Guys that was awesome! Thank you! I gave you a hard time in the past but this drop shot info was insanely good. I just started buying blanks to make my own drop shot rods, etc., and now have great info as to what I need. Cheers
Very informative! I appreciate you mentioned the Whippet, I've been using Zodias 264UL as my dropshot rod from shore in Tamagawa River (Tokyo), which is pretty shallow. This video has finally convinced me to switch gears to the Whippet. The only "downside" for me is that it is a one-piece rod, which makes it a little uncomfortable for commuting in the rush-hour Tokyo trains. Thank you for the video!
I have both the NRX+ 852 and 872 spinning rods. Everything you said about the NRX+ line is spot on. The new Shimano Expride B 7’ Light (actually a ML+) is the best nose hook drop shot rod I have found, the tip can handle 3/8 oz wts.
I only have one drop shot rod. So I use a dobyns Sierra 703 sf 7’0 medium/fast . It’s really their senko, shakey head rod, but for me it’s a good all around option. Seems more parabolic than a normal fast action
I just got a Dobyns Sierra 701 baitcaster with a Curado BFS...Im loving that rod. It's not as high end as I normally use but it's a fun rod to fish. Been catching Smallies on Bull Shoals Lake Ark and using it for Ned's and Drop shot too. Kinda cool using a baitcaster for DS and Ned rigs.
Really dig my Dobyns Sierra 702 and fuego LT set up…not super high end but it’s a solid combo for a drop shot, I’ll throw small paddle tails on and Ned rig
I’m in Atlanta, Ga I love the material, the shop is dope. When I’m in the area visiting I will be stoping by. You guys are great! Look into some sort of membership for free delivery I would definitely join that
Another fun video! Remember back in the late 90s or in 2000, G. Loomis made a bait casting drop shot rod called the DSR820C. Well, the local tackle shop here pulled one out about six years ago a NOS. I looked at that scratch my head I never seen a drop shot in a bait caster. I had to get it. I’ve been using that for my nose hook drop shot for smallies with a BFS Daiwa real And holy cow it’s a fish catching machine I love that set up. It casts a country mile just lobbying it. Another great advantage of the casting may be over spinning is that you don’t get the line twist as you do with spinning ourfit . I have to use a barrel swivel on my spinning rod to limited and line twist. I love videos like this!
Love the videos guys, we have pretty similar tastes in dropshot rods. Always wondered why people hate throwing the dropshot, you can target cast it and work it quickly more effectively than dragging a jig imo. One thing that scares me off from the steez rods is those carbon guides. I’m very careful with my stuff and still managed to break one on a legend extreme. My favorite for nose hook is a Dobyns xtasy 7’2” medium light. Just perfect action for nose hooked all the way up to 3/8 ounce imo. Got it paired with a Stella, real boujee
I do a lot of dropshot fishing from shore, and to get out to where the fish are, I typically throw 1/2 oz dropshot sinkers, so I prefer a slightly heavier and longer rod (fast action will cast further than x-fast). I like 7 lb fluoro leader and 10 lb braid on my spinning outfits….also 3000 series reels….if I was fishing on a boat, I’d probably go lighter and shorter on the rod selection, and use 2500 reels.
Size 1 Neko Hooks (Straight Shanked) just hook TDC everytime for me on smallies here in ChiRaq. I've lost too many on nose hooks although I like the decoy shot 10 that you recommended.
@The Hook Up Tackle You're so right on the not moving the worm... I've caught so many fish just full out ADD looking at a bird or something and just slowly dragging it instead of shaking it. The water current makes it move so natural. Also like you said about the sensitivity, if the tip is too soft it absorbs that vibration. I think that is why NRX+ are so sensitive but so damn stuff.. it's almost better having a fast tip instead of extra fast.. Great rod breakdown though 👌
Here’s one for you…. Sometimes in big waves on the Great Lakes I have used an NRX+ 902S SJR…. I feel it doesn’t jack the bait off the bottom as much and has great length for pinning big smallies on a threaded hook.
