    Ha`oli i ka pu`uwai. Mahalo. Thank you for speaking your truth. Hilo will always be my Hawaiian home town. Although my health has forced me to move away, my heart will always be there in the forest of Puna. I send my deepest aloha to all the families and know Pele has needed to stretch her legs and go walking. My only regret is that i cannot be there to help those in need. Tears of Aloha wash my face for those who feel loss fore I feel your pain. Malama pono.

    This is so true. As a species of life on this planet we have detached ourselves from true reality and forgotten or disregarded the fact that the earth is a living entity.

    There are lava flow maps that show the level of danger you are in if you buy property in certain areas on Hawaii Island. The higher the level of danger, usually the cheaper the property. So people absolutely know the risk they’re taking buying property there. So they buy a cheap property, at high risk, and now want the state to step into save them? These people have no idea what they’re talking about. You can’t just divert lava flow without so many potential consequences. This is why Hawaiians think the way we do. When Hawaii was colonized, it was said that we had manipulated almost every square foot of land that could be manipulated. But we never messed with Pele. We weren’t that lolo.

      Not to mention trying to divert a freaking volcano is insane to begin with, you can indeed make it worse or divert to flow to a location that does more harm then original. But its always the fools with a sub-human level of intelligence wanting something done

      Refer to Captain Cooks Journals. Kanaka ecological genius, above any other he ever came across. Then, of course, he said kanaka would make perfect slaves. He was sure wrong on that account, but he had to please his investors corporate futures. The rest is history.

    As a member of an ancient Hawaiian family (kauahiokaluaopeleomalamalama) we appreciate and respect Pele. Whether you want to call it acts of a volcano (scientific), the acts of Pele (cultural) and/or the acts of God (religious/spiritual), the disruption of lives, destruction of personal land, homes, and livelihoods is imminent. This is the threat all those who chose to live in this area knew when they relocated themselves and my heart goes out to all who are under great stress wondering how their lives will be negatively impacted. BTW, I hope to return to Hawai’i in four years to reside in Puna. Yes, I too will take my chances to live with Pele. But let it be known that attempts to manipulate nature with diversion tactics will not produce 100% positive results on one end with 0% negative effects on the other. Had mankinds diversion techniques of yesterday been successful - such would have be deployed today. The only 100% successful diversion will be with the total cooperation of the source - Puʻu ʻŌʻō. Two further comments if I may: 1.) Developers of today’s Puna, Pahoa, Kapoho and Kalapana knew that the rapid-growth of their communities was in need of alternate means of egress. Yet, nothing over the decades produced a secondary highway. 2.) Coincidentally, some of Pele’s targets in the past have had something to do with misuse and mismanagement of the land she created. So let us think back at what we did or allow to draw her attention to strike. Is it the defunct fracking platform and the land associated with that project which is precious to Hawaiians that is between the flow’s leading front and Kaohe Homesteads? Or is Pele’s target the fully operational Puna Geothermal Venture facility wedged between communities? Time will only tell. Mālama pono!

    • @eklice
      @eklice 10 лет назад +1

      I live in lower Puna and I actively spoke out against the fracking and industrialization of the area. the geothermal projects here were halted not because people had respect for the Island or were concerned about the "impacts", but simply because of insurance issues and such things, because nobody can insure their property against possible damage from fracking activity. it is about the people living at a place and not who Pele might be raging against right now. following that logic the leaders here would be guilty two times over, because then Pele would actually have to hunt down targets that threaten the place, because the government couldn't protect its people to begin with. so why let the people pay the price both times?

