- Cwm Rhondda is my favourite Welsh Tune This is sung by a Welsh congregation in a Welsh chapel.
I am not Welsh but I love the traditional music that has come out of Wales.
I have uploaded this to try and make US listeners aware that the version they appear to play and sing is not true to the original tune and I want to know at what point it was changed :-) To me this change alters the character of the tune.
I am Welsh and very proud of it,even more proud when asked at a funeral of an Englishman from Kent, that myself and friends who travelled there to attend his funeral, were asked to sing Cwm Rhondda in Welsh, very ,very honoured we were .
Lovely story, thank you
If great songs and singing were the gauges of the greatness of a nation Wales would be a superpower ... I'm English btw.
I am half Danish and half Welsh. This hymn always brings tears to my eyes. Reminds of going to chapel with my grandpa, my parents and twin brother. Those were the days ...
Best observation I ever read. So good I will pretend I made it. Add Calon Lan in case any listener is doubtful.
@@JimMcCrudden-w6gabsolutely. That’s another beautiful one.
English here but this is a great song. Shivers-down-spine sort of stuff. Marvellous.
I am not Welsh but Chilean. However I have been impacted by the lyrics of this hymn which is a true prayer where both guide and direction are asked for to live this life until the believer in Jesus is called to live with his Heavenly Father.Let the Lord bless his children through this hymn for all generations!
My greetings from Chile to all my brethren (brothers and sisters) of Wales.
My dad was Welsh and although we never lived there, l'm sorry to say. I feel very proud of my Welsh roots.😊
From Southern California USA. Sang this hymn to this tune in church this morning.
I came to Wales in 1965 and fell in love with it, especially the singing. Bought records of male choirs, and met singers. Even sang in a pub myself. Thank you for your music; never let it die.
My grandfather was from Wales and my Dad loved to sing. Especially hymns. This song makes me feel close to my Dad who is singing in heaven.
I've just learnt a good friend of mine,a proud Welshman, died on 22 September,11 days short of his 65th birthday. The news has gone around our local pub like wildfire, customers, former work colleagues are united in their sadness and grief.Playing this song, which I personally love anyway, seems a nice way of paying tribute.RIP, Dave,so many people are going to miss you
There was a great Revival in Wales ! Singing songs to God like this, no wonder. The Welsh are without doubt, the best singers ! Hope and pray there's a Revival there as well as my country Scotland, England and NI.
during ww2 I was evacuated to wales and spent four years in Llanwnog. this brings a tear to my eye
+Harold Wakelam :-)
+Harold Wakelam God bless you! Where were you from originally, if you don't mind me asking?
Llanwnog?? Jest lawr y ffordd o fi bud!
I live in Pennsylvania, and whenever I visit the coal region counties of the NE part of the state, I occasionally pass by old Welsh Congregational churches that are still in use or abandoned. It is then that this hymn comes back to me, and I think of how proud I am of my late mother's family, who was of Welsh and English stock. (My father's side was Czech and Sudeten German) Whenever I hear this hymn in church I think about how hard the Welsh had to work in the mines and mills in Pennsylvania. Wales Forever!!!!❤
Love this! I am from the US but have Welsh ancestry and proud of it. One of my all-time favorite hymns.
i am welsh and they made us sing this every saint davids day. i love it and i always would request it in churches
I went to the Isle of Man on my honeymoon. A men’s Welch choir was staying at the same hotel-they were there for a music festival. The average age of the members was about 85 I think they said.-that were all so happy to meet us! They sang together at the pub every night. It’s a favorite memory ❤
Guide me, O thou great Redeemer,
Pilgrim through this barren land;
I am weak, but thou art mighty;
Hold me with thy powerful hand:
Bread of heaven, bread of heaven
Feed me till I want no more.
Feed me till I want no more.
Open thou the crystal fountain
Whence the healing stream shall flow;
Let the fiery, cloudy pillar
Lead me all my journey through:
Strong deliverer, strong deliverer
Be thou still my strength and shield.
