At first I was DEVASTATED about yuzu retiring from competitive but honestly now I’ve thought about it I’m actually really happy. It’s obviously going to be so much better for his mental and physical health, but also means we’re going to be able to see routines that aren’t limited by the ISU scoring requirements. He’s going to be able to showcase his artistry - w/o worrying about things not scoring well - which is where he really shines
Now he's free from ISU rules, but in the other hand I feel like in shows he's doing more what he's told than what he wants and decides in regards to coreography. I know they have coreographers for competition, but it seems more personal. But maybe he's planning to work on his own shows? That would be the best!!!
I can sort of understand Eteri being angry at all the speculation and media focus. Things aren’t good right now in Russia and I wouldn’t want to be accused of any lack of loyalty by the government either.
I think the age limit was raised mostly because of the stress and the whole thing with Camilla. People just don't want these young girls to be taken advantage of anymore, but if they want to do something about these short careers and don't want the girls to get hurt as badly, the ISU would have to change the judging criteria and the ratings. You have to pay more attention to the technique and you have to evaluate the technique more strictly. Then the coaches might put more value on it and therefore the figure skaters too. The wrong technique, which we are increasingly observing, is one of the reasons why careers are so short, because that is unhealthy!
@@kara1460 fr and what’s honestly the difference between 15yr old Kamilla (who turned 16 like a month after the Olympics) and a skater that turned 17 shortly before the Olympics. In my opinion a 15 year old and a 17 year old aren’t really THAT different in terms of mental stabilty and ability to deal with stress/pressure.
@@kaiaswrld it's all about legality. Most likely the ISU is just trying to save themselves from the legal mess involving what the law considers "protected persons" and by raising it to 17 they are doing just that. If Kamila had been 17 she would have simply been banned without further questions being asked first.
@@Anne-il6ek if it had been a month later she wouldn’t have been able to skate tho. The age was under 16 for protected skaters, not 17. So if Kamillas birthday was just a month earlier, none of it would be an issue, she just would’ve been banned immediately. So why does the age need to be 17? Why couldn’t it be 16? Or why couldn’t they have gotten rid of the whole “protected person” thing, like honestly if they thought 15yr olds were old enough to compete senior then why were they “protected” it just makes no sense to me, because 16 year olds weren’t under that, if it was for all minors then I would understand it a bit better but WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A 15 and 16 year old?? Why are 15 year olds protected but 16 year olds aren’t? It just makes zero sense.
I'm still sad for Yuzuru leaving but to be honest he might be happier as a retired pro athlete. I've recently rewatched "Loser" on Netflix where Surya Bonaly said very clearly that she was reborn when she turned pro since she could finally express herself. Hopefully, he'll start to do shows also in the rest of the world. I wanna see the change in ISU age a bit positively since it's a gradual process as it was for gymnastics. Most of the female medalists in Tokyo 2020 were over 22 (Vanessa Ferrari was 30) and coaches are now thinking about a peak from 20 to 28! This was unthinkable years ago!
I think the goal of the age raise was to avoid the situation with Kamila where they can’t do anything because of the protected person thing. So, it may not change much but at least, if someone ends up doping in the olympics there hopefully won’t be such a mess.
I don’t think changing the age limit is gonna do anything tbh. It’s just gonna make the junior field more competitive and o don’t think it’s gonna stop any abuse, it’s just gonna make it so that we don’t have to see the abuse in international competition as often. But honestly it doesn’t make any sense. I’m pretty sure that Alyssa liu and Kamilla were the only two skaters under 16 at the Olympics anyways. They should’ve just taken out the “protected person” thing for 15 year olds because I think that most 15year old girls (that ARENT on puberty blockers) are fully grown into their adult body so they should be competing senior and I think if they are old enough to compete senior than they should be old enough to deal with the consequences of their actions. I don’t blame Kamilla for the doping tho, a 15 year old doesn’t choose to dope by herself, but she shouldnt have been allowed to skate.
@@kaiaswrld I don’t know if the protected person thing is up to the ISU, I’m not sure that they could have acted on that. But I think it’s good that they at least attempted something. There’s a point where you can’t do anything if an entire country is willing to sacrifice young girls bodies just to get medals. At least these won’t be senior medals, which are usually considered to me the most honorable ones.
I am a figure skater and Yuzuru was one of the reasons I wanted to skate. I remember I first saw him in middle school and thought he was terrific. I really looked up to him and I was sad he won't compete, but I was beginning to worry about his body so it was the right choice. As for the age limit, I do think it was the right thing to raise age limit but I am not sure how much of an effect it's gonna make. I am going to hope it helps a lot and we get new faces and longer-lasting health for the skaters.
