➡️ I consider TesseracT to be one of the most unique-sounding bands in the modern metal scene, and a large part of that comes from the heartbeat-like bass grooves from Amos Williams. After discovering this group in 2010, and falling in love, I later had the privilege to support them on tour a few years later. As the years went on, I admittedly missed out on a few of their latest releases, and today I'm hearing "Juno" from their 2018 release "Sonder" for the first time. In this video, I watch Amos effortlessly crush through this epic track and break down his slap bass techniques and writing approach, how his thumb technique slowly evolves through the song with more intensity (to double-thump), his incredible fretting-hand efficiency, his subtle use of muting during slap lines, and plenty of commentary on how TesseracT are the kings of dynamics and atmosphere in their brilliant compositions.

I saw TesseracT, Skyharbor,
And The Contortionist in
San Francisco in 2015.
Absolutely Incredible Show!!
I was there 🙃
I was there too!! Drove up from Santa Cruz when I was in school there.
Skyharbor 💯🔥
I saw them open for Devy before the first album came out #flex
He (Mos) is basically a Jedi Master with a bass guitar.
Bro looks like he’s literally one with The Force whenever you see him perform.
Love these guys, gonna see them live soon and im so excited
My favorite band of all time
Have you heard of “Karnivool” very much in the Tesseract prog metal style but with their very own distinct sound. “Set Fire to the Hive” is awesome with a massive bass tone!
+1 to this. Not the track you mentioned but a cool playthrough: ruclips.net/video/nm7e9zN9eLc/видео.html
or Goliath...
Awesome reaction, love that song. I do have the exact same AFR4 bass BTW... wish I could play as good as Amos 😅
Thanks so much! I actually refrained from commenting on the bass because I had no idea what it was and didn’t want to start guessing 😅 - didn’t really look familiar while watching. I’ll look those up…
EDIT: KINDA thought it was an Ibanez sorta headstock, but I’ve truly never seen this model before. Interesting!!
A dude in a Facebook group just mentioned these guys; I'd heard of the band but had never listened before. Yeah, this is pretty good.
They’re the real deal, man. So much love for them, and they occupy such a unique corner of the metal world. 💙
I’ll have to look into them sounds really cool! Mark you remind me of myself when I start to lock deep into the bass and everything else happening, earbuds get pushed in, eyes close and head tilts lol
i watch your channel because im learning to play bass. thank you for introducing me to this band. i wiil be listening to them now.
Great story man... Ive been playing for 30+ years and never got there wrong area of country i guess.... Much love always
been trying for several days to crack this song, the polymeter in the main riff really cracks my skull lmao
Nice- glad you did these guys
Lord Amos on the bass.
Aw man. Tesseract and AAL are out here living in 3023
would you do a video for the whole new album war of being from them? is awesome!!!
It's interesting how he switches from slapping from the top of the strings to slapping through the strings. He does both techniques in the same riff. He might even have done it differently in separate takes when they were shooting the video and the editing makes him look like he is switching during the riff, I'm not sure.
Myself I was using both techniques in different situations, and I am trying to re-learn my riffs using only the thumb-through technique. But I am not sure if it is worth it, maybe I should just continue to use both.
Love your vids. Another great player is Brandon griffin from the zenith passage.
I love the band and Amos but his fingers remind of the facehugger in Alien movie
Incredible musicianship.. but what is that bass he is playing... Very progressive setup... Love it.. another great video.. thanks for sharing .. inspires me more. So smooth..
Let's say Amos was the reason why I blew a hole in my wallet and got an Affirma in 2020 😅😂
Love your breakdowns! Polaris is one of my all time favourite albums as a whole yet it took me many listens to appreciate it. War of Being is the same, took 10+ listens to realise how amazing it is. I humbly request you check it out at least. much love from ireland
Nothing shits in a musical punch bowl quite like cheese ball prog vocals
What vocal style do you prefer? Dan can do it all, really. I agree with you actually but TesseracT was never in that category for me.
Absolutely one of my favorite newer bands! Love his tone for sure and all of their albums. Another similar band I love is The Contortionist from my hometown of Indianapolis, IN. Jordan Eberhardt is another bass player that is great in this genre!
Oh man, absolutely. I saw The Contortionist live in 2012 just before Jonathan left the band and they were incredible. It was before Jordan joined the band but Chris was flawless, they all were actually. I was obsessed with Exoplanet and Intrinsic, such amazing songwriting.
You live in indy? I just moved from indy, the contortionist are amazing. Chilled with them a few times. Do you play?
Saw you go over BTBAM a bit ago and now you're doing TesseracT, you've earned a sub
🥹❤️🙏🏼
Massive fan of Tesseract. Happy to see you covering them. Keep up the great channel!
Sorry for my earlier comment. you did a great review
So stoked to see you doing reactions! I would put you up there with danbriggs as one of my favorite bassists, and have become so even more, after seeing how much in common we have in musical taste and experience!
I hung out with Travis bc I was friends with entheos when he joined them for the dillinger tour. You guys made that band! the migration, and v were masterpieces. Your bass lines are so beautifully written and executed.
Are you ever available for lessons? I would love to buy some time in the future if you are ever free!
