Things you should know: 1: this was performed live and done in a single take…only took 4 tries. A bunch of his newer videos are like this, including Jenny and Screech 2: Ren has been very sick for a long time. He was bitten by a tick and contracted Lyme disease. He was misdiagnosed for many years and treated for mental disorders instead of the actual disease he had. The combination of the psychiatric drugs he took and years of untreated Lyme disease left him in a state where he would spend 23 hours a day in bed. He was finally properly diagnosed with Lyme disease and got stem cell treatments that made him feel better, but he is still quite ill. He wrote this song, Sick Boi, and a few others that haven’t come out yet, but is currently in Canada receiving intensive daily treatments so he can’t fully enjoy the success he is finally getting…though he has been watching reaction videos and commenting on them, so don’t be shocked if he drops by. 3: He got his start busking in London and Brighton, is talented in just about every facet of making music, and was signed by Sony right before he got sick. He was unable to produce music so Sony dropped him. 4: he collaborates with lots of other cool artists…you’ll enjoy his collaborations with Chinchilla. He also has a band called The Big Push 5: Go and read his community page…it’s worth it 6: welcome aboard…like another commenter said before me, I can never see this for the first time again, so I watch reaction videos so that I can see other people have that experience…it’s magical SUBSCRIBED!
Samuel Perry-Falvey who filmed Hi Ren, clarifies how they did it in the comments of Jonathan Hiller's reaction to the song. Not a one-take video like many other Ren tracks but vocals were recorded live.
@@jeffwilson3205 Yep, the close-ups were filmed separately. Hi Ren also differs from the Jenny/Screech/Violet videos in that it has shot changes whereas the trilogy videos are single-shot.
Why bother? They'll just laugh and joke through it, grinning like idiots the entire time. Maybe they'll make a few more Cillian Murphy comparisons. As for your suggestion, they'd need some kind of human depth and compassion to enjoy that.
Not a fan of rap never have been. However since watching this weeks ago I am addicted to his work. Enjoying music for the first time in years. His range is crazy good.
I think that I know why people say "I usually don't like rap but I like this". This is because Ren is not only a rapper (he did upload some rap clips) but he's also a spoke word poet or a slam poet. This video for me is more a music slam performance than a rap song. However rap is such a wide and diverse style that I would take a step back and study this music variety before claiming that I am not a fan of rap. I mean I do like a lot of rap artists, but I wouldn't stay that I'm a fan of anything nor that I dislike a style because artistry can be delivered in so many ways that there are always a few artists from each genre that I appreciate. Actually on my Spotify playlist I usually don't care about music style but I listen to a variety of artists such as System of a Down, Harry Mack, Little Simz, Ren, Rammstein, Linkin Park, The Ex, Aurora, Bonobo, Portico Quartet, etc. I don't really care about the genre as long as the artist is good at his craft and is delivering something that I like listening to.
I feel like the term “rap” has a bit of a bad… rap, sorry I had too. But I feel a poet is much more fitting on him for sure! Thank you all for the comments and views!
Same here, i really dislike rap normally. (metal head at heart) But this ain't just music, it is art on a whole new level. To me it is beyond only music. This is art in it's most authentic form to me. Talent, Raw and Real. Storytelling on the highest level.
This piece has so many layers. A humorous layer. A clever layer. A raw layer. A philosophical layer. A tragic layer. A layer that makes so many people feel like they connect to their own pain, other's pain. You guys were so much in your head, you had very limited emotional connection to a profoundly emotional piece. The way you smiled through it, was very strange to watch.
Then again, that is what makes a great piece of art, the ability to create almost an infinite number of different reactions. The ability to give different things to different people. There is no right or wrong way to enjoy art.
You’re not wrong, we took a chance on a new song that we wanted to do a completely blind reaction on so in turn we didn’t know his story or his situation. We feel this was a bad move on our part for this song because of the gravity behind it. We’ve listened to it a bunch of times since this reaction and have since changed our tunes. Because of our ignorance with this we reacted to it at face value. We usually don’t react to something with so much depth we weren’t prepared mentally and again not knowing his story, we paid more attention to the melody and his actions, which caused us to smile and bob our heads(mainly to when he started to bob his head) we meant no disrespect or to insult him. We’re not very happy with how this turned out especially after finding out what this was actually about. Thank you for being nice about this and hope you give us another shot. Cheers!
@@jordanamandareact I'm not judging, just giving you something to think about. I watched over 50 reactions to that video. I found this interesting phenomenon-there were a few reactors who did a great job analyzing it from a particilar perspective, but it was like they were analyzing a basketball game. Most people reacted to this with significant emotion. I have seen people cry, many sayiing they get goosbumps, be profoundly moved, etc. You see emotion coming through on every level. Just pointing it out for self-awareness. Not sure what it says, but it says something. I found it a little unnerving, but that is just me. My guess is other people may feel similar, and I would want that type of feedback if I were in your shoes.
He definitely has a dark sense of humor and his use of double meanings can elicit some slightly uncomfortable laughing in between jaw dropping emotional gut punches.
