Honestly, I don't think this mod has been remade in a way that's really fun. The genetic diseases are either an all or nothing deal. You cannot selectively pick which ones you want in the config, in case you want to try and keep a pet monster alive through bionics. There's no late game options to stabilize a creation in any way. I can get not wanting to stock up on an army, but there should still be an expensive way to keep one if you really want it for long-term colonies.
Greater scaria is also stupid and I almost always turn off the raids from this mod because getting some dumb legendary chickens show up that don't even give meat is awful. But because it's just a toggle I can't just set it to like 80% chance to rot like I can for normal scaria.
They also explicitly said the human hybrids will never have proper pawn-like qualities. So if you want to play a colony of awful mutants, that's not really possible.
It's like they took a page out of Tynan's book, but decided they could one-up the guy in terms of difficult game design. (Except you still have the very un-vanilla-like super overpowered mechanoid hybrids, that pretty much trivialize the game! Legendary frames can also do this, and only really require you make a chicken grinder.)
If you question them nicely about any of these design decisions, the devs get pretty mad. It's still a really neat mod, but I think I still prefer the original just because it leans more into the sandbox experience of modded rimworld, trusting the player to adjust the challenge as they see fit. Oh, and somewhere in one of the hybrid descriptions it talks about "catgirls going nya".
Honestly I feel like the success chances are a fucking lie
So far, my only problems with the mod have been how "obtuse" it is. That is to say, if you go in blind, you're going to be struggling for quite some time to figure out how things work, what things do, and what is even worth doing.
Luckily, there are some options in the base game that allow you to "start with whatever the heck you want and in whatever quantity you want", so that you can sort of play around with things.
Beyond that, I sort of wish it also had more like you say. I was hoping the "humanoid" hybrids would be able to work like the pawns, but they don't. But, don't let that stop you from grafting animals onto your pawns to just generally make them overpowered and broken on their own.
ANd yeah, no way to stabilize your creatures at the end of their lifespans sucks... But, at least you can sort of still use them before they die. Or, send them on crazy suicide missions into other settlements to kill everyone for more DNA.
It's interesting as a mod, but doesn't quite go far enough to crazy territory.
Still, the best part of the mod is basically hybridizing your existing pawns with animals to make them broken.
