    The album kills. Max is full of energy and sounds furious, more aggressive than ever, in great shape. Arthur Rizk played the lead guitars very well. I think Max and Arthur are a great team. The album has all the best elements of black metal, death metal, thrash metal, groove metal. I would love to see an interview you guys do with Max Cavalera.

      Necrotic Nick- Honestly, here lately Max has been on fire with the projects he's involved in. He's really tapped into that love of all the old school stuff that influenced him and he was a part of as well as newer stuff. He's blended it all well here and the mix is just flat out nasty. We've actually interviewed him before if you haven't seen it. It's under our Thralls Roundtable playlist.

    I'm a longtime fan of Soulfly and I happen to think that this new album is their best since Savages. It has stronger riffs and more tribal elements than the past two albums. My favorite songs would be Filth Upon Filth, Rot in Pain, Ancestor, and Spirit Animal.

    • @thrallsofmetal
      @thrallsofmetal  2 года назад +4

      Necrotic Nick- I've been a fan for years and I did drift away for a bit. I wasn't a big fan of Savages but Ritual really got me back into them and this is just fucking intense. Easily one of their most brutal, raw offerings in their entire career. Filth Upon Filth, the title Track and Rot in Pain are way up there for favorites on here.

    After 15 listens to the album :Spirit Animal is a sick song, with dark and evil voices and guitars in Cannibal Corpse Skull full of maggots style,Ecstasy of Gold is another masterpiece with old school Entombed and Sepultura vibe, Ancestors, Totem and The Damage Done are more like old school Obituary, Carcass, Sepultura.
    Rot in Pain is a mix of Morbid Angel, Deicide, Carcass and old Sepultura.
    Filth Upon Filth is a another masterpiece, old school death metal with Obituary vibe and Slayer.
    Scouring The Vile is a fucking killer song, old school Sepultura and Obituary. Superstition is amazing track, old school Sepultura, Arise, BTR 🤘🤘🤘

    Best soulfly album in my opinion along with the first one,dark ages and Prophecy,nice to put some tribal sounds in some of those thrash/groove/obituary sounding songs. Arthur Rizk seems to be a huge Cavalera fanboy to help him make an album like this

    • @thrallsofmetal
      @thrallsofmetal  2 года назад +1

      Necrotic Nick- I thought Ritual was pretty solid but this blows it away. This is just heavy as hell and real call back to the music that Max helped pioneer. Rizk did an awesome job producing and on lead guitars on this one. I wasn't sure what I was going to get here but this ended up being killer from start to finish.

    I had no idea that this would be so good. I've never been a huge fan of anything from Max post-Sepultura, not so much because I dislike it but because I've just not been interested enough to want to dive in properly. I think this may well have changed that. This is fucking phenomenal, and it has already taken a place on my year end list, and I love pretty much everything about it. It's heavy as balls, it grooves hard, the guitar work is superb, drum work is great. It's just brilliant.
    Take a fucking bow Max, he's really been on fire in the past couple of years! 🤘🤘

    • @thrallsofmetal
      @thrallsofmetal  2 года назад

      Necrotic Nick- Honestly, I didn't know what to expect but hearing how vicious Go Ahead and Die was I had a feeling that energy would bleed into Soulfly. It seems Max is much more in touch with his roots here and I think hearing a lot of bands adopt a more old school approach to extreme metal may have really spurred him into action since his early material is a big influence a lot of that sound. This is hands down the most vicious Soulfly has ever sounded. This may end up on my year end list as well. I was jamming it in the car earlier and it sounds fucking fantastic. I'm going to be jamming this one a lot I feel.

    I finally got around to listening to this. I will say that I think Totem is the best album Soulfly has put out since maybe Enslaved, but maybe after multiple listens, it might be better. After Enslaved, I did not like Savages at all (easily my least favorite Soulfly album). Archangel was a nice return to form, and Ritual is fine but I thought it was a step down from Archangel. Totem, wow did Max bring it with this album. This album is really strong. Max sounds extremely inspired and it's chalk full of riffs and cool guitar work.