I'm more surprised that people are surprised Yuzu is retiring than the fact that he's retiring. I mean he's had so many injury issues in these past couple seasons and really it just seems like a healthy/natural next step is doing exhibitions and his new goal to start his own show/tour
I really disagree with the idea that raising the age won’t change anything. If you can’t compete as a senior until your 17, an 18 year old “expiration” makes it dicey in terms of ensuring coaches like Eteri can cultivate Olympic champions. Especially with the Olympics being every four years, the chances of her having athletes who can compete, FAIRLY (ie, not doping), are much smaller. If she manages to get a few 17/18 year olds who can qualify but they’re bodies are injured and falling apart due to years of the crazy training methods when they were young, they will be less likely to land their routines, allowing for other skaters who have refined their technique safely and properly to shine. Longevity in the sport is going to (albeit slowly) matter over shooting stars who peak at 16/17. I do think that it will take time to see this change but I can’t help but think about sports similar to figure skating (in terms of judging and culture) like gymnastics. When I was a child, petite and small and YOUNG gymnasts ruled supreme. They raised the competition age to 16 and while we didn’t see immediate changes, power gymnasts with strong muscles and strength rule now instead of the teeny tiny petite girls. I remember that scandal at the Beijing summer Olympics years ago where they believed one of the Chinese gymnasts was actually like 12 or something. And back then that was a big deal because being super tiny (like a 12 year old) would give her a HUGE advantage over older girls. But fast forward two Olympic seasons later and team USA dominated with very muscular and strong gymnasts (like, have you seen Simone Biles’ arms and abs when she’s in training? She’s JACKED!). I think a similar thing will have to happen with female skating over the next few years in order for skaters in their late teens and twenties to be able to compete. Especially since the judging system changed again to favor high technical components even more 🙄. If these girls want to be able to compete and win at the Olympics (I emphasize the Olympics only because that’s when the world at large pays attention to figure skating, though for us figure skating fans we obviously pay attention every year), they have to learn how to cultivate strength and endurance. They have to ensure their bodies will last past 18 if they want to be an Olympian. Even Russia would stop supporting Eteri if she can’t produce girls who can keep up with older, stronger girls who use strength to get their spins and jumps and not relying on being super small to ensure they get their rotations in. I hate the idea that just because it won’t be a dramatic or quick change, this will mean nothing. As someone old enough to have literally witnessed how gymnastics has changed over the years with a change like raising the age, I can ensure you that change IS coming. This is going to really change a lot with female skaters. We’ll just have to wait and see.
I'm still not sure if it'll work but I really hope you'll be right. It was such a contrast at the Olys to see the Japanese girls strong legs (Kaori's THIGHS look so strong!) and the tiny Russian's legs where the knee is the thickest part. :/
@@aguy3664 And? Did you not read what I wrote? You can’t bet your entire program and training on only girls who will be 17 during an Olympic season so they can compete and then when their bodies break down a year later toss em out. Eteri gets away with it now because she has younger girls who can still compete. Once the minimum age is 17, that wouldn’t work. Especially with training too. Why put your child in Eteri’s school if your child will be 15 or 16 during the next Olympics and can’t compete? In that case, it makes sense to train with a coach who will help you build and cultivate a longer career so you have a shot at the Olympics. Eteri’s own training system works because she has a range of girls who can compete as seniors that she can use to motivate the older girls. If you’re 17, you’re going to be worried about the 15 and 16 year olds who haven’t started dealing with injuries and issues yet. But if those girls aren’t able to compete, it makes it harder as a coach to use the young girls to push the older ones. And again, what about the ones who just miss the Olympics due to being 15/16? They just never get a shot at the Olympics because they were born in the wrong year? An “expiration” of 17/18 with athletes when the minimum age is 17 is not sustainable. You can strike lightening once or twice (like the examples you use) but that’s not consistent. It’s not something worth banking on. And over time, assuming Russian athletes are allowed to compete internationally again, the Russian federation will be forced to put their attention on athletes who can make it past 18-20 and compete. And to do that will require honing good technique and strength. Again, we saw a similar trend in other sports that raised the minimum age. I’m not sure what point you think you’re making. Just because it happened once or twice when the minimum age was 15 doesn’t mean it’ll happen again when the minimum age is 17. It’s definitely not a trend to bet money on it. It doesn’t give this style of training enough if a safety net to bank on. My point still stands.
@t Exactly, it was wonderful to see mature athletes winning. We need mature competitors, not abused and starved little girls as we saw in both gymnastics and skating!
I swear to god people who are against or not happy about the raising of the age limit are people who have never heard about ''pacing'' athletes career. That is what your supposed to do to avoid peaking too early and that is what the new age limit will force coaches to do and if a coach cant do that then they are bad at what they do. Childrens well being should always come before medals.
Yuzuru emphasized he'll always be an athlete than an entertainer. He'll still going to tackle difficult jumps and combos (e.g. 4T-seq-4T in FaOI, 4A) incorporated in programs. I don't think he'll only be in shows or galas...it could be much more. He might continue his AI judging research etc. What is glossed over is the fact that he talked about being evaluated and how it doesn't match his growth. That's why he decided to transition to professional FS.
Well just based on Yuzuru pouring water on himself during FaOI, I feel like the Fanyus will still have plenty of content to live on in the future ahaha. He deserves the best send-off from the competitive scene. He’s worked hard and had such a long successful competitive career. He can even rest his ankles! Yuzuru: I’m still going to be attempting 4As. Me: He’s going to use moderation right?
I'm gonna miss yuzu in competitions but I also hope to see his pro skating at some point. just full-on yuzu artistry without any isu regulations, that's my dream. I hope if he goes on tour with an ice show there's one performance in finland^^
The age limit thing should have been implemented years ago. It just makes sense, especially after the Kamila controversy. Any other skater over 16 would have been kicked out of the Olympics, however they used her being a minor as an excuse. That put a bad taste in everyone's mouth. I'm not sure what will happen to Eteri skaters, but I honestly think the ISU should sanction Eteri and other coaches like her, because it's clear they don't care about their skaters and just use them for success. I personally don't care about solo Yuzu stans leaving the fandom. They came for one person, stayed for one person and they might leave for one person. That's the deal they made and I'm not going to demand that anyone stay if they don't want to. I will say this: them threatening everyone who says they will look at ISU competitions afterwards has been extremely annoying.
