Thanks for an excellent video. I love the presentation format which is very clear and concise. I would say though that I don't think that polarisation necessarily drives a reduction in actual common ground, objectively speaking. Subjectively, it appears so because of the reduction in communication and the narrowing of focus onto the polarising tooic. The perception of a lack of common ground on other topics then feeds the polarisation by allowing us to believe (often incorrectly) that the 'other side' are so different from us that we can safely ignore them and treat them as not being credible at all.
Love the drawings and how they add to the dialogue. So much better than music that is often distracting or jarring and actually subtracts from a unified message.
I also like the length of the video. 'Deep dives' of an hour plus can be great depending on topic, but other times you want something shorter.

Great video! The tribal element is embedded in us all and is an area in which governments and higher forces easily exploit and manipulate their populations, but with education, awareness, critical and non-judgmental thinking individuals can become more aware of their perceived polarization which could reduce a whole number of so called problems on this planet.
Tribes can exclude but they give a sense of purpose to communities, which drives the world.
Someone was talking about tribalism in video games and I was curious to learn more about tribalism and found this video. You're a great teacher here, it would have been awesome to have a lecturers that drew scenarios (I learn best with images). Thank you for sharing this

This is great. I need to be better equipped to explain how tribalism effects us all when speaking to family and friends about political and social issues. It's very telling to see someone parroting the general thoughts and views of a certain political party and then not be able to go into any details as to why they feel the way they feel. Thank you for this.
Another issue with tribalism is bigotry and how a group of people can isolate individuals from the group - I wish you would adress this issue more related to tribalism. Personally I don't like tribalism, I see more negative outcomes than positive outcomes from it, cos if an individual comes up with a new idea or questions some fundamental things within a tribe, he will be socially excluded why I honestly can't care less about social groups on a tribe level.
With the pros, there are the cons attached to the end of it. Yea you get that sense of community and belonging, but the problem is you have to conform to community standards and confine to certain standards to be accepted and be part of the group. If you don't or are "different" you can lose that in an instance as you will be shun and ostracized. Differences or not going with the norm is not tolerated. He didn't mention that aspect.
Tribalism is unavoidable. We need to be apart of groups to be healthy. Our families our friends our network. It's vital.

very interesting and well presented! however, it makes me think that both "us and them" are facing a paradox where different critical thinkers will always justify this polarization through reason, no matter how emotional or rational people are, everybody tend to be influenced somehow. 🤔

Fancy words, but I am well received in conservative and Republican circles. My personality, sense of humor, and sense of decency is appreciated by all. Also I respect my political opponents, despite our extreme philosophical differences.

Atheistic groups are nowhere near as tribalist as any theistic person. There may be some. But over all. Way less. Difference is some atheists may he tribalistic. However almost every theist is.
Absolutely love how you've approached tribalism through the use of a physical sketchbook to better explain visually (and that you've approached how tribalism isn't just "that bad thing that happens in our brain(s) to vilify our fellow men", but just another evolutionary thing that we as a species have to connect to each other with both pros and cons).
Makes me wonder if the next topic you can cover based on social science/psychology/neuroscience would be the study of heuristics and how the human brain provides perspective/worldviews, as that can connect to how tribalism can form in our minds and how heuristics/perspective-thinking can also carry its pros/cons.

Thanks for starting this series. This is something that I've been thinking about too, mainly in terms of my own "tribal" nature. I look at our President and his supporters, and find myself bewildered, and began to dismiss them as simply falling for tribalism. But then when I see a news report that reports something critical or damaging about the President, I find I'm more than inclined to believe it, and I look back and wonder "What happened to my skepticism? What happened to my presence of mind when I begin prejudging these claims as true?" Combine this with our new "bubble epistemology" and it's difficult to know the difference between what is true and false. The same thing seems to occur at work where I'm constantly rechecking my prejudgments about the people I work with, when I have all of these opinions that I can't justify. This can create a kind of cliquishness at work which is in itself harmful.
I hear you! I think when you become sensitized to your own tribal habits it's very natural to feel more conflicted and hesitant about your own judgments. I certainly do. It's not a pleasant feeling.
As you become More and Better, then, hopefully, so will your tribe.

