    Since creating this video in November 2019 (also check out: ruclips.net/video/afcLWs0-zhU/видео.html where I compare more RWS decks), thanks to info being shared by subscribers, my interest in the various versions of Pam A, B, C, D etc has been peaked. In this video (and the one linked above), I claim that it looks like something has been added to expand the cards to create a borderless version in the US Games deck. This may not be so. The cards as we know them are likely cropped versions of Pixie's original art and what we see in the US Games version is indeed, not an "add-on" (but a "best guess" at what the original plates must have looked like. It is believed that the original plates and artwork were destroyed in WWII).
    This is a mystery unless the team at US Games actually has some old plates! Somewhere I read that the cropping of the cards happened naturally overtime as the plates began to wear out. So whether or not the US Games borderless version is a "best guess" or not, I have yet to verify this, and I am very curious about this claim and will endeavour to solve this mystery. Here's a link to begin your study if you're interested: www.wopc.co.uk/tarot/rider-waite/rider-waite-early-editions.

    I really love the colours of the Radiant Wise Spirit. But sadly I'm a sucker for the original font too. So I'll most likely go with the Borderless U.S Games version.

    I prefer the Radient Wise deck to look at, but I love the cardstock and Pixie's calligraphy on the borderless RSW deck. If only we could combine them. I also prefer the Radients zoomed effect rather than the sloppy way the other was done to extend the backgrounds or elements.

    I was more drawn to the 'radiant' deck because the images were brought closer. I think the coloring was more easier to see what was happening too, more clarity, if that makes sense.

    I've only just found this video. The Radiant tarot uses the linework of the Pam B; the Centennial uses Pam A linework. In the 1920s or early 30s some of the printing plates had to be re-cut. Unfortunately, some of them were not cut with the same skill as the originals leading to the different faces and clumsy linework on the Pam B.
    Having said that, I prefer the Radiant Wise over the Borderless Smith Waite - the Radiant's colours are really something.

    I started my tarot journey with Modern Witch Tarot, because the traditional deck looks old to me. But surprisingly, I start to appreciate the traditional deck now! I feel that this is the origin of RWS tarot. I become more and more connected to the traditional deck~ I am going to get one for myself, either smith or universal. To me, border and the Pamela writing is important for a traditional RWS deck to bring out the ancient feeling~
    I think some of the radiant images are being stretched, because I noticed that some of the pamela sign was cropped (together with the third bird for the knight of swords).

    thank you... it was only a week ago that I realised that 'radiant' etc weren't just brighter versions of the original, but also redrawn... for a change I love the brighter colours - my all-time favourite is 'The Diamond' from AGM publishers, but in searching world wide, I found only one new deck and it was listed for more than $300 on etsy. When I realised that many 'enhanced' versions have changed the drawings, I began looking at videos of 'unpacking' to see who is doing the clearer and cleaner reproductions - because the colours have such specific meanings and I have come back to the traditional Rider Waite so I can recommence readings with this guidance in mind, I've studied the various prints and learned so much more... I really don't like US games defacing the artwork/card with their logo, but I do think they may have the best original colour reproductions. Your centre pack is the best quality colour. Thanks again.

    Thanks so much for this interesting video! : )
    Ive been a die hard RWS fan for years, in all its incarnations. As coloration is often tied to the symbolism, I feel its important we refer to the older yellow and blue boxes for tradition. For example the lily's in the Magician card are white,which actually means something, where in the Radiant Rider Waite Smith they are a light blue. Or as you mentioned the crown in Temperence being white in the Radiant Wise Spirit, while in most other versions they are gold or yellow. I know these might seem like silly little things, but can make it confusing for beginners who may not have seen a yellow or blue box. The Albano Waite also added skin tones to the Aces years ago. (Lovely deck but too loud for me) Years ago I settled on the Universal Waite as my "good" deck, though some do not like that recolouration either. I've been a big fan of the Centennial edition since it came out, and I recommend it to all the beginners who ask where they should start. Most end up loving the "antique-out- of- the- box" look these cards have. Of course, there are those that hate that one too lol This video was very helpful Thanks for posting it for us : )

    The magician card in smith borderless has 4 box onits table with fire water air cosmos sign while the fifth element is earth represented by the wooden table itself. The six or cups in radient wise spirit has half cut image of the soldier. One of the cups in the 9 of cups in radient wise is half cut. Neverthless both the decks amazing. Radient wise has images which are zoom up and placed in the cards giving them slight 3d effect.

    The good thing about LoScarabeo is that they have stopped putting 800 languages on the cards and started putting them in the LWB
    I like the LS version and the small centennial version, I don't care for the borderless one, as it often looks as though the characters are posing in a fake setting due to the extra empty space. I can imagine them saying "is that good? Can we do the next scene now?"

