARS TO ARRIVE AT KYIV. This man is a FOOL... THE RUSSIANS , NOT THE URKAINIANS NEED A PAUSE
Unfortunately I don't think Putin will recruit in Moscow / St Petersburg. But if he does you can bet it will be from the poor sections of their society. Those with no voice.
He had already lost me but when he mentioned Austria!!! as one of the 4 or 5 countries who may not support NATO membership for Ukraine when they are not even in NATO.
The point of soaking up punishment suggests that nothing has changed in the last 80 years and I do not think that's the case. When looking at Ukraine, a country comparable in overall mindset, millions of people fled, unwilling to die for their country. Putin knows that there is a simular problem with the Russian heartland around Moskau and St-Petersburg, the reason why he does not want a blanket mobilization in that region. When pushed hard enough, Russia wil collapse like in 1917. And that collapse highlighted also the cultural differences between the provinces inside Russia.

St Petersburg and Moscow are FULL of middle class people now, and there is no social infrastructure (communist legacy) to fall back on. The farms, communities are all basically geared towards export and import based financial models and to gear it back to soviet-style economy would take longer than Putin has left.
Putin made the gargantuan and reckless mistake, the poor class pays it.
Russia need negotiations much more urgently. Ukraine has EU economic support for the entire 2025.
Where did you find that clown?

You lost me on the first sentence. Russia needs the pause more. Without a rearming their collapse is certain.
Another 'expert' who doesn't know what's really going on
Wake up.
You really think you "know" better than him ?
After watching few youtube videos everybody is an expert now.
I totally agree. Let us stop Russia’s constant wars. Let us make sure they will never attack us again!
In the battle of Singapore, Japan lost 1700 soldiers and took almost 100,000 British POWs.
This war isn't measured in success on land in the eastern Ukraine. So many other factors are important.
Avstria isn't in Nato
That’s a good clarification. Hence they cannot object to Ukraine becoming a NATO member 👍😊
Ex diplomat Tim Willasey-Wilsey is expressing a point of view. I suggest it is just that.
Didn't India and China agree to the sanctions against Russia? just recently.
Please, don’t mistake “popularity” for “fear.”
Don't worry at all. People in Moscow do not concern themselves with either consideration.
The guy you interviewed doesn't exactly know Ukraine's demographics. There are almost no young people you can mobilize, look at the age pyramid. If Zelenski passes that law it will be the sacrifice of a whole generation
You mean just like Russia.
Yes, idk, he is perhaps wise to hold back young men til they have started a family. Ukraine needs children
When was the last time Russia did a mobilization?@@paulmasterson386

You should have waited till 52 seconds, then he introduced the talking head.
Not when they get Russian state guaranteed loans and subsidies from other large BRICS members.
@@Jimmy-ye3wg, China and India both don't have the cash to prop up a falling Russian economy. South Africa is in the middle of rolling blackouts because they can't adequately supply their electrical grid. Brazil couldn't care less about Russia's situation.

They are neutral !

Not convinced how much of an expert this guy is.
I noticed that he failed to mention that Russia collapsed in the late 80s so Russia isn’t invincible whereas Ukraine is on deaths ground.
Good point, I think. As I often write here on YT:
Ukrainians need their territory back. All of it! 🇺🇦💪🕊🇳🇴

The guest is absolutely correct about Putin’s being able to ride out “unpopularity”.
This is not analysis but an old man with an opinion...
Maybe it's because some of us, who are in our senior years and have grown up during times, that those amongst us who are younger have not, has created the inability to see opinions from both sides of the spectrum.
all that money spent in the war could make a massive difference to the wellbeing of developing countries.
We left the eu not europe
Your guest is wrong. New paradigm . The times they are a changing .
Weakling politicians, who don't keep their word, are sickening to me. I was taught that you're only as good as your word! God be with the valiant Ukrainians, bless them.
I don't think there will be sudden break throughs by Russia on the front line. They haven't been able to capitalize on significant gains thus far.
Misleading headline.
Which is less costly? Western troops in Ukraine or NATO membership?
The UK has about as much of an army as the better 3rd world countries. Plus an aging airforce!
Last time I checked Austria wasn’t a member of NATO so not sure why they would have a say in Ukraine joining. I have to say James, not your most knowledgeable guest. Other comments highlighted that Russia is not the USSR and their ability to take punishment is not at the same level it was during 40s, 50s etc.
I can't find any sensible or natural link between putler and popularity; why would he need it and how would popularity possibly be relevant to a dictator? unless ruzzia is close to one of their regular revolutions. 🙂 Слава Україна 🇺🇦 з 🇦🇺

The Ukrainian front has moved about fifty miles net on net.
It's cost Russia 800,000 men.
A lot of business orders are now on hold even before the tariffs announcement. Job cuts are coming in many sectors.

A "touch" of vanity????
Putin is finished.
Professor, Austria isn't a NATO country so whether or not it wants Ukraine to be in or out of NATO would be of little consequence. Come on man.
