My old Sweetwater rep was AWESOME! He always gave me great deals. One time, I found a site selling a T-Rex Replicator Tape Delay, the one with the tapes, original big version. It was $300 off, so I called my rep because I wanted to purchase it from him. He said there was no deal on it and that the company selling it such a discount was doing so against the relationship agreement with the company. Still, however, my rep sold me the pedal at their cost, so they made no money on it, I got it for less than half what it cost. Which was freaking crazy!! Sadly, he moved on and I haven't really made any big purchases from my new rep. He did give me a deal on a couple patch cable kits, but I haven't spent any real money on gear since my old rep left, I really liked him. I'd call him just to talk and see how he was doing and he did the same for me, great relationship. My new rep never calls, so I don't either anymore.

@@andrewshell788yeah, really! I find it super annoying, getting spammy calls & messages from them, trying to entice me to buy shit. Like, if I needed something or had a question, they'd hear from _me_ ..shouldn't be the other way around.

It is a buyer's market. In fact, some shops if you add your item to your cart and leave it there.. you will get either an email or a call offering you a discount to "complete" the transaction. Once you get that email or call, you now have a little more room to negotiate a higher discount. I bought in December a brand new Les Paul Modern Figured Cobalt Burst shipped to me for $2440 that lists for $2999. This model is a brand new one listed on Gibson's site. All it took it was a two minute call speaking to the shop's owner/manager to get that discount and that two minutes included him processing my paypal payment. :)

Phil- I didn't buy a UAFX Lion this month so I could take these classes from Tim. Then- just before I signed up- the dentist called and was like "Get in here tomorrow morning and we'll get those teeth out." So really- your suggestion causing me to procrastinate ended up allowing me to get 3 teeth out that have been giving me hell for about a year now. Thank you- as soon as my mouth heals, I'll sign up for the classes and kick you a few bucks.

Hey Phil, just to let you know that I find the Tim Pierce Masterclass absolutely brilliant. Thanks for the tip! I signed up for the trial and both myself and my son are enjoying it so much we've already decided to go for the full year sub! Can thoroughly recommend it to anybody regardless of skill level. He is an amazing teacher and I find myself going for "Oh just one more lesson before bed" and then realising I'm gonna be a very tired man at work when I've spent another hour and a half playing :-D

Sweetwater’s customer service tanked hard after they got bought out. I won’t mention my sales reps name but I have been buying from him for years, and dad who is a musician had the same rep. They wouldn’t return calls or emails when I was literally trying to throw money at them. Asking to plek and upgrade the guitar I was ordering, wanted to add in a hard case. He never replied, I just got an email saying it was shipped with none of the extra things. It arrived, and he never callled or email to check to see if I got it and how I liked it or anything. Just radio silence. I use reverb and musicians friend now. Musicians friend will give discounts and has reward points. I have zero reason to ever when consider sweetwater ever again.

46:50 "Tribute" by Ozzy... it is an absolute gem, capturing Randy Rhoads in full flight. I wept when I first heard it in 1987 (I wasn't really into Ozzy, and lived in a place that had no rock radio etc). It was my first foray into Randy's music after reading about it for a couple of years.

That story you told about ghost guitarists and playing recorded parts on stage reminded me of back in the 70s when Molly Hatchet came out with a few very accomplished, almost technical southern rock tracks and everybody really dug it. My brother went to see them play the Cabooze Bar in Minneapolis and reported back that they couldn't play their own songs. I've always thought you shouldn't record stuff you can't reproduce as I'm pretty straight forward though I have seen creative use of pre-recorded material in live shows (especially verbal narration with spacey background being in song intro).

    • @joeyvanostrand3655
      @joeyvanostrand3655 6 месяцев назад +1

Creative being the keyword. If it "helps" or adds to the show, killer! Awesome! If yer' up there miming along to a track of YOUR OWN MUSIC!?!! A fella is gonna think ya suck.
Molly Hatchet couldn't pull it off? What album, may I ask. I don't doubt you at all, I'm Just curious.
The dudes in Warrant (80's hair rock band) had a REALLY good ghost player on their first two albums playing the solos and the noodles. Live, they either fudged the the parts they could t play yet or butchered them. Took them about 5 years of dedicated practice I till they were up to snuff. The lead player Joey is now a certified badass.

