That's so cool. I definitely want to get one of these to control my Moog. If you ever need to open your EWI up again, please make a video that shows which pins you connected for the CV control.
Thanks a lot for this video. I always wondered about the compatibility of this EWI 4000 with a modular setup. Very informative video and pertinent points covered, specially the Mod detail. Cheerios ;)
Thank you for reviewing EWI from a synth-nerd perspective. There's a big lack of that kind of reviews. And I see even the same sadness about weak MIDI ranges of CCV-s. There's a little hope that AKAI can provide the software update to let EWI output 14bit MIDI CC (not 0-127 but 0-16383). And even if it becomes a reality, it's still not a panacea, because more bit-depth is yet nothing without a dramatically increased sample rate. But you solve this problem by modifying. Respect!
The endorphin.es Shuttle Control midi-cv interfaces slews midi steps, so that one might solve the problem as well. Not cheap but hey, nothing modular is.
Amazing video, you make me want to get into sound design. I'm currently experiencing troubles running my ewi 4000s into my ableton 11 suite. I can get my breath sensor to work and my pitch bend, but I also get polyphonies and I always get more than 1 midi note input. I want to run my Ewi into soft synths before getting more into building my own module or synth. If you have any feedback about that I would appreciate it and thanks again for the video.
So it seems from the research I've done the ewi is great for synth sounds to be played like wind instruments. My question is can it be used as a midi controller to play the different sounds in your DAW? That way if I find a more crisp sounding wind instrument through a sound pack on my daw I could play it on the ewi and have that slightly more authentic wind instrument sound? Also if I play the ewi as a controller for my daw will it capture the breath input and all the different pitches?
Will Noto make sure all your adjustments are set right. On the 4000s they’re the trimmer knobs at the top. Instructions are in the manual. Mis adjustments can cause you to be out of tune or have notes that don’t shut off, or constant glide. If I’d read the manual first I’d have saved myself a lot of headaches
Nice review, but it seems like you're only working with the internal preset sounds. If you get the Patchman Music soundbank made specifically for the 4000s model, it'll sound so much better.
So I’m thinking of picking up and Ewi 5000 as a synthesizer. Say I get it. How good are the preset synth sounds? I’m not a tech geek so I know literally nothing about electronics and I can’t build a module... thing that you have or anything close to it.
Great video. I love your breath control hack. I’ve been struggling to control an analogue synth, getting all sorts of crackles due to the quantised breadth control levels. I’d always thought it was a problem with the synth or midi/cv converter, but based on what you say it is probably just aliasing in the sound. Any links to more info on the hack? I have both an EWI USB and 5000.
I'll probably do a write up on it soon with documentation. The breath signals directly from the EWI are 0-3v inverted and most analog synth gear expects at least 5v so I made a scale and invert circuit that processes the raw voltage from the EWI.
this is awesome! i'm interested in the CV mod but do you know if it is possible on the cheaper EWI USB? would rather not take the risk buying and possibly accidentally bricking a EWI4000 😂
Hot damn! That cv mod is insanely awesome - seeing only to your sound!
You are a genius, sir. Great engineer, great musician. Nice work!
Underrated video brotha this was mad in depth and resourceful 👌

here's a post I did with instructions for the mod www.danielrieramusic.com/blog/2019/11/1/hacking-the-ewi4000s-for-direct-analog-breath-cv-out

Verry NICE, i think i will use my EWI 5000 the same way with my Modula Setup.... Thanx for that Demo, Impressive !
nice video, answered a number of questions I had.

You’re a wizard dude. Just read the run down of how you hacked the EWI 🤯🤯
Really nice. Thank you.
Hey Daniel! Do you have any recommendations on other Eurorack voices to use with the EWI?
Wonderful video

ive got an ewi and have been working to learn modular synthesis, I would love to know more about your setup.
Whats something you would tell someone who just got an Ewi Today♥ you wish you heard when you first got it

Do you recommend the USB midi controller version?

You just need a pair of headphones to start.
Daniel Riera And can it be plugged into a guitar amp?
@@abedinsubashi yes, although a keyboard amp will sound better
Daniel Riera ok great!

badass
Bad ASS. Do you have to bite it like a clarinet ?
No it's a simple embouchure more like a recorder
I INTERESTING LEARING AKAI EWI 4000S BASIC
NICE VIDEO INTRODUCE FOR AKAI EWI 4000S
YES I WANT STUDY NOW TO LEARING AKAI EWI 4000S
GOOD VIDEO INTRODUCE AKAI EWI 4000S FOR BASIC
I HAVE AKAI EWI 4000S. I DONT'T KNOW HOW TO USE IT. I MEANS THE BASIC
If you have any sax or woodwind instrument experience the fingerings will mostly translate. All you need is a pair of headphones to start practicing
