It'd be cool if you cover Vision of Escaflowne someday. I feel like it's one that's becoming forgotten; it's mostly just old fans who still remember it. I don't see it talked about much, and it doesn't seem to have developed a cult following like other experimental late-90s shows, like Serial Experiments Lain or Revolutionary Girl Utena.
The first time I finished Escaflowne I went on Tumblr made a very short post about how I didn’t get it. Which I expected to be of course ignored. I mean, it was honest I didn’t get it, but I was also really just shooting the shit as you did back in the day. Could be read as even kind of snooty. I was surprised a few hours later to get genuinely nice explanations trying to help me get it. But at that point I was more struck by the fact this no-one show from no-where no one had ever heard about (I’d only found it because I won a dvd at my local library raffle) still had a fandom. And that they were apparently genuine and nice.
I just discovered this channel and I'm feeling pretty lucky about that. As I get older, I want to reach further back in time which happens to include the days of being a care-free teenager with a fresh new tape from Blockbuster or a shop in Chinatown.
Watching the first minute of this video reminded me how expressive 90s anime used to be. With fewer frames budgeted for, they really made each frame count. I miss those days.
When you spoke of the Fantasy Mech shows, you also have the two major chibi mech shows of the mid to late 80's and early 90's, Magical Hero Wataru and NG Knight Lamune & 40. Though the nail I think you hit on the head, is that the Lina/Naga mech fight really is an allegory on hardcore fans petty fights over everything from best girl to best Gunpla, to Star Wars or Star Trek. LoL. Good video as always.
Wataru gets missed a lot in the West, but after it popped up in Super Robot Wars a few years ago I looked into it - it really was a big deal in its time and was pretty important in setting up the 90s wave of fantasy anime.
Iirc, fantasy and scifi are actually a lot closer than you think. Something about how "scifi" as a genre was none existent for a long time, as it was subsumed inside the lavel of "fantasy".
I recently watched Slayers, I can say I miss the 90s anime aesthetic. It was charmingly camp and extra. It also allowed for characters to have unique and memorable designs and avoid the same face issue.
Same face was present in 90's anime too (same goes for the 70 & 80's), but I do agree that the designs were definitely more memorable compared to the more subdued ones we get (outside of kiddie anime) nowadays
I enjoy your videos and getting both a review, summary, and context for each OVA you showcase, but it's always such a neat treat to hear RPG music in the background too.
I recognize that BoF music... Also Thousand Arms. It's the soundtrack a slayers video deserves ahaha I think the only Slayers that my spouse and I were a little disappointed with was the 2 new seasons that felt like they should have been one season. But even then it was cool to see new Slayers after that long.Maybe one day it'll get the Brotherhood treatment and we'll finally be able to see the other demon lords.
A quote from sir Arthur Clarke, "any technology to sufficient development is indistinguishable from magic". I dislike that people try to make a distinguishment between tech and magic.
I loved this Slayers Great movie. The Golem Fight was the stuff of legends. Oppai Vs Flat, Voluptuous Vs Cuteness, a rivalry that has been done plenty of times in Anime before and since then.
This Slayers movie was one of my favourites to watch when I was getting into anime back in late Elementary School/early High School. The premise alone of two bickering dunderheads settling their differences in a giant robot battle sounded like a grand time for kid me that really got into fantasy and mecha anime back then. While I know there are other high fantasy anime series that do as good job balancing the fantastical with the comedy elements ('Tower of Druaga' or 'Sands of Destruction' comes to mind), I'll always appreciate Slayers for being one of those series that served as a solid entry point for me getting into anime. Hopefully one day you'll do a retrospective video that covers 'Vision of Escaflowne' (the series or the feature film), 'Record of Lodoss War', 'Rune Soldier', or even Mahō Tsukai Tai! (Magic User's Club).
Fantasy and sci-fi aren't even that different so it makes sense that we have lots of fantasy mech shows like Rayearth, Dunbine and Escaflowne, as well as comedic (but still awesome) ones like Lamune, Wataru and Granzort Although as much as I love me some _Slayers_ and as much as I love the idea of Lina in a mech, Great was never one of my favs, I mean, I certainly like it more than Try & Revolution, but I rarely ever go back to this one (Also nice to see this get reupped)
OK, so I started watching this without looking at the description and was thinking. "Am I going crazy? Didn't you cover this already? I swear you did!" And then I saw the originally aired note. Nice to know that part of my sanity is still intact.
Slayers Great is in my opinion the best of the movies. While it has the lowest stakes and the least dramatic plot, I feel that the overall script and pacing are much more solid than any of the other 3 films. The first movie has arguably the highest stakes and most drama, but it's severely dragged down by a very slow, long first act and a rushed third. Same goes for Slayers Gorgeous, which really drags things out at the start. Slayers Return is probably the next best for reasons you've stated, but I don't think it's as good as Great because the plot feels a little unfocused, at least to me. As goofy as Great is, I just feel like it's the most focused. There's a clear arc and sequence of events and not a lot of random BS introduced at any given moment. Anyway, looking forward to Gorgeous next year, and I hope you also cover the OVAs, Premium, Revoluton and Evolution-R some day.
That's the power HD Blu-ray masters, though sadly in _Slayers_ case it only applies to the movies and OVAs (the TV series' film prints no longer exist)
Well a I had no idea what :21 actually was and went on some random stuff last nite and discovered Video Girl Ai, suprised it totaly went under my radar but not, I was living in BFE central US KS when i was around the age it came out 13-14 being 44 now and just discovered it, rather good series, maybe its a good thing as I am a person thats rather depressive something i still see a therapist to this day about. Ngl the show brought back some emotions i keep on lock down. Does the manga have a much happier ending?
Fans.... didn't like this? You're telling me that a film series that leans on it's comedic absurdity went too far with this movie? XD I must respectfully disagree. It might not have a climactic fight against a genuine danger like the other 3 features, but it doesn't need it. The film is a fun subversion of the previous 2 entries by not only introducing villains with aims of conquest, who COULD be dangerous if given the chance, but it then dashes their plans by putting this father/son rivalry into the middle of it, and the payoff is remarkably funny. All 4 Slayers features may not be in the same league as "Monty Python's Holy Grail," but I submit it's what I would recommend if somebody wants another fantasy/comedy where it's specifically poking fun at all of the tropes and cliches known to the Arthurian or D&D derivative genres.
Wish I could meet and hang out with you. It'd be nice to chill with people as based as this once in awhile, least while I'm young enough to be pleasant company... ~ c:
Gotta love how he chose the scene to compare original with the dub, and the dub actually sounds decent...and the before and after that small part, dub quality demonstrated in this video is generally trash.

