Great video. My 9X is vintage 2012, never used. I intended to mod it for the ER9X firmware, but lost interest. Ordered the Micro ISP and will install it when it arrives. Then I can use my new 9X for the first time.
Needed to find a new driver for the USBTiny but soon had my trusty old 9x running openTX. First attempt ended with an eeprom error but another go solved that, when I switched on it prompted me to format the error by pressing any switch and then went into openTX. Thanks for a great video.
Grate video I'll receive my first drone soon. Looking forward to do this upgrade to the remote. Thanks for sharing. So if i get it right, after upgrading the firmware. You comunicate with the processor of the remote in realtime.... Over usb. Awsome :) Can you adapt the stick slopes midd flight? Can come in handy as a rooky haha. Correct me if im wrong. Is this a way to get telemetrie working. With ArduFlight for example? Of cource the drone needs to be equipped with telemetrie as well than, i guess. With the idea in mind to flip a switch, that stabalizes the drone and sends it back home.
So from what I am understanding is the 9X radio can have 1 of 2 possible processors and the tiny AT44 can only be used for flashing one of them, correct? Is it marked on the processor so you can tell which one I have?
I have just completed this mod and it looks like it is working. But my computer does not have the driver and asked to load the cd to manually load the driver. Do you know where to find the driver to download?
I have a flysky th9x and would like to flash it. I have already installed the tiny usb and driver. but in open tx cant find it any Ideas or suggestions
Hi i get error No DFU capable USB device found and i donot get the same menu when i click on the USB menu what version of open TX do u use in this video thx
My 9X suddenly show EEPROM ERROR when turned on and not it no longer work. I was wondering whether re-program with new firmware help some this issue. Can someone please help.
Thanks for the video tutorial.... can I ask what benefits would there be upgrading from the standard Turnigy, FlySky 9x Radio firmware to the openTX or ER9x Firmware!
OpenTX or ER9X (basically the same thing) opens up unlimited possibilities of channel mapping, mixing and setting switch functions that are either not possible at all, or incredibly difficult to achieve with the stock firmware. It also allows for saving more models and other functions that are necessary if you ever intend to utilize different TX modules.
Thanks for watching! OpenTX has huge feature improvements over the stock firmware. Basically, anything you can imagine doing can be done somehow. You can use any input for whatever you want, on any output, and mix in any other input easily. If you already own one of these radios with the stock firmware, watching a few opentx tutorials will really shew you the difference
That is the diff between the $60 and the $180 radio. I'd rather buy an open radio that is upgrade-able than one with all bells and whistles installed but probably closed source FW.
Browsed thru your videos. I was looking for a tutorial on replacing the stock 9X display, with one that is illuminated. Did you ever produce one and/or did you ever mod your stock display for your own purposes?
You don't need to replace the stock display, you only need to get a backlight kit. Hobby King sells them very cheap. You can see one in action on this video when Rich turns on his transmitter
Yes it is possible to use the arduino but it is a little more complicated to connect the wires, in the software part it is easier than with a recording board.
Tin them. Then you'll know. I mean... when you strip off the insulation at the ends, you're left with strands of bare wire... hand-twist each of these bare wires so that they stay together rather than fray apart and then apply a wee-bit of solder to them... don't just let a blob drop onto them... heat the wire (the twisted thingie part) and let the heat of the wire melt the solder. Don't get excessive with the solder... just a light little coating that keeps all the little strands together (inside as well as outside). THAT is called "tinning" the wire. Once you've done it... you'll remember that you did. ;-) Oh. I forsee a problem here... Many things can be done many ways but usually there are better ways and worse ways... even though you "could" use solid hookup wire for this - DON'T. Instead, use flexible *Stranded* wire. Check out other channels on RUclips for a better "tutorial" on soldering - my explanation was just a quickie.
Everything installed and hooked up but it won't communicate with the programmer. Windows Device Manager says it is not installed correctly because of no driver. Googled for an hour and can't seem to find one Please Help! BTW. Running Windows 10.
In Europe we are mentaly reduced , so that good things do not get to us , this is the link what works in Europe www.ebay.com/itm/Micro-USB-Tiny-AVR-ISP-ATtiny44-USBTinyISP-Programmer-5V-For-Arduino-Bootloader-/161947116048?hash=item25b4cce210:g:dBYAAOSwaA5Wl3Xo based on the keywords that you gave me the original link might it work only for the us market so each person should find this programmer on his own continent market thx
Hi there :D I had an error which says: AVRdude connector error. So I downloaded AVRdude files and inserted it into usr/local/bin and now the writing firmware is launching but nothing happened. Do you have I idea? Thanks BTW :)
Hello man i have Big problems with that program!!! now it's have new version and now i can't make anything please do you make new video to show please!!!!!!
Thanks Rich - I'm excited to begin playing with OpenTX on my 9x - I greatly appreciate the mod - and it's neat to see what goes into it.
Brilliant video, just getting into FPV and I didn’t want to waist my old controller. Thanks heaps!

