Fender Jim Root Jazzmaster Demo || A Metal Jazzmaster? How Is This Guitar Not More Popular?!

  • You guys voted for this one on Twitter, and honestly I'm really surprised I like it this much. The Fender Jim Root Signature Jazzmaster is a metal-fied take on a classic shape and it is just awesome. The minimalistic flat black look with brushed chrome EMGs, the low-action, the ebony fingerboard with jumbo frets, all of it just works so well together. It has to be one of my favorite guitars that I've demoed. Returning this one to Sam Ash was pretty sad. And OMGROFLBBQ I played a solo in this one.

      Have you ever done (or ever considered) doing comparisons for guitars? They seem so subjective to me, and there doesn't seem be a way to understand the way they feel from RUclips - but maybe if you played this guitar back to back with a standard or known guitar? Like and A/B switch from this guitar to a well known Epi?.. just thinking out loud (er, in text)

    • @agufish

      +Nothing Lion Interesting idea, though I'm not really sure how it helps solve your "feel" problem

    I love the fact that this guitar isn‘t just a metal guitar as you can see in the demo video of Jim himself on the Fender RUclips chanel. This Jazzmaster has a very smooth even jazzy clean sound too. Its just perfect

    Criticizing ebony fretboards as not being uniform in darkness should be a thing of the past. I recommend that you go watch some videos about ebony and how it is obtained for guitars.....Bob Taylor interviews on the topic would be a good place to start.

    Ebony is never uniformly dark. Much of it is swirly mocha colors. Then, when they build the neck, they use ebony stain to make it more uniform. With the eradication of much of the ebony trees in the world it's becoming more difficult to source "uniform" ebony. Sometimes whole trees will be scrapped because people have come to associate ebony wood with being solid black and don't want blended ebony and the tree becomes useless. Or they will clear a path through hundreds of trees to get to the good tree rendering the others they just knocked down useless.
    Taylor guitars has a pretty cool documentary (on YT) on how they source (and use to source) ebony and how the wood effects the trade.
    Blended ebony looks pretty cool, IMO. My Big Baby Taylor has a blended ebony fretboard and it's very beautiful. I wouldn't "fret" too much about the uniformity of the ebony. Embrace it!

    I read about EMG before I own one. So many bad comment for that brand. After I own a guitar with EMG 81-85, I don't think it's a bad pickup. It sounds incredible with distortion and quite good for clean. The only drawback is I can't get a good overdrive sound from it.

    I ditched Fender and Gibby's years ago but played some cat's Root Tele one night and was ordering it that weekend. It is absolutely my favorite guitar to play and the quality is fantastic. Sold a Nuno N27 and an EC1000 to help ease the sting. I would have never paid 1000 for a MIM guitar much less a TELE, if I had not played one already. The impression it left on me lingered for days until I pulled the trigger and haven't even slightly regretted it. And not to mention the case that comes with it that is a very beautiful one at that. The EC's are great guitars but there is no comparison between the two. Now any other Fender "other than the iconics such as the SRV or Eric Johnson", they have all really dropped in quality. And dont get me started on the mid range Gibby's. I know not everyone will agree but if your on the fence about these Root models, I can vouch for the Tele....

    I own the Jim Root Jazzmaster, Strat and Tele. Really love their tone. I did swap out the pickups on the Strat to BKP's but actually really enjoyed the EMG's and I'm a huge passive guy and Les Paul lover. I highly recommend them. Nice work reviewing as always.

    • @agufish

      Gah so jealous dude. How are the other two compared to the Jazzmaster in terms of feel?

    • @Melonos
      @Melonos 7 лет назад

      I keep the Jazzmaster tuned in C, the Tele in Db with EMG 57/66 and the Strat with BKP Mule/Nailbomb in Eb. So all different sounds. The Jazzmaster is probably my favourite in terms of tone. The Strat has always sounded really natural and Tele has a sharper sound. Feel is similar I reckon.

    • @agufish
      @agufish  7 лет назад

      Honestly with how much I loved the Jazzmaster I might end up buying the Tele if they feel similar and I can find a good deal on a used one. Thanks for the insight dude :)

      Agufish the JR Jazz and Strat are made in the US but the Tele is made in Mexico. So you could argue a slight difference in feel and build quality but I think they're do great. I say get one man!