@@TheBigburcie It is a very deep emotional piece that is only entertaining becuse of his theatrics, writing, levity, musical genius, and yes, a very dark sense of humor. It is pure authenticity. As someone who went through something similar as him, you get a very dark sense of humor. It astounds me when people can just look at this piece emotionally detached and only see it through whatever discipline they see it through. It is very uncommon, but it is striking when I see it. The worst one was actually a therapist. It scared the shit out of me for his clients. (Another psychology professor started a course around it.) I have watched 1almost 10f reactiions from all different perspectives and it was such a wonderful exercise in humility. So many people from random backgrounds (Musicians, neurobiologist, rappers, composers, metal heads, rednecks, performance coaches, people with the same disease, etc) and so many people saw things and noticed things that I didn't. The power of perspective. If you think about how many views he got so quickly, then add the number of views everyone who is reacing creates, and the conversations it is starting, This isn't a song. It is becoming a movement.
Don’t worry about being corny or heartfelt in what you share in a reaction- that’s what makes it real and helps connect, like this amazing performance that has connected so many souls. 🤘🏼🎧🤟🏼
Nice reaction both. The Ren rabbit hole is deep and varied and defies all attempts at defining any kind of genre. I hope you check out some more. It is definitely worth the time
Great reaction, Ren is currently in Canada receiving treatment for Lyme Disease that he has had for years and was misdiagnosed for years, he spent years suffering and in pain while doctors were telling him it was all in his head, hopefully with treatment he'll make a full recovery.
Don't try and work out what he is. Because the next thing you see will make you realise you were wrong. Singing, rapping, story telling, musician, Solo in duets or with The Big Push the band he was with doing their twist on some classic covers. Whichever way he decides to go sit back listen and enjoy his unique talents.
Great reaction! You are definitely going to want to check out Chalk Outlines with Chinchilla (live). Hauntingly beautiful with full vocal talent on display. You will be speechless. I think everyone here will agree. Be well and keep being you!
Thank you so much for the kind words, we’re disappointed with this reaction only because we didn’t know about his story and situation in turn we didn’t know the gravity of this song so we had more of happier take on his performance mean while he was pouring his heart out. A reaction is a reaction but I feel this was a little inappropriate. Thank you so much for the suggestions and your view! Cheers
That was a fun " Hi Ren" Roller-coaster reaction to take with you both! I reckon if you try a trilogy of tragic tales Ren does titled "Jenny and Screech's tale ( which ends with Violet's tale) you can find all 3 together on one video that Ren released. A heads up though he takes you into the stories with him and they are violent in nature, but how he does it so medieval Bard like in one take walking through alleyways of Brighton, England at night, just him and his guitar is absolutely stunning.
First I wondered what was going on. Then I realized he was describing me and so many who suffer. After 40 years in the ministry, I hit a walI and couldn’t function. I had to retire. A psychiatric crisis… I was diagnosed with Bipolar and CPTSD actually. Ren’s song ends with hope. I’ve listened to it at least 50 times. It was a long trip getting to the “hope” part.
Everything he's done, whether like this or more light-hearted is great, I've seen some good stuff from people and have been disappointed with their catalogue when I've gone for a deeper dive. Not so with Ren, incredible versatility with all the styles you can think of and it's all fantastic.
He also has lots of fun stuff and he's an amazing singer and proficient on pretty much any instrument he feels like bringing alive. Piano, guitar, bass...ect also beat boxes and raps up there with the best of them. Not just rapping fast with words that rhyme. there's tons of thought put into every word he spits out.. No mumbling stumbling , senseless sentences
If you're not a fan of rap, you might wanna check out his song Chalk Outlines w/Chinchilla (live version), his song How To Be Me w/Chinchilla, his song Humble, and maybe some of his cover songs with his band The Big Push (I Shot The Sheriff/Road To Zion & Trouble No More/Nina Simone cover). You might enjoy those as well. Thanks for the great vid! Loved your reaction 🥰🙏❤
Thank you so much for the kind words! We’ve been getting a lot of bad reviews over this, and rightly so but I think they missed that we had no idea about his story and the gravity of this song. We’re not very happy with this reaction but I’m glad you liked it and thank you for the suggestions! Cheers
Writes his own lyrics, plays multiple instruments and is close to a virtuoso with a guitar, makes his own beats, sings, raps with the best of them (NOT hyperbole), beat boxes, shoots his own videos, many in a single take (like this one was), and he's an incredible story-teller on top of it all. He's special. Truly. Listen to " The Tale of Jenny & Screech", it's 3 songs that create a story and you need to find the FULL version to get all 3 in the proper order....I promise, your jaws will drop. For something more upbeat and fun, listen to "Power" and "What you want". They'll both make you smile. Welcome to the Ren rabbit-hole! It's a fun ride.
When 2 people, together, react to this, it's bobbing heads and smiles. The smiles fade as you allow yourself to react on your own. I'd love to see you two do this again individually.
That’s actually not a bad idea, but maybe not a full on reaction since we have listened to this so many times since, but maybe we each do our individual thoughts on it. Thanks so much for the suggestion!
Watched your reaction video because I’m doing the “hi Ren” reaction video rounds, should say I’m completely obsessed. Ren’s “hi Ren” is an art piece for the ages.
