The SS Charlemagne division had been constituted from several units during the last year of the war. Originally it had about 7,300 men. But suffered huge loses fighting in Pomerania. There were only a handful of men , about 350,who were original by the time of the Battle for Berlin. Apparently, they fought very hard. They knew they had no future back in France.

My grandfather was part of the Blue Division 269 Battalion. Little I know more that the man was in Leningrand, and after Franco wanted his troops back, he stayed until the fall of Berlin. Father was traumatized af with grandfather war stories as a young adult. Im sure Father havent told me like 80% of what Grandfather ever did. But with the hand to hand combat I am still speechless.

@@historyatwar It is a lie that Britain and France declared war on Germany to protect Polish territorial integrity. This was proven at Yalta where Churchill allowed Stalin to subsume Poland into the USSR.
The Ango-Polish mutual assistance pact contained a secret protocol stating Britain would only come to Poland's aid if Poland were to be attacked by Germany (and not if attacked by any other country). This is why war was not declared on the Soviet Union when they invaded Poland from the East.
Do you agree that there were actually other reasons Britain declared war on Germany in 1939? Have you heard of the group called "The Focus" that bankrolled Churchill?

This narrative really brings humanity to the German soldier. I'm not talking about the SS or the Waffen SS or the Einsengruppen. I'm talking about the German grunts the Wehermacth. @@ChesterWortham yes there were high losses in North Africa with about 240,000 Axis troops captured when they surrendered to the Western Allies on 13 May 1943. Stalingrad was much larger with up to 1.5 million casualties for the Axis forces and up to 2.6 million casualties for the Soviet Union forces. By the end of the battle out of 91,000 German soldiers captured only 6,000-5,000 came back in 1955.

I went to Ukraine in April 2022, as a volunteer. I am retired Special Forces 18E, B, F and an RN of nearly 30 years, I have served in 6 wars, almost 10 years at the "Front", as the Ukrainians call the combat zone. It was interesting to see the land over which the Germans and the USSR fought so viciously over. I had an opportunity to see much of Eastern Poland, as well. Beautiful farmland and flat, like it is in Ohio. Relatively under populated due to the countless wars over 1000s of years. Lots of rivers and swamps that act as natural barriers, but once crossed, the next natural barrier is where you make your next stand. As a note the Ukrainians were extremely well educated and motivated, much more so than any of the other soldiers from more than a dozen nations that I helped train. God bless them. Be safe all.

I love this chan. But what really gets me is how the war in ukraine has gotten compared to the german / soviet eastern front campaigns. They are not comparable in the least. The numbers of men and equipment from those battles, crimea, kharkov, stalingrad op citadel , are incomparable to these modern battles we are seeing now. Soviets had Total strength:
    2,300,000 soldiers (155,900-200,000
    Polish People's Army)
    6,250 tanks and SP guns
    7,500 aircraft
    41,600 artillery pieces.
    Germans 36 divisions
    766,750 soldiers
    1,519 AFVs
    2,224 aircraft
    9,303 artillery pieces
In the Berlin Defence Area: about 45,000 soldiers, supplemented by the Berlin police force, Hitler Youth, and 40,000 Volkssturm
For the investment and assault on the Berlin Defence Area: about 1,500,000 soldiers

@@cgardner85 The Germans were not saints, but they didn't have an official policy of rape, looting, and pillaging as the Red Army did. Contrary to popular mythology, the German military was a professional organization. They left most Soviet citizens alone unless they were partisans or Soviet commissars. Rape was a capital offense and German soldiers who violated this prohibition were regularly shot. The Red Army on the other hand, encouraged its conquering soldiers to rape and wantonly murder not just Germans, but everyone who fell under their boot in Eastern Europe. Ask most Eastern Europeans including Poles, Lithuanians, etc. and many will say they preferred the German occupation over the Soviets.

Hold on! Stalin had absolutely no intention of invading Europe at any time! First, he had done a 1937 purge of the Soviet officer's corps to gain control of the Russian Army. The Russo-Finnish War did not go well for the Russians. Stalin was not stupid or a madman like Hitler. He also knew he would have to go up against the Allies and America. 🇺🇸 Plus, he would have given up his plans by moving his forces to the European frontier. Stalin and Putin are two different dictators, and they think two different ways. The Soviet citizens of the time would not have supported Stalin invading Europe, and they detested his rule! thank you 🎌 🚩 🧑‍🎤 🏁
