    Now I know why the Bessemer Lake Erie, Elgin Joliet Eastern and Pittsburgh Lake Erie all had SD38-2s . They didnt need to go fast, just pull a lot of weight, I cant believe there is no emoji for a train or railroad crossing

    • @ccrx6700
      @ccrx6700  Год назад

      That is correct Patrick, they weren't built for speed, but for heavy
      hauling. Although the owners manual says with the right gear ratio
      in the traction motors they could get up to 80 MPH. I'd believe it
      when I saw it tho. Guess you can put your editing skills to work
      and make some custom emojis....:-) Very much appreciate your taking the time to visit with us and check out the #1 locomotive video my friend.

    The former C&IM railroad in central Illinois had 6 SD-38-2s, supplanting 5 SD-9s and 2 SD-60s. When coal mining in central Illinois ceased operations, the SD-38-2s were sold to Union Pacific, and converted into hump yard slugs. All the original C&IM diesels are gone now, the last 2 were the only 2 RS-1325s made by EMD, and theyre both now in railroad museums, the #30 at Illinois Railway Museum, and 31 is at the Monticello Railway Museum, both in serviceable, operating condition.

    What does SD stand for, Dave? This was another great excursion to view the Number One train. You are a really great tour guide. Loved the personal note that you became an engineer on this train. Very nice memory. The best part of all is your pride in CCRX.

    • @ccrx6700
      @ccrx6700  Год назад +1

      SD is an acronym for special duty Shirley. Running the train here
      is a really cool job for a couple of months, then it's the same
      thing over and over. Track maintenance if much more interesting
      and challenging and you get to move around a whole more
      and do more different things. Really appreciate you my friend.

    This is excellent. Love the big SD's. I'm a model railroader, myself. May have to pick up one of those HO scale units. Even though I mostly model N scale. I'm surprised that the SD38's weren't more popular than they were. I guess everybody went with the SD40's because they needed mainline road engines pulling fast. Sounds like the 38's were geared for slower industrial lines.

    • @ccrx6700
      @ccrx6700  2 года назад +2

      Thank you Shane for the very nice comment and for watching
      the presentation. Yep the 38's main purpose for being built were
      for heavy hauling such as coal drags at slower speeds. I believe there
      were only 90 of them made, we have 2. The 40's were a significant
      improvement with an additional 1,000 HP.

    Another wonderful Video Dave, that drew me back in time when you showed your Kato Locomotive, I previously owned a hobby shop when Kato released the SD38-2 units (I think back in 2005) I sold a bunch of them in various road names including the Cumberland Mine units, from watching and learning about the mine & railroad from your videos I sure wish I held onto a couple of those Cumberland units.

    When I was working on Massachusetts Coastal RR all of our locomotives were GP series, mostly because the track curves were too tight for running 6 axle locomotives. The down side is all of that horsepower is then applied to only 4 traction motors.
    We bought a rebuilt GP-10 which had a turbocharged 16-645 rated at 3,000 hp. When you put 3,000 hp on a 4 axle locomotive it’s near impossible at times to control wheel slip. Add slippery rails during leafy grease season in the fall, and it couldn’t get out of its own way even with lots of sand.
    We did have one subdivision where 100-150 car consists were not uncommon. That GP-10 once it got rolling, could get right up to track speed like there was nothing behind. 100 cars with a single locomotive!
    It was also the only locomotive we had that was equipped with dynamic brakes. Not a lot of places on our railroad where dynamics were all that useful, but it was fun to play with it.

    • @ccrx6700
      @ccrx6700  3 года назад +1

      Awesome Bill 👍 understand the 4 axle, we might have been better off in long run with GP s. We got a good many sharp degree curves. 3 axle trucks hard on them. Also understand the wheel slip, our sd 40-2 has some issues with that here also, it actually more of a problem than our 38 - 2 thanks for the cool comment

    I read the Trains magazine article and it said you were an isolated railroad. It sounded like you have to barge all of your large rail equipment (locomotives and rolling stock) across the river to get on the property. If that is the case, that would make some interesting content for a future video, even if you don't have much to share visually on the subject (or maybe there are some still photos lying around of the equipment being moved in). The dash 2 is a change from all electromechanical (relay) controls to an early generation analog electronic control system. It was a modular system where each control function like load control, wheel slip control etc was handled by a specific module that plugged into a back frame. That way the modules could be easily replaced if necessary with no wiring changes. A lot of GP-38’s and SD-38’s were upgraded in the 1970’s to dash 2. Same for the 40 series.

    I want to add, on the HO model you can see the 2 radiator cooling fans on top of the
    loco near the front, the 2 fans in the middle of the loco are for the Dynamic Brake Blowers,
    those supply air to help cool the Dynamic Brake Resister Grids located on the side of
    the engine on both sides located directly below those fans, If you watch the vid on the sd 40 - 2

      Excellent you have a bell that would be cool hang out, ours sounds like an Amish dinner bell, hah ha. I could do a run sometime but the whole trip takes bout 45 minutes, dont think my phone cam would last that long... i may be making a run operating sometime, so if i do get do that, i will make a vid while i'm operating for sure, just never know when that will happen, the operators get upset if they put me running and dont call them out, so i try and avoid stepping on toes since i have work with these guys

      Thanks for the info, when Pan Am first came up for sale I approached
      a few of my friends and said we should buy the RR! Of course none
      of us anywhere near that kind of money, but it was fun thinking
      about owning a RR, I would be in charge of track of course.
      They may get another loco here in the future, but with so many
      other expenses they are facing it won't be for several years I figure.
      Am gonna try and persuade them to get an AC unit this time instead
      if our DC units. Big expense with us getting a new loco is in
      getting it shipped in since all our rolling stock has to be trucked and
      it ain't cheap to get a loco trucked in even tho it only has to go bout
      5 miles over state routes.

      Electro Motive Division is who made this they were a part
      of General Motors, now owned by Progress Rail which is owned
      by Caterpillar. The SD means Special Duty, the 38 is the model
      of the locomotive and the dash 2 is an electrical upgrade which
