I absolutely love Xena and Gabrielle. It still gives me chills when I see Gabrielle in action. She was this innocent virtue and later became a stronger woman that could kick ass!
I started watching the show when I was about....6 or 7 years old. And I asked my mother to have my hair cut like hers. THAT was only the beginning. I got punished at school once, because one of my classmates had stolen a pen to one of my very best friends and I just kicked him in the balls, screaming as Xena did (laalalalala) to have that pen back. Then, while we were at the beach I used to throw my frisbee to people (mostly on their neck, dont know why) pretending it was my Charkram, just for the fun of hurting them. My mother was so worried! Now, 15 years later, I still watch the show and sometimes I still do that scream while playing with my nephew!
I still don't understand why people think that "a strong female character in a lead roll" doesn't work. Even after we had "Charlie's Angels" in the 70's and even "Honey West" in the 60's. And I think this attitude still exists. Sad Thanks for uploading by the way. I loved it.
Saying that people thought "a strong female character in the lead" won't work lacks evidence. We have no evidence of people saying or promoting that idea. It's propaganda fan-speak to make the show sound even more groundbreaking. I love the show, but saying there were no prior female super heroes is wrong. Proclaiming "no one else has done this before" is meant to evoke excitement and make you want to join the Xena bandwagon!
I know this comment is old but....Wonderwoman, Charlie's Angels, Catwoman, Ripley, Xena, Sarah Conner, Mulan... all of them were pretty iconic for their time periods. Strong female leads work if they are well written. And that's why a lot of these new adapted female superheros dont really work or hollywood acts stuck up about them. They arent taking time to write them & put thought into them like they did in older shows and movies. Whether these female leads have an imperfect past, or they seem all around perfect and invincible but still seem likeable and relatable..it work if well written. I also just think so many people are against strong female leads now or they say "it doesnt work" because they automatically assume feminism or don't like the idea of a woman out performing a man, even though it's FICTION lol. Also when they write female heroines now, they do it in such a way that they arent likeable. Theyre perfect or badazz with little to no conflict or arch to develop their character. They aren't relatable or show any struggle to become who they are. Oldschool heroines are awesome....and they did well with the new version of Wonderwoman. But I cant name too many new age heroines on the screen now that they adapted well other than Nebula from GOTG, maybe Daneryus if I spelled that right from GOT before they ruined her character 😭, Disney's Brave (forgot her name lol), and Maleficient in the first movie. That's all I can really think of off the top of my head.
I just love how the episodes and Seasons evolved as the series progressed. It came along at the right time and became very successful for all genders. The fighting and martial arts stunt sequences were very well done especially in an age that did not yet use CGI and far beyond what you would expect from a TV series. The on location visuals and settings were breathtaking (New Zealand is a beautiful country) and this helped create immersion and realism beyond what a TV series of its time may have done. Also kudos to the excellent camera work using closeup filming to its advantage. For the most part the scripts and stories were well written and acted. Finally, the chemistry between Lucy Lawless (Xena) and Renee O'Conner (Gabrielle) was a match made in heaven; true soulmates. The supporting actors were also very well cast and acted. I still watch several of the episodes to this day on DVD and they are still a great entertainment value. Well done to all cast and crew and may God bless Kevin Smith. He was a fine actor and made a superb Ares. 🤘👍
Xena was my idol. my hero. She taught me that you can be a woman and strong and beautiful. A lot of shows tried to be like Xena with a tough female lead example Buffy. But Xena was the one I wanted to be when I grew up. I even dressed as Xena when I was 14. Battle on Xena, you are my hero. :)
I missed xena so much, there is nothing like it! Lucy lawless and Hudson were even more beautiful in person ! I was so obsessed I went to the xena convention a few times😊
Here in 2021! Rewatched the much beloved Xena series during quarantine. Feeling really connected to these incredible characters but also researching the actors and crew to get to know the real people behind the magic! This was a really cool insight, thank you!
I can't believe how successful this show was. I think that we need more shows like this nowadays. Great stories, great action, true words of wisdom and a fantastic cast with an amazingly talented and independent female lead. I honestly feel like TV degraded after shows like this stopped being made. It feels like TV is having a renaissance right now with shows like Game of Thrones and breaking bad but I don't think it will last.
This video is only about Season One in fact. It's an exclusive bonus from the Deluxe Colletor's Edition boxset of the first season, with interviews with the scriptwriters who worked on it. The importance of Gabrielle grew up in following seasons and there are plenty of others bonuses on the others boxsets. Of course without Gabrielle it wouldn't have been the same show at all.