      Aloha Kills Alone ,
      Wow, what a hypocrite you are. You point one finger and call someone judgmental when it was your foul-mouthed judgmental statement that started it. I sincerely hope you live on the mainland... because if you are on the islands, ESPECIALLY the Big Island, I'd truly love to see you talk like that to a Kanaka Maoli's face instead of acting the computer warrior. (rolls eyes while laughing).
      Oh... and say something like "Fuck you" as a response will prove my point and make this old Aunty laugh even harder. ;-D

    • @randiddle68
      @randiddle68 9 лет назад +5

      Kills alone is typical of colonial thinking; i want what I want and everyone else be damned. Guess what dummy??? This is one group of natives that wont be fooled by promises of good will and diseased blankets. If you lose your home, you just lost your home. You can't make the world think like you....

    • @randiddle68
      @randiddle68 9 лет назад +4

      Wow, Richard H., while eloquently stated, the point is this (and we can differon opinions.), the native Hawaiians have a right to have what THEY! believe as the embodiment of one THEIR gods to go undisturbed. The transplants have as much say so in this situation as they would if a hurricane were to threaten the island. And the moral fable you speak of is one of many that describe to a tee, how the modern "European" thinks. Those who do not share their point of view, must be savage and must be assimilated or destroyed. Since you seem to be a philosopher and history buff, I sumbit for you reading pleasure, the fabled accounts of the how colonists from England ceded from the crown, how they slaughtered and raped the native people of America, enslaved the African (claiming they were 3/5ths human) and continue the time-honored tradition of invading any country they choose with impunity and occupy it without permission and tell me you woyld still say they are fables and not a modus operandi for entire race of people. Again, if a person has bought a house on an island, they should live with the consequences, good or bad. You do not have the right to dictate what people believe in WHEN YOU ARE A GUEST!!!!!!!!!!

    Hey I'm so thankful for all the open minded people from all over the world! 1st let just say if you were to move somewhere would you do research on the place? some @ leas,t like why they call Hawaii Volcanoes National Park a volcano park?,might be one of your questions! and why is land so cheap here? is it because there's a volcanoe under my house ??? or maybe you ask why the natives all still live here with all they know about the past ?lets just say you did ask one of these. Would you be shocked when a lava flow comes down to your part of the woods ? I live here because I am so tired of greed , power, and growth. The people here understand love and radiate love even for the undeserving , unloving grouchy selfish prideful individuals that use this place! This is my home if God wants me to move and grow and change so be it . I live here because when it gets to worldly and we forget and start getting cocky and forget who God is as creator we get a rude awakening !!! and are reminded of what really matters LOVE for each other aloha ike kahi ike kahi ,for this place malama Aina, for change, growth, and acceptance. Divert that!!!

    The Hawaii Volcano Squad, the people living on The Big Island know there is an ACTIVE volcano. You knew what zone you were purchasing land in, and that while yes some zones are safer than others there is no guarantee that ANY zone is safe.If you did not know then shame on YOU for not researching the land/area you choose to inhabit.

    • @epicxel
      @epicxel 10 лет назад

      ya we all KNOW that but looking at the situation given to us and time you cant tell me you cant divert this flow as slow moving as this one as a leak(im not talking about the moon :)), i can see if it was a raging river of lava coming to the town in days thats one thing in that no one can control that but its NOT, govt officials wont tell you but puna is a "poor" area and they weigh checks and balances in that "is this area worth spending money in worth saving?", or is it more cost effective to let it just burn and see what happens" so obviously they dont think the benefit of saving outweighs the risk so to be politically correct they label it as "cultural sensitive and no guarantees", NEWS FLASH nothing in life is guarantee. Looking at Oahu the communities bring in lot of money for the state, and if this was on oahu like i said they would be diverting because the benefit weighs out the risk in that too much money was invested there to see it go to waste like this. Like i said before its not the lava at this point its the officials in charge who you pay taxes for that make it into a more disastrous thing then what it potentially could be preventable which i think needs addressing.