    To me, the 5 of Wands guy is seeing at least 3 sticks coming right for his head. He's not spaced out, though in a minute he might be out cold...
    Overall, I like the generally smoother shaded coloring of the Radiant much more than the very grainy and flat look of the Centennial coloring, so the occasional little blotches in the Radiant skies don't bother me. The color choices in the Radiant are often far nicer to look at. But I also prefer Pixie's calligraphy over the modern font.
    As you noted, the line drawings on the Centennial are better/crisper than the variable quality of the apparently redrawn Radiant lines. I wish that US Games had enlarged the image to fill the larger card space in the Centennial rather than adding pictorial expansions that often didn't make visual sense.
    Both decks are lovely, and I enjoy using them as a matter of mood for me, as I don't believe the colors selected in either version have any particular meaningful correspondences, at least not in any consistent ways. I really like the borderless presentation of both.

I actually started to miss it when I did not see it for awhile and wanted it. Then I went to the store and there where know more I then had to go quite a distance drive and still came up empty. Finally I had to order one off line . The 🌙 card is my favorite card , the 8 of cups and the two. This to me is definitely a mood setter to me they do change your mood the Hermit card wow. Really helpful thank you am also considering Morgan Greer as love the artwork. Feel as new versions are coming to play am somewhat concerned that pictures depicted in the various decks may be altering the meaning of some of the translation. Eg: a deck comparison of the Hermit. The comment was made that the deck number 2 had the lantern held at a distance which was not favourable as the lantern itself had significant meanings which was lost due to it being depicted further away fro the original. I'm just learning do am I being picky ???

    • @IntegrativeHealingwithSadhana
      @IntegrativeHealingwithSadhana  4 года назад +1

      Hi Cheryl, no you are not being too picky. This is part of the process of tarot study. As you explore more and more decks, looking at these details will inform subtle shifts in meaning AND just the fact that you are asking these questions is illuminating something within your own journey as well.
      To argue where "the original position of the lantern" was is almost impossible to determine. You'd need to be a tarot historian and look at cards from the 17th century and earlier. In the Tarot de Marseille, I thought that the Emperor always faced the past. Recently, I have acquired an old Marseille deck that has him facing the same direction as the Empress. Why deck creators make these changes, we will never know. It could be a reflection of a cultural or religious perspective, a mistake by the woodblock cutter . . . I have one deck that claims the printer printed the woodblocks in reverse.
      Different decks will resonate with you more deeply and that will change from year to year. My advice is just to enjoy the journey. When a guidebook writer says "this is the right way" or "the historically accurate way", I'm quite certain, you will easily find an exception.

Although I rarely take my dirty Pam out for in-person readings anymore (I’d be devastated if something happened to it) and I tend to use different decks for my personal use at home, I’m really glad to have it. Hi, new sub here - I love your channel, your soothing energy, and your detailed reviews ❤ I'm very new to tarot, and I want to get this deck. I believe that one should have Pixie's classic work as their first deck to learn the basics, but I think that the Radiant Wise Spirit is beautiful and still sticks to the classics. The vibrant colours and thicker outlines on the images make every detail pop, which should help me notice more things at once and in the moment. I am not always a fan of the use of grey in the original work - sometimes there is so much grey, and I don't know if that's supposed to convey something or not, it makes things more bland to me. I miss the original font at the bottom, and the Roman numerals at the top of major arcanas.
    I agree that the flesh-toned hands in Aces are a significant change - they make the message more earthly, but I don't think that's too grave as readings are about people, and in the end, in this 3D realm, opportunities end up coming to us via other people. I like the purple clothing on the Angel - again, the bland grey doesn't speak to me, whereas I associate purple with the crown chakra and connecting with the other realm, so that's fitting to me. Maybe the purple lobster suggests the same thing? Connecting with your emotions and your shadow self could be the beginning of a spiritual journey. I also think that purple is associated with loneliness, and that would also fit in with the moon card. Lastly, I laughed at the three of wands bit as I had not even noticed that that was water!!! I remember watching love readings with this card, which would say - hm, your loved one may be overseas, and thinking what in that card suggests that 😂
    There are some differences, however, which I'm not quite sure I like. Firstly, I noticed that the mountains are brown in quite a few of these cards (as opposed to blue). They seem arid and earthly and less dreamy to me, and I am not sure this makes them feel more attainable. Secondly, the pentacles in the three of pentacles are yellowish. I thought the idea about the grey pentacles in this card was about the work product and its high quality mattering more than the money. If so, yellow pentacles would clash with this idea. Lastly, there are leaf-like elements near the bottom of the sword in the ace of swords. I noticed they are green (so maybe leaves?) in the Radiant, but yellow in the other two decks. I interpreted their form, together with their yellow color as suggesting that they might be sparks, as though the sword was being sharpened or is in action, and I liked that "edge" to the meaning of that card, but now I'm confused. As I said, I'm very new to this, so if anyone could help me with this, that would be great.
    Thank you very much for this detailed review, and yes, having all three decks was better than just two. Thank you 🙏❤

    • @IntegrativeHealingwithSadhana
      @IntegrativeHealingwithSadhana  5 лет назад +2

      Thank you for this. Going back to purple . . . there are many associations with this colour and you also may want to reflect on blue + red. Mountains, while representing strength and solidity, also represent obstacles - sometimes insurmountable and I feel that depends on the surrounding cards.
      The pentacle inside the circle is a rich image/symbol, then add colour variation and you may receive subtle nuances. To me the colour of the coin matters less than the surrounding symbols and images.
      The leaves in the ace of swords, again, are full of rich symbolism and I would let your mind wander a bit with this. The leaves do appear in other decks as well, so it is worth your while to contemplate what leaves represent. Have they fallen from the laurel wreath above or are they their own element? Much has been written on these leaves but before you delve into others' opinions, it is worth your while to feel what leaves mean in relation to thought, communication, mind, power, strength/courage, intellect/wisdom of this suit. The energy of the aces is fleeting, like those leaves, it will not be suspended there for long.