Great video, only wish that it had come out a few weeks ago. I had the Megabass Shaky Head Rod and the Whipsnake, not sure I needed both or how I would use both I sold the Shaky Head rod and now I wish I hadn't. I still have the Whipsnake, and think I'll keep it and may contemplate buying another Shaky Head Rod to have what sounds like a really good 1 2 punch. I have Steez AGS ML and a Steez AGS M. Love both sticks but there is something that keeps pull me to the Megabass rods.
My favorite technique. I use the old Steez AGS 7’6 MML from shore and the Nrx 822dsr from my kayak. If the new Steez line had foam grips I would have switched both rods to the new line but to each their own🤷🏼♂️
I got the new one and love it. I'm surprise they don't ever talk about the Steez 76MML. Probably one of the best spinning rods ever made. We might just need to keep our advantages to ourselves.
I like the NRX+ DSR but everyone likes something different. They are great for not losing fish. I also like the 872 for heavier drop shots . The action of the NRX+ 822 reminds me of my old Shimano Aero rods with the TN handles.
Yep Ben is spot on on the Loomis DSR...I own a GLX and it is not good. It will be donated to a kid soon so they can have some Loomis bragging rights before they figure out they don't like it either! 😉
Dropshot is always tied on regardless of what I'm throwing. It works all year & will get a bite in the harshest of times. Some waters we're less likely to throw it but on others it's a guarantee 20-40 fish days without even trying.
Ben, when you say that you prefer the Loomis SYR rod over the DSR, are you referring to the same 822s rod, just in the SYR model? The reason I ask, is that the SYR model is only rated up to 5/16 oz versus the 3/8 oz rating of the DSR. I know that isn't a ton of difference, but I wanted to make sure I was looking at the right model. Thanks
Trying to understand, you say that the Addermine will be the best pairing with the Windbuster. What does it do better than the Baby Plugging or Whippet as a complimentary rod?
How about if put a BFS reel with the daiwa finesse game special? I have a daiwa Gekkabijin air tw pe. I’m using with a Dobyn’s bfs rod for drop shotting and I like it but I want a nicer rod with it. I was wondering if the STEEZ finesse game special would match well with the Gekkabijin without overpowering the reel?
I use baby plugging and i agree its a niche rod .i bought it for okashira had ,spark shad rod but it became my favorite and dedicated hazadon shad ,drop shot rod .i dont agree about it can’t handle big fish well. i have caught bunch 5,6 Lb bass it handles good and yeh man don’t shake rod when u dropping.
Didn’t mean that it can’t handle big fish, meant that it doesn’t have a ton of power to move big fish away from cover. I’ve also caught a bunch of big smallies on it, love the rod! 👍🍻
I sooo needed this video!!! I'm fairly new to your site, and absolutely love the content....I'm in the upstate NY area and have been going back and forth over the Whipsnake and the Shaky Head. I'm hitting both large and small mouth and was trying to decide if the Whipsnake was going to be too light for fishing up to 25' of water????....am I losing sensitivity going to the Shaky Head?
Well I wish your wallet luck! Soon as you find this channel, you find yourself placing multiple orders a month. Their on point, ship super fast, rods come in very heavy tubes… just a great retailer to deal with. Plus their content is A+
@customverno my bank account hurts every week from @TheHookUpTackle lol. They are THE premier US Domestic Market JDM shop. I have both the whipsnake and shakeyhead special. Whipsnake is better for dropping straight down and is a deeper bend (which is why it's called whipsnake) it will toss light lures really well. Shakeyhead has soft tip but slightly more backbone. I found it difficult to decide between the two also, so I got both 🤣 I'd say the shakeyhead is probably better at casting and dragging for bottom contact. Whipsnake dropping vertical but can be used for lighter jerks and cranks because of the deeper bend. Hope that helps! Now to decide between the different lines lol.
Perfect timing on this video. I've just started looking for a new mid to high ish end spinning rod for drop shot and ned rig, maybe small swimbait like a 3" spark shad on a okashira screw head. Thanks for the reviews fellas. ✌🏻😎🎣
I don't dropshot, because I'm always river fishing. I know someone must of thought of this before, but it seems like just to be different you could bobber stop then just run the line through the hook eye and then sinker. Just use a floating plastic...even place multiple bobber stops for different baits. Call it a free shot, lol. Anyone anyone ever try?