@@amyg4115 Because Yuzuru was screwed over the ISU so they're boycotting all future ISU events. That's kind of the great tragedy of solo stans - they think their fave will be exempt from the ISU because they're legends when in actuality, it doesn't matter how great the are, the ISU is an unstoppable machine in terms of horrors and if it wants to screw them over they will. Yuzuru is far from the first person to be the victim of this and he def won't be the last.
The age limit should have been raised when 15-year old jumping machine Lipinski won the Olympics over Kwan, and then four years later 16-year old Hughes also won the gold. About Yuzu fans - they don't treat anyone want to watch and follow future fs events, they're simply leaving and rightly so. No one thinks ISU will change, this will happen again but since Yuzu is the biggest star in the sport, whose fans traveled around the world to watch their favorite, him turning professional will effect ISU really bad financially.
No it's not because she was a minor that she wasnt disqualified it was because of when the test came back her not testing positive for drugs at the Olympics and the whole cases situation
"If it looks like a duck, talks like a duck, it's a duck trying to get a US visa," HILARIOUS. Thanks for your fantastic channel and videos really diving into what's happening in the skating world!
I actually forgot that the skating lesson exists since I’ve blocked them a long time ago. I just found their comments so mean spirited. Like yea they always seem to know all the gossip but also, these are athletes, not celebrities. Online culture has really invaded the privacy of their lives and I’m not here for that.
Repeatedly Yuzuru Hanyu has said he’s not a celebrity, he’s an athlete. I think that we as fans can enjoy the skaters in competition, in ice shows, giving interviews and posting on their social medias, but anything more (which is what the skating lesson repeatedly violates) is going further than that. Even movie stars don’t deserve to have their privacy breached and we as fans should not encourage that.
There’s a difference between enjoying watching skaters competing, performing in ice shows, giving interviews and posting on their social medias, compared to violating their right to privacy. Yuzuru Hanyu has repeatedly said he is not a celebrity, he is an athlete. And I think it’s easy to respect those boundaries, it’s why I don’t support the skating lesson, they don’t respect those boundaries
I think the point of raising the age limit was to force coaches to teach in a more sustainable way. I have mixed feelings, are you really a champion if you shine for 1-2 seasons? The longeavity of a career creates legends like Katarina Witt, Irina Slutskaya, Michelle Kwon, Evgeni Pluschenko, Yuzuru Hanyu, etc. I was very disappointed that Elizaveta Tuktamysheva wasn't chosen for the Olympics. She's a mature woman, still competitive, with goods skills, so it is possible to make athletes who can stay for long and on a high level.
I think the rules that limit creativity need to be changed or else there definitely wont be new stars. I mean, spins are so similar from one skater to the next, step sequences require flailing and twisting, unaesthethic positions get lots of bonus points, and choreography lacks individually.
Absolutely it would also help make the sport more popular in general I think due to the peogrammes being more engaging. Take Sasha Trusova for example, her show routines are beautiful, powerful, emotional and personal but when it comes to her short and free programmes it starts to feel more like jump after jump after jump because thats what shes rewarded for. And people always say she lacks artistry but she doesn't i've seen it in show programmes it just doesn't seem to transfer across to competitions because of the scoring system.
For those of you on the ice skating circuit, for those of us in Australia the only time we see him skate is in competition. I was a fan of Japanese skaters before Yuzuru, in particular Mao ASADA and Wakaba Higuichi.
Paola let's be real here please Yuzuru made it known that he felt disappointed with his last seasons and decided to retire bc he wasn't being rewarded fairly: his point had been reducing a lot especially on PCS when compared to his previous seasons (even when it was clear that had improved on various things) and all of that due to robbery and politics to favor other athletes, not bc of his injuries. The fact that he still wants to land the 4A says a lot on how confident he is on his body and what he is capable to do
That seems like an unfair comment to make directly to Paola - why is your opinion and your interpretation of Yuzu's words the only "real" one? Why are you the arbitrator of what's "real"? Paola is only expressing her opinion, just as you can express yours. None of us can not should speak over Yuzu's words.

For once I agree with Eteri lol. He's been following ET's daughter, and reporting her every move. Its stalkerish imo. TSL can be b*tchy and nasty. A friend of mine was on the receiving end of some horrendous nasty comments by them years ago. Best of luck to Yuzu on his future professional career. I loved mine, so I know he's going to definitely have a ball! 💖🏴⛸️
pfft the isu doesn't care about eteri's methods, if anything they'd be trying to help her (albeit subtly now since ppl are now more aware of how mentally and physically abusive her training is). people just want to see the girl that jumps multiple quads and that's exactly what eteri gives them--sales, views, money. they just want to not feel so attacked in the case of another doping scandal because it's bad press. at least that's my take. the isu is just a bunch of corrupt fools who only care about themselves, even if it is at the expense of skaters and their wellbeing.
literally wheezing for the drama (thanks covid :| ) but I also feel bad for the fanyu, they really had a lot of love for him so i can imaging the news will sting for quite some time
You shouldn't feel bad for Yuzu fans. Yuzu explained why he decided to leave the competitions behind and turn professional, and it seems he is full of ideas for the future. He said he doesn't want to evaluated by scores anymore, he kept improving since 2015 but his scores, especially PCS got lower. So fans are happy he has left competitions, bad judging, ISU and JSF who won't be able to use him anymore and get money out of him and everyone is waiting for what he'll do in the future as a pro athlete.