    • @agufish
      @agufish  5 лет назад +2

      Oof, I’m not sure. That’s a hefty gauge. Cody from Wage War probably uses a similar gauge, but he might have had to drill them out a bit since Fender tuners aren’t usually tasked with massive strings. Let me know how it goes, I’m pretty curious

    Not going to lie I’ve watched your channel for quite some time now and I gotta say this is the first video EVER to make me like the sound of emgs! I personally only love the sound of passive pickups but this video actually change my mind about emg pickups thank you. Anyways big fender fan any chance you would cover a video of fender mustang the shell pink with a pau Ferro fretboard? It’s a nice small body with a short scale neck with two single coil pickups and a hardtail bridge. Also if you had to choose between a Jim root jazzmaster or the Epiphone Matt heafy snowfall 7 string, which would you choose?

    With the tuning....is the guitar primarily designed for drop B tuning ?
    Jim plays it in drop B tuning, but does that restrict the gauge of strings you need to play that low.
    And if you wind it up to standard tuning, how does it feel with a clean tone versus your normal Jazzmaster Fender glassy tone. It would be nice to hear the clean tones and what you think of them.

    I've got this guitar. Also had the tele but parted with it as it didn't live up to the jazzmaster. Great review bro! Should mention this is my only non- singlecut guitar in my collection. only issue i have with it is the neck needs constant adjustment which is a bit frustrating but it doesn't feel like any other guitar that I've ever played so definitely worth checking it out if your thinking about buying one.

    • @agufish
      @agufish  7 лет назад

      Ah for real? I was interested in checking out the tele too. I've heard it felt similar to the Jazzmaster, just cheaper because it's made in Mexico and not the US.

    • @ridz1376
      @ridz1376 7 лет назад

      Agufish it was still a great guitar, different feel in my opinion. Its a 12" radius as opposed to a compound on the jazz and very neck heavy when standing up. It sounded better but it just wasn't for me. I have friends that loved it and i totally get its appeal but i was wanting something else and decided the jazzmaster was tje one to keep. In saying that though i don't really play the jazzmaster much anymore. when i first got it i couldn't put it down but i guess I'm just more comfortable on a singlecut. I'd say if you like the jazzmaster you'll like the tele but it felt very different to me.

    Feels like me and Mr Root are the only ones playing Metal on Jazzmasters XD
    In regards to pickups.. I would rather set out for a pickup combination that can give me a beautiful and rich clean sound, because the distorted sound you can always fiddle with in various ways. Seymour Duncan is the one to go with for me :)
    My HSS strat has a SD Pearly Gates and two Texas Special pickups and I can literally play everything from Mark Knopfler to Mayhem on it :)
    I don't get the same feeling with EMG as they seem to only point to the Metal genre. But hey, I respect those who like them :)

    I have the Strat version what also seems to be kinda no popular. There are like no reviews out there and barely any videos using it. I swapped the 81/60 for a JH set. My fretboard is also not uniform black and I really like it that way! I like to see some grain!

    havent checked this one out yet but I did get a used Fender JR Tele and one of his Strats as well. paid about $800 each. was nice to not pay full price considering how well kept they were used.

    Great review!! I like his other models but have been wanting this one bad. No pro just a I home player with a small collection. Best looking Jazzmaster. What will you do with her, are you gong to keep it?

      If I had the money I would keep it in an instant. Besides my ESP Eclipse-II this is just about my favorite guitar that I've played.

    My only gripe is that while I understand why it's so minimalistic, it's way too minimalistic for it's own good. It's why I don't like the ESP Teles with the EMGs. That said, same with the ESP Teles, just adding a pickguard would turn that opinion on it's head, as I'm a big lover of how Jaguars and Jazzmasters look.

      Covers? They're original songs bruh. For this one I'm using Drop Db, but I use everything from Drop D to Drop A, depending on what sounds best with the riffs.

      Hey dude! I don't play in a band anymore, but I recently did a demo of a 2017 Gibson SG Standard T where I re-did one of my old band's song with our singer for a full band demo mix: ruclips.net/video/nSJ56LU_Qc8/видео.html
