It always great to hear an oustanding artist cover another outstanding artist. The Verlains were one of those NZ bands that made me consider moving there once. Mr. Malkmus your taste is impeccable.
iknow it's not a "singer's voice", as the NY Times recently wrote, but i love that voice, it is very re-assuring and comforting to me
What a way to put it. I couldnt agree more.
IT IS Graeme Downes on bass. I know several people that were in the studio and saw it happening in real life. He's also playing Jane Dodd's bass guitar, no less.
The song was part of the "Under The Influence" comp in which FN bands covered other FN bands.
Geez, hard to take on such a iconic song and band, but Malkmus and crew make it a beauty unto itself. Really fun listen.
I hope this video stays on RUclips forever.
i was skeptical how his cover of this song would sound but now i'm pretty sure this is one of the best covers ever
yeah awesome perfromance of awesome song
Who would have thought Hugh Grant was a fan of The Verlaines? He rocks!!
😂😅🤣
This is ridiculously good. I've had the song for quite some time, but I had no idea that there was a video. Fantastic.
The waltz part is delightfully unhinged in this version.
excellent! I love this
can't wait to see Pavement in a few months. i'm going to lose it
i love the 'post-classic nasal drip'. thanks for introducing me to the Verlaines. i know, the order is backwards.
so great
This is an amazing song. I can't believe I've never heard it. Will be checking out the Verlaines' catalog shorlty.
Amazing cover....kudos Mr Malkmus!!!
Go Stephen! This is terrific...
this is awesome! not seen this before!x
this is great; thanks
@intergalacticwolf22 The Verlaines are a very famous New Zealand indie band; Flying Nun is a famous NZ record label that Malkmus/Pavement idolised.
Wow...that's a classic video...2 of the best bands of the 80's and 90's, the Verlaines and Pavement in one song!!!!
awesome!
Definitive version! 😍
@TheHumannBee Chap, the bassist is the original writer of this song and creator of The Verlaines, the one and only Dr Graeme Downes
how great
That's great!
I found this CD on Amazon. Awesome collection of bands/songs/covers. If the bass player looks like Graham Downes, it probably is. The premise was to invite the great Flying Nun acts to cover a Flying Nun song and record a new one. Everyone seems to have jammed together to get it done in a few days. Malkmus was flown in just to cover this song. Great compilation.
Great Version 👍
this is heaven!
Malkmus is genius, just so much talent; I think he could have been very big if he did not recoil from the prospect; he found the perfect medium of success without fame
trés bien
@warmwarmerdisco just saw them in toronto a while ago. Soooo good.

box elder m.o.w.o.w.
look up "flying nun" to get a copy.
Excellent Verlaines cover! And is that footage of the Robert Burns statue in the Octagon?
The guy on the Bass is from The band who wrote this song originally (and if my info is correct Stephen Malkmus is from the States)
"we'll look like... Death and the Maiden vuh-lane vuh-lane vuh-lane vuh-lane..."
Allez, allez, allez, allez....
i find this version better :O
Than what? Certainly not The Verlaines' I hope!
Hey thanks! Do you know of a way I can download this song and/or the album? I can't find it on iTunes.
Hey paulmalkmus, is there anyway you could upload a higher quality version of this?
i would like to download this amazing song.
how can i do that?
sorry to bother, i also would desperately love to have this song!
you know where i could get a download link to this track?
Some of the above posters used the words "Flying Nun". Need any more clues ? ;)
would you mind to sent it to me?
@paulmalkmus may I have it too?
How can i get a copy of this song?
I don't mean to be 'that guy', but where can I get this song?
Would it have been too "on the nose" if he did a 3ds cover?
@revolutionaryspirit dude its stephen malkmus soooo......
?
bad manners-Lorraine Lorraine Lorraine ad nauseum
@TheHumannBee I don't think they're from New Zealand, nor does the bassist really look like Brett
Ovation Breadwinner