      Theres an old saying: if theirs a WILL there is a way

    • @leimanaang
      @leimanaang 10 лет назад +2

      epicxel I understand your points but disagree. Lets look at population and Island size for Oahu and Hawaii. Oahu population 953,207 and 597 square miles , Hawaii population 148,677 and 4,028 square miles (all of this info from 2010). Oahu is way more densely populated with WAY less land. Where exactly would Oahu divert the lava to? Diverting lava is not an exact science and experience has shown it is not with out cost or grief to someone, why should another patch of land/person/ etc... suffer because you do not want to? Move out of the way and rebuild. It's selfish to expect a natural disaster not to affect you! There may be a will and a way to divert it but if it effects someone else after it is diverted then what? Will your conscious be clear because YOU are no longer in danger?

    • @epicxel
      @epicxel 10 лет назад +1

      leimanaang diverting to affect the least amount of people to compensate for rather than having whole communities wiped out in doing nothing. hate to say it but its "choosing lesser of the two evils." and you think its just that easy to rebuild, if you ever worked for an insurance company they cover you now but they also can drop you later down the road for profit. and if the govt declares this a disaster zone afterword insurance companies tend to raise their price exponentially, do you live in puna? easy for you to say on the side lines when not in the game IF thats the case. "you only live life once" and i deal with ALL the cards available and doable to me for myself and others in moving FORWARD. lol of course i expect natural disasters to affect me like its affecting me now, and to judge me and label me as selfish when you know nothing about me and i know nothing about you over the internet

    • @leimanaang
      @leimanaang 10 лет назад

      epicxel I never said YOU personally are selfish. "Its OK because less people are affected", does not sit right with me, they are still PEOPLE. Granted there could be a safe diversion, but it is not a guarantee, right? No, I do not live in Puna, so I really have no dog in this fight I am just stating my belief and opinion. I understand you wanting to save your home but you are saying you would do it at the expense of someone else. That is not right to me. I just can not fathom the expectation something should be done to save "YOU" even if that means that someone else will then have to pay the penalty.

    The fact is, the people speaking on behalf of the Kānaka Maoli have an understanding about the importance of these natural processes for the landscape. The teachings in Hawaiian mythology, whether you understand them or not, are supported not only by years of observations from their ancestors, but also by modern earth scientists. People who study biogeography, oceanography, and geomorphology know the benefits that lava flows provide for the ecology of the area. We understand that by altering their flow we are changing the way this environment regulates itself, and we could be setting ourselves up for unintended consequences.

    Proverbs 18:2
    A fool takes no pleasure in understanding, but only in expressing his opinion.
    Proverbs 26:3-12
    A whip for the horse, a bridle for the donkey, and a rod for the back of fools. Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest you be like him yourself. Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own eyes. Whoever sends a message by the hand of a fool cuts off his own feet and drinks violence. Like a lame man's legs, which hang useless, is a proverb in the mouth of fools. ...
    Matthew 6:33-34
    33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
    1 Chronicles 22:17-19
    "Now set your heart and your soul to seek the LORD your God; arise, therefore, and build the sanctuary of the LORD God, so that you may bring the ark of the covenant of the LORD and the holy vessels of God into the house that is to be built for the name of the LORD." David also commanded all the leaders of Israel to help his son Solomon, saying, "Is not the LORD your God with you? And has He not given you rest on every side? For He has given the inhabitants of the land into my hand, and the land is subdued before the LORD and before His people.