While I do agree that raising the age limit won't change much in terms of corrupt behaviour within the discipline...at least it will bring some improvement in terms of the procedure followed in case of a positive doping test...like, one of the main reasons kamila was allowed to skate was due to the protected person status as minor. If skating age is raised then none of the skaters are minors (including the ones who may falsify there age cause they're not minors on paper) and thus won't enjoy the unfair privilege of being a protected person and all the subsequent leniency given to them.
Hanyu has won everything more than once, he has nothing to prove. No one will ever even get near his record. He ISN'T the model for Yuri. It's a previous Japanese skater.
An entire generation of great skating is literally devolving before our eyes. Yuzuru and Nathan Chen reached the pinnacle of great male figure skaters who have left an indelible mark upon the the world of Figure Skating which will be very difficult to achieve. There's nothing left for them to prove.
Raising the age limit will cause changes because transitioning in competition from junior to senior is daunting. If you don’t get to start competing until you are 17, it’s going to cause a lot of changes. Imagine if the first time Anna competed was the Olympics. The confidence will be much different if her first international competition was the Olys.
I mean, it probably wouldn't be the first international competition for someone who is as good as the Russian girls are, I mean, the 3A did compete internationally a lot as juniors. Also, the Olympics are early in the year, and most skaters who are at that level compete several times during the first half of the season. Zagitova won Olympic gold her first season as a senior, and she had done at least the grand prix, and Europeans first.
A lot of young skaters will retire than before. Because the competition in juniors will be a lot higher since they will compete between 13-17 now, but the spots for JGP, Junior Worlds will remain the same. Since the competition will be bigger, the technical level will improve, therefore it will be more jumps, which will result in more injuries. Also skaters will loose motivation if they can go to seniors only from age 17. They will focus more on school and leave the sport behind. ISU should care more about the corrupt judging than raising the age limit.
I feel so bad for the kids who will turn 15 when the age limit is 16, and then the next year they'll turn 16 but the age limit will be 17 🥺. It's so hard to stay consistant and train that hard, especially when things aren't in their favour
@@th0tdaughter : l checked their instagram posts for the past several years. Anya liked Sasha's posts regularly in the past but Sasha NEVER once responded in the same way. Of course all interaction btwn these girls on social network has stopped after the Olympics.
I was just thinking how long I've been watching the skating lesson, and I think it was the year before or the year Davis and White won the olympic medal over virtue and moir... so two full cycles, right? like 8 years? 9. WOW now I feel old. I really enjoy your channel :D and I'm going to miss Yuzu! he is such a gentleman and such a competitor , he will be missed as a driving force in the sport.
I don't think Yuzuru retiring is gonna affect the sport's popularity in Japan. I mean, it's not like South Korea, where no one watched or cared about figure skating before Yuna Kim. Midori Ito, Shizuka Arakawa, Takeshi Honda, Daisuke Takahashi and Mao are only some of the names that were already pretty popular when Yuzuru started competing.
@@paolala can you talk about the juniors? Tbh I think juniors are more interesting this year, especially since most of the juniors this year will likely turn senior and be at the Olympics in 4 years
I think raising the age limit is a good thing, but I wish they had a) changed so that junior ladies aren't allowed quads in their programs, and b) allowed for quads in the short for senior ladies. Not allowing quads for junior ladies as well as raising the age limit for seniors would make it less worth it for coaches to use them up and toss them when they break, because the peak before reaching the current Eteri expiration date seem to be the season before when they would be able to become seniors under the new rule. The loss of no quads for juniors would be worth it if it kept skaters from ending up like Medvedeva, who at 22 y/o is unable to turn her back in one direction. I understand that injuries are pretty much inevitable for top athletes in most sports, and what Trusova, Sherbakova, Valieva and the rest of Eteris skaters do is just incredible, but to me, it doesn't seem worth it if the cost is knowingly teaching young teenagers a technique that more likely than not will ruin their bodies for the rest of their lives. And that's without factoring in the psychological abuse that we know from Kostornaia among others. I know that there are toxic environments in skating clubs here as well, and Sweden doesn't have the best skaters in the world, but there's a limit to how much you can train, and no coach would be able to forbid the mother of a teenager to live with them. That's at least worth something to me.
I feel like figure skating will suffer from Yuzu retiring and the Russians being banned. To me, it seems like Yuzu and the Russians were bringing the viewers for figure skating and the money, so honestly, the other federations need to step it up, I hope that the Korean federation takes this chance and tries to popularize skating again, they have wonderful skaters as well as the Japanese. But I saw some pictures of some of the shows in Japan with the US skaters and the stadium was awfully empty, it honestly worries me, because I really love figure skating and as it is right now its already kind of hard to watch the competitions in some countries, so I fear that the lack of funding and interest from the audience will kill the sport slowly. I really hope I'm wrong but honestly, after the Olympics, everything seems possible :(
I think that Chamellow is correct, and the primary goal is to prevent another situation where an athlete is too young to be punished if caught doping. As I and a lot of other people said at the time, if she's too young to be held accountable, then she's too young to skate competitively. I guess the ISU agreed. No, this doesn't automatically fix everything wrong with figure skating today. The scoring needs to change to de-incentivize quads, judges need to be able to use slow motion instant replay to catch and penalize pre-rotation, and the judging procedure needs a total overhaul to prevent vote trading. But it is at least a start.
this is literally the end. without yuzu and the russians no one is gonna watch it Edit: i sound super negative but isu is making everything worse. it's not going to be the same anymore
I think we shouldn’t see things like this, and we should keep watching and see what happens without the russian girls because I’m sure we’ll be pleasantly surprised by what women figure skating can look like without this pressure of young girls who sacrifice their bodies and cheat on their techniques to get medals for a year, or maybe two if they can resist. And of course when I say that, I’m not attacking the russians girls because I’ve been rooting for them for years, but the system behind them needs to stop.
