People who are so insistent upon a perfect vegetable or fruit has never grown a single one.
City people waste, not county people. We eat leftovers. We grow our own vegetables so don't have unreasonable or uneducated expectations about them being perfect.
Food scraps either go into the compost pile which helps our soil grow big nutritious fruits and vegetables, or it goes to the animals that we later butcher and eat. Zero food waste.
City people should start community gardens with community composting piles. On that situation you'd probably just want non meat items, but that's a useful way to get rid of peelings, trimmings, etc. I don't know ablout how much grass clippings etc the city generates but those can also go in the compost pile. Animal dung goes in it too.
Everyone complains about and warns of how our soil is disappearing but nobody takes practical steps to do anything about it. We don't have poor soil. We've spent years building good soil. We let the rain go into the earth rather than down drains into waste water management systems. We have septic tanks which puts waste back into the earth, as it's been done since tbe first living creature on this earth lived and produced waste, which is our own personal waste water management system. These are the things that build fertile soil.