Be thou still my strength and shield.
When I tread the verge of Jordan,
Bid my anxious fears subside;
Death of death, and hell's destruction,
Land me safe on Canaan's side:
Songs of praises, songs of praises
I will ever give to thee.
I will ever give to thee.
Songs of praises i will ever give to thee.
@@inaearley2539 Is this a JEWISH song for the Christian Walesh people???
@@violetmiller3723 Yes, Isn't it magnificent? Some Christian writers knew where their traditions came from.
@@violetmiller3723It’s not a Jewish song no, the writer and composer was a Welsh Christian. If you’re confused because of the line about Jordan, Jordan was also mentioned in the Bible as a holy place and it’s not native to Jews historically what so ever, it was a multi faith place back then (and should be now, it’s Palestinian land…) and a place of peace and worship. This song is a staple in Welsh Churches and has been for a long time.
Tonight, my country (Australia) plays Wales in the World Cup. Despite my son's protests, I shall sing this hymn at the top of my voice when the crowd sings it. The greatest hymn ! Glenn
well that moment must have been embarrassing because this is not the anthem of wales...
@@nirlux5564 it might as well be...its sung at a lot of their football events etc.
Thanks, Glenn! Much appreciated :-)
@@nirlux5564 nor did he say it was…
The only time I have conflicting loyalties is when Wales plays Australia. The upside is that the best team in the world always wins.
I am a Welshman now living in London. This brings back the hwyl and gets to my very being and soul. Marvellous!!
Greatest hymn EVER.I never regret to have Wales as my adopted country all the way from China.
A great many hymns from my childhood are from Wales. Imagine my awe when I found out that my family originates in Wales. What a godly lineage. Gwasanaethwn Dduw nerthol.
Greetings from Ghana. I love this hymn. My spirit is lifted up, Great hymn.
hello Ghana
Haia pobl o Ghana! Gobeithio fod popeth yn wych yno!
There is nothing so beautiful as a Welsh choir singing . Wonderful! . from a very grateful Englishman ! thanks for posting
Just began my morning (cancer patient) with this beautiful lilt. A song reminding me of my Welsh great grandparents +
At 54 years old, Imagine my surprise in being raised as half Irish when in fact I discovered my mothers family is Welsh. So very proud of that! What wonderful news to know the truth!
Beautiful rendition. There is truly nothing like the Welsh singing God’s praises; it is uniquely heartfelt and faithful. Thank you for posting this.❤️💐
Shivers down my spine whenever I hear this. Magnificent!! thanks for posting
i am half welsh & love this
Goosebumps over and over
Guide Me, O Thou Great Redeemer (as we sing it) is my favorite hymn. It stirs me, it moves me. Its power and beauty seem to be something the Welsh have a genius for.
Welsh and proud of my roots… although I no longer live in my homeland… as the saying goes “ you can take the girl out of wales, but you can’t take Wales out of the girl” Cymru am byth x x
A good rousing hymn, but the real passionate, heart-wrenchers are the those dark, brooding hymns in minor keys, like Llef, Aberystwyth and Trewen to name just three, and there's the passion of Bryn Calfaria. I like Cwm Rhondda, but those other ones are the ones that have the hairs on the back of my neck standing up and the pit of my stomach clenching.
As a child I remember loving all the hymns of that type. I enjoyed singing most hymns just for the sake of singing, but those ones affected me even as a youngster. It's lovely being able to hear them again like this even though I'm far away from anywhere where I'm likely to come across them being performed "live".
Also a popular hymn in the United States as well. The lyrics often have "Guide Me oh thou great Jehovah" Simply a great song. beautiful
We've just sung this at Church this Sunday (29th May 2016) and I was in tears! I love this hymn. I'm not Welsh but this "GETS ME" every time!
My favorite hymn, hands down. One I know by heart and sometimes sing to myself. It was played at my mother's funeral, as it will be at mine. Wonderful, powerful music.
