I use three cups for one or a couple of sessions. One for dirty water, one for washing my brush after it’s been in the dirty water cup and one for metallic colours. Brushes get clean quick. The clean and dirty water cups just switch places when I replace the dirty water cup. Minimal effort, great result.

I use two cups, and change the water in the "clean cup" more often.
I'd consider a 3rd for metallic but as I always paint those last, I'm fine just cleaning both cups at the end.

@@derpstick5467that's the best I've used. I got the one that has the cup, top, and puck. It'll hold your current selection of brushes to dry tip up between uses. Separates into 3 pieces for easy deep cleaning. Best bang for your buck. I have a citadel paint cup (I got for free with a lot I bought from ebay) I use for metallics and cleaning the bulk paint out of my airbrushes.

Do you eat yogurt? Those big yogurt pots make excellent temporary water pots. When they grunge up, like all water pots do, you just put them in the recycling.

Pickle jars work great too. All my water "cups " are "recycled " jars or small bottles. One of the best parts is that they are also resealable. When you put the lids on, you have no evaporation loss.

My wife used to have a lot of make up stuff, and she has a massive bottle of makeup brush cleaning solution. So I would assume the "cleaning fluid" would be that solution.
Tbh, I have used that brush cleaning solution before on a painting brush, and it really cleans the brush well. I have a tiny bit that I hold onto so that I can clean my make up brushes after using them.

  • @Copernican
    @Copernican 2 месяца назад +24

Isopropyl is used to sanitise makeup brushes (and the makeup) between clients for professional makeup artists so I imagine they will be fine. I find makeup brushes can be rough handled a lot more than paint brushes, I've washed mine in very hot water with dish soap for instance bashing it against a silicone brush cleaner as if I'm trying to drybrush it and stab it simultaneously and the brushes have survived. I would give cleaning them a try before buying new ones as I'd be surprised if they don't survive regardless of what you do to them in the process.
I should also note I've never spent more than £2 on a single brush, generally they are generally the cheapest ones in Asda (UK's version of Walmart), Boots (Walgreens) or Poundland (Dollar Store) etc.

Love the water toilet and stand by it! Its reduced the clutter on my desk a bit and also is less messy than 2 or 3 seperate cups that can also potentially be knocked over too. Its a great time reducer as well, as I dont have to consistently run back and forth cleaning cups throughout a paint session if Im messing around with multiple colors and/or metallics. Great investment and is the only thing aside from standard cups I would recommend investing money in

And am one of the people that uses different water for metallic and non-netallic paint. For a long time I thought it was a myth. Then I was painting a Gundam model kit with Tamiya Acrylic paint, one of their golds, and the Walmart craft paints. Tamiya acrylics are absolutely loaded with the mica particles, and absolutely do the thing. And those particles don't really seem to sink in water the way they do with other acrylic paints. I think it's because Tamiya acrylics are partially solvent based.

Glad to see the brush rinser get a fair shake. I got one a yearish ago and the lid design was terrible and leaked badly. I had to get it sealed underwater but once I did it was fine. The spring started to weaken so it was slowly leaking. I ordered two more, one of the same style and a different one. The duplicate seals much better. The new style has several minor issues, most notably the drain piece moves if you aren't careful, but it was only $6 so not worth returning.
It has been a huge thing for removing barriers to start painting. As you mention about it sitting it lasts quite a long time so I rarely have to worry about rinse water when I want to paint.

Krydrufi thing - I bought one and it works great. Love it. I bought it for hobby night with my gaming friends when my full home studio setup is not available and space is limited. I just bought the cheapest version which doesn't have that bottom paint compartment thing - which I believe is for watercolor artists like pan watercolors.
Upside down water tank cleaner - I saw it and bought one from Amazon and while it is a great idea, it is very cheaply made and a plastic tab on mine broke on day 1. I returned it and never got another - if it was higher quality I would love it, but I don't feel like it will last long.

I did use a "refilling waterpot" (other brand) but it had problems with refilling the waterpot when I pushed the button. But I could have used it wrong, as it looked like the water in the water resevoir could not flow into the brushcleaning part as it was hold back by a vacuum (the water could not run out, as no air could get in).
I do have the Krydrufi system. I use the two black water pots and their rubber mats. I also use the holder they came in (where you can place the black waterpots) for storing large brushes and tools. I do have a complete hobby room so I do not use the whole system for traveling. The wetpalette however fits perfectly in my Paint Case 2 (Frontier Wargaming) and works a bit better than their wetpalette (I do have to use my own bakingpaper, ast the wetpalette paper of both companies are so so). The rest of the Krydufi system I use for organizing small bits.
In my Paint Case 2, I also have the folding water cups and brushies (rubber thingies to clean the brissles) from Gamenvy (Love them). The watercups from the Krydrufi system do also fit in there (the black ones, not the whole colored double cup thingie), but do use more room. I did use to put paint pots or other supplies in them, but you need to lay the pots down, so that was not really usefull - and then Gamenvy came with their folding waterpots. Problem solved.

I have one of the those brush cleaners worth the upside down water bottle. I use it all the time now. Two things that I would talk about is that the bottle and dirty water tanks should be half again as big for my use. Second, the seal in the bottom of the reservoir is made of rubber to make a good seal but it gets dirty and the paint collects on it breaking the seal draining the tank so you will have to clean that piece once and a while.
Over all it's well worth the price! Thx of the videos.