Honestly the russians made me not wanna watch bc of the Eteri bonus. Kills the whole point when you know that the podium is already decided before the show begins. But overall I'd say what really killing this sport is the ISU. I haven't watch the competitions in a long time bc of them.
@@chamallow989 No cause both Trusova and Anna have outviewed nathan's free program video, the Russians carried women's figure skating, it will be very interesting to see how bad the season would do without the Russians The points about wrong technique are incorrect too, because I can think of only three women with correct technique currently competing (Rika, Karen Chen and The Empress)
The Russians ruined figure skating. I loved the sport much more before 2014. A lot of long-term fans haven't enjoyed what it has turned into. And I can happily do without Yuzu's fans. Figure skating feels too much like high school at the moment.
eteri left the comment after tsl actually turned up at the rink and i think it freaked diana out idk. like im not supporting eteri but tsl was stalking a 19 year old girl
You should choose your words more wisely - that is fabrication regarding Dave stalking "Diana". He splits his Adult FS lessons/activities across a few prominent ice rinks in northern New Jersey. Diana's review before an American judge was unannounced & it so happened by chance that he was there that day.
@@SubtleSavageIowaUS that’s true but it’s still weird that he was continuously posting private information about her for a few days, and then tweeted that she was surprised to see him. seems excessive and purposeful to me
He wasn’t stalking her, he made it very clear he skates at that rink and was going to his normal lesson, just a coincidence they were there at the same time.
@@victoriasuzanne6293 Fair enough - but being being a part of the entourage & the head coach of a figure skater who submitted a failed urine test that came to light during the Olympics (notice the diplomacy I employed there....) - you're simply bound to become the day's new "cause célèbre"...so, it comes with the territory!
@@SubtleSavageIowaUS oh 100% i hate eteri but i feel like it’s unfair when people harass her daughter as if she has any control over her mother and her actions
I'm not an Eteri stan. Usually quite the opposite but this guy has to respect other people's boundaries. And again usually he has no proof. We here in Russia have so many toxic journalists that we're just simply fed up with all of that sh*t nonsense they call content. So I can understand her reaction
I agree! Diana’s personal life is hers to protect and share or not if she wants. Who she marries or sleeps with is her business, and not relevant to her sports career, contrary to Dave’s bullish!t gossip. It’s been clear to me that she and Gleb are in a relationship, so marriage is a valid next step if they choose. He seems very protective of her and she seems to have a great deal of respect and trust in him. He just used their marriage to further his theory of their transfer, and it’s pretty tasteless and akin to bottom feeding paparazzi behavior. Dave makes his career making fun of minor girls and it’s gross! As was the media’s (Christine Brennan) pursuit and harassment of Diana at the Olympics just because Eteri is her mother, which wasn’t her choice. You don’t pick your family, and expecting children to suffer for the perceived sins of their parents is wrong. Christine’s bullying and public shaming of Diana not answering media questions about her mom or Kamila and Gleb shielding Diana from media crossed a line. Christine ignored the fact that Diana is hard of hearing and wouldn’t be able to hear and decipher questions from dozens of shouting journalists, or lip read due to everyone wearing masks, and instead chose to claim that Glen’s statement that she doesn’t understand English and wouldn’t comment because it wasn’t her place or business was them playing the media since she is a US citizen born here, and only showed her dishonesty inherited from her mom literally made my blood boil! She isn’t involved in Kamala’s situation or her mother’s training environment, being coached in the US. And while she does speak English, Gleb was protecting her, knowing she couldn’t hear individual questions in that environment, or lip read through masks, is extremely shy during interviews, likely due to difficulties hearing and discomfort or lack of confidence communicating, especially considering how disabilities like that are viewed in Russia and other countries in that area. She relies on Gleb to be her ears and do most of the talking and that is fine! She doesn’t need to do that to skate! And no matter what anyone thinks of her skating abilities or shortcomings, what she is doing is pretty incredible considering her unique challenges due to neuro-sensory hearing loss and her efforts and successes should be applauded, not criticized and torn down and discouraged, and she shouldn’t be held to account for her mother’s actions and training methods-they have nothing to do with Diana and Gleb aside from being birthed and raised by Eteri. Clearly Eteri did something right with Diana, no matter how anyone feels about her coaching methods. As a parent, she raised a daughter with a disability that is often treated differently in Russia than here in the US, who has grown into a strong, hard working young woman who trains and competes in a sport dependent upon hearing music, showing confidence on the ice in spite of her extreme shyness off the ice, and who is brave and independent enough to train on another continent than her mom and family. She respectfully asked that her Private life be left to her to decide what she shares and what she chooses to keep to herself, and Dave’s disregard of that reasonable request is just not ok! Criticize her skating and edges and technique, but leave her private life and sex life, relationships and marriage alone! She did nothing to deserve the vitriol she receives! I admire her strength and determination to achieve her dreams and goals, without allowing her disability to hold her back, and finding a way despite the unique challenges she faces!