Thanks for posting...my buddy just told me that this song helped him up some of the high peaks we climbed in the Sierras two summers ago. Now that he is clear of cancer we're ready to go again.
i live in North Wales and a lot of my friends will break out into song, in Welsh of course, down the local pub.. Truly an uplifting experience..
Diolwch yn fawr!
l live in the heartland of welsh baptist/Methodist chapels in the south wales valleys and it will all be gone within the next ten years. i grew up in this and its going but the song i hope will continue
I was born in Germany, but am American of Celtic background. Grew up Lutheran, but the LCA grew too liberal for my taste. Found myself loving my great aunts' church in Savannah, Ga.-which was Anglican and became an Anglican in '78. Haven't lost my love of my German heritage, but I want to go over to the UK, Ireland, and Germany if it takes a bucket list one day to get there. I soon discovered my 1940 Hymn Book contains this very hymn-and many others I love today.
This is one of my favourite hymns!! Even as an American, it touches me deeply and it makes me tear up. I feel very much in touch with my Welsh roots whenever I hear it. Thank you for posting this!!
This is the rendition I sang as a teenager in the choir. Thanks for this.
I have often heard this hymn, sung in English, when I have attended church here in the southern U.S. This is the first time I have heard it sung in Welsh and did not know it was a Welsh hymn.
Thank you for sharing with the world
BRAVO

This was played at my name funeral anytime I hear it it gets me but I know she's looking down on me smiling
This takes me back to my school days , and singing it in service .
One of my favorite hymns! Extremely well done!
I visited Wales with The All Ohio State Youth Choir in 1969 and count it one of the great joys of my life. The Celtic Brothers Choirs amazed my young life. Thank-you.
Cwm Rhonnda always makes me gooey mess in tears of emotion.
@raptor002, I agree 100%! It is from the heart and soul of the welsh! I am welsh Baptist! I live in USA BUT my father and his father came here from wales! And we sang these hymns in our church with passion every sunday morning! To be humble and meek in the eyes of the Lord is a great thing and mighty!
A prayer we all need!🙏
Thanks happychappy for uploding!
One of the best hymn in the world.I had no idea it is from Wales till I went to Wales from Hong Kong.
brings tears to my eyes and think of my home and country Wales
Thank you for posting. I am in the US and have searched high and low for this song and the original story behind it. Every time I hear it, I love the English people more and more. Just for this song.
bmtdouglas thanks for posting but not English this is wales different country England are our neighbours

Cannot beat Welsh Chapel Singing a my mother and me and my brother went to Chapel every Sunday when we were quite young. The chapel was in Treherbert or they called it Gospel Hall good singing there too.
I remember singing this at my school in Yorkshire many moons ago, brought back many memories
GoodChappy! I live across the pond! And in our little welsh Baptist church when we sing this beloved hymn we usually bring the roof down! I swear they hear us all the way up in the east end of the town! hahaha!
Powerful and quite beautiful
My favourite Hymn, thank you GoodChappy!!!
Lovely hymn and a favourite of our choir (Hong Kong Welsh Male Voice Choir), particularly in bars!
Reminds me so much of Diana's funeral. Such an uplifting song.. i played it at my mums funeral. It holds a special place in my heart....
Paul G Yes, I agree. It has the "Feel Good" Factor.
This was excellent! Thank you for posting it.
GREAT STUFF!!THE WELSH CERTAINLY SING BEAUTIFULLY!!!WOW!! POW!!LOVELY!GOOSE BUMPS TIME!!THANKS!FROM(U.K.)
Thank you for this. For all its worth we have always sung redeemer" I dont think its been "changed" just different words for different people. This hymn reminds me of my nan´s funeral. She kept a pub next to the church and on winter nights she would let the choir rehearse in the warmth of the pub back room. It became known as "The Church House" When she died, the remaining choir members gathered and sang this as her coffin was carried down the aisle. A fitting tribute for a great lady.