Here is some information on Ren's story, in case you didn't already know. I gathered it from old newspaper interviews, articles, and Ren's livestreams and posts where he discussed his condition. Ren Eryn Gill is a British musician/independent artist; born in Wales on March 29, 1990, he grew up in Brighton. Ren pursued a career in music from an early age. In 2009, while studying music performance at Bath Spa University, he began to experience health issues and was struggling to attend his lectures. In 2010, he was signed by Sony Records and was working on an album when his health deteriorated to the point where he was unable to continue and subsequently dropped by Sony. Ren's illness often kept him in bed for up to 23 hours daily. Ren was initially misdiagnosed with depression, bipolar disorder, and chronic fatigue syndrome, which led him to experience psychosis. It would take seven years before a doctor in Belgium finally correctly diagnosed Ren with autoimmunity, Lyme disease, and resulting damage to the brain, organs, joints, and PTSD. Ren eventually underwent stem cell therapy in the United States, which improved his health, but it has not been a cure. Ren is currently in Canada for more treatments, including surgeries, and will have to be there for at least six months (Summer of 2023). Ren’s Canadian doctor discovered that Ren also developed a condition called Mast Cell Activation Disorder, which has affected the myelin sheath in his brain, his thyroid, adrenals, as well as his bones/joints. Ren stated: "It's a lot to wrap my head around having to be away from friends, family, and a successful career, and almost feels like a total juxtaposition to the fact that my music is blowing up right now and spreading to all corners of the world, but that's life, we take the good with the bad." Ren’s recent wisdom tooth removal went well, but he is currently battling an infection following cavitation surgery, and he is not feeling well. Let's keep supporting Ren as he undergoes his treatments. Check out and subscribe to his channel, listen to some of his earlier work, like and comment on his performances, and let's lift Ren's spirits. If you are a believer, pray for him. Ren is an artist with something to say to this generation, and his work is needed in these troubling times. I enjoy watching people's faces when they're experiencing Ren for the first time. It took me several, SEVERAL times watching this performance to really grasp every word. Now that I can sing alongside his delivery, I'm continue to be further impressed with this young man's talent. Welcome to the Ren rabbit hole.
“Hi Ren" is the song that put Ren on everyone's radar since December; it went viral and has garnered more than 6 million views since its debut, but he has been creating great music for more than ten years. Ren’s music videos are generally recorded live, often in a single take, although not necessarily the first take, and from various camera angles. His release, "Sick Boi," is almost another chapter to "Hi Ren." Many of Ren’s songs resonate with people because he addresses struggles that many others face every day. Ren plays multiple instruments (acoustic, electric, and bass guitar, piano, drums), has impressive vocals, is an excellent storyteller, and is quite the philosopher and poet. He is considered by many a modern bard; he calls his music “bardcore.” Ren’s earliest recordings on RUclips are from his time in a band called “Trick The Fox,” consisting of Ren and his buddies Charlie and Tommy. Unfortunately, the band performed only briefly due to Ren’s onset of health issues. They are very talented. A fun clip to watch is “The Mash Up.” Ren’s trilogy "The Tale of Jenny/Screech/Violet" has been likened to a Shakespearean tragedy and is a prime example of his genius; it is a master’s class in storytelling and also showcases his guitar skills. The three acts are haunting, and the conclusion will catch you off guard. The trilogy needs to be watched in the order given, as this is the flow of the storyline and is best watched as a whole rather than piecemeal. Ren’s collaborations with Chinchilla (“Chalk Outlines,” “How to Be Me,” “Sexual Healing,” “One Dance/Drunk in Love”) are beautiful and showcase his singing voice. His live music videos are especially impressive. Ren's personal reflections are threaded through many of his songs; "Insomnia," "Depression," “Diazepam," “Penitence,” “Dear God,” “Heretic,” “Dominos,” his "Freckled Angels" album, just to name a few, all deserve a listen. His song "Money Game" (Part I & II) is another recommendation, although it is less of a personal song than it is an indictment of greed and the resulting injustices in this world. Ren’s Hip Hop/Rap style songs are all worth checking out if you enjoy this genre; they are pretty amazing. Check out “The Hunger,” “Genesis,” “What You Want,” “Losing it (FISHER rap retake),” “Right here, right now (Fatboy Slim one shot retake),” "Life is Funny," “Love Music (Parts 1, 2, and 3),” “Crucify Your Culture,” “Power,” and his latest release, “Bittersweet symphony (The Verve retake).” As I recently discovered, Ren also recorded a cover of “Can't Help Falling In Love (Elvis Cover),” that is simply beautiful. Then there are his performances with Sam Tompkins (“Blind Eyed,” “Earned it /Mans World / Falling,” “Walking on the moon/No Diggity”), Eden Nash (“Humble,” “Ocean”), Bibi (“Crutch,” “Ahiahiaoha”), Molly McKinna (“Penitence”), his former bandmate, Romain Axisa (“French Song”), which are all great. "The Big Push" busking sessions, concerts, and live recordings all are awesome and well worth checking out. Their covers of "I Shot the Sheriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop," "Wade in the Water/Nina Simone/Trouble so Hard," "An Englishman in New York," “Bongo Bong,” “War Pigs,” the songs "Oh My Woman," “Swan Song,” “Sweet Little Lady," "It's Alright," "Watch Out," “Dignity,” and so many others are equally impressive. In anticipation of his stay in Canada for more treatments, Ren prepared some music ahead of time to be released over the next six months that he expects to be gone. He released “Sick Boi” and “Bittersweet Symphony (The Verve retake),” which is another masterful work. Ren has hinted that he might release his newest song on March 29, which is his birthday.
"I've seen a handful of reactors doing this" Heh.... It seems like by now this is one of the most reacted-to videos out there! But hey if you want a good sampling of non-rap stuff, check out some of the work he did with the band The Big Push. It's all live, most of what they did were street performances. The chemistry of that group is incredible, and they hit a wide variety of genres from rock to reggae to soul in addition to their original material. You are probably going to get a lot of requests for the Jenny & Screech trilogy, I'd personally recommend holding off on that one, it's amazing but is very much a punch in the gut.