Good time to buy!!....My local Guitar Center has scratch and dent guitars Half off(like $900 guitars too, not $400 stuff), and I just got a used Gibson case for almost Nothing!...I actually had to ask the manager what's going on......he told me they have too much X-mas left overs, and too much over stock coming in. I've noticed most of the Used guitars are Way below retail at my store.

Deals on new guitars at Sweetwater also depend on how well that particular guitar model is selling. If they’re moving the discount is less. I often present the rep with two or three options in my wish list, and ask what they can do for each. I may not get my absolute fav this way, but that just means I can’t afford that guitar today.

I've only successfully pulled off an ask for a deal from sweetwater on stuff that is either a demo model or a scratch and dent.
ON my orange rocker 32 it was a demo listed for 999 and I asked the rep to spread out the taxes on all 3 payments and he couldn't and I responded with, well I can only put this much down today and the rep lowered it another 100$ on the total price just so i could afford the first payment.
    That was clutch.

I was "meh" about Cheap Trick, but saw them at AstroWorld in Houston. AWESOME. But the best live band... KISS. "Alive" broke them as a band. I saw them, my first concert, when I was 8 (1976), at the Baton Rouge Centroplex. AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!

What you're talking about from musician's Friend in guitar center is exactly what happened to me. My PRS 24 - 088 SE came with fingerprints all over it. Scratches. And it wasn't even buffed out. Someone must have broken the strings because it came with another set. So I didn't get the joy of taking the plastic off of the pickups. And 3 days later when I flew to houston, the gig bag did not have the hook in the back of it. I told them about it and they said they don't know anything. If they were not backed up at sweetwater, I would have given it back in the 45 days. And got one from Sweetwater.. I have pretty much sworn off internet guitars. It would have been my first and last time buying one online, but... Fender put the squire stratsphonic on sale for $300 in that beautiful blue. But that is my last online non-sweet water purchase.

Dug the "DIY Vibe" on a few of this Episode's topics! As a semi-retired ASE Master Tech (auto), I totally agree about accurate "diagnosis"! Gotta "shelve" the EGO, be patient AND observant to arrive @ the correct answer! I've also found that the (often) "Lo-Fi Sonic Quality" many live recordings have stems from post-production "choices" (mainly re: EQ'ing). When corrected on my DAW, it's like hearing the performance again for the FIRST TIME!

I enjoy listening to you, Phil. I just wish I'd seen/heard this when Tim had the deal going. I got another RUclips legend's program and it was *#!&%. But Tim is humble and explains things well. And he's mega-talented. But I never seem to catch his deals. I was a "guitar hero" in the '70's and could noodle things out, but never really learned to play. Now I'm retired. And I have time to learn. You've taught me a whole lot (I feel confident when I work on my guitars- all cheap ones), thanks to you!

I think the audience would love to see a deep dive on an “Edwards” guitar by ESP. They’re made in Japan at the same factory with the same specs as a lot of E-ii models, but only sold to the Japanese market for similar or less than LTD prices. The few YT videos about them all say they’re incredible instruments just like the E-ii’s & possibly the best value high end guitars on reverb.

Ain’t that the truth. My Dad had a few small pieces of marine plywood we used for outdoor stuff in the yard growing up. He had them for 15 years out in the weather before they finally fell apart.

Great show as usual Phil. I'm not a guitar repair person, but I would think that it works similar to car repair. Car repair has something called the labor rate or "book" rate that is the standard hourly rate for a particular repair item. It's in the repair business' best interest to fix something in less hours, but still charge the "book" rate. They get paid more for the work and get more repairs done in a day. Some items are specialized and don't really have a "book" rate. Such as troubleshooting electrical problems. They will charge for ALL the time it takes to find and fix it. I'm sure guitar repair is the same. There are the usual repairs with a going rate. They try to fix in under the usual time. So maybe some special or not common jobs will take a lot of hours, they have to charge for all that time and since they may not be good at it the price to fix will be too high or maybe they won't charge for all the time and end up losing money in the long run when they could make more money doing many setups. Whew, Sorry. Hope someone finds this helpful.