@goodchappy I absolutely agree it brings tears of joy to my eyes
100% Welsh and proud!!!
Me to wales for ever
I'm from Australia and this is my school hymn, definitely the best one to sing (we sand jehovah not redeemer)
It SHOULD be Jehovah, the original. The allusions are to the Old Testament. and Jehovah is the more appropriate term for that.
I'm no Welsh nor British but I would sing this so often for I find it so beautiful. This serves as my prayer. It sounds like a national anthem so beautiful I used the music for the national anthem of a fictional country which I am writing in my novel. Greetings from the Philippines!
Greetings also from England Paolo. I'm about 1 hour from Wales. Agreed. Great music. Good luck with that novel.
Enlightened Patriot Thanks so much!! 😁
You are welcome! Keep safe from that volcanic activity I saw on the news this morning.
Thanks! Fortunately my province is not within the region where the Mayon Volcano is located. It is very far from our place by passing 2-3 regions. But yes I hope and pray that the ashfall will not pass by our province just as what happened in 1991.
Paolo Cabling Well, Welsh are British so if your going to say your not British it would mean you aren't from any of the nation's in Britain. So no need to mention the fact you aren't Welsh. Nor British. 😂 I know, it's confusing.
I live in Wales and I remember hearing this during Prince William and Princess Catherine’s wedding in 2011
My other recording of this hymn was based on the version heard at Prince William and Kate's wedding.
Probably one of best, if not THE best arrangement of this hymn that can be found on RUclips. Of course it sounds great with a male voice choir, but with this arrangement I particularly enjoy the timpany sound of the cornet (I know I am saying that wrong) but can be clearly heard just after the two minute mark, when the conductor has given him a wink.& a nod as if to say, go on son have at it.
Combined with the choir makes my hair stand on end.
A beautiful hymn, sung the only way it should be; with pride, with power & enthusiasm!
Love this, although I am a Presbyterian from Pennsylvania and this is exactly the melody I was raised hearing. I didn't know it was Welsh, however, so thanks. One of the greatest of Hymns.
another geezer whom has lived in new orleans for the last 41 years , but grew up in New zealand and sung this in the assembly hall of Wellington college. Last sang it last as a spectator in cardiff arms park before a rugby game. What is it that gets me ? The wonderful dominant seventh chord before the last verse? who knows , the lyrics are strange , but the music still brings tears to my eyes.
beautiful country, beautiful people. thank you for the amazing post...
I wish this wonderful hymn was in our Catholic hymnal!. I share the desire to join my ancestors in their praise of our God and King!
In the good old chapel days of Wales the name Jehovah could be sung but never taken in vain.
Simply beautiful and stirring. And I'm not Welsh! Thanks for uploading.
Gives me chills. Love it. God is the greatest!
My late father was a man of Harlech and this is our family hymn.
sehr schön und erbauend!
I am English, My wife is half English, half Welsh, Her Father is Welsh and said to me once, "You didn't beat us at rugby, you just scored more points" Nos Da.

Proud of what...an accident of birth?
TheDawgKatcher pride is often related to acquired traits, just as the ascribed ones. Let them be proud.
Goodchappy, I have rarely if ever seen any RUclips comment area without a thumbs down; there are simply contrarians in this world. It's a beautiful submission.
Very proud of this hymn.
l can just hear those voices that are from Wales.Vibrant
I'm working on learning this on my fiddle as it is something I heard a lot growing up with a Welsh father.
There is Nothing like Welsh Choir singing. It just warms your heart ❤️
Long May it continue. My Mother who would have been 110 now, when she was 18 sang in Welsh Choir from Haverfordwest Pembrokeshire at the Royal Albert Hall. Also that choir sang at the opening of the original Wembley Stadium. Long time ago…..
