The dynamic of the relationship between the sailors here is so troubling. This was a boy who had been through so much already, with being orphaned and then fostered. He was young in an age when the young were cowed into submission by their elders. The older sailors decided that their lives were worth more and that this boy was disposable. And his response: "what? Me sir?" seems so tragically respectful of these murderers. He was probably dying anyway, and they could have got what they needed without doing this. But they betrayed this poor boy. What a terrible story

Dear, oh dear, oh dear. What a sad and sorry tale. As you spoke several other issues attempted to clarify in my thinking about legal procedures and how they can appear so long-winded and counter-productive that the initial anger and frustration generated to bring these events in front of the "law' in the hope of finding justice seldom brings anything tangible. The Hillsborough Disaster, Post Office Scandals and the Lucy Letby cases in particular spring to mind. We can but hope that somehow the poor folk who have struggled through being faced with what must seem like the whole system playing Devil's Advocate against them can manage to make things better in the future for others - not that there's much comfort to be gained from that though I am sure. Thank you for these sobering thoughts. ❤

Brilliantly analyzed. As always. Every State in the US has a statute codifying the defense of necessity. The statutes tend to anticipate trespassing more than literal cannibalism.
Aon had a tremendous disparity in bonus money between revenue credit and resource credit. A resource credit unit might have occasionally cast on eye on a plump accounting technician during bonus season. I'm not sure anyone was carved up, but there were intense discussions.
I am proud of Aon for having almost certainly rejected cannibalism.
    Wonderful episode. Thank you..

Many thanks again Robert - trespassing is a great example of necessity. It is hard to find an example in English law - I initially included a paragraph about speeding in a medical emergency, on the assumption that such a minor infraction of the traffic laws would be excused by necessity...but it seems people are still taken to court for speeding to a medical emergency, and had to remove it! Very amusing application to a financial institution!

My sympathies are with the young cabin boy but by the same token the actions of Dudley and Stephens are also quite understandable. Survival of the fittest and all that. Would they have survived those four additional days till rescue without the death of Parker, who, by accounts was nearing the end anyway. A conundrum to be sure. Great story as always Mr Maguire.

Fascinating! I've heard of/read this story before but never discussed and explored so intelligently and with such legal and moral depth. Poor Richard Parker - he clearly thought that they had drawn straws and he was the unlucky one, when of course they'd done nothing of the kind. Dudley was a monster. In these circumstances, I always think "why do they have to kill somebody? why not just amputate an arm/leg and share that out (after drawing straws) and then the remaining 3 draw the next lot of straws etc, so that they have a chance of all surviving, even if they have lost a limb or two?" Thanks very much, I really enjoyed (not sure if that's the right word!) this one, because the moral discussion was so interesting. xx

Cutting off an arm or leg would have resulted in death in those circumstances.

@@janetpendlebury6808 Perhaps. I guess it wouldn't have been satisfactory to the others because they wanted his blood - they "thirsted" for it. Which is why they killed him by a knife to the jugular then ex-sanguinated him. Gruesome. Poor Richard.

Thank you very much, Mel - not sure I like the idea of cutting off an arm or a leg any better! So many issues in this case - you know how fussy I am about my food - and I wonder how the men managed to eat meat again...

Dear Sir, I am glad to hear that your studio audience disapproves of the last skit as strongly as I. As a naval officer I abhor the implication that the Royal Navy is a haven for cannibalism. It is well known that we have the problem relatively under control, and that it is the RAF who now suffer the largest casualties in this area. And what do you think the Argylls ate in Aden. Arabs? Yours etc. Captain B.J. Smethwick in a white wine sauce with shallots, mushrooms and garlic.

Brings to mind the Issei Sagawa and Armin Meiwes cases of murder and cannibalism and being a voluntary victim.

Why did they confess to the murder? They could have pushed the body overboard before the rescuers arrived and said he died naturally. They must have been confident that they would not be charged with murder but 'the custom of the sea' would prevail. Surprising that Parker's brother shook hands with them, even though he was after money.

Oh wow, Richard Parker has a memorial at Peartree church in Woolston Southampton a short distance from where I live atm. I lived in woolston as a child a knew the church well, as part of a Annexe of the school I attended, so have seen the memorial. Always a tale that intrigued me. We have quite a bit of maritime history here including the Titanic museum! Double wow, new book too!

    • @TheyGotAwayWithMurder
      @TheyGotAwayWithMurder  2 дня назад

Thank you, Susie - yes, I believe the original memorial stone (which I show at the end of the video) is now placed in the church itself, and a new memorial stone is outside which features the same inscription.

I know a fascinating story. "Milton Terra Verdi". There's a book with his notes after him and his brother-in-law got lost in a jungle after their plain fell. Real story. I've never complained about anything in life after reading his diary.
There's a book called "Diary of Death." I read it when I was a teen.
