    if hikaru can win 2300s with botez gambit I don't think it matters how dubious our aggressive gambits are until 2300. (which most of us will never reach). the moves are there to be found, we just need to know our losing openings well enough to win more than we lose. after a year of playing stafford every time I still don't have a feeling like 'I know everything', so it must be much worse for my opponents who only get it once in a blue moon.
    I mean we could play the soundest top level opening every single time and we'll still lose ~half of the games. might just as well have some fun instead.

      Dubious openings are not dubious against dubious opponents. I'm a dubious player and so are my opponents. So, I don't feel bad about playing dubious openings.

    I have played the Traxler Attack many times and usually win because my opponent doesn't know what to do. The few times I lose is usually when I give up a bunch of material and, instead of getting a mating attack, I settle for winning my opponent's queen - a common thing that happens in a Traxler-style attack. But! If you've given up a rook, bishop and several pawns, winning your opponent's queen really is not necessarily a winning thing in itself. You've given up a queen's worth of material to win your opponent's queen.

    I wouldn't say it's good but I knew before you brought up the database that it WINS.
    In the 70s and early 80s, all my scholastic chess opponents were taught the fried liver to exploit 'fish' and I dug into "Modern Chess Openings" and found Traxler (Wilkes-Barr). Pretty much the only Black prep that I did as a student player and it destroyed Experts and Masters alike with its traps and forced draws.

      The traxler is good after nxf7, this line isn't. After the Bxf2 kxf2 ne4+ kg1 qh4 g3 nxg3 white has qe1+ since we've given the e5 pawn unlike the traxler and white is completely winning. Black doesn't really have any tricks here and this line is fairly forced after Bxf2

    As someone who plays the traxler, this is fascinating. I wonder how much of this I can incorporate. Without those pawns blocking the center, I can see how this could be more deadly.

    for a lot of these lines you say "black picks up the queen and its easy" but in most of them white has 3 or even 4 pieces for the queen. I feel the analysis has to keep going at that point

    • @DavidEmerling79
      @DavidEmerling79 2 года назад +3

      That is absolutely correct. In these type of sacrificial attacks, winning the queen is often not enough to win. I have experienced this several times when playing the Traxler. I win my opponent's queen and, for a moment, feel pretty good about myself. Then I realize I had to give up a rook, knight and two pawns to get there. There is still a lot of game to be played and both players can still go wrong.

    • @witheringhs7766
      @witheringhs7766 Год назад +1

      almost every time he said that there is basically a forced mate following right after, the queen was the only thing stopping it to begin with.

    Jonathan explores a lot of unreliable gambits, but they are great exercises to get a sense of when and how to attack--and to get a sense of danger and how to stay away from it.

    In that crazy position, my gut feeling was bishop e6. If takes then knight recaptures and you still have 3 attackers on g2. If something else then the knight is no longer protected and the queen is still pinned. But I'm probably missing something important

    Traxler is not actually dubious even when white takes with the bishop, the position is still completely playable and dangerous, and the advantage which engine claims is there only if u play like stockfish for 20 moves, so dont call traxler dubious or bad, it could be not the best response to the italian but it is a respected sound counterattack.

    • @ΠαναγιώτηςΦρεντζάς
      @ΠαναγιώτηςΦρεντζάς 2 года назад

      The Traxler is bad IF white takes with the bishop, or plays 5.d4!
      5.Nxf7? is a lemon which drops all of white's advantage.

      @@ΠαναγιώτηςΦρεντζάς d4 is literally joy for me if someones play that, and if they take with an bishop, brooo the attacking position which arises from this variation is just awesome and black even at ultra engine level like alphazero style, gets full compensation for his pawn