She always watched the Welsh Rugby on TV when they sang the Welsh National Anthem, the tears would always just stream down her cheeks, with pride and pleasure. Lovely memories of My Mum.
in 2000, we stayed eight days in London, visiting all the historic venues and especially the brompton oratory(latin mass) and westminster cathedral. at the latter we noticed there was a crowd forming outside. there would be an ordination, we were told, so we excitedly stayed for it. the procession ensued, and we noticed a small group of family members; it turned out they included a wife and children! a convert, as you described, C of E. totally exhilarating for us. we exchanged letters JMJ
Awesome singing this as an Englishman when the Lions beat Australia on Saturday; great hymn and anthem.
The best version of this hymn is sung a cappella in the movie How Green Was My Valley (1941) by The Welsh Singers themselves. And, it is sung in Welsh. As a matter of fact the entire movie is filled with traditional Welsh folk songs. However, I love this version too. Thanks for the upload.
Thank you for your comment. The reason why I like this hymn is when it is accompanied by a pipe organ. Without it, it is just not the same.
goodchappy It's lovely with a pipe organ, but to my mind the true version is the a cappella version our welsh (male voice) choir sings when beered up in a watering hole here in Hong Kong!
My fav movie of all time, and I love the "good welsh" singing
Sounds great with a good brass band too.
Every time I hear this song, I always think of that movie.
Last line of the first verse is better translated "feed me now and ever more." When Jehovah Himself is serving the dinner, I'll never NOT want more for all eternity. Praise His name!
Yes I prefer "Feed me now and ever more"
Welsh voices, for all nations to hear if they will listen. What a proud tradition,
PROUD TO BE WELSH GOD BLESS YOU ALL
I MISS SINGING THIS IN SCHOOL 😭😭
God Bless Wales , from a son of Erin
Welsh and proud, Thank youu
goodchappy, nice to hear from you. there are more than a few protestant hymns sung at catholic masses. why not this one, I wouldn't know. my parish priest agreed with me. "how great thou art" is just one sung regularly.
Guide me, O Thou great Redeemer,
Pilgrim through this barren land;
I am weak, but Thou art mighty;
Hold me with Thy powerful hand.
Bread of heaven, bread of heaven,
Feed me now and evermore,
Feed me now and evermore.
Open now the crystal fountain,
Whence the healing stream doth flow.
Let the fire and cloudy pillar
Lead me all my journey through.
Strong Deliverer, strong Deliverer,
Ever be my strength and shield,
Ever be my strength and shield.
When I tread the verge of Jordan,
Bid my anxious fears subside.
Death of death, and hell's Destruction,
Land me safe on Canaan's side.
Songs of praises, songs of praises
I will ever sing to Thee,
I will ever sing to Thee.
Songs of praises, songs of praises
I will ever sing to Thee,
I will ever sing to Thee.
Many thanks from Chicago. Alas, the closest I came to Wales was Shropshire. I'll try to make amends.
Really lovely !!!!
I remember singing it many times at school.
We sang this Hymn in Church just yesterday. Being Mormon (LDS) it is one of our standard hymns and beloved by all. I really cannot discern any difference except for using Jehova in place of Redeemer. It is a wonderful version. I often look at where the hymns come from and the dates of publication. I think of my ancestors who left Wales, England and Scotland some 200 years ago for new lives in America. After all of this time, the same words pass from my lips on the Sabbath just as it did theirs.
The Welsh ties to LDS run very deep. John Parry Sr., born in North Wales in 1789, led 100 Welsh Mormons to America in 1849 and followed the Mormon Trail to Utah Territory. After the General Conference in October, 1849, Brigham Young asked Parry to organize a choir to sign at future conferences. Parry started with 85 fellow Welsh to form what we know as the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Cymru am byth!!!
Thanks for your historic insights. They add new depth to my heart and ears. Sent with love. CVD

My heritage (I'm American) is from several parts of the UK and Ireland (as well as Spain and The Netherlands.) I'm struck by the strong musical tradition of Wales. This absolutely sends shivers down the spine. I'm a non-practicing Catholic, but I feel like I should stand when I hear this. Breathtaking :-)
That song reminds me a lot my childhood in Argentina ...