Well that is just it, if I EQ or slightly move a dial on a pedal A, it will be more like pedal B. The tonal differences ARE mostly very slight. Moving a predelay can make a pedal change character, moving the impedance can make it different. Changing to another cab will be different. Having a Helix or other will have slew of amps and all have tonal characters of some pedals. Its crazy the way we obsess over this.

I read somewhere online - I think it was on a former sale's engineers blog - that any sweetwater wheel and deal discounts come out of the sales reps commission and not out of the company's cut . . . so, he or she is really taking the$$ hit out of their own pocket, not the corporation's.

Speaking of Sweetwater, I bought one of the Epiphone Adam Jones LP and unfortunately it’s got a bad defect that makes it almost unplayable. I’m sending it to their techs to look at and since there are no more of these particular guitars to swap out so I’m quite curious to see how they will handle it

1:00:07 @ Phillip McKnight and Nycgeology I think it was...I don't own PRS but you missed the boat as to difference in coil split and even will give something find interesting for winding pickups. Add resistor in k value to ground to add how much dead coil you wish keep. Example 8k res p.a.f. 4 k split too weak. Add 2.2k resistor to ground get 6.6k total .PRS used 2.2 k bridge 1.1neck Fralin used 7k I think. That's why sounds different"better" as not simple split but a split and half so to speak

Sweetwater for me has always been hit or miss on price. That said, the one thing that keeps me going back to them is the customer service. It's the best I've ever experienced. I bought a black w gold Les Paul. It arrived the next day and there were swirl marks on the front and back on the body. I called my rep. He asked me to select another one from the site, (they had 4 in stock) and he'd overnight it to me after personally inspecting it. Boom, the next day it showed up and it was perfection. He told me to play both for a couple of days and decide which one I wanted to keep. He added that if I liked the first one better, I could send it back and they'd buff out the swirl marks. No one has C/S like that. I'll pay extra knowing they have my back, well worth it to me.

I walked into Guitar Center last week trying to buy a new Strat, and they pulled the guitar from the back and it was opened. I asked to make sure all of its contents were in the box and the tremolo arm was missing. He asked me if it’s a deal breaker. I said “I am buying it new aren’t I? Is it cool if stuff is missing when you buy new stuff? “ long story short, walked out and ordered it from Sweetwater. Won’t go back there again.

Sweetwater will make deals. Timing is everything. When an item is being discontinued or on demos, you can get 10-20% off. You just need to keep an eye out. It's still the first place I check becase of its service & return policies. There are cheaper places. Example: I got 15% off a Jazzmaster 1 month before the 60th Anniversary series premiered. Nobody knew about the new series except the top dealers, like Sweetwater. Timing & demos. Keep your eye out. But for price only - there are cheaper dealers.

Sweetwater is a joke. Just got the new pacifica standard plus with back bowed neck and high frets. sent it back and was gonna buy the Schecter california classic. They offered $50 off. Musicians friend was $375 off instantly. No limit guitars in Idaho $250 off. They use this so called 55 point inspection as a way to keep their prices up. My Schecter Blackjack shows up and the 3 way didnt work, got my Schecter sun valley from thier shop after being plekd, it was out of intonation, action on high E was 6mm at the 12th and the Floyd Rose was close to being level with the body. My heritage h-150 shows up with the action at .090 on high E at the 12th and .100 on the low E. Factory specs are .030 and .040 on a Heritage. The public is getting screwed on the 55 point BS and Sweetwater is scooping up on bulk sales and percentage! They've lost me as a customer. Depending on the brand check out Micarelli music in PA. They will not sell a guitar with fret sprout or a high fret. They send them back so you as the customer wont have too.
