One of the main reasons they wear the glove is that the ball comes off the bat at around 100 mph and for the guys in the infield those would break your hand if you caught it bare
An infielder was actually killed when struck by a batted ball back in the late 19th century. The batted ball is generally faster than the pitch, which of course can be dangerous itself.
One thing about baseball you might want to look into is the differences between stadiums. Because of those differences the rules are actually slightly different depending on where you are playing. We call them ground rules. Many stadiums have unique ways of earning an automatic double, such as by the ball hitting certain catwalks above the field
Another kind of video you might like similar to impressive catches are outfield assists in Baseball. Basically the outfielder being able to throw a runner out trying to advance to the next base. Some of the guys in the outfield have insane throwing strength and can usually throw as hard as some of the elite velocity pitchers in the game
A lot of baseball players wear necklaces because it’s cool and it’s an oddly satisfying feeling when your running and having it bounce off of your chest. There’s also a saying look good feel good play good and there is definitely a level of confidence that comes with wearing a chain
You commented that the batter must be furious when someone makes an amazing catch like the ones here. More often than not the batter is either stunned or impressed, because the batters are also playing fielding positions so they just imagine what it must have required to make these amazing catches. Sometimes the batter (usually when the team is behind or if the batter has a bad attitude) will get angry, but it happens left often than you might think. Usually anger is only shown for bad umpire calls, getting struck out, or someone else doing something unsportsmanlike (such as a pitcher intentionally throwing a dangerous pitch at a batter they don't like). Honestly usually the angriest person on a baseball team is the coach. 😆
most people wear jewelry because it just looks nice, but it is illegal for pitchers. pitchers used to use especially rings to scuff the ball and increase spin rate and movement on the ball so they banned pitchers from wearing jewelry
There are much better catches than these. I would say only about two of the ones in the video stack up to REALLY amazing catches. I guess I'm spoiled because I've been watching baseball my entire life!
When the ball bounces over a wall, it's called a "ground rule double". The batter goes to second and any runners on bases move up one or more bases if necessary to make room for the batter to get to second base.
The one thing about not using gloves in Cricket to ponder is how often in Cricket do you need to field a ball moving at or around 100mph. 95 to 103 is not uncommon for pitchers in MLB and a significant number of 3rd basemen and Short Stop's can and do throw across the diamond to first base in the 110-115 mph at release range and Oneil Cruz, I understand, can break 120 mph.
Most players wear necklaces because it’s not really a contact sport so the likelihood it’ll get snatched off is highly unlikely. The better players wear the fancier necklaces with the diamonds. Ronald Acuna Jr (video on him is needed) once broke his chain and his diamonds fell on to the field and caused a delay.
you wear a glove in baseball when fielding simply because of how fast the ball is coming at you. Try having something hit your hand at 80mph. It’s obviously slowed since it left the bat, but it’s still cruising!
Field play in Cricket is beside the point. You know you never see catches like this on a cricket pitch. You see better plays in the stands in baseball than on the field in cricket.
5 star is usually reserved to high school football or basketball prospects. Especially football. There are about 30-35 kids in the nation rated 5 star and Georgia, Alabama and Ohio St. get most of them. We follow the recruiting closely especially this time of year.
These are all amazing and what’s funny is I would say I’ve seen videos with even better catches. You should check out some amazing infield plays although I do prefer the outfield catches. They are ridiculous. I played outfield and running full speed and diving for the ball is so much fun!
Just realize this is just great catches from one season of Baseball, and only outfielders. If you want to get your mind blown, look up something like *_Most amazing baseball catches of all time._* Some of the footage will be grainy, but it's well worth a look.
If the ball bounces and then goes over the wall it is called a ground rule double and the batter and any runner on base automatically advances 2 bases.
Funny you should mention catching the ball with your bare hands. There was a player with San Francisco (the team is called the "Giants") back in the day named Kevin Mitchell. One of the most famous things he ever did was run to catch a ball, but the ball was above him on the side away from his glove. He reached up and caught it with his bare hand...
First of all, I’m impressed of your baseball knowledge! You are correct that if the ball hits the ground then bounces over, it’s usually a ground rule double. Same goes for someone, other than a player, touching a “live ball”. This video was good but it heavily favored the American League. I would definitely check out highlights from 2022 postseason games!
It's always a tradeoff between great defensive players and their offensive output. Sometimes you chance upon a great offensive player who is also a great defensive player. Baseball is odd.
5:59 to be flashy, fashion, style, drip. plenty of players wear catholic rosary beads. ive seen muslim prayer bead bracelets as well. its more of a professional thing too. rules on jewelry are actually quite strict for ANY sport in college or under
if the ball bounces off the ground out of play then it is an automatic double
The official term is "Ground Rule Double".
Chatwin...never mind what I said.
Also is the ball bounces off a player and bounces over the wall without hitting the ground it's a Homerun.
@@ThEmB0nEz Jose Canseco can confirm
One of the main reasons they wear the glove is that the ball comes off the bat at around 100 mph and for the guys in the infield those would break your hand if you caught it bare
Also a batted ball has a great deal of spin a glove makes it much easier to catch.
An infielder was actually killed when struck by a batted ball back in the late 19th century. The batted ball is generally faster than the pitch, which of course can be dangerous itself.