I was literally thinking this same thing.
Escaflowne is currently streaming on ITV X in the UK 🇬🇧

I remember when it aired on Fox Saturday morning for maybe 2 weeks!

What is a difference between robot and golem?
I commented on the original video but I can't remember what I said but have another comment anyways! Loved Slayers Great personally.
This is the best channel on RUclips, dude, u do great work
I recently watched Slayers, I can say I miss the 90s anime aesthetic. It was charmingly camp and extra. It also allowed for characters to have unique and memorable designs and avoid the same face issue.
Yeah, 90s anime was typically low budget but creative. Which is imo a lot better than big budget but bland. There's lots of good stuff to discover!
Same face was present in 90's anime too (same goes for the 70 & 80's), but I do agree that the designs were definitely more memorable compared to the more subdued ones we get (outside of kiddie anime) nowadays
@@ErytronneThe variety in hair and personalities made up for whatever same face ever crept up imo.
You forgot Maze the Megaburst Space. That is a great anime plus OVA.
Of the Slayer movies I have seen, Slayers Great is probably one of my favorites.

So when are we going to get some Kyoto Video merch?
Serdio Castle! Great taste in background music there. ❤
the goofyest witch clowns for the silliest mecha-golem battles
thanks youtube, very cool, i needed an excuse to rewatch

Slayers back at it again
I love that if you listen closely you can here the bgm from the legend of dragoon in the background 13:45
I loved this Slayers Great movie.
The Golem Fight was the stuff of legends.
Oppai Vs Flat, Voluptuous Vs Cuteness, a rivalry that has been done plenty of times in Anime before and since then.
Very high quality transfers
90s anime is a beauty!
JC need to make more slayers
I love that you added Xenogears music to thos video.

Turning Lena Inverse in a Marketeabel Golem
holy shit was the klezmer sting when the lina golem emerges from the sea in the actual anime?
Ok so it is a reupload. I swear I thought I was losing my mind while watching this till I scrolled down.

They should just remake the entire Slayers series, TV and Movies into one long running series.
Nah, they just need to animate what's left from the novels
@hocthaitrinh3640 Nah, take all of it, the anime, the movies, the novels and everything and make on big solid long running new anime of it all. Lol
@@adamnapolitano432 that's kinda greedy for a series that need a revival
Ah, I was sure you already covered this and this video felt super familiar, gotta love copyright. Anyways, comment for the algorithm.
@KaiserBeamz
will you be doing ones for the Slayers Gorgeous movie, Slayers Excellent ova & The Book of Spells special, i wonder? :3
I am blown away by the quality of this footage, looks nothing like any of mine.
That's the power HD Blu-ray masters, though sadly in _Slayers_ case it only applies to the movies and OVAs (the TV series' film prints no longer exist)
Lina; the original Funko Pop
Could you do a vid on Scrapped Princess someday? It gets zero attention and it's driving me nuts.

Could you do Bubblegum Crisis + spinoff OVA’s or Angel cop next?
I'm sure the last time I commented on this was about how much I enjoy the gags in this movie.
Re-upload or not, anytime I get to see coverage on the Slayers I am always down for it !❤ plus anything with Lina and Naga I'm always down for😂❤❤
Is this a re-upload?
Yes.
No, this is Patrick!

I'm not sure I like this franchise without Zelgadis, he's what makes it interesting
Why was this re-uploaded?
Copyright issues took the original version down.
Piko-piko Linachan!!
What is the theme song to Kyoto Video?
Not complaining, but why the re-upload?
ditto?
Copyright crap
