Remember if 1 EMP goes off odds are a second one will go off. To make sure they got all the backup devices that people will take out and use. so if you're not using it, always put it back in its storage containers.
Question: Can we encase a boxed 2 burner Coleman stove in large EMP bags? Will it be protected against EMP. Got multiple faraday cages done a year ago. Tks.
Hey, JR! I'm a 54yo woman, trying to prepare to take care of my elderly mother and myself when SHTF. I followed your instructions for the metal can faraday cage. It works perfectly!!! I put my phone in it & closed it up. It went straight to vm when a friend tried to call me. My solar generator fits great in it, along with many other things. I've made up a smaller can for quick access to LED flashlights and lanterns in the event of a power outage. Thank you so much!!!! If I can do this, ANYONE can!
If ya gotta go big, then get one of those Conex containers, They are pretty Cheap Nowadays, and they can be cut down and welded together in all kinds of configurations. And they have a heavy Duty Door. Carry on.
Built my first metal trashcan Faraday cage and wrapped my solar panel boxes in 4 layers of heavy duty aluminum foil, was a good day. Going for some ammo boxes tomorrow and maybe one more trashcan and get all my solar battery stuff, cell phones, I even have an Android tablet and old phone loaded up with Survival PDFs/Books, gotta keep all that from frying! THANKS for this Video, exactly what I and I suspect the country needs, with some much crazy ramping up these days, just hope our luck holds, not sure I'm ready for what comes next!
my family already thinks im bonkers for prepping. now having trashcan emp's full of equipment makes them think ive completely lost my mind. it aint easy living in a higher level of comprehension.
I just did the metal garbage can cage! It bloody works!!! I sat next to it with my cell phone inside and called it with my landline. Nothing! And went straight to vx mail!! Thank you very much for your ingenuity!!!
Thanks for showing us how to easily make a faraday cage. My phone still rang inside the cage until I added the heavy duty foil around the top edge. Now it works perfect!
NOTE. Power tool batteries have circuit boards in them. If the board gets damaged the battery is trashed. So you may want to put several tool batteries in there.
I made the trash can farday cage a couple of years ago. However, since then I got the Delta Pro & Panels, and what a great idea you presented here! Turning their boxes into faraday Cages, WOW! Excellent & way more affordable than what's on the market for larger equipment. Thank you so much!!!❤
I have watched a lot of videos regarding this subject. I feel your video was very well done, and the information excellent! You have never heard anyone say "I wish I wasn't that safe!" Well done.
WE DID IT AND IT WORKED! Thank you so much for the great instruction. We did the trash can method and made room for our cell phones, lap tops, solar generator and even more. I just did the tin foil gasket. We tried calling my cell several times and it actually blocked the signal. Happy October 4th everyone. I for one am not trusting what is really happening.
You might be surprised to know a faraday cage doesn't necessarily require a complete metal enclosure with metal seals as long as there is a conductive metal skeleton completely surrounding the object(s) you're trying to protect. Electricity is magnetically attracted to any conductive metal with silver being at the top of the list. Aluminum is your best bet as well cheapest. What you have demonstrated here is excellent. I've seen it tested-- plus I built one very similar to yours by isolating the items in a non-conductive container, tape it up with aluminum tape and it's good to go.
JR... Excellent video. Ordered the Aluminum Foil Tape. Appreciate the way you articulate the instructions and make easy to follow and understand. Keep up the good work!
Thank you for presenting the information in a simple yet practical way: the idea of popping a light inside the container to check for holes was inspired! I'd been thinking of using an old metal filing cabinet as my faraday cage - boxing up everything I want to save in their own cardboard boxes, then sealing all the gaps with aluminium tape, and finally wrapping the whole lot in aluminium foil - but I think I'm going splash out on a few metal bins instead (ammo cases are surprisingly hard to find here in Blighty). Thank you again.
Thankyou. This all sounds very useful and if nothing else I believe that you have helped others have some peace of mind about such an eventuality. My Regards Mr. Dominic James Austin. P.S. I am one whom thinks that there is more good about the internet than bad.
For my metal trash cans, I first just put everything in a heavy duty yard bag and then just lower it into the can. I can put another one on top of it. Easy to pull everything out and reload items this way.
He ensured steady unbroken conductivity to prevent holes in the protective forcefield!! Thanks for sharing something effective that anyone can manage to keep our fam safe!
Big Fan of your channel for a wbile now. So have been working on a 40’ shipping container Almost done. Pretty simple just BIG. Looks like all is good at this point. YES YES YES, this is awesome, thanks! I was trying to cram stuff in some small faraday bags and I have a large 4Patriots battery backup, a ton of panels, hand crank radio's, some Ham and CB radio's and the bags just were NOT cutting it, thanks for the video, very help!