I didn't become interested in the "Xena" show until last year, and now I love watching it! Particularly interesting to me are the fight scenes, and the stunt work by Zoe Bell and Co. That being said, it's too bad there doesn't seem to be any documentaries that discuss the making of "The Ring Trilogy": I would love to see how they pulled off the sky battle with the horses and Valkyries in "The Rheingold", and how they choreographed the fight scenes with Odin and the Valkyries in "The Ring" and "Return of the Valkyrie". It also would have been interesting to get the viewpoints of, say; Alexander Petersons ("Odin") and Victoria Hill ("Waltraute" the Valkyrie).
I first saw this show when I was twelve years old. She was such an inspiration to me, she still is. It teaches women to be strong and they can do anything they put their mind to do. My favorite show of all time.
They're mentioning how new they were to all of this, made mistakes, etc. etc. but I've enjoyed every minute (of course, I'm biased). Xena will always be my #1 T.V. show. They did good!
This was awesome, I loved learning about all the behind the scenes. Mad props to Everyone who worked on the show, it's an iconic part of tv history, and they did a phenomenal job!
Thank gals a girl's that you all were behind the scenes of ONE OF THE MOST ICONIC SHOWS EVER CREATED!!!!! Thank you.!!! I'm a xenite have been since the show started. I love Lucy, Renee and all the actors in it. But if it wasn't for guys and girls it wouldn't have been Epic. Thank you all!!!🤤🤤
In 4th grade I dressed up as xena for haloween, some other girl did the same thing I was really pissed so I did her war cry and tryed to do that flying kick xena dose so well and I just flopped on the floor. But this show has inspired me a lot and I've got into a lot of cool stuff because of it
I have always asked the same question: Why Vanessa was the first choice if Lucy Lawless had already played Xena in Hecules, so being her the ones that made the Show come on> It makes no sense! People were already used to seeing Lucy as Xena. I ha]ve not gotten a good explanation for that!
Tbh, Gabrielle was my favorite. Don't get me wrong, I love Xena, and I just couldn't stop crying at the ending of the show, but it's kind of frustrating how it's always Xena Xena Xena... She got all of the hot guys, she got all of the compliments about her beauty, she got all the acknowledgment... While Gabrielle was only in the background. I think Gabrielle was a very loving character, and she is by far my favorite.
Remember season 6 when basically everyone was in love with Gabrielle and she also became the Battling Bard and took Xena's place in the end? I love Gabrielle too. She was underrated throughout most of the series and at times even Xena condescended to her, but when the series started, Gabrielle was a girl. By the end, she's a woman. Xena was a woman throughout the whole show. By the end, it's made clear that Gabrielle is Xena's successor and is not only a Warrior, but has a balance of heart and strength.
It is frustrating that they barely talk about Renee at all here. She's an excellent actress and carried a lot of the drama and emotion in the show. She played an equal part in making the show what it was an put her whole self into the fights and emotional depth.
so awesome to learn more about the show, this show did teach lessons to everyone and even when they said the finished better than when they started, I wouldn't of had it any other way the show is amazing hopefully they'll listen to the fans on facebook and make a movie! or another seaon
I loved this show I plan to get this entire series when I get the money saved up I love Hercules too because Kevin Zorbo's Hercules is more real and not some guy pumped up full of steroids. But Xena is my all time favorite show. Lucy was perfect for the role couldn't have cast a better actress Vanessa Angel as Xena the show would've died. My favorite was not only Xena and Gabrielle but Xena and Callisto as well.
Great show and I would love to see a movie in theaters about this character. It would be interesting to see either a mythological point of view, just like the series did, or a stripped down perspective like what was seen in the Hercules movie with The Rock.
lol my mom sister and I used to watched the show every morning before she went to work and us to school. she still has the Xena necklace I gave her for mothers day when I was 12 lol
Wonder Woman after school surely paved the way.... from her island ancient mythological female warriors. Mix in some Braveheart. Way ahead of Game of Thrones coming out.
I miss the show. On one of my vacations back in 2002 I went to Tappahannic, WV with my girlfriend and I went into a bar there. Soon as we got ready to sit down then a couple woman in there started to do the "Xena Warrior Princess Yell." My girlfriend didn't have a clue what was going on but " I DID." I YELLED BACK, "XENA IN THE HOUSE." My girlfriend was scared and felt out of element in a really BIG WAY. A lot of those West Virginia girls in there looked and dressed like Xena. I had a good time there. " IT WAS HOT."
I never saw Xena as some rabid feminist. Not at all. She was just a terrific, strong, super hero! The show was just great! Like many shows the first few years were the best!!!
Lucy broke her pelvis is '96 after falling off her horse, which really affected season 2. Probably did her own stunts on horseback before that.. (I've not watched this entire video yet, so if says something otherwise, then ignore this comment haha. XD)