    It saddens me that people, in a time where we should all come together, would rather put down others and air out there dirty laundry here. I am a Kanaka Maoli of this 'aina, Hawai'i Island. My grandparents have a home in Kalapana which my mother still lives in. I am a man of FAITH. My wife is..... HAOLE, so that makes my three youngest children part HAOLE. But, this has nothing to do with church,race or even culture. This is about COMMON SENSE!!! I lived in Las Vegas for 6 years. I knew that I was going to the desert. I knew that there is monsoons there. I knew that temperatures would exceed 100 degrees and dip below the 30's. I knew that would be snakes, coyotes, deadly spiders, etc. Knowing all of this, I decided to live there. I would never walking into a town-hall meeting to ask them to divert the snow or the heat or the windstorm. People who live in Oklahoma don't ask public officials to divert the tornadoes. People on the east coast down ask public official to divert snowstorm. That is just not possible and like the lady in the blue said, it can cause other problem or even damage more property or homes then what it was intended to do. And to the guy that said to send it to Kalapana...... well that was very...... SENTATIVE of him. Meetings like this, no matter what state that it is in, no matter what natural disaster it may be, no matter if the people of that land may feel connected, is intend to INFORM & PREPARE!!! "YES", we may be native to this land, but like our na ali'i who invited the white people to our 'aina, I invite them to come to our land. This 'aina is BIG enough that we can all coexist. But, come knowing exactly what is in store for you, your 'ohana and your future and if the pros weigh out the cons, then by all means, make this your home. There is still time to prepare and to find out exactly what we can do for our own homes.... but diversion is NOT option. Malama each other.

      THIS RIGHT HERE IS THE VOICE OF LOGIC AND REASON. I'm a 100% Peckerwood American, and what you say makes perfect sense. Man cannot block the sun with sunblock, or feed the multitude with farm raised fish. He can only pretend to for so long, until ultimately the jig is up. Most of man made "solutions" are really a crock of shit. MAGIC PILLS DON'T WORK!!! THERE ARE NO EASY WAYS OUT!!! YOU CAN'T HAVE YOUR CAKE AND EAT IT TOO!!! As Grayden's analogies so eloquently display, you are a fool to be asking any one or any power to move mountains for you. Its just not gonna happen. Plus who the hell is gonna pay for the insane costs in the vain attempt to do so??? Are your buddies that "happen" to be in the lava flow diversion business gonna do it for FREE??? Or maybe we'll just $ocialize the losses (costs), while allowing you and your buddies to privatize the profits. Maybe we'll just print the money with some Quantitative Easing. How long will America continue to eat its young while pretending to give a damn about them??? All you neocons and neoliberals need to grow a god damn brain and return to logic and reason before you close minded idiots screw all of us with your illusions of grandeur or of hope and change. Hasn't anybody learned from Katrina, Miami Hurricanes, Tornado alley twisters, etc. YOU CAN'T STOP DA BUMRUSH!!! A train is headed your way, either get the hell outta da way or STFU already.
      I'm Eastbound and Down...PEACE!!!

      ***** I agree, of course no one can move the moon or objects in space but people have diverted lava flows in past maybe not here, there are successes and failures and theres no guarantee. Im just surprised how long this flow has been going for months given the time period maybe the lava is moving slow enough that maybe we could do somthing about it thats all. its not like a raging river of lava coming down in one day, yes we should all prepare, have our insurance checked and everything or if planing on moving as a resort but should people and business have to go down that route....No. and if diversion fails then its out of our hands. I bet if this was on Oahu i bet officials would be scrambling for a diversion.....I just hope theres a flow of money coming just as fast as this lava is flowing but thats a joke.

      you people care for a bunch of molten rock? over other peoples quality of life? and in terms of culture sensitive, its not culture sensitive in what the people in charge are saying,they balance out how much money is invested in pahoa and weigh out the risk, in that is it worth saving and the answer is no, but i bet ya two to 1 if this was Honolulu there will be attempt diversion because the amount of money invested in that town out weighs the risk. behind close doors its all about money, apparently were not worth saving in what we got, and you wonder why this state is so backwards as it is. even if you could rebuild your home what is there to go back to then just a barren wasteland. i knew its an active volcano and stuff but i didnt think how the people in charge could just right it off as a loss without even attempting, thats what surprises me with all the time in the world given. and to deal with insurance companies, ha they can drop you or pull some crap on you anyway if your unlucky. it all comes down to liability as well, in that no one has the courage to take charge, i agree we all should prepare for the inevitable but if something could be done and to just right it off is another. and there have been failures of diversion in the past with some actual successes as well, so you cant tell me it cant be done when it already has, maybe not here for obvious reasons but other parts of the world. If there is a will there's a way. i wish this upon NO one but in the processes if some homes get destroyed rather having a whole community get wiped out or cut off i think thats easier to compensate for. I mean if obama can spend 100$ million of tax payer money for Hawaii vacations for his family i think they could compensate for the unfortunate ones "you would think".