Tribalism can be cured by traveling and learning about other cultures. Thanx to Internet and cheaper competitive prices it is not a hard thing to do.
But that takes conscious effort. In other words, either you or someone in your sphere of influence have to consciously, intentionally expose yourselves to other points of view. If we don’t do that, our default state is highly tribalistic. Basically, we’re all hardwired to become extremists.

I don't like to be parts of groups but I do have similar issues in terms of my own beliefs (diet/nutrition/political) and how I feel others are wrong and how this affects my emotions. Many of the opposing beliefs can lead to serious societal problems so the emotions can be strong (socialism as per Venezuela, animal consumption re: ethics and environmental problems, health care costs, etc).
Fascinating analysis.
The systems of polarization we have seem to feed a common capitalistic mechanism.
Liberals spend heavily on eco-friendly. Conservative spend heavily on munitions.
This is done more as a source of group identity and expressly as a demonstration of what group you are NOT with.
The divisions within political parties is huge but at least we're not THOSE people. Let's go to good ol' American McDonald's … or Starbucks … or Walmart … or Whole Foods.
Perhaps in a larger context, we should ask "When does polarization become profitable?"

Tribalism is humanism. That is why diversity exists, that is why the magic of life exists, that is why purpose exists. Differences and identity cannot exist with conflict. That is the way of nature, and it is something we must all accept as life. If your version of a perfect world is to get rid of the "us vs them" mentality, then you must kill everything that makes you human. Your personality, your ethnicity, your culture, your mindset, etc. So long as there are differences, there will be conflict. But that's nothing to be ashamed of. The universe was born from conflict and exists in it.

Tribalism and secret societies is what made my tribe survive intact under Christianity for centuries and this included ancient artifacts,lore even some writings and some of these things had to be buried and the reason the DNA of my tribal group still closely matches 500 year old European bodies of our tribe. We resisted assimilation in both countries made up mostly people like ourselves and countries with different types of Europeans. We shrunk and shrunk but still managed to continue to carry on for centuries and this survive even sometimes required the killing of traitors and children and breaking the tribe into thousands of unite's so the discovery of one would not destroy the other units or pieces of the tribe. We wished to survive as a people and a faith so we survived even now the pieces are still being reassembled. We have plenty of books in our tongue on the best way to break conditionings and to condition children. We normally try to foster two out of 6-8 children to other states to more effectively protect blood-line these days. We are taught to embrace strength and sacrifice weakness when a sacrifice is needed and such the blood lines are strengthened. The body,mind and spirit. all are considered important. We used to use Christianity bible to exchange information and was effective even while the Christians where standing their. We have dress as preachers and nuns with a bible in hand before and even managed to subvert churches. Heretic,heretic,heretic. Do you hear the pride in such a chant even while the Christians are standing beside us chanting it. One must win the soul and the mind the Christians never really understood this. We are more then able to twist Christianity farther and warp it to our agenda but we are not the only ones, and we would do the sames to the Jews and Muslims. We are only on one side ours but play them all. We have been playing Christians for centuries now we also have to play the game with different skin colors and this is not a preference but something the weak forced upon themselves. We lived and they die, no big deal unless it has a negative impact upon us and we are not connected to the word tribal in anyway and can change it when it no longer amuses us or advantages us. We are one after all.

