    I just want to say that I have never experienced seeing a beautiful garden such as yours in my life! I live in South Texas on the sandy coast. Very poor soil. All these years, I wondered why I could never grow anything. With your videos I learned so much about the soil and how important that is. I had to watch them over and over to fully comprehend. Last year I did a trial run and tried preparing a small patch in the backyard with the soil composition examples you mention, just rich cow manure and some peat moss. I shocked all my family and myself when out of all my little seedlings, which I killed most of them from lack of knowledge, one melon seedling survived and turned into a huge melon patch! It was so-o beautiful! There were at least 2 huge melons, but that one plant took over the entire section of soil. Only thing is I didn't know when to harvest it. The leaves were still green but some critter got to it. Even so, I took pictures and I am so excited to try again this year!!! Soon as I can purchase your course, I want to learn all I can. You can be sure, I will be a walking advertisement for your great gardening skills if I am able to duplicate and improve on last year. Thank you!!

    • @CharlesDowding1nodig
      @CharlesDowding1nodig  4 года назад

      What a lovely comment, I am touched to be able to help you and others understand soil and plants, and empathise with them.
      That sounds like a watermelon, if so tap it and any hollow sound equals ripeness.
      For Charentais melons, you would smell the wonder. For honeydew, a deep yellow colour.
      Enjoy your harvests this year!

      @@CharlesDowding1nodig You will laugh at my complete lack of knowledge of plants. You see, you have such beautiful vegetables in your garden some I have never seen, let alone tasted. I think it was a melon, but the inside was yellow. Is that still a melon or a squash? I'm not sure. I wish I could show you my picture. But anyway, maybe later I will learn to identify them. Thank you. Love your videos! 🙂 __ Monica.

    • @CharlesDowding1nodig
      @CharlesDowding1nodig  4 года назад +2

      Hi Monica
      Well you are making a start, that is excellent!
      Yellow could be melon or squash but if melon, and any degree of ripeness, there is a lovely scent, then it's sweet to eat.
      I would try melon and watermelon in your climate, sow about April I think, maybe March, check with local gardeners.

    • @monicabct
      @monicabct 4 года назад

      @@CharlesDowding1nodig Thank you for the information. I will try my best to label them somehow as I plant so I might begin to learn what they look like from their leaves onward. I love your calm approach Charles. Thank you for explaining about the pests and how they are no big deal most of the time but rather an indicator of the plant development. and when to harvest. +Anne Fricker Sorry to hear about your probs , Anne . I went over to "No Dig" four years ago and am very pleased with the results , so go for it! The sad news is tho that although it cuts out all that spade work there is still quite a bit of heavy work to do with fork and wheelbarrow.

    • @bostonterriermom
      @bostonterriermom 6 лет назад +6

      Anne Fricker I too have back problems and fibromyalgia... my hubby redid the garden for me this year. Instead of raised beds.. which were very low.. like he has in the video... he put in galvanized steel animal watering throughs with the bottoms cut out. they are 2 ft tall and I can sit on a bucket and work in the garden.... the rest.. soil and approach to gardening I do as Mr. Dowding recommends. With great success.

    I always look around the veg section in the supermarket and although I've not been too impressed with the garlic on offer, several years ago I bought some mini plum tomatoes called Angelle. Impressed with the flavour I split one open and buried the whole thing in a pot and since then I have them every year for free. P S. Rust is everywhere this year, it even got to my bunching onions that up to now never got it!

    Your expression upon tasting your melon... priceless! You share so much knowledge with us, I wanted to share an observation with you my dude! This winter in Baltimore, Maryland my giant red mustard greens started to die off from the frosts. On a whim, I cut the rotting flesh off the plant, leaving the roots, and a small amount of not rotting stem at the base of the plant. Kept it in a low tunnel and it bounced back! Giant trunk replaced the stem, gave enormous amounts of greens until going to seed as we speak. Same tactic and outcome on my poppies! Happy growing, much love and respect!

    Dear Charles , I feel so inspired by your approach to gardening, your crops are so beautiful and the way you communicate is really nice and inspiring.
    I just wanted to point that the lettuce Maravilla de verano is not italian but spanish ;)
    As a lot of produce from Spain is adquired by italians and made it their own... it is important to mention that although italians have a great master in selling themselves, in food, most of their procude is spanish produce, grown and produced in Spain, but packed and labbeled in Italy under their unquestionable "brand".
    Same goes for leather, but this is a different subject,

    Ah good to know. I might be harvesting my pumpkins too early then. The winter ones. Just read a few other comments all very positive about you . I couldn't agree more. I learn so much from your videos.Just the right combination of showing and telling. Thanks so much Charles!

    This was such an informative video! I am going to go check your channel for more videos about planting various crops in succession, throughout the growing season. I was raised to think I could only grow one thing in a spot, for any one season. How silly! I love the way you garden!

    I have just subscribed to your channel & I must say, I fell in love with your garden! And your videos give so much information. I have a small home garden and I am really struggling to keep my plants well since my place is a bit shady (I am from Philippines and I live in an area with lots of bamboos). I am subscribing to lots of gardening channel to get infos and tips. Thanks for sharing yours!
    👍❤️😊

      Can you not clear the area of the bamboo? I have used bamboo for privacy so I know how hard it is to keep under control.But I always kept them around 7 feet tall. I don't know your area just a suggestion. Peace from the USA

    I aspire to be like you sir, your videos are my happy place, they bring a lot of joy into my day❤ Why not bring back some of the music between scenes like in this one? I really liked it! Happy growing!

      So nice of you Steve. This classical music was not so popular at the time, even people were saying, why do you need music? I do like it myself, but it's hard to please everybody!

    I wish my garden looked like that. I envy the mild climate too. Where I live, in Missouri, we had a hot 82 degree Friday followed by storms, and a hard freeze Saturday night.

      Crikey we do not see extremes like that. We had 61F last week, then 29F and that is big for here. Best of luck with your climate and garden.

    I bought one of your books and now I am just waiting for it to arrive in the mail. I just tried to wing your technique today with the tomatoes after watching your youtube programs but I am sure to learn more when I get your book! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge! It was so hard not to dig the beds. Thanks again!

    Ha Ha yes nice melon and it made my mouth water, he he thanks so much. My granddad used to grow lots of melons and water melons in sandy type soil on his sugarcane farm in North Queensland Australia, that brought back lots of lovely memories for me.