"Kiermeir doing Kiermeir things". Best line from an Oriole announcer, who politely asked if he could please leave the AL EAST lol.
You have to do best catches of all time. There’s so much more to see!

You should react to catches that involve robbing home runs, AKA they catch it over the wall.

Them not including Brandon Nimmo's catch vs the Dodgers in this video is criminal 🤣
There’s also some amazing catch compilations of Japanese baseball

No exploration of baseball is complete without checking out a couple videos and a couple highlight reels on Shohei Ohtani.

Dude you know more about baseball than you think. Whenever you guess about something you’re usually dead on lol

7:47 you should check out Jackie Bradley Defensive Highlights. He’s maybe the greatest defensive center fielder I’ve seen in my lifetime
3:34 that would be a ground rule double, automatically sending batter to 2nd base
They also wear gloves bc the ball is rocketing off the bat at over 100mph easily
3:35 It's called a ground-rule double, and all runners advance 2 bases
Field play in Cricket is beside the point. You know you never see catches like this on a cricket pitch. You see better plays in the stands in baseball than on the field in cricket.
In the US, catching without a glove is Chicago 16” softball.
5 star is usually reserved to high school football or basketball prospects. Especially football. There are about 30-35 kids in the nation rated 5 star and Georgia, Alabama and Ohio St. get most of them. We follow the recruiting closely especially this time of year.
The necklaces are fine to wear bc it’s not really a contact sport plus it looks really cool esp if it’s diamond chains
These are all amazing and what’s funny is I would say I’ve seen videos with even better catches.

catching with a baseball glove is kind of like swimming with scuba fins.
You have to check out the javy baez /pirates play of 2021 the weirdest play in MLB history.

If it touches the ground and bounces over the fence it's a ground rule double. Everybody (batter and any runners) advance 2 bases.
get you some infield highlights them boys throw the leather around
Good thing those outfield walls are padded, eh?
They wear necklace bc non-contact sport and they are super rich...
if it bounces and goes over the fence it’s called a ground-rule double

I would definitely check out highlights from 2022 postseason games!
Also, the outfield is way larger than it seems (some larger than others) & that’s another reason why these catches are great
They also wear gloves because the balls leaving the bat at speeds of 100plus miles per hour
It's always a tradeoff between great defensive players and their offensive output. Sometimes you chance upon a great offensive player who is also a great defensive player. Baseball is odd.
if you want to see some insane outfield catches watch a highlight reel of kevin pillar.
You’d break your hand without a glove in baseball
Watch Yardon Alverez home runs....
This doesn't count as a catch but its still fun.

Don't pay attention to the "Distance Needed" and "Opportunity Time" statistics on the screen. It's pure nonsense that nobody cares about.
They both relate to what was needed for the catch. It’s not nonsense by definition then
You're very wrong.
