  • Only 2.5 hours by car from Tokyo, Minobusan is home to one of the three main head temples of Japanese Buddhism. Here, the solemn beauty and warmth of real Japan endures. With a population of around 10,000, Minobu, in today’s Yamanashi Prefecture, is the site of Kuonji, the principle temple of Nichiren Shu Buddhism that was founded during the Kamakura period (1185-1333). There are many temples around Kuonji that, as shukubo, or temple lodgings, take in worshipers from all over the country. A shukubo is a temple that accommodates overnight guests, mostly priests and devotees. Currently, there are 33 shukubo in Minobusan. This religious center is now attracting visitors from overseas.
It is thanks to Junko Higuchi, who runs Kakurinbo, a 550-year-old shukubo, that Minobu is now on the international tourist map.
