if hikaru can win 2300s with botez gambit I don't think it matters how dubious our aggressive gambits are until 2300. (which most of us will never reach). the moves are there to be found, we just need to know our losing openings well enough to win more than we lose. after a year of playing stafford every time I still don't have a feeling like 'I know everything', so it must be much worse for my opponents who only get it once in a blue moon. I mean we could play the soundest top level opening every single time and we'll still lose ~half of the games. might just as well have some fun instead.
Dubious openings are not dubious against dubious opponents. I'm a dubious player and so are my opponents. So, I don't feel bad about playing dubious openings.

Hey Jonathan, i am following your videos woth great pleasure. I came to a couple of your classes in STL in 2016 when i was there for a research program in WashU. You were such a nice, sweet person. Thanks a lot for everything, i hope you have a very nice life!
I have played the Traxler Attack many times and usually win because my opponent doesn't know what to do. The few times I lose is usually when I give up a bunch of material and, instead of getting a mating attack, I settle for winning my opponent's queen - a common thing that happens in a Traxler-style attack. But! If you've given up a rook, bishop and several pawns, winning your opponent's queen really is not necessarily a winning thing in itself. You've given up a queen's worth of material to win your opponent's queen.
I wouldn't say it's good but I knew before you brought up the database that it WINS. In the 70s and early 80s, all my scholastic chess opponents were taught the fried liver to exploit 'fish' and I dug into "Modern Chess Openings" and found Traxler (Wilkes-Barr). Pretty much the only Black prep that I did as a student player and it destroyed Experts and Masters alike with its traps and forced draws.
The traxler is good after nxf7, this line isn't. After the Bxf2 kxf2 ne4+ kg1 qh4 g3 nxg3 white has qe1+ since we've given the e5 pawn unlike the traxler and white is completely winning. Black doesn't really have any tricks here and this line is fairly forced after Bxf2
As someone who plays the traxler, this is fascinating. I wonder how much of this I can incorporate. Without those pawns blocking the center, I can see how this could be more deadly.
for a lot of these lines you say "black picks up the queen and its easy" but in most of them white has 3 or even 4 pieces for the queen. I feel the analysis has to keep going at that point
That is absolutely correct. In these type of sacrificial attacks, winning the queen is often not enough to win. I have experienced this several times when playing the Traxler. I win my opponent's queen and, for a moment, feel pretty good about myself. Then I realize I had to give up a rook, knight and two pawns to get there. There is still a lot of game to be played and both players can still go wrong.
Jonathan explores a lot of unreliable gambits, but they are great exercises to get a sense of when and how to attack--and to get a sense of danger and how to stay away from it.
Me: Ugh, I can't break through 2000! Maybe I should work on my fundamentals and practice some sound opening theory. Also me: Traxler AND Stafford at the same time!? This is my new main opening.
In that crazy position, my gut feeling was bishop e6. If takes then knight recaptures and you still have 3 attackers on g2. If something else then the knight is no longer protected and the queen is still pinned. But I'm probably missing something important
Jonathan you're a ledge, so who are the 'ron's who haven't subbed man? Do these people think it's ok for you to do this sht for free? Keep on laughing man, love ya bro.
What is wrong with 5.Bxf7+ Kf8 6.Nxc6 dxc6 7.Bh5 which stops that ...Bg4 stuff? Black can pick one of the two pawns back, but this doesn't look enough with a king at f8.
You must Never Threaten to Ban Eric again or it"s OH NO my Knight, and Goodbye to your Queen! You reaction in that Video was priceless & I've always wanted to thank you for the Belly Laugh! :) .. Please don't tell me that this comment has gotten me Banned! .. Love YA!
Traxler is not actually dubious even when white takes with the bishop, the position is still completely playable and dangerous, and the advantage which engine claims is there only if u play like stockfish for 20 moves, so dont call traxler dubious or bad, it could be not the best response to the italian but it is a respected sound counterattack.
@@ΠαναγιώτηςΦρεντζάς d4 is literally joy for me if someones play that, and if they take with an bishop, brooo the attacking position which arises from this variation is just awesome and black even at ultra engine level like alphazero style, gets full compensation for his pawn

@@DavidEmerling79 Now THAT is a super slogan !! Thank you.
I am going to print it on a T-shirt ( with attribution of course 😄)
Murphy played what today are meme openings yet he was one of the best chess players ever lol. This gambit also has destroyed a bunch of titled players

Both names are great

NASTY opening, great explanation. Loved this video man, thanks for making it. Good chess coach.

I don't know who Busch and Gass were but I can tell you one thing: they sure played some wild chess
very cool that you gave this guy credits!!
I try every gambit u analyse and suggest.
I've following you since ur urusov gambit video from saint Louis chess club.
I'm biggest fan of yours🙂
no cap same here, and it was one of the first and few vids i ever watched from them.
I wouldn't say it's good but I knew before you brought up the database that it WINS.

20:32 lmao the "just castle" killed me xD
That long castle in the very end of the video made me laugh
As someone who plays the traxler, this is fascinating. I wonder how much of this I can incorporate. Without those pawns blocking the center, I can see how this could be more deadly.
My life has changed since you showed me the Orthoshnapp, so I'm down for most gambits you present (with disclaimers)
Got a really nice smothered mate with one of your lines. Thank you so much, Jonathan! Really exciting gambit:)
1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Bc5 { C40 King's Pawn Game: Busch-Gass Gambit } 3. Bc4 Nf6 4. Nxe5 Nc6 5. Nxf7 Bxf2+ 6. Kf1 Qe7 7. Nxh8 d5 8. Bxd5 Bg4 9. Kxf2 Bxd1 10. Rxd1 Ng4+ 11. Kg1 Qc5+ 12. d4 Nxd4 13. Nc3 Nf3+ 14. Kh1 Qg1+ 15. Rxg1 Nf2# { Black wins by checkmate. } 0-1
I love the Traxler! I win 70% of games if 5.Nxf7 and 62% of games overall. It's such a good opening.
oh yeah the Straxler

almost every time he said that there is basically a forced mate following right after, the queen was the only thing stopping it to begin with.
Jonathan explores a lot of unreliable gambits, but they are great exercises to get a sense of when and how to attack--and to get a sense of danger and how to stay away from it.
Just not taking the queen at the end was so incredible
I really want to watch this "live" after seeing the theory behind it
I love these videos; they're like putting fresh chilli on your supper.
They make excellent desserts!!
at 9:35 what if Kxf2, i see it has only been played a couple of times.
Me: Ugh, I can't break through 2000! Maybe I should work on my fundamentals and practice some sound opening theory.

Holy Smokes! This is the best.
11:16 i giggled, then started beating myself up for my immaturity. little did i know, 11:20
"Do not play this opening! Okay, let me continue..." 😆

i was caught in this garbage yesterday ;__;
Man I'm glad I don't play these e4 e5 positions
Oh ffs dude, it hurts! Eye-talian?! Srsly? Ever heard anyone claim ancestry from *eye*-tallee?

The Traxler is bad IF white takes with the bishop, or plays 5.d4!
5.Nxf7? is a lemon which drops all of white's advantage.