Take the rabbit hole. Start with chalk outlines, crutch, how to be me, humble, genesis, hunger, a good story time is Jenny and screech. Enjoy the rabbit hole his live stuff is good too.

A start on The Reniverse: Modern bard: Hi Ren Tale of Jenny & Schreech(full) Rap: The hunger Genesis Rap retakes: Bittersweet symphony Losing it Ren X: Chalk outlines ft Chinchilla How to be me ft Chinchilla Cruch ft Chinchilla Ren & the big push: Bongo bong I shot the sheriff / Zion / Hip-hop
Ren calls his style Bardcore... he is a street busker and his music often takes on a minstrel style of story telling. He did this in one take. Apparently he had to do it a few times to get that take... but it was all in one. (and with a budget of about $1000). He has some video's that are more musical (singing) and some that are more rap. He suffered years of debilitating illness because of a misdiagnosis and incorrect medication. I think it gave him a perspective that makes his music more... just more .. he really is a genius.
Ren is quite unique, some of the songs have very strong messages and must be listened to in order for you to follow the storylines which are so important. As others said Jenny and Screech (full version) is worth watching but must be done in order to appreciate it. And yes it was like many of his things are recorded live in one take.

Ren has the clearest lyrics I've ever heard from an artist especially with the speed and accuracy of his rapping, he is such a talented man. I love all of it
Before you get into any of Ren's rap/hip-hop, you must react to the trilogy "The Tale of Jenny, Screech & Violet". It is a three part performance that must be played all at once in a single reaction and in order. First Jenny, then Screech, finally Violet. It is often called the FULL performance. Some reactors have played them as separate reactions or out of order and they have been crucified. Just saying so that it goes well for you. Enjoyed your reaction. Just subbed.
'Killian' Murphy, not Sillian. Ren does allsorts. He is a modern day bard, he uses the term 'Bardcore' for what he does. His band The Big Push are well worth a watch
Great reaction! I don't think of this as a song, but more as an amazing piece of performance art! Check his channel to learn what he has gone through and is still going through in his life.
I am a 62 year old English man. I have been a singer songwriter since I was a young, rebellious teenager. Ren is THE most creative musician / singer songwriter i have ever heard. I was also introduced to his music via this Hi Ren track and I was blown away. There is so much going on with his craftsmanship. You MUST watch The Tale Of Jenny And Screech ( FULL VERSION ) It is, by far, THE most brilliant trilogy I have ever heard. I don't like to brandish the word Genius around too lightly BUT I am more than comfortable to use this adjective where Ren is concerned. 🙏
This is the most important piece of art to come out in a long time. For those of us that struggle with severe mental illness, this video is a visceral experience. Also, just so you know, Ren just reached number 1 song in the UK as a solo artist producing his own music.
I love how everyone has a different reaction to Ren some laugh and some cry. But I didn't find humor in it myself. This was a song about his struggle. Some nod their heads but I never thought this was a song or performance to nod your head to. It's not even a song. I think maybe you missed the point. Listen again. I'm giving you a thumbs up anyway because you listened to Ren.
This was a blind reaction to an artist that we knew nothing about, and it showed in our reaction . We didn’t grasp the words and message until towards the end when. At first we thought that this was mocking an old song we knew, but boy were we wrong. I have listened to this song several times since then solely focusing on the lyrics and man did they tear me up . Ren is a beautiful tortured soul, struggling through physical and mental health problems, but I can see he has so much fight in him .

@Jordan & Amanda React a bit about Ren he was misdiagnosed with mental disorders, autoimmune disease, and psychosis dual personality disorder, for over 10 years, he was finally correctly diagnosed with Lymes disease he was bitten by a tick and it has ravaged his body and mind, he is currently in Canada getting treatment for at least the next 6 months. its all on his page in the description and on his community page. he has also set up a gofund me for people that wanted to donate for his medical bills and until then he is working on music and will be putting out something 1 time a month or something like that correct me if I am wrong, but that is a bit about his back story. he has a lot of stuff you might like Sick Boi which is the follow up to this song hi ren, The Tale of Jenny and Screech (Full version ) including Violets Tale, Ren X Chinchila Chalk Outlines, Power, Losing It (Fischer Retake), Hunger, and busking on the streets I shot the sherrif and many many others.
He has NO genre, he sings reggae, he sings rock, he raps, he puts poetry and spoken word to music, many are calling him the BARD of Breighton. Chalk Outlines Ren + Chinchilla does show off his singing voice, The trilogy Jenny, Screech and Violets tale is Bard style, he also has many many live street "concerts" with the band The Big Push which are amazing.
Behold, the power of Hi Ren. It reaches deep into the soul and brings the haughty ones back down to Earth. Next up, you should check his performance of “Chalk Outlines” so you can get a real feel for his vocal range and then follow it up with his cover of “I Shot the Sheriff” where he channels the spirit of the late, great Bob Marley. Please do more Ren reactions. Peace!😊❤
I enjoy seeing youtubers getting their minds blown with musical art. I have watched and listened to a couple hundred HI REN reactions and look for new youtubers, to me,and you got a new subscriber in me. Keep doing what ya doin. KEEP MOVING FORWARD. 🤜🤛 SHARING IS CARING 1 more subscriber for your channel ,towards 100k😁 Ren's music is the word that is like the song needed for peace in BILL AND TEDS movie, from WYLD STALLIONS.
