I got my first meerschaum pipe this week, and I absolutely love it. I like briar pipes a lot, but there is something special about the meerschaum; the flavor is very clean, and it absorbs a lot of moisture. I will definitely be buying more of them, and I'm also happy to support these talented craftsmen.
seriously the best job ever. I wish i can just find a job where i can be my artsy fartsy introverted self all day long and love every minute of it !!! I would love to look into meerschaum carving and try it for fun.
Superb craftsmanship, what a great video, I’ve learned something new today because I had no idea of this process, it helps you understand why they are so expensive and worth every penny, thank you 🙏🏻 for posting this.
Besim Aktaş, who comes from a good handicrafts family of 4 generations, died at the age of 58 in his hometown Turkey-Eskişehir-Tepebaşı-Sepetçi in 2017. Father of Turkish Meerschaum. Rest in piece. Allah rahmet eylesin.
Unfortunately, so many think they can rush the process artificially. Is sad. Either buy a nicely coloured estate for yourself, or buy a well sourced and well made new one, and smoke it not thinking of the colouring. Enjoy it. When you're old, you can pass the beautiful, lovingly smoked (and coloured) piece on as an sentimental family heirloom. : )
I've been looking for a meerschaum of that exact style. The video discription says this company is no longer in production. Do you have any suggestions where I can find one just like the one in this video?
The stone is much harder than one would suppose from watching the video. Carving it is not easy. One can ream the tobacco cake from a meerschaum pipe quite aggressively without marring the bowl.
***** It also looked like he might have heat treated them somehow. So maybe it just carves that easily in it's natural state and then gets baked for durability? I don't know I've only got three pipes and their all briar.
I have one meerschaum pipe. It isn't really as fragile as it looks in the video. I think that they are dried and the material gets a bit harder. Still, I only use a meerschaum at home. My pipe is a claw holding a bowl, so it has some delicate detail, I imagine a plain bowl wouldn't be so dear as to worry about getting broken.
WootTootZoot I think I know the pipe you're talking about. I thought about getting one, but Washington state seems hell bent on not letting anyone smoke. Unfortunately I live next to the reservation so tobacco is plentiful and I have any number of woodworking tools so I'd like to see them stop me.
Actually not, I'm also producer if you write jyeshtameerschaum in etsy shop, you could see many of models,I can not share links due to add restriction.
haha i wish i could find someone to send me a block of meerschaum so i can make one haha the only kits i can find are predrilled but i just want a block
Looks too soft. No wonder it fell out of fashion. Can't believe the waste. 80% ? No point in trying to make one. Too much trial and error in the firing.
It's probably traditional Turkish music ( don't quote me) but it would correspond with the fact that the best meerschaum pipes are made in turkey, so it isn't really what you would call "Fucked up". It would only make sense, you wouldn't have rap over this.

Always humbling to watch a craftsman at work...
Looks like the ideal carving material. Great to watch a craftsman at work.
Nice classic shapes. I like them much more than the extreme carved things normally come from Turkey.
Wow! What an art form. Some of these pipes are just beautiful.

Very nice Turkish music. I like this best! Mining and carving meerschaum is a tough process.
Wonderful video showing the pipes being carved! Thanks for uploading!
Great vid. Skilled craftsmen are a joy to watch.

Great video, it's always nice to see a true craftsman at work.
Very interesting video! Take care! Peace from Welland Ontario Canada 🇨🇦
You make pipes? I live in BC...may be a customer :)
total respect for the master
Meravigliose e bellissimo il video sulla lavorazione...tutta fatta a mano con la grande esperienza e Arte 😊

Father of Turkish Meerschaum.
Rest in piece.
Allah rahmet eylesin.
That is bad. I will visit Turkey and I wanted to visit the meerschaum pipe makers. Sad to hear that he died. Allah rahmet eylesin.
what a beautiful pipe!
Such a master piece
With the sound off it was a great video! ☝🏼
I need more meerschaum. Thanks for sharing.
Simply beautiful.
A very good worker!
Lindo trabalho!
Well done !
Meerschaum is a very soft stone, it seems.
I'm confused. He started with a huge block and whacked away most of it to make bowl and stem seat. Why not make two from the same block?
Its not how it works
Very nice brother
Meerschaum is softer than wood?
You can't BS a meerschaum pipe. A dark brown/gold-colored pipe has been smoked lovingly hundreds of times. That's why I like them.