Another alternative is the emf fabric. More expensive but I’m sewing up different sized packs from one roll of several yards. Just a thought for larger items
Me too! Invested in 2 Patriot 4 units & a smaller solar gen. In Addition to 3 Behring locking cans. Decided to go big with a 2 shelf steel storage cabinet. Big fun family project. Followed all instructions X 2. Tested & it seems to work. All solar gens, small electronics, appliances, cables, back up gadgets fit nicely. Hope it works as purposed. Fingers crossed. That’s all we can do.
Higher frequency signals can get through smaller openings, that's why the NOAA weather radio failed with the lid on, but the Cellphone was still in communication until you sealed those openings with foils layers. I'd think to connect your can to an earth ground would improve the function more.

Jr great video throwing in my two cents on the last cage for the solar panels but some kind of shoe or a runner on the bottom so the foil does not rip or tear if you move it. Now I have a project for this weekend I will do a metal can like you did yours. Thanks for the idea.
Diary entry #1 EMP hit. Checked contents of cans/boxes. All good. Setting up temp lightsource for tonight. Getting panel arrays charging n batts topped. Diary entry #2 I never accounted for a second EMP. All is lost.
I've just got a diver garbage bin for my small wattage solar generator I never thought to do that put a light inside to see if any light showing through thank you 👍🤗🙏💖🇬🇧
I have the metal trash can Faraday cage already but didnt add foil around the inside lid yet because I want access but I will add foil and test with a light inside too. Awsome advices in this video. I bought 2 Faraday bags GoDark for my Nintendo Switch and my phone when I'm not home
My solar generator is too big to fit in the can. I put the can upside down onto the genny. It's in my basement the rim sitting on concrete. It was the only way to cover the genny.
You can buy galvanized roofing valley tin in many widths and roll lengths might be something to think about. Say for panels, pop rivet , seal then metal tape. Just a thought.
May 2024, and your video has not lost its relevance. Quite the contrary, I would say. Thanks for your advice. My trash and everything else is ordered. Afterwards, a little tinkering and it will be ok. But... it's fascinating to see all these RUclipsrs telling us what to do with full shelves of objects behind them that will be unusable during the coming crisis.
Excellent. And cheaper than buying all this stuff pre-made online. I like the ammo can method, but am opting for the galvanized trash cans. I very much appreciate the advice. New subscriber.
Just don't forget to put things back into an EMP safe spot after using. The likelihood of more EMP's even weeks, months or years later is very high. Better always have 2 of each item you protect.
Be sure to add in a ground wire. If one of your cages eat an emp and you don't have it grounded, death or serious injury could occur to the next one who touches it when all that caught energy is expelled.
About the top gasket for the ammo can, you can use a length of stainless wrapped toilet feed line as your gasket, it just needs to be long enough to go all the way around the inside continuously and be stitched together with some fine copper wire to keep the metal Continuous. on the trashcan, you can sandblast the top inside of the lid and the top edge of the can to remove any residue of oil that is used in the manufacturing. Good Tips! carry on.
You can sand down a few spots and solider a piece of mesh (even folded piece of metal screeen) you the screen to bridge ther gap as a gasket. Like a folded fridge gasket.
THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO. I HAVE WORRIED ABOUT THE SOLAR EVENT AND HAD NO IDEA HOW TO MAKE A FARIDA CAGE FOR MY SOLAR GENERATORS AND SOLAR PANELS. PLUS SMALL ITEMS THAT NEED PROTECTION. GOD BLESS YOU
One thing about using metal repair tape is the glue on the back side , the sticky side will sometimes prevent a good seal . I use alcohol to remove the glue from the center of the tape to ensure metal to metal contact .
Thank you for your inspirational ideas. They definitely come into great use in this day & age. I think alot of people will be caught off guard if the inevitable happens. They'll be lost, confused and extremely upset relying on our govt. at that moment, but they forget about the important things that need to be done now, to be prepaired right now before an EMP happens. We all need to keep ourselves self-sufficient & operational, its all going to be more valuable after an EMP. Most will be cought up in their day to day living right now while the rest of us will do the small important things one at a time in order to maintain some sort of normalcy in living through desperate times. Scary, but true I think. As of doing this, we must keep ourselves protected in more ways than one, including self protection (self preservation). The way this world is headed its causing alot of anxiety in every govt around the world including most of its citizens. I hope we dont witness it in our lifetime including my children or grand-children. My mother taught us to be survivalists when we were young and she told me before she past away last month that she knew we were all capable of living in the backwoods taking care of ourselves and our family. Peace everyone! Good planning and looking out for yourselves if your interest are about survivablity in apocalyptic times.... Good luck! Jim~Massachusetts, USA 🇺🇸
whats more important is to store hardware reelated to survie during the blackouts . most of these electronics are going to be useless any ways as the cellular towers and transmitters will more than likely be knocked out during the Emp... hand tools of every type you can get . tools made from good quality steel and wood built to endure.. commodities that will have a good long storage life span along with supplies to endure the weather , ect. yes surval will be the key and having the tools to do it will be a neccessary thing to make it during the hard time ...and last of all get material written in books for info..on everything you think is important to teaching and learning.. i wouldnt count on the internet being a viable source of information during these EMP storms ..
