Don't know if the movie had time to address it but the main reason Temujin did so well bringing people to his side was he treated his subordinates like family and promoted based on merit. Something that basically no one else had ever considered doing in their society before. People of talent and ability who weren't senior enough to be big shots in other tribes realised Temujin was the only option.
yep, most strange quickly rising and than falling empires in history had this, a great leader decide to use ability instead of money and power and corruption as the way to advance, and it works, to be abandoned by the next generation almost immediately, leading to the fall of the empire.
@@thorin1045 Temujin's two best generals were Subutai and Jebe. Subutai was the son of a blacksmith while Jebe was Temujin's former enemy.
But because of Temujin's habit of meritocracy, both of them rose to frame and Glory. Jebe conquered the Western Liao Empire within a few years while Subutai became of the greatest General in History, winning more than 60 pitched battles.
I think even if it didn´t get addressed, it´s still kinda implied by the way Temujin shared the loots and treated Borte´s son and daughter.

there is nothing respectable or commendable about this bloke
The other commenter is correct. I haven't seen the film but Genghis Khan was a ruthless leader who committed countless atrocities: countless wars, raping, pillaging etc. Millions of people died due to his actions; civilizations were destroyed. The most famous atrocity attributed to him is the execution of every single citizen in Nishapur.
Yeah, never mind he was a killer of millions and a rapist of thousands, he was kind to a couple of women, how sweet is that.
He accepted the son but his questionable heritage would lead to hella problems when talks of inheritance came up

Temujin, The Great Genghis Khan is a merciful King of mongol. If you're not against him, you should be with him and he'll take care of your entire family like his own. That's what a true king is all about.

What the movie doesn't show is that some time after their tribe abandoned them, Temujin aka Chinggis Khan shot an arrow at his half brother Behter for not sharing the fish they caught. It makes sense that Temujin was furious at his brother for being selfish when their family was barely getting by.
No pun intended.

Here in the US we are taught that he was a brilliant and gifted leader. Of course we are taught that he and all Mongoloan warriors could fight fiercely, but much more importance is placed on the fact that he could command an army better than any other man on earth. We are taught that he was a brilliant strategist. He had so many rumors spread that anyone who went up against them just KNEW they were outnumbered, outclassed, and outsmarted, so most actually joined up peacefully before any actual fight was needed.

The second half of the movie seems exaggerated. If anyone is interested, you can read the "Secret history of Mongols" which is probably the most accurate historic literacy.

@@carlmagrath6389 yep. There is even speculations that 'the secret history of Mongols' was written by a Chinese historian.
So accurate. They left out all the rape and murder he did though.
chinggis ghengis organized his army by tens, hundreds, and thousands of soldiers. This in turn helped to efficiently take over entire cities. They're is also records of the mongols employing biological warfare of sorts in the sense they catapulted bodies infected with the black plague upon their enemies. They also had a punishment system of sorts in which if there was a deserter said deserter's entire unit (of ten, hundreds, or even thousands) of soldiers were killed to set an example of loyalty. Now, this is just my takeaway from AP World history but feel free to correct me.
The Romans did something similar. In the tens.. the short straw holder was beaten to death by the other 9!
If a centurion ( in charge of a 100) deserted or goofed off he was crucified or worse!!
Choosing a partner by legs is in Norse mythology too. There's a story where a giantess called Skadi could choose a god as her husband, but only by looking at their legs. She choose the one with the cleanest legs, thinking it was Baldur's, the handsomest of the gods. Unfortunately the legs belonged to Njord the water god. Who wasn't as handsome as Baldur.
at least water god legs are cleaner

From a mongolian perspective, this movie is heavily fictionalized. But still shows how good diplomat and great leader Chingis khan was despite still globally being portrayed as a horrendous conqueror.
Indeed he was a great leader. His portrayal as horrendous person is completely western view. No one else in history built his empire based on meritocracy. Other emperors and kings assigned postions of power to their kith and kin though they were inept. The unbiased people will always remember him for his novel ideas and magnificence.

Seems pretty well made and close to Mongolian stepp life and culture, obviously the movie takes some liberties when it comes to how the story unfolds, especially since we don't actually know many details about Dschingis Khan's early life, except how it's been told by later Khans. There is a point to be made though, that is that temujin spent quite some time in the jurchen tengut kingdom, not necessarily as a prisoner as shown in the movie, but presumably as a soldier moving up the ranks, because when he returns from his time with the jurchens, he's already a powerful military leader with some following.

What happened at the end seems a bit similar to what Agnes Jurati proposed to the Borg Queen in Picard S02. To not assimilate by force but by choice. Rather than killing the captured soldiers he offered them a place in his army, though I wonder what the alternative were.
Borg's ultimate downfall was no mercy but in providing mercy Agnes postulated subjects would fight harder, because they chose to, not had to.
Wild to find a Star Trek Picard reference in here. But, you are accurate. Did you finish season 2? We see the outcome of the "new" Borg. A meritocratic Borg in the 23rd Century is interesting. Yet, Chingis Haan 's 13th Century values are quite old. The ancient Egyptian Old Kingdom experimented with meritocracy when it employed the genius polymath commoner Imhotep in their unique theocratic system 4,689 years ago. Did you know this commoner was deified to be a God in 525 BCE? The best sourced beginning point for meritocracy is with China's Confucius in 500 BCE - curiously around the same time.