ein sehr gutes Video, ich danke dir!
Gruß Daniel
I with they'd voice-over the steps, saying what they're doing & why.
Hi Im wondering how easy is broken meerschaum pipe?if you drop it from 30 cm,can you damage one ?
Useful video. The dust is dangerous, when using sandpapers why they don't wear a musk?
Weerschaum pipes smoke wonderfully...
how curious. I've never seen a non-ornately carved meerschaum.
Altinok makes some great non-fancy meerschaums.

WHOA! That's stone!? I've had boxwood that didn't carve that easy. Meerschaum pipes must be FRAGILE.

I think I have read that if you wet the stone first it makes its easier to manipulate and carve

I thought the pipes stay in the bees wax bath alot longer. Didn't seem long enough to permeate.
That's very satisfying video, except song! :D
It's like soap carving for the pro's
Do you ship to UK , nice work.
We simply must support traditional artisans
nice video, is it ok if I use it on my channel
Amazing!!
Now, load a moon rock in that there pipe and give it a puff!
Что это за материал? Похоже на белую редьку..
Those are very nice, where are they made and where could I purchase some
On the internet there are people who still make and sell. Even export
Does he have a website? ..
Usta güzel yapti
What's the red thing he puts all the stummels in?
To cool!👍🍭🐓
Nice Work
Said they shut down, I would have loved to own one.
Che legno ha usato?
Sweet.
Seems like a lot of wasted meerschaum though 😔
Andrew Truax quite expensive and stupid tbh
The meerschaum isn’t wasted, they gather all the loose pieces and shavings and press it back into blocks to create pressed meerschaum pipes.
where can I get this stuff? For real somone help!
¿What price or value have a pipe like this?
Like 200 - 1000 us dollors
neden etilgen seni pipe?
I’ll probably carve one like that during my lunch hour
Looks like soap carving
what is the material....stone, wood, clay?
meerschaum is the material
@@matthewwittmer5584 bro...this comment is 9 yrs old. lol
What is the pipe being dipped in at 5:50? Is it carnauba?
paraffin as I know
Thanks. I also heard that some people like beeswax. Just curious.
+P CC no problem. I'm carving one on my own, so I try to learn more about how to carve it. Where did you hear that?
I think I read that on pipedia maybe. I might be mistaken though. I only ask because I thought paraffin was white and that wax looked yellow.
BTW, where did you get the meerschaum? Is it a block or a kit? I saw someone is selling some pre-ban blocks for about $50.
so sad the production has closed. 😔
Actually not, I'm also producer if you write jyeshtameerschaum in etsy shop, you could see many of models,I can not share links due to add restriction.
Muhammad Rashid kontol kata siapa
😍😍😍
haha i wish i could find someone to send me a block of meerschaum so i can make one haha the only kits i can find are predrilled but i just want a block
Çok isterdim böyle bi sanatı icra etmeyi
I was expecting to see a corncob pipe...
Id rather have a corncob honestly, but I'm a mechanic, so...
Corncobs are soooo shitty
We are not in Missouri lol
can I guy buy some of this on ebay
If you would like buy fake and even toxic ones , ebay maybe is your best choice:)
That's not true, not all the Meerschaum pipes in ebay are cheap and toxic.
@JefferyWylde as i remove my comment i must now appologize :)

Turkey.
Brier pipes
Looks too soft. No wonder it fell out of fashion. Can't believe the waste. 80% ? No point in trying to make one. Too much trial and error in the firing.
And a briar is any different?
(Or you're just trolling, and don't actually smoke a pipe?)
Let me find the biggest piece and whittle 80% of it away, dumb.
i actually had to turn the volume off
why sir...beautiful music...yes it is not western ...
+ZEUS Apolo agreed
+ZEUS Apolo maybe he wanted Justin Timberlake as a background music?
Why? I liked the music
be ok, except for the fucked up music.
belknapdlg26 better than bieber.
