You see, children, Ghouls are simply humans who've been exposed to an ungodly amount of radiation and haven't had the good fortune to die. Sure, they may look like hideous zombies from an old monster flick, but their hearts, their souls, their tears are all very much human. So please, if you meet one of the Capital Wasteland's many Ghouls, leave your prejudice at the door an your pistol in its holster. Ah yes, one important caveat, kiddies. Those Feral Ghouls that prefer the dark, dank underground? They ARE basically mindless zombies. So kill as many as you damn well please.

The reason he wanted his troops at their best state of mind was so they would be able to notice synths more easily. If a soldier has the same tendencies and personality, then others would be able to identify sudden changes in their comrades and report it to medical under the guise of mental health. This was just a screening process. Im sure Maxson cares for the brotherhood, but he's up to something, even after you beat the institute hes preoccupied and on edge. The brotherhood elder quest also wouldn’t be that great lore wise. I don’t think Elders are replaced via battle to the death. In New Vegas, if an Elder breaks a major rule like the Chains that Binds then they’re demoted to knight while the head paladin takes their place no? If not, I think the council of Elders back in California decide on the next Elder like how Arther replaces Lyons.

    • @samuelbishop3316
      @samuelbishop3316 4 года назад +61

The answer is none of the above. He has all his memories, people know him. The institute doesn't swap people who don't know they're synths, only those that do so they can have an agent. Planting danse, the best solider there arguably, as they're own enemy seems like a terrible idea. Not to mention the institute had him listed as escaped on their database.
A more likely explanation is that he escaped long ago, the railroad found him, wiped his mind and sent him to DC where he met Cutler when he moved into rivet city. They started thier junk stand, he and Cutler join up. And he rises to the rank of paladin to only return to the commonwealth and find out he's a synth.

Maybe not a full-blown rediscovery, but in comparison to the hermits running the Chapters in the Westcoast? They're doing a lot better for themselves. Owyn Lyons and Arthur Maxson both got the Eastcoast Chapter in a much stronger position with their approach to leadership. From Owyn Lyons getting the chapter to abandon tradition when needed, to Arthur Maxson managing to make the compromises needed to keep the former Outcasts, the hard-liners and native-born members of the Chapter united.

The way more interesting story (to me at least) is that Danse was replaced by a synth after coming in contact with the sole survivor, as a way for the Institute to keep an eye on what was happening in the Commonwealth and the BoS.

the normal gen 3 synths were made to look exactly like a human and even believe so to make it easier to infiltrate camps or important locations for long periods or switch a real human with a synth.the only way to tell if one is really a synth is by doing a full autopsy on the corpse to look for parts which are hidden inside, there cant be a remote control because it would be detectible(radio signal probably as the institute is using the classic radio signal),althought each synth has a unique code/name to "turn them off?" it can only be activated by being there and saying it to them.coursers on the other hand do transmit a signal back and forth to the institute to pin point their locations and teleport around and are detectible as we hunt one,in one of the quests.i want to note here that chase from acadia is a courser synth and the only female one too(maybe a prototype?not much info is given)but there hasnt been any attempt from the institute to bring her back or even destroy her,now thats a plot hole :P

If you travel to the last place in Kellogg's memory and listen to what travis yes travis is saying on the radio, about piper's paper about mcdunna and do the math of the ages people would be things don't add up, if that was really Shaun in kellogs memory that would at least make piper and travis very old characters at least as old as Shaun was and will be present day in fallout. It's my friends theory that that's not actually shaun in Kellog's memory, but synth shaun.

I also saw another loading screen description that stated that X-01 power armor was created post-war by what remained of the U.S. military and that the cosmetic design of it's appearance was inspired by the cosmetic appearance of mirelurks. Fun fact: The colors of the armor worn by paladins and knights like Danse are the same as those used by the BoS Outcasts in Fallout 3, where they employed those reddish tones. We know that Maxon managed to somehow unify both factions, but within the Brotherhood, we see the discontent of some soldiers due to the more aggressive approach. Even the wandering scribe, who you can find as one of the recruitable merchants, mentions that he left the faction when Maxon took power, disappointed by his more selfish viewpoint. This means that the BoS we see in Fallout 4 is really the faction in its purest form. This would explain why almost everyone in the Commonwealth hates the BoS, even though they were the good guys in Fallout 3. It's simply not the same Brotherhood as before.

