- We delivered a display of incredible heart and character to secure a goalless draw in the first leg of our Carabao Cup semi-final with Liverpool despite playing with 10 men for more than 67 minutes at Anfield.
With Granit Xhaka sent off midway through the first half for a tackle on Diogo Jota, we stood firm, dug in and showed a steely resolve to frustrate the home side.
Such a performance delighted Mikel Arteta and his staff, and means it will be winner-takes-all in the second leg at Emirates Stadium next week.
With Martin Odegaard, Emile Smith Rowe and Takehiro Tomiyasu all ruled out of this match, numbers were tight and we had to name a young bench.
The hosts, who were almost at full strength apart from those away on Africa Cup of Nations duty, made a fast start and Aaron Ramsdale had to be alert to deal with a teasing Andy Robertson cross.
We soon lost Cedric to injury to further disrupt Arteta’s plans, and not long afterwards Roberto Firmino looked certain to score when he met another cross from the left only for Ben White to clear off the line.
We were up against it, and the task suddenly became even greater when Xhaka was sent off for taking out Diogo Jota as the last man in the 23rd minute.
Arteta reacted immediately by taking off Eddie Nketiah and bringing on Rob Holding and switching to a back three in an effort to stifle the home attack, and it had the desired effect for the rest of the first half.
Immediately after the restart, Takumi Minamino came close with a cross that nearly flew into the top corner as the hosts laid siege to our goal.
But for all their dominance, we stood firm - getting men behind the ball, defending as though our lives depended on it and, led by the superb Bukayo Saka, proving a threat on the break.
Anfield was getting increasingly restless as we entered the final 20 minutes, and with Arteta and his staff willing the team on animatedly from the touchline, we were growing in confidence.
We then carved out a big chance as Kieran Tierney rampaged forward, and his cross was touched on by Saka in the area before taking a shot that Alisson saved.
It was tight and tense, but in the last minute Liverpool were presented with a huge chance when Ramsdale’s punch came to Minamino in the box, but with an open goal he flashed his shot over the bar.
Despite some late pressure, we stood firm to hold out for what felt like a huge draw considering the circumstances. What a display of character.

I feel we have so under utilised Laca in his time with us.
Chambers isn't too good, but he always gives his 100% when playing for the club. Miles ahead of Cedric
He would always be in my squad. 100%. He isn't the quickest, the strongest or the most technical defender, but he can play in 3 different positions and always decently, won't have a 9'5-10 performance but he will never disappoint either. I'd sell Cedric, Holding and Mari before him in defence. Plus now Arteta can use him as DM alongside Lokonga/Odegaard. I would give him a chance since he was very good yesterday.

Defensive masterclass. All credits to Mikel Arteta. He's made it so much better. Briljant from him to choose Ramsdale instead of Neto from Barcelona. White, Gabriel what a, duo. 50 mil for white well spent.
Chambers and Holding also need to be named. Very solid!
As for Xhaka I'll probably be the only one to defend him. It's maybe not the best thing to do, to come flying in like he did but he's fighting for every ball. He's been great for us. People branding him as, the worst player ever is ridiculous. True he's needs to be upgraded,
but for now he's our best midfielder who we are going to miss Sunday. Lay off Xhaka people.
The thing what Xhaka is that he knows what reputation he has and how the refs look at him. Had some player, with no such reputation, done that like Saka it would be close to a red so if your Xhaka why even try such a wild contest
I don't think he's our worst player ever but I haven't rated him for multiple reasons, but with the stupid challenges he does its too much trouble for an alright player as you could easily improve the position
But I try to be as open minded to most things as I can be (something arsenal fans need to do much more) and I can see why Arteta plays Xhaka over the alternatives, personally I think we need at least 1 of Partey/Xhaka to be playing for our current midfield to work

Great performance. Also context is important while criticizing Xhaka. Gabriel is out of position and if Xhaka doesn't make that tackle, we are a goal down surely, and once you concede early at Anfield, chances are you'll concede 4-5 easily.
Also the red was soft and more based on his reputation than actual severity of challenge.
What context??? Basically You're saying it's better to be a man down than a goal down. He is pure liability. How many times we are going to allow this man to let the club down. Arsenal need to get rid of him ASAP.

At first I was like 'not again' but really that was not a clumsy tackle from him. We still need though another midfielder (committed and hardworking and a good passer), an upgrade to xhaka
your way of thinking is purely short term, losing xhaka immediately lost us the midfield, being a man down also gives more space for liverpool's attack. i understand your thought process but going a goal down is not equivalent to losing a player on the pitch. you can only say this because we didn't end up conceding because Liverpool were wasteful, but if you saw the end of the match we literally could not leave our own box. its basic mathematics man

I could see it given as a yellow for some players but Xhaka does this all the time and I guarantee the refs know that
Not really I could see what he meant, If a player like Saka would've done it i think there would’ve been some leniency, he didn't fully connect the kick, in fact if you watch it you see his foot goes under Jota's arm and he holds on to the foot by pressing against his chest
How he was ever our captain is beyond me.. he’s a well capped international player as well but honestly the guy plays with zero football IQ and we’re suffering because of it.

Whatever Arteta said to them in the dressing room after Nottingham has worked wonders. Amazing game to watch, we haven't seen such a rigid defense against an unending barrage of quality attacks from Arsenal for a long time. Spurs next though and with less than 15 players fit and at Spurs Stadium its gonna be tough. Lets hope the boys pull off another defending masterclass.

That was his worst performance in the shirt- his hesitancy contributed massively towards Xhaka’s sending off.
Xhaka slows down because he thinks Aaron is coming out then has to speed up again once he realises the keeper is out of position.

Sometimes i feel bad for xhaka, great player but often unlucky...i stopped hating him when i noted the balance, stability and dedication he adds to the team...only plastic fans undervalue xhaka

People are blaming Xhaka for getting the Red Card but I will praise Xhaka for commiting that foul, Jota have a clear chance on goal if Xhaka did not stop him.
Its the Mickey Mouse cup. Now he is suspended and its Spuds in Sunday. I think he totally misjudged where Jota was and only had eyes for ball? If so I think a yellow can suffice but Xhaka really doesn't get the benefit of the doubt.
It undeniable that Arteta changed the mentality and the defensive style of the team. We used to be conceded a lot in such games, but wa can see that we are defensively stronger now. It was Manchester City the other day and now Liverpool and the lads defended very ver very well.

Great efforts. COYG!!! After the red card, the throng central midfield of Saka Lokonga Martinelli in that 531 formation is the best we've ever played since the days of the invincibles. No way back for Xhaka in that midfield, we all know he lacks the urgency, he'd always be caught out against speedy pressers or runners. Let's hope Arteta can see and learn from this game that our central midfielders must be athletic in addition to their Arteta's overemphasized passing and defensive abilities. Rob Holding did upped his intensity to remain in the squad, if Xhaka won't up his intensity, he should be out pls!
Don't decieve yourself, xhaka is still our best, first choice and first team midfielder (maybe 🤔 Partey is a little better than him). And if we get to the final, he will surely play.
Arteta and Arsenal board needs to bring in another midfielder (committed and hardworking and calm midfielder). And that will create a good competition in the midfield and surely reduce the tension on xhaka. But they should not bring another learner like lokonga to the team.
But Lokonga is not a learner o.... He's the closest to Partey abilities wise, he's much more rounded than Xhaka who struggles in big games and against pacing opponents.