    It's hard for some to believe, but some people place their priorities on things other than houses, or even their lifetime investments. Money has a peculiar stronghold over those of European descent. The all-encompassing power they assign to it is one of their cultural markers - and colonization often conditions others to overvalue it as well. There's no argument that money often makes life easier, and it's certainly a means of control for people who feel they need to control things. This can make it hard, however, for people who place higher value on things other than money - compassion, spiritual beliefs, cultural tradition, ancestry, honor, and integrity spring to mind. My feeling - and this is my feeling only - is that those who choose to move into cultural spaces other than their own should acquiesce to the culture of those spaces, or else return to the culture that is their own. That's not to say that cultures can't try to understand and share wonderful things about one another, as long as they also try to understand and share what they consider not-so-wonderful things about one another. Gladness and pain come to everyone. **** The possibility that the activity of the last three weeks could occur is not a surprise, and no one twisted anyone's arm to live in a volcano bed. There were simply people who rolled the dice and took their chances in order to live on the amazingly beautiful island of Hawai'i. Now it's time to face that decision with grace, dignity, and respect for the power that created the land they so bravely determined to call home. **** One last thought: The love of money truly is the root of all evil. Don't let it take up residence in your heart just because you're not enjoying an easy existence right now. The earth is a huge, living, breathing thing - and an encounter with Pele is a fearsome event you may have struggled to endure but you have also been blessed to witness. Try to restrain yourself from bullying/ridiculing indigenous peoples about the places and things they love and have a right to love. There's already been too much of that. Instead, try trusting in the wisdom of people who have made peace with their beautiful, ever-burgeoning lands. Listen to them. Learn from them. Respect them. If you mind losing your earthy possessions in a lava field, maybe living in the shadow of Kilauea, beautiful as it is, is not the place for you. **** Live by the words of a beloved troubadour: "When l find myself in times of trouble, Mother Mary comes to me speaking words of wisdom; let it be."

    These people built the urban environment near Pele( Volcano ) and the residents think that it is okay to move the Lava or reroute it...(stupid foreign thinking) I wish an Ali’i of the Moku showed up and told them all they have to move. It is beyond me how the western homo-sapiens can implore the Occupational state to move the environmental structure called lava-flow. These foreign consumers purchased their house next to a 1 million year old volcano. And they have the balls to ask the Volcano to move…. Shake my Head. These consumers need to have volcano insurance to be compensated but the state has no obligation to mess with the aboriginal volcano.

