Rabies in Vietnam

  • A fighter squadron was taken out of action when our pet puppy died of rabies. It was the largest rabies scare in US military history, and I was personally at risk. This could possibly have been a deliberate biological warfare attack - if so, it was effective in briefly taking a squadron out of the war!

      My most important historical video stories are SOMETHING BIG #1 and SOMETHING BIG #2. I got in the middle of a very tense situation between China and Russia and had no idea that I could have started a nuclear war -- or perhaps I prevented one. Viewers don't appreciate the seriousness of what happened. The first is what happened, and the second is my analysis of President Nixon's MADMAN NUCLEAR ALERT.

      I am playing your 'playlist' right now. I really enjoy your historical accounts, its good for civic pride and good for knowing the men who protected our freedoms. Something Big is really good! I liked the Madman too, shared your site with a lot of my friends, your fan base grows.

      I also am very interested in current fighters and technology. My discussions on that (and duplicates of my RUclips videos) are on Facebook / Spirit of Attack. BTW, I am going to an F-106 reunion in Nashville in September, and am preparing slide shows for that group, which may be about 80 pilots and maintenance men.

      80 National Treasures. I've played this video several times already. going through your entire playlist AND researching each incident.. brings history alive.. thank you so much. I checked out the Nihau incident further, that is golden!

    While this might be a stupid question: What does a typical infection on the skin look like (i.e. redness, swelling, crusting)?

    • @spiritofattack
      @spiritofattack  4 года назад

      I have never seen a rabies infection on the skin, but there were a lot more rabies cases in Vietnam than I knew at the time. I went to the USAF doctor, who told me it usually has an infection at the point entry. He didn't say how big, but I would assume it would vary with the break in skin. The usual break would be due to an animal bite, so would be an infected bite. I doubt if there is much data on small breaks, such as a scratch -- they might occur, but there would be little data.

      @@spiritofattack i was bitten on wellsite by a rabid bat about 12 yrs ago when i was closing the door to a mobil lab... called the geologist, told him why i hadda bail, & started the 2+ hour drive back to civilization...
      common sense told me it would take weeks to months for the rabies to kill me, but the fact i had been bitten REALLY screwed with my feeble mind to the extent that by the time i pulled up to the hospital where i'd get the shots, i was salivating so much i had to swallow frequently not to drool down my chin... & i remember worrying; what would i do if i had an urge to bite the 1st person i saw???
      now a days rabies antivenom or vaccine or whatever it is, is made by recombinant bacterial methods & is much less likely to cause problems then in your time. & they no longer stab you in the stomach with a knitting size needle, but for a needle-phobe like me it was still a highly unpleseant experience.

      @@geodeaholicm4889 Wow! Great story! My memory was of my mother. When she was a little girl, she was bitten by a dog. The doctors didn't have rabies serum, so they took a red-hot iron and "cauterized" or burned the bite to kill all germs! What a horrible experience! She often showed me the scar on her arm where they had burned her arm....

      @@spiritofattack if rabib fog attack me can i immediately cut of my hands or foot to stop the virus from its Track?

    • @spiritofattack
      @spiritofattack  3 года назад

      @@cuteredpanda00 No need to cut off your hands or foot. We have vaccines which stop rabies. However, it takes 14 shots, and you have to start taking the shots pretty soon, so you have to get to a doctor. There are a few cases of rabies in people every year in the USA. Only 3 people in the USA have survived rabies, so it is deadly and a horrible way to die. If in doubt, get to a doctor!

  • @petero.7487
    @petero.7487 6 лет назад +3

    That's horrifying! I didn't know it had to get through a hole in the skin, I just thought it had to be saliva to skin contact...

    • @spiritofattack
      @spiritofattack  6 лет назад +2

      Yes, rabies must get through a break in the skin. Rabies remains an endemic threat in the USA, with one to three cases reported annually. It is often carried by bats. Dog vaccination programs have been very effective in the USA. However, I was surprised to learn that rabies is quite common in Vietnam, where they import dogs for food and keep dogs penned together often, without vaccination, leading to more rabies infections. Vietnam averages about 91 HUMAN deaths PER YEAR.

    Hi Bruce, why did you reupload the same video

    • @spiritofattack
      @spiritofattack  7 лет назад +8

      Stormsquad - not quite the same video. Someone noted that in the first video I said it was 1972, but the rabies incident happened in 1971. I checked my records, and the first video was in error. I edited about 15 seconds of the opening scene to say "1971" instead of "1972". I made one other 5-second correction. I don't want my videos to have errors, but making corrections takes hours...
