I just happened to see a short clip of this on face book and was so blown away that I HAD to search for the entire video. I watched it and throughout the entire performance I experienced various emotions. Chills, thrills, goose bumps, hair raising on the back of neck, and lots of tears. When you hear a piece composed like this, you don't even need to know words to bring on the tears. It's just the beauty. Then I watched your reaction, and we shared all the same feels. I've lost count of how many times I have listened. I am sure there will be many more. There was one point where I think I went to heaven. Your facial expressions say it all. Thanks for your genuine reaction.

I love Jacob's music more than any other, it makes me laugh, it makes me cry and just blows me away, but I am not a musician so I don't know why, so it is wonderful to see people who know what is happening react to his music - thank you QoFy x

9:14, I'm glad you picked up on how "reserved" this is for Jacob. It's slightly fancier than most choral writing compositionally, but not that crazy.
It's simply done so masterfully. Although of course it still definitely takes an amazing talented choir to perform.
The Aeolians are amazing. I love their performace of "Precious Lord" and "Take it to the Lord in Prayer". Both performed around the same time as this.

And if you didn't see it, in the description for the video Jacob wrote, "I booked a recording session with Jason [conductor Jason Max Ferdinand] and the choir at Ocean Way Studios in Nashville, and composed ‘World O World’ the day before I flew from London to the studio to meet them."

I've watched all of your Collier reactions and this is the very best.
Three comments. The reason the microphone work is so good is seen briefly at the beginning and end of the video. Dr. Ben Bloomberg, who has been with Collier starting at MIT with the invention of the harmonizer and continuing with all of his tours.
Second, you've hit the nail on the head about this particular work. I think it is Collier's first "great" work. It is being performed all over the world by all sorts of musical groups. I watched a drum and bugle corps this morning-excellent.
Finally, I'm curious about the "written the day before" thing going around. Since this is the final song on Djessie Vol. 4, I'm just /guessing/ that what happened the day before was arranging the Pro Tools album version for live performance. There are a lot of Collier myths out there, like he is "self-taught."
Keep it up! I enjoy what you are doing.

Jacob himself directly said that he *wrote* (not arranged) the piece the day before he flew to Nashville. This also means that the Aeolians learned and recorded it all in the same day... which, given the professionalism of this choir, is plausible. Jacob has said it was a 12 hour recording session (at the end of which he also spontaneously had the Aeolians record vocal parts for "All Night Long").
This *is* the album version we are hearing in this recording. It was recorded in 2018, long before Djesse Volume 4 or even Volume 2. So there was no Protools version to adapt from for this recording. Jacob has said that he conceived of this piece as a "bookend" to the Djesse series, matching the opening of Djesse Vol 1's "Home Is."
As for Jacob being self-taught, that is largely true. He certainly had deep influence and learning from his mother and grandfather probably from the day he was born, but outside of a year or two of university, where he says he mostly studied jazz, I don't think he has had any other formal instruction. And keep in mind that much of his earliest arrangements were conceived and arranged just before or around the time he was stating university. So it is unlikely that much of his university training was deeply instrumental in development of his knowledge and skill.
If you want to hear some of his earliest work, search for "Kami's Journey", which I believe is still on RUclips. This is his first album, created when ie was 14 and 15. While very different from his newer music, the unmistakable influences of his understanding of theory and mastery is evident even in these very raw recordings.

Since Broomberg was at the board, I think it is more likely that he used the harmonizer. Isn't varrispeed a post recording tool?

I replied too quickly. I keep forgetting that any video posted under Collier's name has gone through a lot of post-recording audio as well as video work. Yes, likely varrispeed.

I'm not sure that's true. Listen to the very end of this version, recorded live with no sophisticated processing ruclips.net/video/qwxRyUnujvg/видео.html. Pretty sure that 6th octave is there. The Aeolians have some pretty beyond-human voices in their group. :)