Drop shot til I die! I have 2 ark reinforcers, both ml but one's 6'10 and one's 7'3. The short one's perfect, but throwing a 6" fat roboworm t-rigged is so much better on the long one.
Just bury the hook in the nose instead of popping it out of the top, without switching hooks. Over thinking your rod specifications can be too distracting. If you have the money, or you are tournament fishing, you could use as much confidence you can get. But it should not be necessary for most to have a specific drop shot rod. A 7' med weight, med fast action, 6-8 lb test, works great. I prefer burled cork. You also want to be able to swim with a drop shot. Also, dead sticking a drop shot works great, watching your line instead of feeling for it. It's the best presentation for bedding bass.
Damn man.............. You guys ROCK! Yes, Please do a Bubba-Shot vid guys! As always , Thanks ferrr Showin ana Sharin' Amigos! :) CHEERS , Drink one for me fellers!!! #BenForPresident
Started out as a LMB fisherman. Now mostly Bluefin Tuna and CA Yellowtail. Came here to get a recommendation on a new DS rod but come on guys! The rods you recommend cost more than my tuna rail rods! These companies are absolutely gouging you guys bc they know you go overboard with buying way too much technique specific gear/rods. How and the hell could anyone justify a $625 drop shot rod? As a serious offshore fisherman, stuff like this makes me cringe.
one of the major problem's is that when you watch videos about rod selection the Pro who is giving advice, does not understand the difference between power and action or just speaks without using the correct term. This leads to confusion and misunderstanding the difference.
Yeah I bought my G-Loomis imx and GL3 rods 30 years ago when they were 150-250 and came with a life time warranty. My friends thought I was nuts for spending that on a fishing rod. They were using Berkley lightning rods, and Shakespeare ugly sticks. I had a Berkley series one, and when I felt the G-Loomis I had to have it. Anyways my point is I am still fishing with my 30 year old G-Loomis rods, and still love them. My friends have bought 10 rods since then and still trying to find fishing rods for under 100 bucks and replacing them every other season. If you fish all the time the initial purchase can be hard to swallow, but you will probably be happy in the long run. That said 670 is a lot even for a G-Loomis, but I will probably buy one when I'm ready for a new rod...jimi
I’d like to know who out here is willing to spend that much for a fishing rod out of the line up they have suggested under the title info. My gosh on average $500 for just a dang rid to catch a bass. Holy s***. How about a recommendation for a drop shot rod that’s under the $200 price point.
Guys; I love the info and content, just most of the products you talk about, like the rods in this video. Are just too pricey. I do like how you showed 2 different price ranges for the spinning rod but your still in the mr. Money bags range at $250 plus as your lower price range. If you can get down to the buck50 to 200 dollar range more people would be able to afford.
Shimano Zodias and Expride B 2022 rods have a great variety of selections and have been my favorites regarding the price. G Loomis is owned by Shimano. G Loomis is made in the USA hence the price and Shimano is made oversea. Just as good as an Nrx+.
I agree Zodias and Expride are great rods for the price point! But, they're not NRX's. totally different graphite, totally different tapers, totally different guide train, lifetime warranty with Loomis vs 1 year warranty with Shimano.
"Most antlers don't know" this type of title has me backing out of a lot of channels. Dude it's not that hard. Pick a med lite or medium rod, tie a drop shot on, and catch fish. Don't degrade folks. Just say "here's our opinion on drop shot rods" . Pretty simple..
A few years ago I was in bad accident. Hit by a train. Not crying or anything but I can only dream of having high end gear. Im just happy to be fishing..🎣
I’ve never had a tackle store guy say “here take these and go out there and figure it out…”
What a dream that would be!
I enjoy the rabbit holes you go down. I love all the details, please keep it up!
Guys that was awesome! Thank you! I gave you a hard time in the past but this drop shot info was insanely good. I just started buying blanks to make my own drop shot rods, etc., and now have great info as to what I need. Cheers