I will be honest with you. You got my back up from the get go because you sounded like people who just wanted to boost your own ratings by jumping on a bandwagon, not a good look. BUT as time went on I could really see the emotional impact on Amanda. Ren is an incredible artist, please check out his other stuff. I recommend Chalk Outlines with Chinchilla as a first step
lol the emotional confusion on amanda's face throughout this as shes trying to remain upbeat and smile through the very deep parts trying not to break character was great.
It's poetry, performance art, storytelling and music all in one. It's a genius piece of art and i highly suggest listening to it again in solitude without any distractions. There is listening with half an ear and then there is Listening with all your focus. Really pay attention to every little detail of the video and lyrics. Everyone always miss a lot of subtle nuances the first time.
I almost watched your Reaction to Ren X Chinchilla Chalk Outlines then you mentioned you did a Blind Reaction to Hi Ren! Of course I have to check that out first! Thank you for Reacting!
People are talking a lot about peaky blinders too We forgive you cuz you got it! We call this a surprise reaction. I think you guys might like money games 1&2 He has an amazing range. Yes you need to listen again as you were talking during the beginning. He is very deep. Welcome in! Take the deep dive. You are important! Enjoy. 🦚🖖🏻🙏❤️🔥
I really didn't like Rap until Ren got me intrigued. You can hear his words and his music is so diverse. So much to check out. Samuel Perry-Falvey filmed it and it was four takes till they got it. Close up shots added. Check out The Big Push also, Ren's band and friends all talented.
As you will find out "beautiful soul" is a perceptive description. Regarding the video you are correct, filmed in one take, the guitar and vocal was also live. I look forward to following you journey. Not my words, but every apt @The only predictable thing about Ren is his unpredictability@.
Put in mind he is doing this independently, doesn't have a record label to promote his music, that's why the views aren't "hundreds of millions" he depends pretty much on street performance and on people sharing his music and so on Enjoy the Ren journey ❤
I will say that the video caught us off guard in the beginning of our reaction we laughed because it took time for us to grasp the seriousness of the message, at first I thought he was imitating an old Eminem ding , but if you noticed towards the end of the reaction our demeanour changed once we realized how soulful this was. After this reaction I listened to this song repeatedly and it tore me up. I’m sorry you didn’t like our reaction .this Artist was new to us we didn’t know what to expect
You’ll get hundreds of suggestions, so I might as well make one. Do ”How to be me” live with Chinchilla, if you want more of Rens lyricism and singing abilities, without giving away too much it’s about mental illness and Rens friend Joe who unfortunately left too soon.😢
Haha Canada isn’t much different, but I genuinely loved it there, even though my family left England several generations ago I was still raised with a lot of English life styles. Thanks for the comment!
Reaction to reaction video ..... oblivious! How can someone review music they cannot hear. This went so far over there heads that most of the performance was obscured by the dark clouds Ren lived beneath. Don't get me wrong this is in some way refreshing to witness, there are people are still out there untouched by the bitter lessons that harsh world can deliver, or wear the scars that life's struggles leaves that so many others deal with. Whether it's their beliefs or just polished social graces that have shielded them for the brutal reality ....... I don't know. It was interesting to watch them randomly bobbing to what they thought was confusing rhythm and strange melody with Ren's raw words whizzing past unnoticed. It reinforces to me that art, music, life is interpreted by differently by different people ...... judgement is not really fair, so what if they didn't get it.
Thank you for your comment! Your so right ! Ren is a beautiful tortured soul, but he has a lot of fight in him .
@@amandalynnmann5806 Thanks for your reply, I also re read my comment and it's plain to see that it was hastily written and maybe a little charged (apologies if any of that was offensive). I'm glad you have had a chance to listen to Hi Ren a few more times. this song, performance, message has so many layers and is confronting. I am not a huge fan of slam poetry, rap, hip hop or what ever someone might describe this as, but the power of the message, the purity of delivery and brilliance of his performance can not be denied, He has quite a diverse range, a lot have heavy content, an incredible talent, I would urge you to continue to explore his other work, cheers
Here's some info for you. The sound was recorded live, it took only 4 takes to get it. There were cuts in the video but only for the up close shots. The sound was all one take. He struggled with Lyme disease and it went undiagnosed for a long time to the point where it gave him bouts of psychosis. There was so much going on, the guitar style was softer from the "good side" and the dark sided was more hit harder. Even the lights flickered when it was the dark side of him, and the shadow cast on the floor had a double shadow one darker than the other. Check out his song called The Tale of Jenny & Screech (full) as it shows just how versatile he is but it is all about the delivery for him. He had a record deal with Sony, but when he got sick they dropped them and he has done it all without the backing of anyone! He is currently in Canada getting treatment for the lyme disease.
Thanks for the comment! A few people have been very helpful in letting us know his story and situation, very tragic and painful but sounds like he may be on the up again? I wonder if while in Canada he might do some pop up jams in pubs on the days he feels well enough, would be very wild to see. Cheers!
@@ChrisLawton66 Ren deserves every bit of success he is seeing. I have lost count on how many times I've listened to his music, and how many reactions I have watched as it is a beautiful dance from artists to audiences and they play off one another so beautifully! Ren himself often goes and watches these reactions (as many as he can) and has made some good friends from them. The same can be said for us just following his journey!
