    Hi, I know I am some weeks behind but just want to say - your work has feeling and character, and it interesting that you are embracing change. (Love your " Lochside" painting.) Please ignore the 'shoulds' and 'musts' in yourself conversations. Instead include the 'would like to' , 'will try that', 'that doesn't make me happy, I will look at it differently'. As i am sure everyone will say, Enjoy the moment, it is yours. Wishing you a happy week. I believe you are in America at this moment, ha ha.

    An awesome project idea! Take it slow, don't rush to make miles.
    Tips for fitness/endurance/well-being: (1) Walk with that full pack even on off days to help get used to carrying it quicker; (2) carry some electrolyte tabs or powder for a boost on warmer days; (3) carry an extra pair of socks to change into half way through a day - you would not believe what a luxury that is and also how nice your feet will feel if given some air while you sit and paint.
    If you still have that gym membership, try doing a lower body workout twice a week to strengthen your knees and quads.
    Happy trails!

Age and ill health has stopped me in the past but no more. I'll go from Glasgow to Fort William and the Jacobite train to Mallaig and then the ferry to Skye. The music 🎶 was beautiful too. Love, love, love, love this! What a feast for the senses! Scotland landscapes are amazing.I would've had a hard time not sketching around every single corner! I love the contrast of the grassy hills, jagged rocks, the tranquility of the ocean and sprinkles of wild flowers - all in one frame of view!. And those lovely quaint fishing villages are wonderful. I've always loved the historical old towns and architecture of Europe. That's something we really don't have here in the USA. What an amazing sketching adventure. I wonder how far you actually walked if you count how many times you went back to retrieve your camera lol. You captured your story so well so it was worth your efforts. Thank you for sharing Sarah! Can't wait to see more.

      That is honestly a huge challenge for me - not stopping every 100 feet to sketch. I want to, but I also want to keep going. So that is where the photos + studio time comes in. To paint lots of things I saw but didn’t stop to sketch.
      And yea it was probably a couple extra miles if you factor in the camera 😂

      Tip for long distance hiking- eat and hydrate on a schedule. Train yourself with a timer at first till your body just naturally adapts. A sip of water every 15mins a bite of food every 30-45, preferably a set amount of calories. For long distance, this is crucial to sustain constant and consistent energy throughout the long hours. Extra drinking when the sun is out. 👍✨

    So, so, HAPPY for you! A stunning view every direction you look! Feels like we are right there with you. Love the journal paintings and your postcard paintings. Curious what size of paper you do the grid on with the tape, and what size the postcards end up to be? You could have a postcard exhibit of all your paintings when you are done, and have your videos playing in tandem like they do in a lot of museums! I have seen exhibits where they have small works in order of creation, one by one, around a room or rooms, so it's like you are going on the journey, too. Add some maps and text and it would be an incredible exhibit! Couple more questions...what is sesame mochi? How heavy is your pack with the water bladder? Where did you find your sun hoodie and shirts? Wish you more magical moments and travel safe!

    Best series ever! I love it and can’t wait for the next one. I feel for you though, the reality of filming 11,000 miles = walking 12,000 + miles. You were looking for suggestions, perhaps cutting back on all those shots of you walking away from and to the camera. That could save you some distance. Your POV and drone shots are amazing so I don’t think it would take anything away, except for some of my stress. Lol, I was freaking out when you were walking on those rocks and all I could think was “oh no, she has to go back and get her camera and do it again!” 😳 😆 Also, thanks for showing the map in this video. One thing that I’ve learned during long hikes is drink electrolytes and I always carry a small squeeze tube of peanut butter. Good luck on your journey and happy hiking!!

    I think flexibility would be key; tides, fluctuating weather conditions, many emotions, energy levels in one day, gut instinct, townships, food rewards, treacherous parts, Plan B and C for that day, painting ugly things, stuff out of your control, imperfection, and what could a bad day look like?
    (lost, no food, silence, self time vs alone, no water, no communication, no map, freezing, or overheated, no shelter)
    and what you feel like at the time in each space.
    Each day will present a new arrangement of all these things as variables! Planning and being flexible will make it easier, as you have done so far!
    I wish you well, strong and weak. I wish that most of your days ahead to be free, and wonderful!
    Perhaps going from town to town might help as a start of a day and a finish of a day. If you wanted to get some miles down, you could take your camera out, and then later as a reward, sketch it at the end of the day. Or take a still shot from your drone, and do that at the end of the day.
    Perhaps knee and ankle supports might help too?
    As I advised last thread on your other channel, bamboo socks help for tired feet and many bandaids over each one, help for blisters and since your feet are your tools, Perhaps resting when sore too?
    Or maybe if tired, harder days, could be bus, or car, and part of your journey in some BnB's so you could take a foot spa in the car, and use the stay there as if it is a temporary studio!
    The pressure is off....and you are still doing it. Fun and excitement vs pain and suffering! You look like a weight is off your shoulders as you embark on a personal journey, doing it.
    I hear in the distance of our suburb of Dulwich Hill, in the Inner West of Sydney, someone practicing their bag pipes here on a Sunday morning. Luckily they are really good at it. I hear them often! How to feel like I am in Scotland with you!
    On that note, lol, thanks for your hard work, filming, drone work, editing and brush miles....
    From across the miles,
    Down under.
    In kindred spirit,

    So this must be a normal thing for the Scots, looks like trails are quite good and maintained, as is the signage. Remember one step or section at a time, that is how my husband and I kayaked all of Lake Tahoe. Of coarse it took us 4 years!