Two of my favourite bass players at the mo are named Amos! Williams and Heller. Anyway - he makes it look so easy but I have smallish hands and the stretches are KILLER! I've really gotta pick and choose which riffs to learn 😂😅. So glad I got to see these guys live, in my top 3 for sure!
Tilt your arm and forearm and wrist in or out depending on what way you are trying to stretch on the board that will help a ton
@@bassimprovjams3772 Even Amos has has been having trouble with his hands playing this stuff. It's just really difficult material.
I'd like to suggest Haken's Carousel, the bassist Conner Green has a playthough on YT and the sound of that Dingwall bass is so *chef's kiss* !
Plus the man has magnificent hair and beard!
Please!
I 2nd this! I’ve requested Conner already hopefully we get it soon, I’m sure he has a ton of requests written down,
Very soon! That’s the one I’m doing, too! Stay tuned 🤘🏼😇
@@LowEndUniversity 🤘😁
Amos is incredible. I got into Tesseract around the time they released One and he has remained one of my favorite bass players. I know it feels pretentious as fuck to use this adjective, but his playing is so... "elegant". I got the same old Warwick Corvette model he used to play way back then recently, been loving that bass so so so much. I might just sell all my guitars and focus on bass at this point haha.
Can't wait to see Tesseract in early 2024 :)
Wow, almost requested Amos but bit my tongue since I had already requested Dan a few weeks ago. Thanks for reading my mind , lol. Great analysis and content as always, Mark!
Haha, thanks for watching man! I do be reading minds… 🔮💫
I’ve been recommending him too!
Love his bass, great tone, and beautiful look
Got to check out Amos playthrough of "King"
Woohoo! Been hoping you’d check out Amos. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and pointing out some intricacies of his playing.
They’ve been one of my favorite bands since One (and even before that, fell silent). Stoked for their new album this year!
That bass looks rad!
to find the feel of this song just pay attention to the left foot 16th note count on the hi hats and the snare hits and then the accenting that they do starts to make a bit more sense, at least it helps me
That guys really good at bass. Really great band too
Saw tesseract, cloud kicker, and intronaut in 2014. Awesome bands
That was an amazing bill, three of my faves!
Let's all give Mark a major shoutout, his bassline's are the main reason i play the bass, very underrated. Awesome video❤
7:18 Engineer here. We're still sort of in the loudness wars, but more dynamic mixes have become less "jarring" to more listeners. A good amount of it (I would assume) comes from streaming services normalizing volume without compressing everything so heavily.
Hey there! I've always beeen fascinated by this topic, especially when you zoom out and see its evolution/demise over the last 30 years. It made me really study the mechanics of mastering, why perceived loudness differs from actual loudness, and all sorts of stuff. A revered audio engineer told me he gave up on fighting it because of streaming normalization now, implying he doesn't have to worry about it anymore.
I saw y'all on that tour! At the Pawn Shop in Edmonton, Alberta with Anciients. I remember you almost weren't able to play due to some technical issues, and Tesseract was super late because they were held up by wildlife on the highway from Jasper. Despite all of that, it was an awesome show! All the bands looked really happy to be there. Fun sidenote: that was also the show I forgot my earplugs and ended up getting tinnitus lol. Worth it!
Wow!! Love it! I vaaaaaguely remember that show now that you mentioned the wildlife (😅), but don’t recall the technical issues. Wonder if it was my amp? I did have some issues with it the following tour with Kindo a month later.
Dang man, protect those ears. Hope you still aren’t dealing with that these days from that show 🙁
@@LowEndUniversity I am, but only because I was a dummy and forgot my hearing protection. It's mild anyway. 🙉
Cool you were in scale the summit!
🙏🏼☺️
I'm seeing these guys for the third time live in January, cannot wait!
Amos has been my favourite bassist for a long time. Everything he does just fits the music perfectly, nothing that doesn't need to be there is included.
His playthrough of April off their first album is such a good watch. His right-hand work is immaculate in that track with these muted strums and popping. Plus it's just a beautiful song!
please check Adagio - Frank Hermanny please 🙏
Mos is an unbelievably skilled player and such a nice dude.
"Juno" was the name of my late dog, died at 12, taken by cancer. Idk the song but yeah, I had to stop and listen and learn!
Oh wow, that’s tough. I lost my cat recently and it’s a hurt like no other when it happens. This is a fantastic band if you like metal and highly suggest checking out more!
Singer reminds me of the singer from "Story of the Year".
at least at that "no serenity, never compromise verse"
what tuning are they inn ?
Maybe C Standard? I did notice the open A string was an F. My best guess!
@@LowEndUniversity Thank you
Amos has played a 5 string bass for the longest time, usually tuned to Bb or Drop A. The new four string basses he's been using are all tuned in weird tunings, almost open tunings.
You are not in the same league as Amos
Thanks Mike!
I fell in love with Amos's playing the second I heard it. One is still one of my top "must listen to" metal albums.
NEW JOB FOR A COWBOY..
NUCLEAR POWER TRIO-
RED SCARE BEAR STARE, insane instrumental
Thought about new JFAC!! What’s a good bass song on it so far?