    Aloha nui loa,
    O Nohea ko'u inoa. Mai Nanakuli e Kaua'i. E kala mai , however, as a native Hawaiian and a servant of the one true God I would like to interject my thoughts to all on this matter on the lava flow and in particular; Pele. Is anyone aware of how many gods and goddesses the Hawaiians, our earliest ancestors had and still acknowledge? Anybody? Well here's some.
    Everyone knows Pele, volcano goddess. Her brothers Milu, lord of the spirit world, Akea, first Hawaiian king who founded a kingdom in the afterlife. Pele's sisters; Laka, goddess of hula, Kapo, goddess of the South Pacific. There's Apukohai, shark god of Kaua'i, Haulili,god of speech, Hai, god of Tapa making, Hilakawawahilani, the cloud holder, Hinakuluiau, goddess of rain, Kalaipahoa,goddess who harms trees, Kaluannuunohonionio, a god of a temple sacrificial house, Kamapua'a, the god of pigs, Kamohoali'i, keeper of the water of life, Kamooalii, god of steam, Kanaloa, ocean god, Kane, the creator, Kane-hekili, spirit of thunder, Keohaikamakaua, child of war and spirit of lava fountains, Kapohoikahiola, spirit of explosions, Keuakepo, god of rain and fire, Kiha, goddess of Maui, Koleamoku, God of the art of healing and patron god of the kahunas, Ku, architect and maker of war, Kuahana, god who kills men, Kukaoo, god of the husbandman, Kane, the godhead, Kaupe, the cannibal dog man, Kukailimoku, god of war, Kuula, god of fisherman, Laamaomao, god of winds, lives on Moloka'i, Lie, mountain goddess, Lono, god pf peace & prosperity, wind & rain, lord od the sun, Lonomakua, keeper of the sacrid fire sticks, Mahulu, names of gods in Lono's temples, Manua, supreme sovereign of Po, the spirits of chiefs and priests live within him, Maui, the time shifter, Moaalii, shark god of Oahu & Molokai, Mokuali'i, god of canoe makers, Mooaleo, a Gnome who lives on Lanai, Ouli, god who could kill people if prayed to, Poliahu, goddess of Maunakea and Pele's rival, Papa, goddess of nature, Puea, A god worshiped in darkness, Ukanipo, shark god of Hawaii, Ulaulekeahi, god of distillers and Uli, god of sorcerers. WOW, that's a lot of gods.
    Genesis 1:1"In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth." Isaiah 66: 1 " Thus sayeth the LORD the heaven is MY throne, and the earth is MY footstool; where is the house that ye build unto ME?
    Exodus 20:3-5 " Thou shalt have no other gods before ME. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them; for I the LORD thy GOD am a jealous GOD.
    So what makes Pele any different than Zeus or Poseidon or Krisna or Buddah or the Dalilama, the Pope, the movie stars and athletes many hundreds of thousands of people idolize, even worship? Worship the ALMIGHTY CREATOR, not HIS creation.
    Too much wala au about Pele. You must ho'oponopono. Set things right, amend, rectify with the Creator of all things. " The earth is the LORD'S and the fullness thereof." Isaiah 44:24 " "Thus saith the LORD, Thy Redeemer, and HE that formed thee from the womb, I AM the LORD that maketh all things; that stretcheth forth the heavens alone; that spreads abroad the earth by MYSELF." Isaiah 44:8 " Is there a god beside ME? there is no god I know not any. And finally GOD speaks to Job and questions him saying: " Where was thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? Declare if thou has understanding. Who has laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? Or who has stretched the line upon it? Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened, or who laid the Cornerstone? When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of GOD shouted for joy?" Job 38: 4-7. Mahalo Ke AKUA. Clean hour hale for the only true GOD, not for any other god or goddess. I mua KE AKUA. E hana me ka ha'aha'a. E pili mau na pomaika'i ia 'oe.
    There is only 2 ways. Truth or lie, good or evil, light or darkness. As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD!
    Clean your house for GOD through HIS SON JESHUA HA MACHACH or clean your hale for Pele." Choose this day whom you will serve. For I know the plans that I have for you declares the LORD; plans to prosper you, not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future..and when you seek ME with all your heart you will surely find me.. and you will be my people and I will be your GOD. Peace be with you all.
    Me ka aloha pumehana, malama pono, me ka ha'aha'a
    With kindest regards; warm aloha, take care, be right, humbly yours,
    Your Sista Nohea Hanaike

    So much respect for the Hawaiian women for speaking up for Pele, and also just speaking sense. Humans need to start thinking in terms of working with the world as it is, instead of trying to fight against it. That's what indigenous cultures remember, and most Westerners have forgotten.
    The world gives us so much. And our scientists have found out so much about it. If some of the natural forces that keep the world running are powerful enough to be dangerous on the small scale, then we get out of the way, just as we accept that driving can be 100% lethal if you step into moving traffic.
    But the world also gives us food, solar power, geothermal, wave power. We've only begun to learn how to tap some of these resources, and could use them more wisely. Instead of spending so much time pushing against the flow, let's harness what we can, without causing harm, as it goes by. Mahalo.
    Edit: I live in earthquake country and have had to evacuate for wildire, so I know it's hard to know all you have may go in an instant if you don't have enough warning to move your stuff.