I really don’t know if the age limit thing helps. Mao Asada would have won the Olympics if she wasn’t too young. Instead she forced herself to keep competing at the top level for 4 more years, had injuries, and was ultimately too late
Your content is exceptional. I don't really know enough about the world of figure skating to say much about it. Although I do not like the age raising. It's stupid. I loved part 2! I savored it.
I beg to differ. Dave Lease does not make journalism, at least no 100% journalism at the skating lesson. He relishes with gossip and that's what makes his channel succesful
I’m new to being a figure skating fan, and it’s actually because of having watched Yuri On Ice recently. Why do we not like bringing it up? Is it like a sore subject for figure skating fans or something? Genuinely curious 😅
I wanna add two things 1- what's your take on Anna and Sasha cause, ever since the olympics I haven't really seen them like.. at all interacting. they're doing different shows never the same and with kosto's interview, the way sasha reacted in the olympics... is history repeating itself??? I really hope they stay friends dammit. 2- also what's ur take on Sasha and Mark?
I think that’s why Alina took Anna under her wing, so she would feel supported as Olympic champion and not receive only hate and criticism in Russia from those who felt Sasha should have won, like they did to Alina for beating Zhenya. Sasha thinking she deserved to win with a fall and under rotation in the short and multiple landing errors/step outs and an under rotated quad and 2A3T,no connection to the music or theme or any attempt to make it more than two footed skating from one jump to the next, while Anna had no falls, also gad quads and lutz loop combo, more difficult spins, steps, choreo, musicality and interpretation, is delusional on her part. She has made it clear that the only aspect of skating worth her time and effort are the jumps. Everything else is just an afterthought annoyance she puts minimal effort in to. She behaved horrifically, and Anna was treated like an accidental champion like was done to Alina, which is just plain wrong and disgusting
Yes ! Thank you, it’s so sad and disrespectful to the other skaters to consider that the lack of russian skaters makes the competitions useless. And Yuzuru Hanyu had a beautiful career, and now he decided to move on, and that’s just how things work, but there are so many amazing skaters. Ilia Malinin is coming with his 4A and I can’t wait to see what he’s gonna achieve. There’s just so much to look forward to !
It's actually really hasn't been super popular since the 90s with the whole Tonya/Nancy thing. Throughout the 90s they were alot of skating events on TV. Now they don't even have professional competitions anymore.
They're just dramatic... like their idol. I love and enjoy the sport and its talented athletes. I thank the retirees for their amazing contributions, their unforgettable moments over the years. I hope to see them again someday in different capacities related or non-related to Figure Skating. And, I look forward to watch the new crop of talents compete.
Sucks that i never got to see him live. I'll miss his skating. It sucks to say that i am hoping that his retirement retires that part of his fandom. Still wild out till this moment that such a guy that seems like a genuinely nice guy has such causes such... "unnecessary" reactions in some people. Also, i approve of them raising the age but I'd the judges don't start calling it like they should, raising the age won't do much. Also, eteri replying to Dave.... 😂
Well Liza's techique is still good🙂 But you are right. It would have been better if the ISU made something for the Evaluation of technique in figure skating to better it. As it is now, no judge is paying attention and judging properly, leading to no coach paying attention and skaters getting injured faster and having short careers. Apart from the fact that it is unfair to those who pay attention to good technique...
There must be a reason why skaters nowadays can't do both a (true) lutz and flip. I mean, a true, unbiased, uncontested lutz and flip. Is it truly that hard? It must be. Does it require some kind of hard foot position?
@@strawberrylime33 all jumps in skating is really hard, it takes a lot of strength, power, balance, and technique. However, I believe the fact that there are now so many competitors that compete with the flutz is due to the result of poor technique being ignored. The lutz jump takes off from a deep outside edge. The ISU right now is rather known for ignoring these edge issues for certain skaters. Some people receiving more edge calls than others, as well as a lot of over-scoring by the judges. (Edge calls are for docking points on wrong edge technique for a specific skill) Now, I mean more so that people are more concerned with getting the correct amount of rotations (often using pre-rotations to their advantage) than the technique and artistry of the sport. If you take a look at retired skater Yuna Kim, she really took into account the technique and artistry in skating. There are some great videos explaining lutz vs flutz. I really hope this helps :)
@@cocolee7375 Like I said. They should really beginn to look after the technique but they are to corrupt for that and that is just sad and unfair for skaters who look after their technique...
I feel like a lot of people or it could be just me have grown attached to Shoma and Kagiyama because of Yuzuru and they’re both so amazing already so I feel the Yuzuru stans will go cheer them in now
Boy you are so wrong if you think vast majority of Yuzu fans will continue to watch the sport and cheer for JSF pets Shoma and Yuma 🤭😅 Even the polite Japanese fans have had enough recently, not the mention the international fans, especially the Chinese Yuzu-only fans.
Ah yes, so this was not about protecting young skaters bla, bla, bla but to stop the Russians girls from winning or taking the entire podium. Finally, someone speaks the truth!
@@mariaritapieraccini3501 my comment is not about the changing of the age limit. Its about Russians not being allowed to participate due to the sanctions. I don't have a problem with one country taking a podium provided the skaters have longevity and there is still competition, without underdogs and established favorites the sport will die. Realistically I like figure skating because I like seeing skaters develop and we don't get to see that with many Russians due to the intense competition within the country. Russian skaters are brilliant, there is no denying that, and I enjoy watching them skate but I want to see new faces from different federations. Figure skating really punishes skaters with the way that the isu provides comp placements to countries rather then individuals and the lack of high level coaches, so seeing skaters from smaller feds who often don't place high enough in competition to earn more than 1 place (dispite sometimes deserving it over others) succeed will be a nice change. My problem isn't with Russians, it's with the way the system benifits them and America everytime. Skaters with comparable skills to say Mariah Bell don't get the same opportunities she does. I like how you completely ignored the part of my comment that talks about retirements though. I'm just trying to make the best of a poor situation and I want to see skaters who have been national champs for years get opportunities internationally.
