- Bundala National Park can be introduced as a sensitive wetland park located in the arid zone on the Hambantota and Kiridi Oya border in the southeastern region of Sri Lanka. Spread over an area of 6216 hectares, the park was declared a sanctuary by the Department of Wildlife Conservation in December 1969.
The park's main zones can be identified as the coastal belt, the area with sand dunes, the lagoon and plain area, and the inner coastal zone.
As it is located in a coastal area, this area is constantly windy. In particular, the vegetation here is mainly composed of plants adapted to withstand the arid zone.
As well as palu, gansuriya, buruta, divul, etc. kasthiya plants. A visitor can see Neeramullia, Mudumahana, Maduruthala, Helamal etc. as plants. However, the dominant plant group that can be seen in the forest garden is the shrub plants.
Bundala is popular among tourists as a bird paradise. More than 20000 birds can be observed constantly in this territory where almost all the resident aquatic birds of Sri Lanka can be seen. According to the research done here, 53 species of birds have been recorded. Among these, around 50 species of migratory birds can be seen. 08 of them are rare. Also, the internationally endangered Pashtuwa and Dam Silutu de Tudua can also be seen.
Although it is famous for birds, Bundala is also a rich park in terms of other animals. Although there are no carnivores such as tigers and bea, about 30 elephants, the largest land-dwelling animal, live in the park. Apart from that, about 10 species of reptiles belonging to 06 genera have been recorded, including leopard, ox, bear and the largest land-dwelling reptile, the crocodile. Also, 03 species of turtles that live in Sri Lanka can be seen on this beach.
The museum located right next to the park entrance is a haven for a visitor to get information about the park. What you are seeing here is the video made in relation to the Bundala National Park.