I've always wonder about the brush cleaner and if you're using tiny brushes, I think it would be ok. I think I could repurpose a cat water feeder that uses a two liter bottle and some other supplies to make one that would work with larger brushes. I think it's a pretty good idea, just a little too small and might be fun to make a more full-sized version. I kind of do this when I'm cleaning brushes at the sink with cup. For some reason it works better to clean a brush in a small cup than a sink full of water and I'm running water into the cup and dumping frequently. The confined space seems to really get the paint out of the brush. I also put one of those silicone brush scrubbers in the bottom of the cup. That Army Painter cup might be a good rinse cup for me.

Agreed on the first one, seems extraordinary in extra complexity with a name reminding me of all the things I need at IKEA. I got a few plastic tumbler glasses (one for normal paint & another for metallic), paper towels for the wet brushes and a coffee cup for dry brushes.
Item 2 seems like what I've seen at coffee shops but it's just a fancy sink to keep the water inside moving and cleaner. Looks useful but easier to have a small pot nearby to dump bad water & plastic bottle nearby to refill the water.
Thanks for the video on makeup brushes. Been cleaning with either isopropyl alcohol or shampoo & since my brushes are from Dollar tree (plus more from their underrated craft section), I don't mind replacing them.

My better half gave me one of those brush cleaners/ water changers for my birthday back in July. Honestly, it has been a big help in improving my painting. I used to use three glass jam jars to hold water for my brushes. One to clean metallic, one for non-metallic, and one to wet the brush. I always used to overload my brushes, because they would be dry so quickly, and my minis would end up with thick coats of paint. But now, I tend to keep my brushes wetter, more often, due to this gizmo, so my coats are thinner, and my loaded brushes go much further. That’s a win, in my books.
As for the makeup brush cleaner, try it with warm (not boiling) water, and some dishwashing liquid, for your paint brushes. I’ve had varying degrees of success this way. Also, depending on the type of brush holder your device has, you can always snip some areas away, to fit your wider brushes.
    Cheers,

As someone who does use makeup brushes to apply makeup, I clean mine with a little bit of Dawn dish washing soap. A few drops in the palm of my hand, apply to brush bristles, massage the soap into the bristles and rinse. Repeat as necessary until clean. For makeup I don't wear a glove. For paint I usually wear a glove. Uncle Atom if you are worried about the glue I dry mine with either a rag or paper towel and then pop it into a brush holder to completely dry. Like regular paint brushes you want to keep water out of the ferrule.

I saw the Krydrufi over on Mandy's Minis a while back. It's pretty neat if you are starting out, I think, but for those of us with established setups, it may be difficult to change everything so abruptly. "Cleaning fluid" may very well mean dishwashing liquid. An old historical painter gave me a tip long ago to put a tiny bit in water (to break the surface tension) when making your own washes, and I've since started putting it in my paint water as well.

Shampoo & conditioner for the make-up brushes. That is how I clean my make-up brushes for make up & though I havent tried for my dry brushing make-up brushes, given that acrylics are water base, the shampoo should work as well. I tend to just use my old make-up brushes once they become distorted from use, an ready supply if you will. Though I am not that hard on them, but they are always around and about. And they are always easy to get inexpensive ones for dry brushing. Hope it helps, please let us know the results if you try it. Only takes a couple drops of shampoo & conditioner.

Your paint water toilet looks better than mine. I got the one from Green Stuff World and it works great, but you have to have it perfectly level otherwise it can start to dribble out a side and drain onto your desk when you're not looking. I have found it great for keeping cross contamination with metal paints from occurring, so I think it was worth it. A better one like the one you have here would probably be in my top 10 hobby tool items.

IPA works just fine on natural hair brushes. Doesn't damage them, just wash them out after, and then condition them again with brush soap. If anything, IPA makes your brushes last a lot longer by getting all the paint out if normal cleaning doesnt.

The water toilet appears to be a repurposed water feeder for cats and doesn't seem to solve the problem of needing to get out of your chair to empty out dirty water - it just delays needing to empty the...septic tank. And that Mad Max t-shirt is straight fire, as the kids say, and is the most essential piece of kit in this video!

With my house reform slowly progressing I would need a portable hobby space. Badly. This doesn't look like it would do it, however. I just don't know why but if you think the amount of paints you usually need I would rather try to make a small tote with: 1 paint water cup, paint brush case, wet palette + top 20 colors in a small cardboard box. Limited space is a big problem for this hobby, no matter how much you try 😢

The makeup brush washer. Junk. It cleans powder brushes but liquid makeup? Fuggetaboutit. I don’t have that exact one, but similar. Useless. I actually use a miniature paint cleaner (fill it and it has ridges) for my makeup and I have one for my paints.

    • @JPGotrokkits

It was in fact Green Stuff World. They had a bog standard one, that you could get anywhere, but paid to have their logo embossed on the side (which is probably an insert in the mold) then claimed 'patent' and tried suing other sellers of the basic (non-logo embossed) ones.
The item was already being sold, and GSW was late to the party, theirs having the logo on it, but otherwise indistinguishable from the mass produced in China one that was already for sale.
GSW is a thoroughly reprehensible company run by people that, when called out, use the "oh we're just a small family-owned company, have mercy" line. They've stolen art, improperly struck content creators, claimed ownership of things that were made by other people and commonly available elsewhere, and I will never knowingly purchase any of their products.