I agree with raising the age limit but I think it should have been raised to 18. Personally I think Eteri and her entire team should be banned from the sport permanently because of the damage her training methods leave on the skaters she trains. I would be interested to see what the health of all the girls she has trained 10 years after their competitive careers are over.
He’s going to be able to showcase his artistry - w/o worrying about things not scoring well - which is where he really shines
so true!
when i read it that morning i was like YES HES FREE FROM THE COMPETITIVE SKATING MAFIA 😭😭 imma miss him but im so happy for him too
Now he's free from ISU rules, but in the other hand I feel like in shows he's doing more what he's told than what he wants and decides in regards to coreography.
Exactly! He's not quitting. Just changing direction 😉🏴⛸️

Ja 👍🏽
I am so happy he's satisfied enough to retire happily. We will forever support you Yuzuru Hanyu 💗
Changing the age isn't going to change anything because the root of the problem is the corruption and politics in skating.
You know you've made it when the world's most hated coach tells you that you have no honor.
Free publicity from the greediest being on Earth may taste as a golden medal
olympic champion and the silver medalisy this year where both 17 4 years ago olympic silver medalist was a 17 year old
@@aguy3664 And?
If you don't mind could you summarise everything you said, I wanna read it but I can't concentrate cause of this headache that I have
I swear to god people who are against or not happy about the raising of the age limit are people who have never heard about ''pacing'' athletes career.
Yea I agree that the decision Yuzuru made took STRENGTH. I’m so fucking proud of him
He is the legend, and he IS the moment. I hope he knows that
I'm glad Yuzu can focus now more on his artistic side, that's where he shines the most.
I’m glad Yuzuru was able to decide when to retire instead of injury deciding for him
Well just based on Yuzuru pouring water on himself during FaOI, I feel like the Fanyus will still have plenty of content to live on in the future ahaha.
I understand why Yuzu retired and I’m glad he’ll still be doing shows, but I’m so sad we’ll never get to see him in competition again.
YUZURU HANYU IS THE ALEXANDER HAMILTON OF FIGURE SKATING, I think we can all agree on that! I love you for that comparison!! 😍😍
Well said
Why are they saying that?

I actually forgot that the skating lesson exists since I’ve blocked them a long time ago. I just found their comments so mean spirited. Like yea they always seem to know all the gossip but also, these are athletes, not celebrities. Online culture has really invaded the privacy of their lives and I’m not here for that.
Luna, I find your commentary rather passé....these figure skaters do become celebrities within their sport once at the world stage, etc....
At the world level, these athletes ARE celebrities.
@@lunalexi2462 Correct 100%.
I’m no longer watching competitions only shows but no one will have yuzurus impact
Katarina Witt looks like a cow on ice. Contrary, Valieva looks like a super human.
Exactly! And she could've done really well in the Olympics too!
Weird time for the FS community
I love Yuzu ❤️ I just wish him the best in his future
For those of you on the ice skating circuit, for those of us in Australia the only time we see him skate is in competition. I was a fan of Japanese skaters before Yuzuru, in particular Mao ASADA and Wakaba Higuichi.
Paola let's be real here please
Yuzuru made it known that he felt disappointed with his last seasons and decided to retire bc he wasn't being rewarded fairly: his point had been reducing a lot especially on PCS when compared to his previous seasons (even when it was clear that had improved on various things) and all of that due to robbery and politics to favor other athletes, not bc of his injuries.
None of us can not should speak over Yuzu's words.

pfft the isu doesn't care about eteri's methods, if anything they'd be trying to help her (albeit subtly now since ppl are now more aware of how mentally and physically abusive her training is). people just want to see the girl that jumps multiple quads and that's exactly what eteri gives them--sales, views, money. they just want to not feel so attacked in the case of another doping scandal because it's bad press. at least that's my take. the isu is just a bunch of corrupt fools who only care about themselves, even if it is at the expense of skaters and their wellbeing.

@@thulekovish8188 aww thank you so much
You shouldn't feel bad for Yuzu fans. Yuzu explained why he decided to leave the competitions behind and turn professional, and it seems he is full of ideas for the future. He said he doesn't want to evaluated by scores anymore, he kept improving since 2015 but his scores, especially PCS got lower. So fans are happy he has left competitions, bad judging, ISU and JSF who won't be able to use him anymore and get money out of him and everyone is waiting for what he'll do in the future as a pro athlete.
gonna miss yuzu so much ahh D:
Eteri is like the Russian Kris Kardashan. The devil works hard but Eteri works harder.

So eloquently spoken ✨👌🏻 thank you Paola!
I feel so bad for the kids who will turn 15 when the age limit is 16, and then the next year they'll turn 16 but the age limit will be 17 🥺. It's so hard to stay consistant and train that hard, especially when things aren't in their favour
Better than child labour and breaking their bodies honestly.