I disagree with the idea that tribalism is not inherently harmful at least in terms of morality and modern necessity that is to say I am sure it had either earlier in our species history or our wider history a function who's good from a species survival point of view far out weighed the bad, but I believe today tribalism is the catalyst for far too many evils and far too few goods to be called anything other than an ineradicable blight on our species quest for a more moral society.
Group identity has always been a double-edged sword. The negatives are clear, the positives don't get enough attention, I think. Human beings are an ultra-social species, and we're adapted to living in groups. Our greatest cultural achievements are made possible by our ability to share information and collaborate in groups. I don't want to downplay the dark side of tribalism, but a society without group identities and group bonds isn't a human society.
I'm not sure that it is fair to even make a distinction between tribalism and morality. I guess I don't know how "tribalism" is defined exactly, other than having a common understanding of what it means in our political culture, but I would make the following conjecture. "Tribal" psychology as such might also be the foundation of our altruistic nature. Because what is the alternative to a tribe? A dynasty, which I would contrast to a tribe in that a dynasty is purely based on kinship relationships. Tribes originate as kinship relations, but they begin exchanging wives, enslaving other tribes but eventually making their descendents citizens of the tribe. Notice how many of the "tribes" we are talking about are things like vegetarians, or political conservatives. That is, we tend to unite together based on ideas and sentiments, not on blood. On this basis we generalize the idea of tribe to include the "brotherhood of humanity" or "citizens of the world", and now we find a way to universalize our tribe. But it is easy to forget that this kind of morality is an evolution and generalization of a much more primitive kind of morality that sees no further than the survival and flourishing of the tribe.
I suppose my thought is that with the pragmatic positives of working together being clear to a conscious mind, there would be no need for the subconscious drivers that so often motivate people to be terrible, however I suppose it would be night impossible to pick apart what makes us tribalistic from what doesn't and whether there are any tribalistic parts that help us to live up to our own moral codes/aspirations.
Hmmm. Interesting comment, "Chump Town". I think the "Good" (Evolution Toward Creational Levels Of Species Excellence) does "outweigh" the "bad" (that which causes devolution). I further think that there is one thing that the "Good" has to learn. And that is to early identify certain Negative Individual Characteristics and neutralize, or eliminate them...so that these parasitical and disruptive characteristics cannot attain dominance over the Good Of Us and Our Ways. In short We need to learn to minimize the harmful effects of those among Us, who tend only to their own quests...at the expense of the rest of Us. So much work has yet to be done about this problem. Thanks to Our Human Behavior and Psychology studies, We are beginning to be able to recognize the negative ones among Us.
I say this because I believe in the ultimate victory of Good over bad.

At around 7:00 you talk about how tribal thinking can lead to self segregation of different groups with worldviews they perceive to be incompatible.
I agree with you on that point, but you seem to be suggesting (maybe it wasn't your intention) that people's differences are usually trivial and that this division is undesirable. This claim always makes me think of Lilliput and Blefuscu from Gulliver's Travels. As I see it, people really do have fundamentally incompatible worldviews and their distaste for each other may just mean they are being more conscientious. In Pakistan, nearly 9 in 10 people believe that theft warrants the death penalty. Here in the US, many are very outspoken about the use of capital punishment under any circumstances. Both, I trust, are sincerely held beliefs. To ask either side to abandon their moral positions for the sake of getting along is to promote an a-moral attitude. At the same time, we should just agree to disagree.
As long as these groups can avoid some of the pitfalls you mentioned (violence/intellectual laziness), walking away from the argument and ignoring each other seems like a good solution. The problem as I see it is government antagonism. Unlike Americans and Pakistanis, Democrats and Republicans share a government. When the state offers to take sides, or to sponsor the practices favored by one side at the expense of the other, there is bound to be animosity. A good example of this is abortion. Some people sincerely believe that abortion is the same as murdering an adult person in cold blood. I don't believe it, but I applaud those who do for protesting our public policy. Those who shrug it off demonstrate a total lack of moral principle.

This is very interesting. It seems, however, there is huge room for improvement-and without much effort.
With regards to the attempt at illustrating your ideas, if you haven't already done this, I'd suggest the following:
• Getting to a Barnes & Noble and reading,
- BLAH BLAH BLAH: What To Do When Words Don't Work -Dan Roam
- the Sketchnote HANDBOOK -Mike Rohde
• speak to an illustrator who understands storyboarding.
• test your storyboard illustrations on a diverse audience to see if what you're drawing is effectively communicating the message.
With regards to *The Dangers of Tribalism,* I'd suggest you reacquaint yourself with the classics:
- The SNEETCHES -Dr. Seuss
- The Butter Battle Book -Dr. Seuss
Suggestion: When using such illustrations, avoid _Professor Speak_ and any PowerPoint-type teaching.

Tribalism is the need to be part of a group. To be in a group has its pros and cons. However, what is happening is that people become a hive mind and let those in the lead dictate what to think; critical thinking and objectivism is cast aside. These are people with the laziness to uphold and challenge their own individual cognition. The person values a *specific* portion of a group's ideology (a piece of the pie) rather than the universal, entire whole (the whole pie). Extreme tribalism doesn't allow compromise, which will lead to more polarization.
If some powerful person really understood all this tribal stuff they could incite one tribe and set it upon another and just watch.
I have a feeling this has already happened many times.

