- Headlights NOT Working or Working Sporadically? It could be your GM headlight switch. In this video I tell you the symptoms and how to change out the switch. You will need a T20 Torx and a Phillips screwdriver to complete this job. Good Luck!
Good fix!! Stuff like this always happens at the worst times too. What ever grease/lubricant they have on the contacts inside the switch had dried up, so the contacts get resistive which leads to heat and enough of a voltage drop stuff doesn't work anymore. One tip: if you have any Dielectric Grease, use a thing layer when you have those push on wire to switch connectors. It's a great stuff to prevent flakey electrical connect from corrosion. Also helps spark plug boots come off easier. Take Care!
All I wanna say is thank you for your video. I followed you step-by-step and I was able to fix the switch on my truck. Thank you.
Thank you for posting this up. I have a 1994 gmc 3500 and it did the same thing. I wouldn't have known where to start to diagnose this issue. Again THANK YOU so much. Most helpful
I’ve been smelling that burnt smell for a while now. Getting ready for a long trip across the mountain pass this morning, my lights started doing exactly what yours did. Will R&R once on the other side. Thanks for the insight.
Mine has been great since I changed it.
Also in the summertime that hot melt glue you put on there it's going to get soft and when you go to turn your lights on it's going to fall out
This really helps me fix the same problem on my `94 c1500. Thanks for sharing!
I got 97 GMC Sierra and for awhile now my daytime running lights stopped working and I replaced the little black relay underneath the dash hoping that was the fix but it wasn’t. I ignored until my headlights started going out randomly while driving. I sometimes have to jiggle the switch just to get them to come on again but it’s getting annoying and it’s dangerous. So I’m going to buy the switch today. Hopefully that fixes it.
1990 Cheyenne
Just started having this problem thanks for the video 👍
Thanks for the informative video,I'm having the same problem on my 94 Cheyenne, ordered another switch today
Good luck!
Thanks my man! My 93 had the oppisite as you. Headlights were running fine, but my instrument lights would not turn on.
Great video!! Much appreciated 👍
You're welcome!
Same issue. Headlights, brake lights, turn signals all work fine, just no dash light or tail lights. I will replace switch but also check the wires running to the switch connectors. 🙏 That fixes it. Another youtuber showed that he replaced the switch but no fix, found there is a small black ground wire UNDER dash far behind pigtail wires near bottom of steering column. He sanded and cleaned the ground connection and it all started working again
@@honorafox4709 That's exactly my problem with my 93 Blazer k1500
Im having a problem with my dome lights and the light under the dash neither work any help
Perfect! Thank you for your expertise! 😁
Shockingly this helps il look into it since mine was smoking and burning parking lights wont come on at all
Is the super glue always necessary?
I was in town yesterday pulling my cargo trailer to have trailer checked out for parts it will need. I have a 93 Chevy Silverado and I knew before I left home that I had no lights---thus I only drove with plenty of sunshine. I get to the trailer business and explain to the owner my problems. And so he and an employee checked it out and he said that the light switch is bad. I walk to the Auto Parts Store and buy a new switch, install it and turn it on and it gets hot and started to smoke so I quickly turned it off and took it out. I took it back and explained what happened and they sent for a new one. I walked back to my truck and waited for it to get there. I got the 2nd light switch installed and I turned it on and only the headlights and front lights are on, but no rear truck lights and no trailer lights.I walk back to the cab and feel the light switch and it's hot again but not smoking. So I quickly turned it off and took it out and I was burned by it, it was so hot. So I'm back to where I started with no lights, just blinkers and brakes. There's a problem with the truck wiring somewhere and now to hire a business to search for the problems and fix them.
Also, you do NOT need to pull the radio for this fix. Everything stays in place.
Could this be the reason my brake lights no longer work when I turn on the headlights?
If it's only when the headlight switch is on it could be this switch. If the brake lights are not working at all it could be the a fuse, brake pedal switch, or bulbs. Good luck.
Did you find the problem with your break lights not turning on? Everything else works expect my back lights
@@corpuscuhh6598 It could be a fuse or the brake pedal switch.
I had the same problem on my 1994 cheyenne, only the dash board dimmer switch is actually the culprit, it gets hot enough to burn your fingers when you turn it up to light up your gauges, and it weakens those mounting screws on the back of the dash bezle, it might be the reason why your headlight switch failed, the dimmer switch has cooling fins on it but theyre not worth a 💩, theyre just an aftert thought.
Does anyone what size the 4 small screws those are that hold the switch
wondering the same thing
On those mounts I always reinforce with JB Weld.
Thanks my parking lights just went out tonight....fuse is still good
I have the same year truck. Question: Is the switch illuminated when the lights are on?
No
Have running lights but no headlights
Does anyone out there know of any videos on how to test a neutral safety switch for an auto transmission on a 94 Silverado k1500. I can find everything else on a manual transmission but not an auto. Any help sure would be appreciated.
You can disconnect it from the column and manually flip the switch to see if its working. You have to leave it connected to the wiring harness but disconnect the bolts that hold it on. Good luck.
Thank you, I took the backup light switch of the column and left it connected to the harness but I still dont have reverse lights. I also replaced the turn signal switch inside the column and I seen a silver clip come off with a band attached to it and now the gear selector doesnt move. I thought maybe this has to be engaged as well along with the backup light switch for the reverse lights to work. Also what position does the switch need to be in , Ive tried to line it up with the clicks on the shifter being in reverse and basically guessing where reverse is on the switch. So does the shifter have to be in the corect position for the reverse lights to work then or does it matter.@@TheHandsOnChannel
Just happened to me. It's like you were there with me 😂
94 Chevy Astro. Way different configuration on my van.
Does switch effect tail lights?
Yes it can.
@@TheHandsOnChannel I accidentally left parking light's on one night cause none of them or tail lights was working. Got up early noticed lights on camera went outside everything working?
@@TheHandsOnChannel what's ur theory sir on that one. So il flipped switch off everything went off then flipped it back on and nothing but headlights came on.....
yup
Where's the diagnosis, I miss the part where you say this wire is signal and that one is ground and so......
I changed my light switch and still no dashboard lights
Can you tell us the part number ???
Thank you sir!
Why don't you try it first before you snap the dash back in
Thanks it help a lot
That looks just like my Chevy, even the dash carpet and my headlights not working!

Just one of those times it's worth paying extra to have the problem behind ya!