I want to start by saying I loved this reaction. I am a big fan of Ren. This video, to me, was life changing. I have watched so many reactions to this video and have noticed that they are not truly first reactions. I can understand why you had negative reactions to this video, but people need to understand that if this is truly the first time you have listened to it, you have to understand were it is coming from. Ren is not mainstream, and his music can be very deep. You watched for the first time and gave an honest opinion. Your opinion may not be the same as mine or there's, and to me, that's ok.
That is one beautiful soul you have there 🔥🔥🔥 it’s funny that that was the artist and video we chose to do a genuine first reaction to, no research and didn’t even know what kind of genre of music he played and it just happen to be one of the heaviest songs of the year lol thank you for seeing it for what it was, I still listen to that song today and still can’t believe how good it is and how talented he is despite that hardship he’s had to endure.
Things you should know:
1: this was performed live and done in a single take…only took 4 tries. A bunch of his newer videos are like this, including Jenny and Screech
2: Ren has been very sick for a long time.
He also has a band called The Big Push
5: Go and read his community page…it’s worth it
6: welcome aboard…like another commenter said before me, I can never see this for the first time again, so I watch reaction videos so that I can see other people have that experience…it’s magical
SUBSCRIBED!
Samuel Perry-Falvey who filmed Hi Ren, clarifies how they did it in the comments of Jonathan Hiller's reaction to the song. Not a one-take video like many other Ren tracks but vocals were recorded live.
@@hmo_mackey yeah…the audio is a one take…most of the video as well…other than some of the close-ups is what I gathered.
@@jeffwilson3205 Yep, the close-ups were filmed separately. Hi Ren also differs from the Jenny/Screech/Violet videos in that it has shot changes whereas the trilogy videos are single-shot.
The tale of Jenny, Screech & Violet (full version) is well worth watching - he'll take you on an emotional journey.
An absolute must!!
And here is the link for you ruclips.net/video/TYAnqQ--KX0/видео.html Dark, grim tale.....but absolute creative masterpiece!!!
The Tale of Jenny & Screech Trilogy - Amazing storytelling. A modern day bard.
Why bother? They'll just laugh and joke through it, grinning like idiots the entire time. Maybe they'll make a few more Cillian Murphy comparisons. As for your suggestion, they'd need some kind of human depth and compassion to enjoy that.
@@Mr.Ekshin wanna dance with somebody?
Not a fan of rap never have been. However since watching this weeks ago I am addicted to his work.
Enjoying music for the first time in years. His range is crazy good.
I don't like rap either, but I love this. I can't stop listening to it.
stands for "rhythm and poetry"....Ren is a poet. If you think of it as poetry it overcomes your rap aversion....
(metal head at heart)
But this ain't just music, it is art on a whole new level.
(Another psychology professor started a course around it.)
I have watched 1almost 10f reactiions from all different perspectives and it was such a wonderful exercise in humility.
Love fans who introduce Ren with the world ❤❤
Beyond the beauty of his music, one of the most amazing things ive heard is that this video was recorded live!
He's a genius bard is what he is!
Great reaction! You are definitely going to want to check out Chalk Outlines with Chinchilla (live). Hauntingly beautiful with full vocal talent on display. You will be speechless. I think everyone here will agree. Be well and keep being you!
I agree😀
I also agree and also how to be me, live with Chinchilla.
X3 CHALK OUTLINES ren x chinchilla
Ren isn't defined by a genre. Ren is a poet a bard and a minstrel. And wants us to know something.
I hope you react to more of Ren, he is very talented and a very deep thinker who is able to make what he cares about universal to all of us.
Liked and subscribed 👍 Ren's definitely a genius. Each song is like watching a different artist and everything is totally unique. ✌❤💪
He also has a video on his RUclips channel from when he was streaming on Twitch where he talks about Hi Ren. It’s pretty moving.
Ren stated: "It's a lot to wrap my head around having to be away from friends, family, and a successful career, and almost feels like a total juxtaposition to the fact that my music is blowing up right now and spreading to all corners of the world, but that's life, we take the good with the bad."
Ren’s recent wisdom tooth removal went well, but he is currently battling an infection following cavitation surgery, and he is not feeling well.
Here is the link to Ren’s GoFundMe page to raise money for his current treatment. www.gofundme.com/f/ren-get-better-from-lyme-disease-and-autoimmunity
I have been listening to Ren for many weeks and I have yet to find a video that did not impress me. This is not rap, it's Bardcore. Ren changes lives.
A fun clip to watch is “The Mash Up.”
Ren’s trilogy "The Tale of Jenny/Screech/Violet" has been likened to a Shakespearean tragedy and is a prime example of his genius; it is a master’s class in storytelling and also showcases his guitar skills.
Check out “The Hunger,” “Genesis,” “What You Want,” “Losing it (FISHER rap retake),” “Right here, right now (Fatboy Slim one shot retake),” "Life is Funny," “Love Music (Parts 1, 2, and 3),” “Crucify Your Culture,” “Power,” and his latest release, “Bittersweet symphony (The Verve retake).”
As I recently discovered, Ren also recorded a cover of “Can't Help Falling In Love (Elvis Cover),” that is simply beautiful.
Reacting to this performance, there is no hiding, if you have an emotional reaction it's going to show.