Hercules sucked, he was lame, wasn't attractive, and too soft...Xena was the opposite. Entertaining, sexy, funny, powerful and thrilling. If Ares was Hercules would've be better. Joxer annoyed the eff out of me...other than that I loved everyone on it. Yup.
I can watch Xena a million times and never get tired of it it's my one and only all-time show
I absolutely love Xena and Gabrielle. It still gives me chills when I see Gabrielle in action. She was this innocent virtue and later became a stronger woman that could kick ass!

That's a GREAT story!!!
lool thank you!
that was hardcore from start to finish hahahaha
I love this lol
hahahahahahahahaha
Still my favorite show 24 years later

Xena has been my hero since I was a little girl! Thanks for posting this, I love to learn more about the show!
This show is the best action series.. And i love Lucy Lawless so MUCHHHHH:)
I just discovered this show like a month ago and I love it
xena needs to come back RIGHT NOW. :( i miss this show so much...
ME TOO!!
They have the whole show on Netflix :)
thelastoneontheplane It's on both Netflix AND Hulu and you can watch every episode ever released PLUS the specials (if I'm correct).
Give it a look.
They could not make this today...

Xena is the reason I am a warrior princess now
I right away fell in love with the show when it came out. I just happened to catch the debut channel surfing. I was hooked.
I miss the Xena Pinch.
Thanks to the "dramamine director" we got the ladder fight which is one of the most iconic fight scenes in TV history.
They're mentioning how new they were to all of this, made mistakes, etc. etc. but I've enjoyed every minute (of course, I'm biased). Xena will always be my #1 T.V. show. They did good!
I just watched xena last year and I loved it remember seeing teasers for it too bad they don't make more shows like this.
chris gleason Games of Thrones feels like it to be honest.
loved this show growing up, the 1st shows to cross over that i could think of with hercules another great show
This was awesome, I loved learning about all the behind the scenes. Mad props to Everyone who worked on the show, it's an iconic part of tv history, and they did a phenomenal job!
Xena triggered my bisexuality I will always want her ♥
Thank gals a girl's that you all were behind the scenes of ONE OF THE MOST ICONIC SHOWS EVER CREATED!!!!! Thank you.!!! I'm a xenite have been since the show started. I love Lucy, Renee and all the actors in it. But if it wasn't for guys and girls it wouldn't have been Epic. Thank you all!!!🤤🤤
Go Lucy lawless so glad you left to do the unknown so the world could see how amazing of a person you are.
Are you kidding, everyone was like 'Gabrielle is such is a wonderful and unique human being, Xena you're so evil, you'll only get her killed"
In 4th grade I dressed up as xena for haloween, some other girl did the same thing I was really pissed so I did her war cry and tryed to do that flying kick xena dose so well and I just flopped on the floor. But this show has inspired me a lot and I've got into a lot of cool stuff because of it
lol
Your honesty is refreshing and your story was great! 😆 Keep kicking ass
A truly great show!!! Love watching over and over!!!

You misunderstood..... Vanessa Angel was the choice to play Xena for the 3 episode arc in Hercules and couldn't make it....
I understood it!
I am happy because Lucy is the best!
I think so too... nothing against Vanessa but I believe she wouldn't have measured up to this role....
i remember i was totally obsessed with xena in '98!
I watched this show in 2018 and fell in love
Tbh, Gabrielle was my favorite. Don't get me wrong, I love Xena, and I just couldn't stop crying at the ending of the show, but it's kind of frustrating how it's always Xena Xena Xena... I Love Xena: Warrior Princess ( 1995-2001) Xenite For Life!
Such a succinct introduction.
Wonder Woman after school surely paved the way.... from her island ancient mythological female warriors. Mix in some Braveheart. Way ahead of Game of Thrones coming out.

'it was much more interest to see a guy in distress and see a girl save her'
I am a fan of Xena.

He means it's hella gay

xena warriors princess is so amazing
Wow, where was this all this time? Thanks for posting

Xena Maven? What is a Xena Maven?
Lucy broke her pelvis is '96 after falling off her horse, which really affected season 2. Probably did her own stunts on horseback before that.. (I've not watched this entire video yet, so if says something otherwise, then ignore this comment haha. XD)
Xena: Warrior Princess was one of those shows that are far from SJW. How the hell did we go from Xena: Warrior Princess and Buffy The Vampire Slayer to Batwoman? Also, don’t get me started on Captain Marvel.

SJW philosophy has peppered western culture since the early 2000s and only recently become prevalent enough to affect Hollywood.
I like Batwoman. I think it’s about family.
I love Xena, but the narration is overdone. It wasn't "unthinkable" that an action drama could succeed with a female lead. Although rare, it wasn't inconceivable. There was already Sigourney Weaver who starred in the Aliens film franchise, Lindsey Wagner of the Bionic Woman and Lynda Carter as Wonder Woman. Xena wasn't the first, but she was still one of the best!
She was not the first female action hero. And it wasn't unthinkable back then...I guess my fault for expecting facts right off?
Hmmm.... Before there was Xena....There was Red Sonja....and about 2000 more. Like Xena was the 1st show to feature a strong woman or something??? Of course.... I was watching Arnold's Conan the Barbarian movies and such in the 80s. . . to me Xena was just a Greek version of Queen Himiko of ancient Japan...

I thought that past sequence with callisto and xena on horse was real and their own stunts!! Disappointing
What they didnt know is how to make real the subtext hehehehe
part3 missing... no point starting watching this :(
This video is a sausage fest.