    I may disagree about "Pele", but I agree that efforts to divert or control the lava are rather ridiculous. When has trying to control what nature does ever worked? They made a huge mistake with the wolves in Yellowstone. With rivers all across the US, they built levees which cause even more flooding problems (water can't drain and it causes more flooding downstream - those flood plains were meant to provide natural flood mitigation - building levees destroys the function of flood plains).
    The best thing to do is let nature take its course. We have no more control over where lava goes than we do the emissions from these things. We have no more control over volcanoes and lava than we do climate. They both control us, not the other way around. Like the lady in blue said, "Be realistic."

    A couple of D-9s could divert the hell out of some lava for a while, but it would be on a case by case basis. There are times when a large mound of dirt would work and other times when a trench would work. Of course times when nothing is going to stop it given the shear volume.

    If you do not understand the culture behind the greeting or the sentiment, perhaps people shouldn't have moved to a place that places the aincient culture and wisdom of kupunas past as sacred.
    With all due respect, I was surprised to see how many haoles there were in the audience compared to kanaka maoli and saddened to listen to SO many of them whining... yes, I said whining. What part of LIVING ON A VOLCANIC ISLAND (VOLCANO) did they not get? The Big island is still growing. My kupunas had to deal with lava... when I bought my home, I chose to go to Oahu because I didn't want to have to deal with lava and vog (LOL... still get the vog though). Anyone coming to live in "Paradise" assumes (sadly) that daily life will be "Paradise", that they will be accepted in "Paradise"... wake up! Paradise comes with reality. Our islands are centered in the most remote place on the planet and were created by volcanoes. Volcanoes birth new land and mountain ranges and trust me, if you think you can move the mountain... the mountain will move you by opening up a fissure anywhere it wants to and reclaiming the land it made in the first place.
    You heard the old saying, "It's not nice to fool Mother Nature."? Well, listen to this old Aunty... "Pele gon take back whatevah she wants to." ...just sayin. ;-)

    I was kind of sad to hear about the volcanic eruption a few days back, but BRUHHHHHHHH
    THE PEOPLE MOST AFFECTED BY THIS ARE THE COLONIZERS WHO WERE DUMB ENOUGH TO BUILD HOUSES RIGHT NEXT TO A VOLCANO. LAUGHING SO HARD RIGHT NOW.
    Wouldn't the real-estate peeps have fucking TOLD them "this land is only cheap because it's right next to an active volcano, so you should look at the safer land a couple miles away"? Who just ignores that kind of information?
    And how the hell do you "divert" molten lava? The trenches would stop things for like a day, but when the lava cools down and fills in the first set of trenches like cement, YOU'LL HAVE TO DIG MORE TRENCHES.

    Diversion doesn't work. I just watched a great youtube video of a film a gentleman made of the Kapoho eruption, 1960. They were building berms and trenches and walls and pushed the earth around and about with dozens of bulldozers crawling everywhere. The lava would pool behind the berm and crate an artificial perch pond and then that broke and the lava rushes out faster than ever. The fire crews were instructed to pour water on any burning structure but that was an exercise in futility. The volcano rules the day, you cannot do anything to stop it. The native Hawaiians already knew this. Whether you believe in Pele or not, the volcano rules.. the lava goes where it goes and you had better just get out of the way. If you don't like it, don't build on a volcano.

    I was a kid in Hilo during WW II and the Army Air Corps bombed the eruption in '42 to try and stop it. The glow from the eruption was making them nervous since our Island was a beacon for the presumed Japanese invasion. The bombing obviously was a huge failure and the Hawaiians said the pilots were angering Pele. Sure enough the pilots were all killed in the war. Now you could say that they were probably statistically doomed to begin with since being a pilot early in that war was pretty dangerous. But Pele is a pretty strong lady and she was very angry about being bombed. Just saying!

