Most inexpensive diamond testers won't reliably differentiate between diamonds and moissanite because they have similar thermal/electrical properties, but moissanite is double-refractive (like calcite) and diamond is not, so with a 10x loupe, it is usually possible to detect moissanite if one knows what to look for. Moissanite actually has greater dispersion and a higher refractive index than diamond and so appears to have more fire and sparkle, which some people like and others don't. It is harder than sapphire, or anything other than diamond itself.

Diamonds are great for their industrial application.
As a hobby opal cutter, I love diamonds... on my cutting wheels!!
Big money mining usually means big impact on land.
Diamonds have value but they are tainted with control mechanisms and unethical practise and marketing.
Tanzanite is pretty great but sounds to be commoditized which to me takes away from the rarity and appeal.
If you believe in superstition around gems, look into the hope diamond or blue sapphires.
Phenomena stones are my favourite but are usually on the softer and more fragile side.
That said, fire agate seems a good option for effect and durability.
At the end of the day beauty is subjective so it's all a matter of opinion.
    Thanks for the great content!
    Looking forward to more

I would love to learn more about opals. Are opals in places other than Australia real opals? Sometimes they really don't look like opals. I'd like to know if they would be worth purchasing to use in jewelry making. Thank you, so much!!!

Maybe we can get a gemologist to join us for a discussion about opals sometime. In the meantime, there are lots of great videos on other channels about opals. : )

Yep. But, the good news is that things are changing. I predict that the price of diamonds is going to fall. Millennials aren't that interested in diamonds. 😀

First off, John, LOVE THAT SEXY BEARD! Had to be said. Next, I really only ever wanted a diamond because it is my birthstone, but I truly love a ruby.

I'd rather have colored gemstones frankly. Diamonds are overrated and over over proved thanks to DeBeers falsely inflating it to charge more.
More and more people are moving AWAY from diamonds for wedding rings. Mine is a custom made ring with a fancy cut Amethyst and I get loads of compliments. I even had him a ring made to match. Lol.
Our daughter recently became engaged. Her ring has sapphires. She flat told him she will not wear a diamond so, he found a gorgeous ring for her.

    • @OnlineJewelryAcademy

I prefer colored gemstones too. A few diamonds tossed in for good measure is fine. But, I'm glad that people are moving away from diamonds in favor of stones that are colorful. : )

@@OnlineJewelryAcademy Thanks for the reply! 😎
I agree. Diamond accents are nice. Just not the main attraction.
Both my husband and I had been married before. He had only matching bands in his first. My first was a huge diamond set I tried to talk him out of. I grew to love it and have it for my son one day.
We agreed we didn't want to go traditional. He had my ring custom made for me to fit the fancy amethyst he fell in love with. We are both purple freaks and Crystals are important to us too.

Randall Utendahl Yes. But they tend on the whole to be “cleaner” than natural diamonds. 💎
