  • This video is part of a series I've done on how I built my Fender Custom Shop 1962 style heavy relic Stratocaster. This particular video focuses on how I installed the pickguard. Some basics on the guitar below:
    Fender mint green 62 pickguard
    Fender aged white covers and knobs
    Fender American Vintage Reissue Tremolo
    John Benson 63 hand-wound pickups
    Grease bucket tone controls
    Treble bleed circuit on volume knob
    Back tone tied to bridge pickup
    Gotoh vintage style (Kluson) tuners
    TUSQ nut
    Musikraft neck

    After drilling the first hole , if alignment is good then insert a screw , go to the other side of the pickguard and drill and insert screw if all looks good .
    Now the rest can be drilled with no worries mate,

    Hey Nathan, I just discovered your channel and I'm really impressed with your work on guitars. I was actually searching a video to see how to drill my p-bass body, since its holes don't fit with normal pickguards. I just fear to mess up with the old holes, ask myself if I have to fill them and how, and also what kind of driller and diameter I will have to use. Any tips from you are welcome. Keep your DIY videos coming, you're really gifted.

      Ety Ramone, thanks for the kind words! I think all Fenders (guitar & bass) use a #6 screw, which is about 1/8" in diameter. I used a 5/64" drill bit, but a 3/32" would work as well. You just want to choose a drill bit that is slightly smaller in diameter than your screw. For filling old holes, you can use a toothpick & wood glue. It's really easy & works well. And it will be hidden under the pickguard.

      @@NathanSink Many thanks for your answers, some details probably seem common sense to you but they do really help (like thinking that the hole as to me slighty smaller than the screw :') ). I hope you will show us your next guitar builds !

    I want to put in a humbucker ring on my fender. Do you know what size drill bit I need for the corner humbucker ring holes by any chance?

    I just ordered new cast saddles for my 1996 Squier but seeing the stamped saddles I'm kinda wishing I'd gone with them.

      Michael Tyers totally understand. Here's the solution: buy the stamped ones too & then get another guitar to put them on! Just kidding. Any excuse to get another guitar though, right? 😀

    What is the size of the screws for the pickguard?

    • @NathanSink

      Not sure, but Google says #6 x 1/2". 😊

      I just got my Mary Kay swamp ash body from Warmouth. I think I’m going to start with a pin drill by hand, then finish with a drill press to make them perpendicular to the body. But I’m terrified of the paint spider webbing. Wish me luck.

    Wondering if I should buy an 11 hole pickguard knowing that my squire bullet is an 8 hole. Will it fit? Will the holes line up and then i wouls just need to drill the other 3 holes into my guitar? Thanks

    • @NathanSink
      @NathanSink  Год назад +2

      I can’t say for sure, but I’m fairly confident you’ll have alignment issues with the holes. Worse case I think you could use the toothpick trick to fill the holes & re-drill. You basically take a toothpick, apply some wood glue, & then break it off on the hole. Then you let it dry (& sand flush if needed). At that point you can re-drill your holes.
      And in fact you only really need to do that if a hole is super close to one of the new holes you need.
      Hope that makes sense.

      Conley Flake glad to help! Unfortunately there's always a chance. It helps to use painters tape at the spots you're drilling.

  • @annabelletoone8267
    @annabelletoone8267 4 года назад

    Is the tape on the drill marking how long the screws are so you don't go too far down, or is it just an estimation?

    • @NathanSink
      @NathanSink  4 года назад

      Annabelle Toone yes, the tape is marking the length of the screws. 👍🏻

    I'm curious, what did you lubricate the screws with? And when you drill as pull the bit out, do you leave it as is or put in reverse?

    • @NathanSink
      @NathanSink  4 года назад

      Mr Grinch I used regular candle wax for the lubricant (@3:27) & for the drill bit (@3:07), I just keep it going forward as I pull the bit out.