An interesting aspect of what might've been the original vision for the Brotherhood is that they may not have been intended to have such a long stay in the narrative as they've had. The western canon definitely shows them paying the consequences for never allowing outsiders into their cause by the time New Vegas happens, as the New California Republic overpowered them at HELIOS One simply by outnumbering them, forcing what was left of the Mojave chapter into hiding. Given how often the Brotherhood pits itself against other factions and their strict anti-outsider policy, their days are numbered. I figure the East Coast only got as strong as it was because of Lyons' more lenient leadership before Maxson took over.

I always assumed Maxon put so much emphasis on the mental stability so that it'd be easier to detect synths. Someone suddenly changes drastically and it sticks out like a sore thumb. If everyone is a little off-kilter from all of the isolation and missions, some odd behaviors can blend in - people might no notice. The testing removes ambiguity between when someone is a synth and when someone is just going through the goings on.
Basically, they're combing over everything a person is going through in order to keep everyone mentally well. They're treating signs of problems like physical things such as fever... which is a really good way of getting people going along with routinely checking-in to see if they're still them. But I mean, this also means that anyone showing signs of unusual behavior are being openly examined.
It probably works better if people generally don't consider it a synth test. A synth infiltrating may not realize that's kinda what it is. Or at least it would be very useful in that regard.
I mean, I'm taking creative license here, but given how paranoid Maxon is, I could see him wanting to focus on mental health with that in mind.

It's so frustrating to know the BOS line was so close to being potentially really great. The idea of Dance being a Synth who is loyal because has this gut feeling of hating the institute but not knowing why... If they had taken the next step with you being elder and allowed you to restore the ideals of Lyons the whole becoming elder would have been awesome. Being able to align the BOS with the Minutemen and Diamond City would have made their story SO much better.
(or hell if they were feeling particularly new vegasy maybe even a whole other very hard quest path to convince the BOS to ally with the institute since the Gen 3s resolve the whole 'insular coven reproductive problem, potentially setting the brotherhood up as major antagonists for a future game...)

i think the quest was scrapped because arthur maxson is actually a direct descendant of roger maxson, the founder father of the brotherhood of steel. Before east coast capital expedition of the brotherhood, all member of the brotherhood have to be "born" brotherhood (like you are member of the brotherhood because your father was a scribe and your mother was a paladin), it is called "brotherhood" for a reason. no one outside in the wasteland can join the brotherhood, and also in the brotherhood there is a council of elders, sort of an inner circle in the brotherhood leadership, so the actual elder on top (lets just say; arthur maxson) cannot just make a decision or doing whatever he wants without the council of elders consent and/or agreement. So yeah, if the sole survivor, a wasteland scavver with a mongrel dog becoming the elder of the brotherhood just because he/she powering up liberty prime and murdered arthur, it just dont fit in the fallout lore, fallout lore that already losing consistency by bethesda in fallout 4 that is.

The institute has always been my go to faction. I couldn’t agree with bos mission. I was okay with them up until they made me start forcing settlements to supply them for free. In my mind that makes them an occupying force trying to take over the commonwealth. At least the institute left the majority of the settlements alone and only replaced a few individuals so that they could keep tabs on the outside world. The institute is the best hope for humanity’s future in fallout.

The thing about the institute is they kidnap, murder, and replace people with synths. The BoS would be better in the long run, if they could cut out the bigotry towards non humans and actually start rebuilding society. Civilization needs industry, agriculture, clean water, and manpower. They need to focus on these things, or they wont remain relevant into the future. The NCR managed to defeat the West Coast chapters, and if the East Coast wants to remain in power, they need to work on helping others and recruiting. Establishing a justice system would be another big thing. The institute, they have no desire to help anyone but themselves.