Subbed. Ren x Chinchilla - chalk outlines (LIVE) for beautiful vocals
The Jenny, screech, violet tale trilogy for a Shakespearean tragedy story
"I've seen a handful of reactors doing this" Heh.... It seems like by now this is one of the most reacted-to videos out there! But hey if you want a good sampling of non-rap stuff, check out some of the work he did with the band The Big Push. It's all live, most of what they did were street performances. The chemistry of that group is incredible, and they hit a wide variety of genres from rock to reggae to soul in addition to their original material. You are probably going to get a lot of requests for the Jenny & Screech trilogy, I'd personally recommend holding off on that one, it's amazing but is very much a punch in the gut.
I’m not a fan of rap either. I’ve never listened to an entire rap song before, but this young man does so much more than rap. Very talented
Take the rabbit hole. Start with chalk outlines, crutch, how to be me, humble, genesis, hunger, a good story time is Jenny and screech. Enjoy the rabbit hole his live stuff is good too.
I look forward to watching your Ren journey! By the way our food isn’t bland 🤣🤣🤣🇬🇧👍

Ren does make music ❤❤
Ren calls his style Bardcore... he is a street busker and his music often takes on a minstrel style of story telling. He did this in one take. Apparently he had to do it a few times to get that take... but it was all in one. (and with a budget of about $1000). He has some video's that are more musical (singing) and some that are more rap. He suffered years of debilitating illness because of a misdiagnosis and incorrect medication. I think it gave him a perspective that makes his music more... just more .. he really is a genius.
No song has ever mind-fucked me like this. This transcends art.
Ren is quite unique, some of the songs have very strong messages and must be listened to in order for you to follow the storylines which are so important. As others said Jenny and Screech (full version) is worth watching but must be done in order to appreciate it. And yes it was like many of his things are recorded live in one take.
The following was collated by Jens Randolff so props to him for that.

In 2010, he was signed by Sony Records and was working on an album when his health deteriorated to the point where he was unable to continue and subsequently dropped by Sony. Ren's illness often kept him in bed for up to 23 hours daily. Ren was initially misdiagnosed with depression, bipolar disorder, and chronic fatigue syndrome, which lead him to experience psychosis. Ren's Canadian doctor discovered that Ren also developed a condition called Mast Cell Activation Disorder, which has affected the myelin sheath in his brain, his thyroid, adrenals, as well as his bones/joints. Ren stated: "It's a lot to wrap my head around having to be away from friends, family, and a successful career, and almost feels like a total juxtaposition to the fact that my music is blowing up right now and spreading to all corners of the world, but that's life, we take the good with the bad." Let's keep supporting Ren and not pull a "Sony" on him as he undergoes his treatment. Check out his channel, listen to some of his earlier work, like and comment on his performances, and let's lift Ren's spirits. If you are a believer, pray for him. Ren is an artist with something to say to this generation, and his work is needed in these troubling times. Here is the link to Ren’s GoFundMe page to raise money for his current treatment. www.gofundme.com/f/ren-get-better-from-lyme-disease-and-autoimmuni
Ren has the clearest lyrics I've ever heard from an artist especially with the speed and accuracy of his rapping, he is such a talented man. I love all of it
5k views in 11 hours? Sounds like it did the trick!! Haha. Congrats guys and great reaction.
I like her 80s hairdo. Vintage is always cool.
Watch his band The Big Push doing Heroes, David Bowie cover, great video as well 😁
Some songs are not meant to keep a smile and happy vibe through the whole reaction...we watch reactions for honesty
This is the most important piece of art to come out in a long time. For those of us that struggle with severe mental illness, this video is a visceral experience. Also, just so you know, Ren just reached number 1 song in the UK as a solo artist producing his own music.
I see there are many of my favorite artists that you haven't done. Here is one: Jinjer "Pisces" OMV live.
I highly recommend checking out Ren’s Crutch feat. Bibi. Absolutely stunning piece of raw emotion.
Imagine that I'm a metalhead and this song hit me straight in the heart and shook my foundations.
If you don't know what it's about while watching, how are you supposed to know the song as a message at the end. You are fine in my mind.
Ren is everything. check him out down the rabbit hole.