finally some love for the steez spinning rods. i like those rods over the nrx+ for the action
perfectly said. I agree with the Loomis and p5 statements.
I can't believe the MegbassP5 Landsat wasn't mentioned For the nose hook baits. I also use the G Loomis NRX plus 852S for my heavier stuff.
I love the Landsat.

It’s a deadly way to catch them!
Earlier this season I bought the daiwa tatula drop shot I believe it’s 7’2 and man I had fun with it it also makes a great nekoand Ned rig rod
👊🍻
i use 20-60g feeder rod. light, sensitive, colored exchangeable tips, versatile. I use the same 3.6m rod for sea trout light spinning.

Which is better? Baby plugging or Whipsnake?
Edge LMX DRS 711-l light line special. Shimano 2000s Stella reel.
What size reel would you suggest for the 852S? Thanx in advance!

Is that hook tied on or does it slide up and down????
What else can the Spin Elsil do besides DS?
Would the NRX plus 822 DSR be ok for a megabass 110 jr?
You want a mod fast rod for crankbaits and jerkbaits. These are extra fast action
Is it a good idea to use sinking braid for dropshot or any bottom presentation?
Most sinking braid starts at 40 or so lbs. Very heavy for a finesse presentation
@@Tallnerdyguy I got some 15lbs sinking braid on my dropshot rod

GLX 822S DSR Loads of power. Best for Texas Rigging. Tough rod under load.

@@atamagashock Thank you!
@@thehookuptackle_usa would you say the Shaky Head would be better suited for my conditions?
@customverno my bank account hurts every week from @TheHookUpTackle lol. They are THE premier US Domestic Market JDM shop. I have both the whipsnake and shakeyhead special. @Josh & Bekah for braid to mono/fc the best is the FG knot. 100% strength, and smallest smoothest knot there is

A drop shot catches everything… that’s why bad rap I want to fish with a jig but drop shot so effective… same with senko lol😂
This is hilarious
Great info. I’m learning the drop shot. What’s some tips on how to keep the bait from helicoptering when casting ?
Try less whipping on the cast. More of a lob
I will never use a spinning reel for BFS especially with all the baitcasting options.
nice
Drop shot til I die! I have 2 ark reinforcers, both ml but one's 6'10 and one's 7'3. The short one's perfect, but throwing a 6" fat roboworm t-rigged is so much better on the long one.
It's way easier to manage the line on baitcaster and you get a faster gear ratio and I never get a loop around the spool
Gear ratios are similar in Baitcasting and Spinning. Compare the line pickup instead of the listed gear ratio and you'll see they're almost identical.
Just bury the hook in the nose instead of popping it out of the top, without switching hooks. Over thinking your rod specifications can be too distracting.
I do love my zodias rods but they are no NRX+
Lol 45 minutes on dropshot rods. Griff better be there for the 90 minute perfect ned rig rod video.
Exactly my point 💯
👍😁😁
@@jbassc81 I had a few beer when I made the comment lol
@@scottvaughn9565 i was perfectly sober when i made mine.
@@jbassc81 lol I feel ya
Just bury the barb of the drop shot hook into the worm, better action than a rebarb and weedless.
And you won't have to buy two rods lmao
*point of hook, not barb
I betcha the reason you hate Shimano has to do with business and not quality of product.
$249 is too much
A few years ago I was in bad accident. Hit by a train. Not crying or anything but I can only dream of having high end gear. Im just happy to be fishing..🎣
I’ll bet either one of you 100 bucks that I can land just as many fish dropshotting with a 69 dollar favorite white bird.
😂😂😂 kids these days
$650 rod!!!! No thanks!
Don’t watch the video or comment then 😂😂😂 people are so ignorant it’s mind blowing