Thanks for sharing this topic and providing the step by step video. Can I ask what gauge and type of wire was used during your demo?
Just a note, if you happen to have an Arduino duemilanove it can be used to program the ICSP.
appreciated, very easy to follow :)
Hi,
Was the radio switched on or off during the flashing?
So from what I am understanding is the 9X radio can have 1 of 2 possible processors and the tiny AT44 can only be used for flashing one of them, correct? Is it marked on the processor so you can tell which one I have?

Can Companion be used to flash the original Firmware back onto the radio?
i just installed the tiny usb but the open tx does not give the option of choosing tiny usb which version open tx u got
I have a flysky th9x and would like to flash it. I have already installed the tiny usb and driver. but in open tx cant find it any Ideas or suggestions
where would you attach wires on the 9xrpro board any help would be great
Hi i get error No DFU capable USB device found and i donot get the same menu when i click on the USB menu what version of open TX do u use in this video thx

hi just wondering if you can advise my iv tried to flash my 9x when i try to load it comes up with flashing done (exit code=1) ?
could you share firmware please. because there is error while i download the firmware
pls guide me , micro USB PORT BOARD , where to find ? is this aviable at aliexpress ?? pls share link if you find , i am from pakistan .
Hi, what voltage should I set the ISP programmer to? It can be 3.3 or 5v
Can I use Open TX companion to flash ER9X firmware?
Very nice video
frankly I'm surprised that turnigy doesn't ship these with openTX and a tinyisp pre-installed
That is the diff between the $60 and the $180 radio. I'd rather buy an open radio that is upgrade-able than one with all bells and whistles installed but probably closed source FW.

NappingPup You don't have to change the display. Just buy the backlight kit for $5 from HobbyKing and install. It's easy.

Got it. Thank you.
Available from HKing
could you share firmware please. because now companion version 2.19 can not download firmware
could an arduino be used to program this remote controller
Yes it is possible to use the arduino but it is a little more complicated to connect the wires, in the software part it is easier than with a recording board.
do you have some problems with driver for this ISP?
Can you supply a new link for the programmer? This link no longer works. Also how do I know if I have "tinned" wires?
I keep getting error USB TINY CAN not be find my pc see it and i installed driver
what driver do u use plz for the tiny usb thx
Did you ever find the driver for this?
Greetings, where can I download the firmware, thank you
Everything installed and hooked up but it won't communicate with the programmer.
Windows Device Manager says it is not installed correctly because of no driver.
Googled for an hour and can't seem to find one Please Help! BTW. Running Windows 10.
ultimatehovado1
Thank you! I'll do that!
Has anyone found the drivers for Windows 10 for these ATTiny Programmers? I haven't been able to find anything convincing yet.
learn.adafruit.com/usbtinyisp/drivers
the link no longer works
can you put another , or a way to find this this small programmer, key words.
because I find only the large programmers
Strange, the link works fine for us. No biggie. Just search for "micro tiny USB isp" on eBay.
In Europe we are mentaly reduced , so that good things do not get to us ,
this is the link what works in Europe
www.ebay.com/itm/Micro-USB-Tiny-AVR-ISP-ATtiny44-USBTinyISP-Programmer-5V-For-Arduino-Bootloader-/161947116048?hash=item25b4cce210:g:dBYAAOSwaA5Wl3Xo
based on the keywords that you gave me
the original link might it work only for the us market
so each person should find this programmer on his own continent market
thx
which version of open tx do u use since i donot get same menu when i click on usb thx
Hi there :D I had an error which says: AVRdude connector error. So I downloaded AVRdude files and inserted it into usr/local/bin and now the writing firmware is launching but nothing happened. Do you have I idea?
Thanks BTW :)
there should be a avrdude.exe file in the opentx companion folder somewhere that you should point it to.
+Flite Brothers alright. I am looking for that file. But does it work on Mac? Cause it's an exe file.
Can i use the r9m with the turnigy 9x?
tbs crossfire works for me so probably yes the r9m will probably works to
Not everyone on RUclips is an expert. I think the first step should be to tell viewers why they may want to perform this upgrade.
Hello man i have Big problems with that program!!! now it's have new version and now i can't make anything please do you make new video to show please!!!!!!
Your link doesn't work.
