      Very fun puzzle with fascinating geometry. 👏👏👏 My favourite type.
      By the way, it allows for a pretty effective application of the *placeholder-digit* technique. You just need to ignore the *black dot* (which is the only disambiguator) until you fill in the whole grid with large-font *placeholders.* Eventually, you will obtain either
      *r3c8 = 3* (if you started with yellow=4)
      or
      *r3c8 = 7* (if you started with yellow=6)
      The latter is incompatible with the *black dot* and will require you to switch to the alternative configuration by using _y_ = 10 - _x._ You can do that in a blink of an eye, if you know how.
      See my separate comment for details.

    The name of the puzzle is likely a reference to the pigeonhole principle in maths, which states that if m pigeons are put into n holes, with m > n, there must be a hole with multiple pigeons in it. It's quite simple but something that can be used to great effect.
    In this puzzle this is applicable to the 5s, if a 5 was not on a line, there would be a row/column/box with more than one 5 in it.

      It's a testament to how calming and enjoyable these are to watch. I'm also a member of the CTC insomnia cure crew (the CTCICC, if you will) and Simon's videos are huge for me being able to drift off if I'm having a bout of insomnia. I can't do it with any other show, music, or whatnot - just these puzzles.
      Simon, you're an incredible presenter, and the fact that you have such a calming (some might say soothing) presentation style is incredible. Don't take these comments about insomnia as meaning you're not interesting. On the contrary! You create such a pleasantly engaging video it helps allow an anxious mind to settle.
      As someone else commented, if I drift off, I simply rewind a few minutes and pick it up in the morning!

    As someone who also sometimes falls asleep to these (and other videos), let me say it is not about being boring, quite the opposite. If it's boring I get irritated and less sleepy. To be a good candidate to fall asleep to, a presenter must be interesting enough to hold the attention. Personally, I also find videos where only one person is talking very helpful, and usually in a calm, pleasant way - no surprises just as I'm drifting off. I love your videos, and just go back and watch whatever I missed with my morning coffee.

      @@Coldheart322 Recently (last 2 months or so) I've been giving all of the sudoku's that appear on the channel an honest try, in an effort to see if I could crack the more difficult puzzles as well, instead of just watching Simon do it.
      What I've discovered is that I can usually find the solve path as quickly as Simon does... until I get stuck in a spot for a massive amount of time (usually 30-50 minutes) where I can't find how to continue and just keep looping over all the stuff I've already checked, re-checking and finding all the simpler logic, while the real key is some difficult deduction that I just fail to spot.
      Simon continually trying to barge forward and find those hard deductions is actually something I imagine is born from all the experience he has had, and it's usually the best attitude to have.
      In conclusion, I think he fails to check for simpler logic (naked singles/pairs) because that's often not the way forward, while most of the viewers spot them, because your instinct for where to find the hard deductions is less honed as a beginner.
      Just a little thought of why Simon often seems to miss the simple paths from own experience
      (or when he says "you're making me do sudoku so early in the puzzle?" haha)

    Only the black dot disambiguates between high and low. I'm using D for green and F for yellow, and in general the letters for their rank or ten minus their rank. (I'm thinking of the letters as their rank, just because it's easier.)
    17:50 The line under discussion, I penciled as 5FGHI because the green is my D.
    32:00 Thanks, I followed that tactic. Your grey was my GHI, so I let X, Y, and Z be one each of G, H, and I. That allowed me to place C (37, blue) in R2C9 in block 3's line, because it saw all three of X, Y, and Z. I don't think I need X, Y, and Z further.
    Later: I finally finished the puzzle. At one point, I had to color AB pairs to fix an I. Thanks to the black dot, the letters turned out reversed.

      The blue cell could have been either a blue 37 or a blue 28 - but only a blue 28 if the other uncolored cell could be the digit on the blue side of 5 that was between 28 and 46 or you would have a gap in the consecutive digits. i.e., the known blue cell could only be 28 if the other cell was also blue and was 37 but it sees a blue 37 in its column so it could not be blue 37. It could only be grey 37 or blue 28. Therefore the known blue could only be blue 37.

Also, for some reason, I was thinking that if there was a 4 on a line, that line had to have a 3 and vice versa with 6 and 7. No idea where I got that idea from.
    I really loved the break in using the 5s, then the white dots giving 4,6's. Just did a ton of coloring from there.

However, there were 2 places where I decided to brute force a 50/50 on top of a spot of faulty logic (failed to consider some numbers in square 3) though I managed to logic out where all the 4/6 spots figured out some extreme renbans and began coloring in high/low squares were before resorting to the brute force methods. The first one was figuring out which 4/6 was which. It led me into faulty logic, backed up tried again and found myself in another 50/50 (but so close to completion) where i brute forced again, with no more faulty logic. So I'm proud of myself. I want to see how Simon did it and what logic I should have used in the spots I brute forced. My time was 327:55 minutes

    • @MissKapanadze
      @MissKapanadze Год назад +2

      Because it had to be a gray digit (since the box already got all 3 blue digits elsewhere). Then since the line had blue 37 on it, it couldn’t have a gray 28 on it or it wouldn’t have been consecutive.
      For example, if you made it a 2, then blue 37 would become a 7 (since blue and gray are opposite polarity) and then you’d have 24567 on the renban, which isn’t consecutive. If you made it an 8, you would get 34568 on the line, which again isn’t consecutive. That cell had to be a gray 37 by sudoku and renban logic, but couldn’t be a 7 because of the black dot, therefore it was a 3.
      Another way to think about it is if there is a gray 28 on the line, then there also has to be a gray 37 on the line to stay consecutive with 456, but there was no space for another gray digit to be added to the line.