Does Google's search engine categorize us and ensure that we stay in our own little echo chambers that gradually becomes smaller, louder, and more highly differentiated from all the other little echo chambers? If so, what an incredibly powerful and effective device for uprooting everyone from reality for usurping political power by divide to conquer. Are all these tiny, highly-polarized, mutually-hostile echo chambers that are pretty much divorced from reality what is meant by the much touted "cultural diversity"?

freierHimmel I don't think any of us think people should *literally* organize themselves into tribes. We're just identifying the advantages (and disadvantages) of people self-identifying into groups.
Like I mentioned, people on RUclips almost always bring up tribalism in a *negative* context. But like you said there's nothing wrong with organizing into groups toward solving a common cause. We're wired to find meaning by identifying with groups who help us place ourselves among the greater whole and give us social goals to work toward.
Well i think that to freely cooperate in groups for common goals like fun is pretty normal behavior. The thing gets dangerous and restricts thinking and idividualism when there is peer pressure involved. Like when certain exeriences, beliefs, ideas and facts may not be spoken and certain conclusions may not be drawn, if you dont want to be excluded from the tribe and face group retaliation. In short, ideological tribes that fight ideologies or other (even fictional) tribes. Even if you dont identify with any tribe, if an idea you voice, fits their list of forbidden ideas you will get labeled as enemy, nobody will listen to you anymore and you get attacked by that group. And no social rules of the tribe count for you anymore (hypocrisy).
I see this especially in communist, socialist and other marxist tribes (say anything national=National Socialist). Also Feminism acts that way (Question any of their beliefs and you are called an misogynist). In some tribal Islamic countrys you can even get killed for questioning islamic traditions.
This is very troublesome, and has led to many cruel wars and even the world-wars.
Im looking for a way to get trough to these tribalistic people that dont want to listen or even discuss their ideas as soon as you are labled and try to restict your freedom of speech and assiciation (no plattforming).

I had lots of thoughts watching that ranging from "I have no tribe" to remembering that I can be judgemental and polarized against those who polarize...until I converse with people I judge, then, of course, I get a better measure of what the person is about. I've spoken lots about education..all going back to that and I still hold that belief but I guess there are those who believe they are educated enough just a different education that we think is required for better understanding of politics and people. The us and them for me is those of us who aim to be inclusive, understanding and compassionate and them who don't display such desires even when they think they are understanding..what they understand however doesn't match reality. Brexit here in the UK has certainly shaken up the grouping in political leanings...the left and right split into leave, remain and democratically finding a way of compromise between both, the left wing Brexit, the right wing Brexit whatever that is and the far right Brexit we know too well the meaning. Then the centrists/breakaway parties taking advantage of the situation for political gain and polarizing even further. When we feel what we do makes little to no difference it's easy to give up and that's when the manipulation of those taking advantage for political gain works best.
I've seen 2 people very close to me that have become radically polarized in a matter of 2 years. These are very smart and previously compassionate people. It's mind boggling. Search "roger mcnamee zucked" on RUclips. It's a 51 minute interview and it explains how social media is used influence and polarizes people. He talks a little about brexit and the US election too. BTW it's not a crazy conspiracy video. 😁 Stay strong and stay you!

Is it polarization when that tribe is forcing all other tribes into conflict or submission? no matter how remote or localized those tribes may be, just doing their thing.

I've been constructing a theory on this subject, and it looks like that the intergroup dynamics fluctuate in an 80-year cycle, meaning that there is a peak in group tightness every 80 years, which leads to the rise of nationalism (in our age of nations): jannemiettinen.fi/FourthTurning/

I recently went vegan. I would like to live with other vegans. I am really distressed by carnism. I understand this can lead to polarisation but I don't know how to deal with this. I think that killing animals to eat them is ethically wrong. I don't think less of anyone for being a carnist though, I understand that it's part of our culture, but that also does not make it okay to pay for someone to kill an animal. I don't want to get too deep into an echo chamber, I'm a sociologist, I should know better. Other than trying to watch lots of debates and anti vegan videos I don't know what else I can do. A lot of anti vegan videos seem to focus on health rather than the ethical issues.
