getting local guides can help! i know someone who has been to almost every country and afghanistan and venezuela are among their favorites, and they went very recently too. not saying the risk is worth it for everyone, but you can have a good time anywhere with enough planning and a host that can help you stay safe

I, as a British person, would like to visit Iran/Persia and probably could. For me to set foot in modern USA you would have to pay me £2 million cash in advance and I would use some of that to head soonest to Canada then come home by sea.

Met an arms dealer on a flight to DC. He goes to all these horrible places, but he said he doesn’t have any issues. No, he doesn't work for the government. He's a freelancer, so to speak. I flew to DC every week from LA for years. I met some amazing people with amazing (and scary as hell) jobs.