But with covid still a big thing (I still haven’t caught it and I do everything in my power to not get at least as long as I can) I don’t want to travel abroad (and thanks to Brexit I need a passport now for the UK. I always love watching your treks throughout Scotland. I just cannot wait to get there. ❤️ And those seals! Wow! I’m glad you kept your distance. Those guys can be very aggressive and mean. There's a seal that visits coastal towns on Tasmania. He recently developed an obsession with the traffic cones on the road that runs along the beach. There's video of him playing with the cones. The locals were worried about him being on the road (even though it's not a major one). There's a video of locals taking the cones down to the beach with the seal following. Once on the beach he starts throwing the cones around and chasing after them. Super cute.

      Oh, and the hiking stuff you asked for: You'll have one of two options for footwear, but you'll want something sturdier than what you appear to be wearing in the video. I'd recommend either actual hikers for ankle support (the Ryka brand is my favorite, they last for years), or barefoot shoes. But barefoot shoes take months to acclimate to, so you'd have to work on strengthening the muscles of your soles at home before you wear them out hiking or you might accidentally hurt yourself. Either way, I wish you luck!

      @sarahinscotland  2 года назад +1

      I answered this in other comment so I'll paste this here.
      There are lots of trails all over Scotland, some are better marked than others. There is not a solid trail along the entire coast of Scotland, but many walking paths that aren't "official" can be seen too. I use a site called All Trails and another one called Walk Highlands. Both are excellent for planning!
      In Scotland we don't have the 'no trespassing' sign plague that America does (and maybe other countries).
      In Scotland it’s known as the “Right to Roam” land reform act which “allows members of the public to access most land and inland water in Scotland for recreational or other purposes. This is provided that the right to roam is exercised reasonably and responsibly. It does not apply to land on which there are buildings, or shelters including tents and caravans. It also does not apply to gardens.“
      When Wolfy visited me in US, he was SHOCKED by all the fences with big “no trespassing signs” even in the wilderness. It’s a whole different lifestyle.

    So without knowing the terrain of your entire journey, or how remote some parts may be, I'm not going to preach to you about making sure you have at least some survival gear, and not one of those pre-made kits from the supermarket. The weather can change quickly and drastically on the coast. So do your research on important items to have, and on the location of your hike. I know it will add weight. but the risk of not having a few life saving materials outweighs the benefit.

    • @sarahinscotland
      @sarahinscotland  2 года назад +4

      Yes absolutely. Over the past few years I’ve watched hundreds of hiking, trekking, backpacking, camping, and survival videos.
      And I’ve hiked and camped in a ton of areas around Scotland, even camped in a gale .. don’t recommend that😂 anyways yes when I start going on more remote trails I will have all the survival gear. Wolfy and I are taking a winter wilderness survival course too.

    • @MrsBarnabas
      @MrsBarnabas 2 года назад +2

      @@sarahinscotland Sarah, take that kit with you, even on the apparently 'easy' legs. You can get into trouble anywhere. When you went towards that first cave, I thought, "Please, don't go in alone!" and equally, along that narrow cliff stretch, it would be so easy to slip and get stuck, or slip on the rocks on a beach with no-one about, or even just badly twist an ankle along the stony paths.
      The other big safety thing is, are you checking in with texts to Wolfie every hour, giving your current location?
      Far more people get into trouble on the 'easy' parts than anywhere else. So yes, please, take that survival kit with you all the time, and keep a basic first aid kit and high protein bar in your pocket or waist bag, not in your main bag, and your water in a belt pouch.
      We all have this inbuilt thing that says, "Oh, stop fussing! I know what I'm doing. I'll be fine." Just like the blokes my husband has dived with, who've dived for years, and who owe their lives to the fact that he kept his cool and got them out of a mess.
      (And in telling me, for the holiday journals, he never seemed to realise what he'd done - it was just the serious way he'd taken his training, and incidentally, been mocked by some for being so 'pernickety' about it all!)

      I feel better, and I actually assumed that you likely have the outdoor experience of a person who would take a winter survival course and basic gear. But you just never know. I was barely 18 when a bunch of us decided to go on a rafting trip in early spring when the water was both freezing and still pretty high. It was my years of experience rafting with my parents that likely saved all 9 of us kids after being swept into a pile of fallen branches with water raging over and around. We were stuck for an hour. They wanted to get into the water and try to free the rafts so we could continue. I had to insist that everyone stay on. Eventually we managed to get the rafts to the wrong side of the river, on the side of a mountain just across from a park where we could see people. The water was not safe to swim, and again I had to insist that we stay put because they wanted to climb up and try to find a way out going away from civilization. And this was before cell phones. We spent hours soaking wet on the side of a cliff a stones throw from safety. It was getting dark, but eventually we were rescued by another rogue rafting group. So I suppose that experience alone does not allow me make sure that every person going an an outdoor adventure is prepared. You are doing everything you should. So just have fun and enjoy!

      I thinks it’s way better to be on the side of caution. And I love hearing from people with good outdoor skills!