I expected Totem to be more of the same, but I was surprised at how much I like this album. It's proof Max Cavalera still has it and still has plenty of good material left in the tank. He sounds great and the songs are pretty memorable and hooky. And yeah, it's brutal heavy. Might be one of the heaviest Soulfly albums, tbh. It's in the consideration one of the best albums I heard so far this year.

And then forcibly paste as much of his frantic work as possible in. I wonder if this record will be remembered as a stand out one in say 15 years or if it's going to be just one of the lots of uninteresting records after Dark Ages.

Old school of Floridian death metal, thrash metal, some classic Soulfly triabal 🤘🤘🤘

    Just went a gave Totem a listen.....tgere was NO FAT on this record!! I loved it! Max's guitar tone and vocal was the best it's ever been imo. I love his work on all albums ever released w his name on em, but this really satisfied my hopes/expectations. Went back and gave ritual a listen too. I'm honestly digging Totem and Omen the most right now🤘 both have a strong focus on death metal / thrash metal elements and I think that's where Max really shines. He knows what's heavy and cool and when he chooses to stick with that, we get Totem.

    • @thrallsofmetal
      @thrallsofmetal  2 года назад +3

      Necrotic Nick- Honestly, I didn't detect a bit of fat either outside of some noisy sections where I thought my AC was on the fritz lol. I'm not sure what my expectations were but I had a feeling this would be a very different album for them. Max has been really going hard back to his roots while also checking out a lot of killer new bands too and I think all of that came out on this album. It's just so visceral from start to finish and I love the more death metal moments sprinkled in. This might end up being my favorite Soulfly album in the long run. We'll see.

    One of the best metal album this year, and after Go Ahead And Die another masterpiece from Max and Arthur Rizk.
    Spirit Animal is a sick, evil and dark song, reminds me a lot of old school Cannibal Corpse, Scouring The Vile with John Tardy is a old school of Floridian death metal, old school Sepultura and Obituary, Rot in Pain is a killer song with some Morbid Angel and Deicide vibe, with Schizophrenia and BTR tune, Ecstasy of Gold another blackend death metal, Filth Upon Filth is a another masterpiece in Obituary style, Totem, Ancestors, The Damage Done killer songs, and Superstition 🤘🤘💪💪💪💪🤘🤘

    Totem is a very good album, there is no doubt about that, but I miss Mark Rizzo's Melodic guitar Solos. I think Max Cavalera will suffer without Rizzo. From Prophecy to Ritual, Soulfly Shines and Rizzo's brilliant guitar playing was the main reason for that. Honestly speaking, in the long run, Soulfly cannot fly without Rizzo.

Max has been on top of his game for awhile now i was hearing him talk about the song Ecstacy Of Gold Max said it was heavily influenced by early Entombed Left Hand Path and it shows! that opening riff had me tearing apart my office! as always Max Cavalera is a true fucking LEGEND of Metal and needs to be in those same conversations of the rest of the legendary heavy hitters of the Genre give this man his just due!

    My favorite channel, wow, what a great review guys.
    Album is a beast. Max is in a great shape, he sounds dark and evil, guitars are amazing.
    What a great intro on Spirit Animal. Dark and evil and those riffs reminds me a lot of Cannibal Corpse - Skull full of maggots. Amazing track.
    Instrumental is very good, old school of synth wawe gothic in a style of The Cure or Sisters of Mercy.
    Ecstasy of Gold is a masterpiece, intro is oriental, and then beggins killer riffs, old school Sepultura Morbid Visions, Schizophrenia, black metal and death metal.
    Ancestors is another great song,with some triabal sounds and Obituary vibe. Totem is also very good groove with some triabal, and then beginning fast part, amazing track.
    The Damage Done is also in that style.
    Rot in Pain, wow. The beginning reminds me a lot of Morbid Angel and Deicide, and then Schizophrenia, BTR, with best elements of death metal.
    Filth Upon Filth is in a Obituary style, great song..
    Scouring The Vile feat John Tardy from Obituary is another masterpiece, reminds me a lot of old school Sepultura, Schizophrenia, Arise, BTR and Obituary.
    Superstition is amazing fast track.