An EMP is pretty much a split second event. Occurs at the instant a nuclear explosion occurs....or the leading edge of a coronal mass ejection (CME) of sufficient intensity arrives from the sun. CMEs occur many times in a year. Only once in a great while does one occur that is strong enough to harm electronics. Research the "Carrington event" of 1859 for more info on that.
What are you asking? An EMP is a pulse of radio waves that rolls though hitting anything with conductive material with an ungodly amount of energy. The aftermath however is likely 2-3 weeks for a major city infrastructure, months for small towns and years for most everything else.
Original metal Faraday cages were lined with rubber. The reason is rubber is an insulator against any type of electrical current from EMF to EMP. Ensure all sides are rubber lined including the lid.
I've got a large metal container should the SHTF. I also have a small short wave radio receiver because if things really do go bad the internet will go down and my short wave set can pick up radio stations from all round the world, including amateur transmissions. I've also got some aluminum and copper strips so I can make my own batteries to power my radio.
Ive been using 45 gallon drums with a leaver lock lid. Cardboard lined, change gasket to EMP type. Making another one this week. Easy to come and go from these drums. I have two gas generators in one, A complete solar system in an other, I store any thing that could be damaged in these. I have EMP pouches for communication radios when not in use.
I would find it next to impossible to EMP any garage I have ever been in. It would be easier to purchase a pre 1980 vehicle. they do not have microelectronics and therefore do not require EMP protection.
I thought about a Faraday cage but then again if we have an EMP blast it will take out all systems leaving a computer and cell phone worthless. I think a CB radio might be a better option. However I think building one for the items he stored in there is brilliant and I never even thought about those items needing protection. Thanks, great video.
Wow! I just bought an ambulance and there are cabinets in the outside storage that are all metal. I can put some amazing things in there to just metal tape the edges and corners and dropping some cardboard inside.
Could you wrap the original gasket on the ammo box in the foil for a seal/connection? And I might have missed it but do you add desiccant to prevent internal corrosion? Even a sock with oatmeal will keep it dry inside but store-bought is better.
I think an EMP is unlikely to affect the solar panels, themselves, unless it's part of a pre-made integrated system. However, your inverter and charge controller do need to be in Faraday cages.

Would cellular phone signals be blocked by an effective faraday cage?
FC won't work.. It might even amplify the EMP. Only Lead works and that's the real reason they are trying to restrict our access to it.

Diary entry #1 EMP hit. Checked contents of cans/boxes. All good. Setting up temp lightsource for tonight. Getting panel arrays charging n batts topped.
Diary entry #2 I never accounted for a second EMP. All is lost.
If you need large metal boxes, larger ammo cans and surplus military metal cases work great too!
I was just eyeing xxl faraday bags for the ecoflow 160w solar panels
Thank you I have an Eco Flow Delta. This video is perfect for me.
I have been looking for a video this clear!!! Thank you! Best on the net😊😊
I bought a 12x28 shed and heavily insulated it and it’s completely emp proof and now I have no worries
I just covered a whole small bedroom, floor to ceiling, with aluminum foil. Many layers. Alot of foil but it is done. Phone doesn’t ring in there.
😳
Just asking. Would this make you consume a lot of heavy metal toxins if you stay in the room?
Why?
2 is 1 and 1 is none. Truth!!
I would bet even hours or days later.
Pulse duration is on hours, not weeks, months.
@@markwest7258 doubtfull...
Do EMP’s fry stuff even if it’s off?
WOW, that was mind blowing information and practical use
Be sure to add in a ground wire. If one of your cages eat an emp and you don't have it grounded, death or serious injury could occur to the next one who touches it when all that caught energy is expelled.
‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️
How?
COULD ACT AS A CAPACITOR?
HMMM
No.
How do I do that if I live in a third story apt.?
Ammo can faraday box is perfect for my mid 80's pre chip vehicle. Distributor cap, coil, fuses, cable harness, spark plugs all fit with room to spare.
None of the items mentioned above have micro electronics. They a safe from an EMP with no protection.
Good stuff, thanks!
You’re welcome! Thanks for watching!
THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO. I HAVE WORRIED ABOUT THE SOLAR EVENT AND HAD NO IDEA HOW TO MAKE A FARIDA CAGE FOR MY SOLAR GENERATORS AND SOLAR PANELS. PLUS SMALL ITEMS THAT NEED PROTECTION.
GOD BLESS YOU
This is so clever and very helpful! Thank you!
You're welcome! Thanks for watching and commenting!
It's only a matter of time before we need all this. Thank you for the information.
One thing about using metal repair tape is the glue on the back side , the sticky side will sometimes prevent a good seal . I use alcohol to remove the glue from the center of the tape to ensure metal to metal contact .
If you are wrapping a box with foil I think a easy way is to use some spray adhesive to lay the foil directly 😉
Super 77 spay adhesive is great
It has to be conductive to work
@clbooth3 I don't know what you talking about. Te conductor is the foil not the glue.
@@joeyanglada1275 the glue is under the foil correct?!?
Tell me you have conductive glue.
Without it the glue becomes an insulator.
Very well presented video, thank you!
I used an ammo can, and to save room on the inside I sprayed about 8 or 9 coats of Flex Seal. It looks pretty darn cool.
I wonder how long will an EMP will last? 1 day, a week, a month, or a year? Just asking and wondering. Thank you. Great video.
@@dramspringfeald Thank you. I didn't know about EMP.
I ask and learn.
@@henryskinner1092
It will last for a few seconds. Solar flares could last for hours and days, maybe weeks.
Depends on how it's created...
Wow!
TY, for GREAT IDEAS!
Thanks Guys for info In the comments section too!
Thanks for watching!
Original metal Faraday cages were lined with rubber. The reason is rubber is an insulator against any type of electrical current from EMF to EMP. Ensure all sides are rubber lined including the lid.
Would trash bags work?
Thank you never thought about foil gasket 👍🤗🇬🇧
Would it be feasible to install wire mesh of some kind around the inside of your garage to protect everything in it? Cars have circuit boards too.....
I would find it next to impossible to EMP any garage I have ever been in. It would be easier to purchase a pre 1980 vehicle. they do not have microelectronics and therefore do not require EMP protection.
Thanks also for idea with the plywood so I can do a extra later brilliant clever lad you are thank you 👍🤗🇬🇧
Would an old filing cabinet work?
Lead lined box would work apparently. You can buy lead flashing in UK.. Make sure it's full Lead though
Would it be feasible to make a small metal shed completely sealed by metal and ,multiple grounds?
I thought about a Faraday cage but then again if we have an EMP blast it will take out all systems leaving a computer and cell phone worthless. I think a CB radio might be a better option. However I think building one for the items he stored in there is brilliant and I never even thought about those items needing protection. Thanks, great video.
I was wondering about the cell phones as well. If the towers are toast. Maybe they will work in unaffected areas?
You'll possibly have lots of important info on the phone-- downloaded docs and such. @@Luckyspetlimo
I have built several Faraday cages and put them in numerous locations. However I have not yet managed to catch a Faraday...
I have 2 Delta 2’s and an extra battery to protect. I still have the original panel box.
Thanks good video 👍
Thanks for watching!
Wow! I just bought an ambulance and there are cabinets in the outside storage that are all metal. I can put some amazing things in there to just metal tape the edges and corners and dropping some cardboard inside.
Around the edges of your Faraday cages, you can use Steelwool with the metal tape to hold It , works well.
Is the strength of the EMP a factor?
for heavy items, roll onto lid, put box over top, instead of lifting into box, good video my friend, thx
Could you wrap the original gasket on the ammo box in the foil for a seal/connection? And I might have missed it but do you add desiccant to prevent internal corrosion? Even a sock with oatmeal will keep it dry inside but store-bought is better.
Thank you for the demonstration 👍
Can an oven, washing machine and dryer tumblers, an old fridge work as well?
I have a product that I use for electronics. It’s Titan RF faraday tape . It is actually available in different widths and lengths.
You can buy faraday fabric that is not that pricey. It would probably be much easier for wrapping the solar panels.
Metal stock tanks make excellent bases for Faraday cages if you are handy enough to fashion a lid.
I think an EMP is unlikely to affect the solar panels, themselves, unless it's part of a pre-made integrated system. However, your inverter and charge controller do need to be in Faraday cages.
Yep….unplugged they won’t be affected….
Unplugged doesn't matter if there's any kind of coil in them. An EMP doesn't only travel over the grid but through the air
@davidbrannan987 EMP's travel through the atmosphere. That's kind of what cellphone signals are, on a very small scale.
for charge controller I can see the foil, the panels themselves, I think storing with - and + of the panels as direct short would be enough protection