The one thing I need to know is if Sasha and Anna are still friends though
friends on ice rink, that's it.
they stopped liking each other’s post’s and didn’t post each other on their birthdays like they did in past years, so probably not
@@th0tdaughter : l checked their instagram posts for the past several years. Anya liked Sasha's posts regularly in the past but Sasha NEVER once responded in the same way. Of course all interaction btwn these girls on social network has stopped after the Olympics.

Awwww 😭 Anna is such an innocent nice girl
And the assignments! That was interesting to look at. They came in later than we thought they would so that was chaotic
I was just thinking how long I've been watching the skating lesson, and I think it was the year before or the year Davis and White won the olympic medal over virtue and moir... so two full cycles, right? like 8 years? 9. WOW now I feel old.
I really enjoy your channel :D and I'm going to miss Yuzu! he is such a gentleman and such a competitor , he will be missed as a driving force in the sport.
the next video pls add Yuna Kim’s marriage. She’s getting married so congrats to her
I don't think Yuzuru retiring is gonna affect the sport's popularity in Japan. I mean, it's not like South Korea, where no one watched or cared about figure skating before Yuna Kim.
Midori Ito, Shizuka Arakawa, Takeshi Honda, Daisuke Takahashi and Mao are only some of the names that were already pretty popular when Yuzuru started competing.
are you gonna talk about the grand prix assignments?
yesss
I would be lying if I didn’t say I haven’t been waiting for these!!🤓🤓🤓
I feel like figure skating will suffer from Yuzu retiring and the Russians being banned.
8:01 solo stans? lmao is this kpop now? haha
great vid.
When are we gonna see Eteri and Paola duke it out?!?!
It's the end of an era, but there have been several eras in figure skating. Skating continues....
this is literally the end. without yuzu and the russians no one is gonna watch it
Edit: i sound super negative but isu is making everything worse. it's not going to be the same anymore
@@chamallow989 No cause both Trusova and Anna have outviewed nathan's free program video, the Russians carried women's figure skating, it will be very interesting to see how bad the season would do without the Russians
The points about wrong technique are incorrect too, because I can think of only three women with correct technique currently competing (Rika, Karen Chen and The Empress)
@@akul4629 who cares its just figure skating, we don’t need Russians to make it interesting
The Russians ruined figure skating. I loved the sport much more before 2014. A lot of long-term fans haven't enjoyed what it has turned into. And I can happily do without Yuzu's fans. Figure skating feels too much like high school at the moment.
Honey wake up new Pao La dropped :)))
Pls can u imagine seeing Eteri in person??? I'd be terrified lmao
FINALLY YOU POST
eteri left the comment after tsl actually turned up at the rink and i think it freaked diana out idk. like im not supporting eteri but tsl was stalking a 19 year old girl
@@amyg4115 I wish everyone could see your comment. I agree to every single word and wish Diana and Gleb the best of luck in their way
The hell with that hypocrite abuser
I really don’t know if the age limit thing helps. Mao Asada would have won the Olympics if she wasn’t too young. Instead she forced herself to keep competing at the top level for 4 more years, had injuries, and was ultimately too late
Your content is exceptional. I don't really know enough about the world of figure skating to say much about it. Although I do not like the age raising. It's stupid. I loved part 2! I savored it.
so happy about the age limit being raised
I beg to differ. Dave Lease does not make journalism, at least no 100% journalism at the skating lesson. He relishes with gossip and that's what makes his channel succesful
She’s coming after you Paola! 🤣🤣🤣💀
😭😭😭😭😭 The Yuzudepression. But really it was for the best.
Get your money, Yuzu
I’m new to being a figure skating fan, and it’s actually because of having watched Yuri On Ice recently.
Why do we not like bringing it up? Is it like a sore subject for figure skating fans or something? Genuinely curious 😅
The first time I saw him skate--I saw the damn 00000 on his skating leg. I knew he was gonna be good.
What do yo mean?
Also…Anna is 18 now 🥲💀😭
Thank you for this video
I ain't even know what's going on anymore
That guy was very disrespectful to criticise Diana's life. In no way do I support Eteri, but that was low.
Everyone talkin bout figure skating bein dead doesn’t know skating 👀
Gooo beeee!!!
Hi @Paola La, will you comment the grand prix assignments again like last year? I’m curious what you think about the upcoming season 😉
omfg l- I did not expect this eteri tea but im not complaining 😭 what is going on in this sport JSHDGHSJKJ
"If it walks like a duck and talks like a duck, it is a duck tryna get a U.S. visa."
Lmao
And now all we have left is flutz and floop kings and queens 😭. Figure skating is dead
Well Liza's techique is still good🙂
But you are right.
They should really beginn to look after the technique but they are to corrupt for that and that is just sad and unfair for skaters who look after their technique...
will you do a video for the grand prix assignments?
I feel like a lot of people or it could be just me have grown attached to Shoma and Kagiyama because of Yuzuru and they’re both so amazing already so I feel the Yuzuru stans will go cheer them in now

What we’re NOT going to do is call Dave Lease a journalist. Most of his stuff is attention grabbing tabloid garbage. It is not journalism.
Eteri is having a new ice rink built in Russia, I don't believe she is leaving Russia anytime soon.
off topic but does anyone know other channels other than TSL for figure skating news/updates and thoughts?
I'm still hopeful that all of the retirements and the Russians not participating will let us see some new faces and help out smaller feds
I'm with you. FS needs fresh faces, new talents, new styles.
@@hw5062 I understand but I have no desire to see a competition that excludes the best skaters from participating because of politics.
Maybe she could threaten someone in Russia, but she can’t do that in US. 😄 We support you 🥰
