For the record: this is from the Richard Tucker Gala at Carnegie Hall in 1987. It was quite an evening and you can watch most of it on RUclips. Bonynge is conducting here because he was in the house to conduct Dame Joan who was also on the program. He knew this opera score inside out. Leech and Lorengar had just done a production in Berlin. This is the kind of musical magic that happens when everyone involved has the music in their BLOOD. Their ovation was long and DEAFENING and totally well deserved. We all cheered till we were hoarse.

Lorengar already died in 1996,so 14 yrs ago,but she is still so much around, play records and see youtube regularly.I have never been so pleasantly surprised when she sang at abt 64 yrs of age with a huge volume and hardly vibration. She sang still brilliant in her "spare time" A great soprano and she looked superb It was a shock to hear she died at only 68 yrs of age(1928-1996)Many singers stop too late the examples are numerous, but Pilangar remained high quality till the end
    Brilliant soprano

Eureka! I didn't expect to find this. I once had this on video tape, but it somehow got erased, to my dismay. Leech has one of the most beautiful and sensual voices. We need to hear more from him! This is indeed gorgeous and a keeper. Thanks Operazine!!!

Just discovered this duet which has the most sensuous melody; I listen to it often! Richard Leech has an incredibly beautiful and expressive voice and shows real dramatic involvement in this concert. I've always loved Pilar Lorengar's voice and I love the way her voice blends with his.

A few years ago, I saw Maestro Leech during the Martina Arroyo Foundation's 15th anniversary gala, and I stopped him and told him that this was some of the most stunning singing I've ever heard. This is brilliant in every way. I return to it often, and it just gets better every time.

This is amazing! Some of the best singing you could ask for! There is nothing wrong with his jaw and Leech has not declined at all, but he, unlike so many tenors today, actually KNOWS HOW TO SING without pushing or screaming! BRAVO!!!!

They’re singing this in German because they recently did a production of the opera in Berlin. The most famous recording of it on electrically recorded 78s is with Teschemacher and Wittrisch and that’s also in German (and one of the best). The 59 year old Lorengar is sensational here. Talk about STEADY, vibrant, thrilling top right up to high Bs and Cs. Bonynge also knew the score inside out, from conducting the Decca recording and many live performances. You’re not going to hear this duet sung by anyone anytime soon. And certainly not as brilliantly as this. It’s a brutally difficult duet.

I also had it as a video tape and am so happy to find it here. Richard Leech is huge ! I also saw his sessions of recording of his Faust with Studer, directed by Michel Plasson, on french TV, and he was very impressive and idiomatic in his "Salut, demeure chaste et pure".

It was some time in the early 90's at the Deutsche Oper Berlin (hence the German) in a staging by John Dew. As I recall Leech was brought in at the last minute to replace another tenor. He had a spectacular success in the premiere.

It is very interesting to hear a German version of this duet. They sounds cold and un-dramatic against Giulietta Simionato and Franco Corelli. But Richard Leech tries, he was working hard to create a good duet.

Odd, an American Tenor and Spanish soprano singing in german rather than French, but superb from both- I see Richard Bonynge is conducting and he is no longer young. Not sure when Lorengar left us, but this couldn't have been that many years ago- does anyone know?

More like she couldn't have sung this role when she was younger (up to her mid 30s when she dived full time into opera), because she needed her voice to develop from a musical theatre/zarzuela trebble singer to a fuller lyric soprano singing long operatic roles like Elsa or Manon Lescaut.
Valentine from Huguenots (Meyerbeer) was a role she debuted when she was in her late fifties, therefore, 30 years older than the character she plays, yet her voice was fresh and perhaps better placed for this repertoire then than when she was Valentine's age.

Excellent but if he could he should have done it like Marcel Wittrisch up to the D flat but superb singing I wonder what happened to him he showed such promise when I heard him first then disappeared his voice superior to most other tenors

John Blasiak He basically lost HIS voice due to singing these types of roles etc poor 👦. I love this duet it's so powerful. Pilar is well past her prime but she held her own. Richard Leach continued to sing this role much to his demise. Pilar lorengar died of cancer. A truly great lyric spinto.

I think Marcel Wittrisch sings this duet the most beautiful, but as much beautiful, but little differently is sung by my favorite for ever, Franco Corelli (he also has the advantage of being there most handsome Raoul).
