I'm an emotional cripple, but even I was taken aback by the sheer calming beauty of this song and the opening animation. The ending song is catchy too, always made me excited to watch the next episode.
When you realize the OP is from Deedlit's perspective. One of the last lines is about Deedlit waking up, implying the song up until that point was from her dreaming. Of course she was dreaming, because she's reliving memories of Parn, who would've grown old and died while Deedlit stayed young. Yet even as she awakens from her dream, the song ends with a line about her still being captive to the chains of Parn's heart. It's a profoundly simple way of demonstrating just how in love Deedlit is for Parn. She REALLY fell for this dude right from the start.
Oh yeah, the line about the morning sun freeing her. Now it makes sense. She was living her dream of being in love with Parn, but now only has her memories and actual dreams of him. That offers more context to the song and makes it all the more bittersweet.

This art style kind of reminds me of Jim Henson's movies Labyrinth and Dark Crystal. Also the intro to the song gives me chills. Reminds me of my childhood growing up watching VHS of studio ghibli films like: Howl's moving Castle, Spirit Away, Ponyo, Princess Mononoka, and Cat returns. I miss that feeling of happiness.
Record of Lodoss War has an amazingly intricate artstyle in general. Such a great influence narratively and artistically on Japanese sword and sorcery media even today.

This series got me into anime. One thing lead to another, now it's been almost over twenty years and it took me directly to my literary career and a life I wouldn't trade for anything. It's amazing how well the story holds up even after so long.

Too many 'fantasy' anime are actually 'fantasy videogame' anime and/or isekai. I know this is heavily tabletop inspired, but it isn't bombarding me with rules and classes to impress me. Its just a bunch of fantasy characters on an adventure.

Don’t do it any more is just nuts, remember shows like record and berserk Where not main stream at the time….i had to go to sun cost video to see them in the early 90 along with vampire hunter d ghost I. The shell and ninja scroll on vhs. Same deal today. Ironically……..anime do NOT do music like this and they did for the late 80s and 90s anymore u have to look to video games…….for good music like this..
I really like the japanese version...until it gets to the chorus. She sounds stretched. This english version goes the route of a duet in those parts, and it works so much better. Definitely one of my most favorite anime themes of all time. I could watch the original Lodoss War OVA every day, especially after that wonderful Blu-ray transfer.

The english version of this song is just better and not by a bit but we are talking leaps and bounds. There's a despair and yearning melted with love. She's just an overall better vocalist.
They do kind of "cheat" a little by adding things that aren't in the original version, such as reverb and harmonies. Whereas in the original, she just has her voice alone with little to no added effects. What I find awesome though is that rather than one version being better than the other (cause really, that's subjective to each and every one's taste), it instead gives us two different moods. The Japanese one is softer, melancholic, and contemplative; you can feel that she's just lost in her love for whomever she's singing to. While the English one is more romantic and theatrical, almost like an opera song, which makes it more of a passionate declaration of love than it's softer counterpart. And quite honestly I think that, THAT, is the beauty of covers. Everyone interprets songs differently based on their own feelings and experiences, and there is no "one true best version".
Record Of Lodoss / Lodoss Tou Senki. A true Gem of Hand Written Anime unlike Most Modern CG Anime with tons of Fab Service and Bland Character Development.

They do kind of "cheat" a little by adding things that aren't in the original version, such as reverb and harmonies. Whereas in the original, she just has her voice alone with little to no added effects.
What I find awesome though is that rather than one version being better than the other (cause really, that's subjective to each and every one's taste), it instead gives us two different moods. The Japanese one is softer, melancholic, and contemplative; you can feel that she's just lost in her love for whomever she's singing to. While the English one is more romantic and theatrical, almost like an opera song, which makes it more of a passionate declaration of love than it's softer counterpart.
And quite honestly I think that, THAT, is the beauty of covers. Everyone interprets songs differently based on their own feelings and experiences, and there is no "one true best version".
