The snakefish that you saw is called "Vaam" fish in Maharashtra. It has lots of bones and you have to be careful when eating it. it is a very tasty fish.
When it comes to Kovalam beach, the fishermen became very greedy over the years. I used to stay in kelambakkam 5 years before and by then the fish rates were very cheap. It's total waste of time to go to Kovalam for buying fish . Better go to the small seashores in ECR where you can get fished for much cheaper rates