    That video was filmed '2014. Its now '2018. A volcano on the big island emptied down to a "pipe stem" running south east. The water table + hot gas from volcano caused breaks - crevases to burst open in vents running SE thru housing resident areas. May 12th - count of volcano lava & gas vents is 15. People who bought land, built homes in that area either knew they were living in volcano lava flow zone, or they ignored the info. Residents safely evacuated. Will the lava flow continue towards SE & the ocean?

      No. It's the lava. People who think they could direct the flow of lava who don't realize that the pagan traditions are about how multidirectional the flows can be are the idiots. You don't bother to try because there is no point in trying. Because the flows can last for a very long time, burms can break, pools can overflow, and rifts/fissures can open with almost random directionality. The reason why the 'respect' exists for Pele is simply because the flows are so random and can change so dramatically that anything but acceptance is a waste of energy.
      And look at where the lava is now...the channels would have directed the flow to the south...where it went on its own. But no one would have been able to predict or redirect the flow from fissure 8. It moved too fast.
      Stop assuming that cultural traditions have no basis in reality. They almost always do when it comes to safe living.

    if your child is sick from "natural causes" in being potentially life threatning and there is possible medications that could save your child's life the doctor says and theres no gurantee, what you gona do? If the child survives to live a normal happy life from the meds, how do you feel? But if the medication fails and the child suffers or passes from the natural cause? At least ya tried with no regrets and not thinking what IF. Look how far chemotherapy has become, a disease once diagnosed people thought right away as "you only have this many months to live" now we HAVE the technology and therapy to do somthing about it and PREVENT and TREAT. Its called HOPE people HOPE

    Kalapana had its chance in the past but it would effect the least amount of homes to compensate for instead of affecting established growing communities who are now possibly doomed to the same fate as kalapana. you want jobs here and all that but where do you think people who bring MONEY to this island to survive and work gona go? what happens if they just let all of the bigisland become kalapana when they had time on their side to do somthing about it. its the twenty first century now, we have the tech but not the officials in office who have the balls and brains to take calculated risk to keep this island growing.

    Let's get a few things straight about all this diversion/offending pele and Hawaiian culture.
    First of all, Puna is a very spread out community with a lot of hippies and poor drug addicts. That's why the "official" view is to do nothing. You can bet your ass if the lava was headed for Hilo or Kona they would blast, dig, and divert the lava anyway they could without any consideration for cultural religious beliefs. It's ALL about the money!
    2nd. Ancient Hawaiians altered every aspect of the land to make life better. They built huge fish ponds. They diverted rivers natural path to feed taro fields. The even moved rocks with a human chain across the islands to build roads for slaves to carry the lazy kings and queens around. Every modern road or development project is diverting peles rocks unnaturally. Trying to have it both ways delevitamizes this illogical argument.
    3rd. Present day locals believe in Pele because it's a defiance and rebellion against European culture. It's a form of reverse racism to believe that Pele is cleaning up and getting rid of the Haoles. If Hawaii was not invaded, but somehow culturally and scientifically evolved on it's own, modern day Hawaiians probably would not care much about outdated superstitions gods.
    Lastly. Diverting the lava to save the few remaining beaches, parks, warm ponds, and natural areas people use is a much better argument than diversion to save homes. Homes can be rebuilt. Pohoiki beach and surf areas cannot. If Puna loses the last remaining beach parks, what will the people and especially the kids have left as a healthy outlet? Drug addiction will escalate and the already poor depressed neighborhoods will get worse.

    Also if this was oahu there would be diversion despite "pele" ,why? officials wont tell you but behind close doors its MONEY.

      diversion is not the way, just let the lava do its thing. Cant do anything about the rain, tsunamis, earthquake, nature will always endure and destroy anything in its path.