    I'm failing to understand here (@33:33).
    [That line has both a yellow and a green 46]
    So, I'm thinking it was the same principle as that blue cell that happened on that other line that had "both yellow and green 46."
    The blue was found to be on that line in r3c6 , and he made that a 37 .
    [The blue 37 was looking at that other end -- just like in this case]
    So, why can't you conclude it's "37" like in that other case ealier?
    [For all intents and purposes blue and grey are interchangeable at this point]
    So, why not conclude that grey cell (with both 46s on it) isn't 37 like before??

    • @MissKapanadze
      @MissKapanadze Год назад +1

      Because row 8 column 3 cell is still unknown color at that point. If r8c3 is gray, then either of the gray cells could be 28 or 37, and since neither sees a gray 37, we can’t conclude which one is a gray 37.
      If r8c3 is blue, then it must be a blue 37 and the other cell would be a gray 37. But since that cell sees a blue 37, it can be concluded that it’s gray, but not which one is 28 and which one is 37.

    • @afanofosc
      @afanofosc Год назад +1

      For lines that contain 5 and a 46 pair if there is known to be only one of blue and grey then they both have to be 37 to keep the line consecutive. If you have 2 blue or 2 grey on the line you can't tell which one is 28 and which is 37 in that color. At this point in the video there was only one cell left of unknown color. If it was blue it had to be 37 and it saw a blue 37 so it had to be grey but its value was ambiguous due to there being 2 grey cells on the line - neither of which saw a grey 28 or grey 37 to disambiguate their nature.

    This puzzle can be solved a little bit more easily and more quickly by using *placeholder digits* to simplify your notation.
    *Placeholder digits* are symbols, like *colours* or *letters.* In this case, they stand for either themselves or 10 minus themselves.
    Notice that in this case *placeholders* are 👉not👈 as powerful as usual, but they do help significantly and they are fun to use. Just try.
    After placing all fives, use (for instance):
    *4* instead of yellow *46*
    *6* instead of green *46*
    *3* instead of grey *37*
    *7* instead of blue *37*
    ...
    Go on as long as possible ignoring the *black dot,* which is the only disambiguator available in the grid (white dots do not differentiate between N and 10 - N). You will be able to fill in the whole grid with *large-font placeholders.* Eventually, the *black dot* will allow you to switch to real digits. You will obtain either:
    *r3c8 = 3* (if you started with yellow=4)
    or
    *r3c8 = 7* (if you started with yellow=6)
    If you obtain *r3c8 = 7,* which is incompatible with the *black dot,* just use _y_ = 10 - _x_ to switch to the alternative configuration in a blink of an eye.
    You might still need *blue* and *grey* (I did) to differentiate more easily between *1-2-3* and *7-8-9,* and you might still need to use *letters* (I did not) to differentiate between flavours of *blue* and *grey,* but you will have fun with *simplified pencilmarking.*

      👉In this case,👈 Simon's solve was undoubtedly brilliant, so I believe he was not significantly slowed down by his slightly more intricate pencilmarking.
      However, in *dozens* of previous CTC videos both Simon and Mark were *hugely* slowed down by *cumbersome* notation that could have been markedly simplified by using *placeholders.*

      @@Paolo_De_Leva I appreciate the calmness of this explanation, and I agree with how you would propose to use it, and also with your observation that Simon's method was good in this puzzle. I have been thinking about why I and others don't like this method; as I have commented a few times on other CtC videos about it, I find it to be a bit of a risk that I will become confused about what switches to 10-n I have made and which I have not yet made, so that is one reason I have not tried it. Another concern that I have (and is probably one that other viewers would pick up on) is the similarity of this method to bifurcating. Simon and Mark do not favor bifurcation as a way to solve a puzzle into which beautiful logic has been placed by the creator, and even this method might obscure an aha moment that could possibly come sooner than the black dot (or whatever disambiguating method might be present) is finally able to shed its light. All that aside, I appreciate this video's explanations - thank you.

    • @Paolo_De_Leva
      @Paolo_De_Leva Год назад +1

      @@emilywilliams3237 It is not at all bi-fork-ation. It is *by definition* mono-fork-ation‼️
      You only walk through one *prong* of the fork, while if you don't use *placeholders* you walk through *both* at the same time, which is not a smart call since the two prongs (i.e. logic pahts) are totally symmetric.
      You will never need to restart from scratch, not even if you initially choose the "wrong" logic prong.
      You will not lose any *aha moment.* You will just see it more clearly‼
      No risk to be confused by the conversion to 10 - N. It is needed only *once,* and only if you are not lucky with your initial choice. In this case, at the very end of your solve, as already explained above.

    I really don't understand your compulsion to over-complicate your colouring. Every time you do it, you struggle to spot what would be really obvious with simple colouring. Why distinguish between yellow and grey? The only difference is that yellow is a 46, but you've pencil-marked 46 into the cell anyway. Just put "46" in the yellow squares, and make all greys yellow. That leaves you with just two colours to worry about, representing highs and lows, and lets you more easily spot when you've got all of a colour in a row/column/box.
    Very nice colouring puzzle, requiring most of the grid to be coloured before revealing which was which.
