Ryan Trahan I agree. Whether someone decides to pursue a college athletic career or not it's good to see each side of the picture.

hey man you're a smart guy and I think you'll succeed in whatever you put your mind to...you are obviously APPLYING yourself and passionate about several things already (and that will only increase as you get older). I almost feel fortunate that youtube wasn't so big when I was in college( at least VLOGGing wasn't!), but that is the difference 10 years makes. We're both Millennials but I'm on the older side and you're on the younger side...the times are always a changin' so me must always adapt . Keep up the great work!

We're on the same wavelength. This was a nice contrast to all the videos about negative experiences within the NCAA. While everyone will experience negative things within being a collegiate student athlete, the overall experience will be so much more positive than negative if you apply yourself and make the most out of it.

Hey thanks Ben. There are just so many things one can do on a college campus environment. There are a lot of resources to explore and learn from! For me running was a major outlet...I've been crazy obsessed about the sport ever since I was 12 though. Anyway, keep up the solid work and best of luck with everything!

I find this funny, because I had the opposite experience as a lot of the young runners that are quitting during or after their freshman year. Going into college, I was only getting recruited by a couple of D-III schools. I really was only interested in one of the schools, but they didn't have my major (accounting). I ended up going to another school (which was D-1) and decided to train on my own to attempt to qualify for Boston, as there wasn't a run club at my school. I ended up missing qualifying for Boston by 43 seconds my freshman year and was going to try again my sophomore year. Right before my sophomore year started, I ran into the cross country team at a local park where they had just finished their long run. I knew a lot of the guys on the team and started to talk with one of them. One of the coaches asked how far I went and I said that I was early in the middle of a 16 mile run. The assistant coach took notice and sent me an email later that day asking if I wanted to discuss potentially joining the team, as the guys team was low on numbers. I decided to join, even though I was slower than some of the women on the team. My coaches even had me do some workouts with the women, which I didn't mind because it gave me some awesome training partners. I ended up running for the team for my final 3 years of college and enjoyed every minute of it. Even during my sophomore year when I was frustrated that I wasn't running as fast as I thought I should have been. The experience was completely worth it and I couldn't be more thankful for my friends on the team, who probably talked me up as a better runner than what I was, and for my coaches for the opportunity.

Bro that's the same thing I'm doing. Never got recruited or anything but trained over the summer for a 5k trial at a D1 school and the coaches were surprised how fast I was and keeping up with the guys already on the team. Now I'm on the team and all the summer training paid off!

Nice video just stumbled across it. I ran D1 for 2 years in the mid 90s. It was both easier and harder than it is today. Easier because there is so much more knowledge available. Harder because it is so much more competitive than it was then and there are more distractions. We didn't even have internet until sophomore year! I enjoyed listening to the perspective you gave. I quit because my body could not take the huge amount of overtraining I did ... muscle and joint injuries and unhealthy due to training too hard combined with sleeping too little and eating crap. Any HS kids reading this my advice is stay within yourself so that you stay healthy and enjoy the team aspect as well as all the time you have at that age...if not studying or running develop another hobby and enjoy it!

Absolutely loved this video Sage. As someone who is currently living the student-athlete life I know there are pros and cons, but
for most of us, there is no other time in your life where you can live, train, and dedicate your life like this to the sport and a team. Thank you so much for making this.

Drew Braden I understand where you are coming from but you don’t know what they’re going through and what it’s like to run in college. The guys like ryan trahan, and his roommates lived and breathed running in high school, just like you do now i assume. so you never know what they’re going through until you walk a mile in their shoes

First of all, because I'm approximately twice as old as you, I include you in the whipper snapper category. As a new runner I look forward to your training talks and search the archives for advice on issues that are helpful for my season. Even though this video was not relevant for me I found it captivating and worthy of my first ever comment. My daughter was a UPenn so your reflections on your college experience were so familiar to what she experienced. So many of us wish we could have a do over for a portion of our college years. I just want to conclude by saying I find your videos valuable, sometimes inspirational, always entertaining.

Sage, I've been following your videos for years. I am a Freshman in college and have really run into some roadblocks. I have always loved running, but I've actually contemplated on quitting lately due to my struggles in college. That being said, thank you so much for this video! It made me think of my teammates that I love, and all the joy that running has brought me in the past. I'll stick with it through this tough time, better roads ahead!

THANK YOU SAGE!!! So glad you posted your perspective on this as an alternative to the rash of videos from the guys quitting in their freshman year. Hopefully, they don’t regret their decisions in 2 years. Maybe they will even watch this and reconsider. I know my 15 year old will be watching it. Keep up the great work!

I would add, look for programs where the upper classmen are the top 7. That shows good aerobic development for distance runners. Don't go to a school where most of the top 7 is freshmen and sophomores. Division doesn't matter nuch

they pop up in my feed all the time (same with Emma Abrahamson and other college-age runners who make youtube videos). I generally do ultra running talks for people that are my age and older (ultra running has more people who aren't in their 20s), but I also can kind of relate to the young whippersnappers too....esp what it's like to be a student-athlete and to run track/xc. I'm still a Millennial.

Hey Sage, I just got accepted to be a hoka ambassador for the upcoming season today! Thought id let you know as im pretty sure i first heard of hoka from this channel. Any thoughts on which of the new models to go for ? Im racing mostly road half/full marathons and long course triathlon. The cavu / mach / clayton all look good. I like the huaka and tracer for roads right now but would be interested on your thoughts ?

Hoka Huaka is not made in USA anymore. Think it has been two years out of production for the USA. I had liked it too, but only had one pair. Did a few trail runs with it too, one 50 miler ultra marathon.

    • @lewisdonovan5375

Tuesdays Runner have you run in the new shoes at all ? cavu ? mach ?

    • @tuesdaysrunner4038
      @tuesdaysrunner4038 6 лет назад

Have not found a Hoka shoe that has the same springy cushioning that the Huaka had. But I have not tried many other Hoka shoes because of the price. Yes, I have tried the Clayton and the Infinite. And have thought about trying some others. Maybe the more snappy ones like you mention. When they go on sale? The Clayton and Infinite are stiffer cushioning, a more hard ride. The Infinite rubbed my arch in a bad blistering way so I cut the insole and tapered it in the arch. Meaning I cut out the arch to flaten it more. But I've only done a few runs with each shoe as I rotate shoes. I never had the "running on clouds" sensation from Hoka...but they changed the cushioning that they used. To be less of a marshmellow.