Discography--
Great reaction. "Hi Ren" is the song that put Ren on everyone's radar since December; it went viral and has garnered more than 6.6 million views since its debut, but he has been creating great music for more than ten years. Ren’s music videos are generally recorded live in a single take (although not necessarily the first take). His latest release, "Sick Boi," is almost another chapter to "Hi Ren." Many of his songs resonate with people because he addresses struggles that many others face every day. Ren plays multiple instruments (acoustic, electric, and bass guitar, piano, drums), has impressive vocals, is an excellent storyteller, and is quite the philosopher and poet. His trilogy "The Tale of Jenny/Screech/Violet" is haunting and has an unforeseen conclusion. It needs to be watched in the order given, as this is the flow of the storyline. It is another example of Ren’s genius and a master’s class in storytelling. It has been likened to a Shakespearean tragedy. Ren’s collaborations with Chinchilla (“Chalk Outlines,” “How to Be Me”) are beautiful and showcase his singing voice while addressing mental health. Ren’s Hip Hop/Rap style songs are also worth checking out; they are simply amazing. Check out “The Hunger,” “Genesis,” “What You Want,” “Losing it (FISHER rap retake),” “Right here, right now (Fatboy Slim one shot retake),” and his latest release, “Bittersweet symphony (The Verve retake).” His performances with Sam Tompkins (“Blind Eyed,” “Earned it /Mans World / Falling,” “Walking on the Moon), Eden Nash (“Humble,” “Ocean”), Bibi (“Crutch,” “Ahiahiaoha”), Molly McKinna (“Penitence”), his former bandmate, Romain Axisa (“French Song”) are all great. Ren's performances as a member of the band "The Big Push" (which unfortunately broke up), their busking (street performances), concerts, and their live recordings, are awesome and well worth checking out. Ren's covers of "I Shot the Sheriff," "Wade in the Water," "An Englishman in New York," the songs "Oh My Woman," “Swan Song,” and so many others are equally impressive and really give you a sample of his vocal ability. Ren recently released his single, “Sick Boi.” In anticipation of his stay in Canada for more treatments, Ren prepared some music ahead of time to be released over the next six months that he expects to be gone. "Sick Boi" is almost another chapter to "Hi Ren." As mentioned above, his latest release, “Bittersweet Symphony (The Verve retake),” is another masterful work
@Jordan & Amanda React a bit about Ren he was misdiagnosed with mental disorders, autoimmune disease, and psychosis dual personality disorder, for over 10 years, he was finally correctly diagnosed with Lymes disease he was bitten by a tick and it has ravaged his body and mind, he is currently in Canada getting treatment for at least the next 6 months. its all on his page in the description and on his community page. he has also set up a gofund me for people that wanted to donate for his medical bills and until then he is working on music and will be putting out something 1 time a month or something like that correct me if I am wrong, but that is a bit about his back story. he has a lot of stuff you might like Sick Boi which is the follow up to this song hi ren, The Tale of Jenny and Screech (Full version ) including Violets Tale, Ren X Chinchila Chalk Outlines, Power, Losing It (Fischer Retake), Hunger, and busking on the streets I shot the sherrif and many many others.
There is always a Winnered , One Human Soul is Worth a million Demented Soul
He has NO genre, he sings reggae, he sings rock, he raps, he puts poetry and spoken word to music, many are calling him the BARD of Breighton. Chalk Outlines Ren + Chinchilla does show off his singing voice, The trilogy Jenny, Screech and Violets tale is Bard style, he also has many many live street "concerts" with the band The Big Push which are amazing.
He’s probably got another 66 million views through reactions. This thing is huge.
Everyone should check out some of his performances with The Big Push....completely different energy.
He is amazing.
Great reaction.
Profound and prophetic. Ren is a sign of the human condition and those who live in denial.
Peace!😊❤
Double Dog Dare ya to.... React to his Jenny and Screech trilogy! Make sure it's the Full version!
Master Level guitar and Storytelling!!!
I enjoy seeing youtubers getting their minds blown with musical art.
I have watched and listened to a couple hundred HI REN reactions and look for new youtubers, to me,and you got a new subscriber in me.
Keep doing what ya doin.
KEEP MOVING FORWARD.
🤜🤛
SHARING IS CARING
1 more subscriber for your channel ,towards 100k😁
Ren's music is the word that is like the song needed for peace in BILL AND TEDS movie, from WYLD STALLIONS.
Ren is a musical genius!
Rap: Rhythm And Poetry
Ren is amazing...true artist 🔥🙏🔥
Rap and hip hop are poetry. It's the caliber of the poet that determines whether it's fine art or just words put together.
You should check his band live on the street doing I Shot the Sheriff ❤
People are talking a lot about peaky blinders too
We forgive you cuz you got it! We call this a surprise reaction. I think you guys might like money games 1&2
He has an amazing range.
It's interesting seeing people take this song lightly. If you listen to it after reading about Ren's history, it changes how you feel about it.
As you will find out "beautiful soul" is a perceptive description. Regarding the video you are correct, filmed in one take, the guitar and vocal was also live. I look forward to following you journey. Not my words, but every apt @The only predictable thing about Ren is his unpredictability@.
great reaction guys thanks
Put in mind he is doing this independently, doesn't have a record label to promote his music, that's why the views aren't "hundreds of millions" he depends pretty much on street performance and on people sharing his music and so on
Enjoy the Ren journey ❤
I suggest "what you want" by Ren. You won't be disappointed. Very nostalgic and old school.
giggling throughout, is odd.
Ren has no genre because he has tackled every genre and conquered all .. in live one takes too ..enjoy your journey
It took you a while, but in the end you got it. Now, go back and listen again, individually.
A handful of other reactors. (500 maybe? Lol)
I think he does have a beautiful soul and is wise beyond his years.
Ren said that it WAS done in one take, but it was the fourth take!!
"cold and the food is bland" sounds like us to be fair
Haha Canada isn’t much different, but I genuinely loved it there, even though my family left England several generations ago I was still raised with a lot of English life styles. Thanks for the comment!
@@jordanamandareact No worries. Enjoy your stereotypical Crumpets and tea🤣
@@BadmanBaxter 😂😂😂
Cheers!
Thank you for getting the facts correct. Too many people share what they "heard" and spread misinformation.
@@jordanamandareact Someone on twitch asked if he might go to an open mic night, and he said he might at some point.
Ren has no Box Ren calls his style as BARDCORE and all I can is #BARDCORD4LIFE
GENIUS!!!!
You gotta check out Sick Boi. A banger. ✌️😎
Great reaction. "Cillian" is pronounced with a hard "k" sound, just to let you know.
Liked and subscribed.