    • @FancyDress21
      @FancyDress21 5 лет назад

      @@IntegrativeHealingwithSadhana Thank you so much for this detailed response - so much food for thought! I'll definitely ponder more on the colours and the leaves. I think that in terms of clarity, they might have to fall - either in the sense of uncovering something that was previously covered by them or even in the sense of simplicity (which can bring clarity) - eg, without its leaves, a tree's crown and its overall silhouette would seem simpler, barren of details. Leaves are fleeting too, you're right - they are light and gentle, can be taken up by the wind and easily displaced, and they change with the seasons. If they are from the wreath, then this would suggest that the victory of truth and clarity is a short-lived one, which it tends to be in our world.
      As for the pentacles, I think you're right, their colour isn't the focus here. Nevertheless, I do like the nuance of them blending in for once.
      Lastly, thank you for pointing out that mountains could also be obstacles (not sure but I've heard them being interpreted so in Lenormand too?). It's not that I had completely overlooked that, but for me they are goals to be attained, even if that artainment is fraught with difficulties and sacrifices. I guess it's also a qiestion of the reader's mindset.
      It would be interesting to know your thoughts on how much a reader's own personality and way of seeing things could influence a reading. I know that context matters too, but I feel that each reader does read slightly differently.
      I will give everything much more thought, and I feel so grateful for your guidance and insight. You are very thpughtful and thorough, and it's people like you and Simon from the Hermit's Cave and others that inspired me to lift the tarot curtain for myself. I know I'm in for a loooong journey, but it will be fulfilling as my heart is in it.

    I prefer the Borderless Smith Waite. The colors are original and the calligraphy too. And the line work is from Pam A. This deck tries to be as it was in 1909. The Radiant is just like mod deck.

      I almost forgot. I hate that glossy colors from Radiant I definetly prefer muted colors

    The colors of the radiant wise spirit deck are much better but its too zoomed in and the lines are too thick, the faces are much better on the borderless version and the spaciousness of the boarderless one feels better.

      It's SO interesting to do this kind of exercise on your own as well with similar decks. I had a lot of fun with this video as well: ruclips.net/video/afcLWs0-zhU/видео.html Thanks for watching! 😊

    The radiant wise I have seems kind of less crisp than the original. Also I love the original font, so not a fan of the font they ysed.

      Thanks for watching Elly. It would have been great if Lo Scarabeo used Pixie's art instead of a commercial font on the Radiant Wise. It's a good thing that we have so many versions of the RWS to choose from!

    For the minors, the order does matter lol I prefer this order: cups wands pentacles swords.

      What I have learned from many decks is that the order DOES matter. It is built into the development of the story within the minor arcana (one example is Tarot of the Sidhe). In general though, pentacles coming last makes sense to me as it is the most embodied suit and carries the energy of all the elements.

    Not a fan of the radiant deck. The re color doesn't fit the original style. I like the smith edition more so because the bigger size is ideal for me and it also gives off that aged look/authentic vibe

      Also not a fan of the radiant deck pulling more color on certain images in each card, essentially forcing the eye to go there, unnaturally

    The magician card of the Borderless US Smith waite is really ugly. Lol... but among the 3, i will purchase the extreme right deck. But still it is not the best..

      Hi Vanessa, there are many variations on this deck, perhaps there is another that you'd like better. One of my favs is the Universal.

    The problem with these LO SCARABEO decks with these beautiful robust boxes is the bad quality of the cardstock. There are numerous complaints about this in reviews I read at AMAZON, for example. I agree with these people, because I bought the MILENIUM THOT TAROT, which has this same presentation and cardstock, but it doesn't support a month when we shuffle in the classic side way. The cardboard peels very easily and I don't want a deck to be decorated on my shelf. Some smaller traditional decks that LO SCARABEO manufactures are much better and there is even a version of this RADIANT WISE that today is very difficult to get and comes in a white and blue box with the words. "RWS PAMELA COLMAN SMITH". Do you have or know someone who has an extra box and wants to sell for $ 100? I've looked on several sites and I couldn't. I'm a collector and I'm willing to get that version. What do you think of this observation I made about the role of this RADIANT WISE? Thank you very much and I await your reply.

      Hi Rodrigo. I have seen the version that you are referring to on The Hermit's Cave (Simon). I too, have been looking for it. Should I come across a vendor somewhere, I will remember this comment. Best of luck on your journey to find the original version of "the radiant wise). Thank you for watching 😊
