All the continuity in their world just shattered when someone comes in temporarily and makes a major plot change to their world. Not a larper, but I can understand how they could be frustrated.

you say "only dealing 10hp" but if He was dealing more damage, like the 20hp from earlier, then the bird would die by half as many blows. The higher the hp the lower the damage dealt. Its ridiculous, but Hamish assigning double hp to the magical giant bird makes sense.
Wouldn't make sense if the plot chick wasnt in charge. Think of it as dungeons and dragons. You have your player characters, and you have your dungeon master. Dungeon masters job is to create an interactable and plot driven world for the player characters. She is their live action dungeon master.
I mean, I get the appeal, but you can do that on your own with some friends in the woods. LARP needs someone in control of the situation to make sure the rules are followed, that no one is doing something that'll get someone hurt, and to give players a purpose. A bunch of people just sorta standing around in costume isn't much different than just hanging out with your friends, just a bit stranger since one guy is wearing nothing but a wolf pelt and another is clad in full plate armor. Plot gives people a reason to play, to do things, to grow as characters, and to share an experience. And, while the plot might be simple, like "go into this cave and fetch a lost item, maybe fight some vampires," it's the people that choose to go do that thing that change the experience. They wouldn't be there without the plot existing in the first place. It would be like trying to read a story where nothing happens, just a bunch of characters milling about.
Killing the bird will make that story one of the most unpredictable and memorable plots they ever had.
