  • In Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, dimensions allow you to categorise financial transactions and add additional information to them.
Dimensions are user-defined attributes that can be assigned to various types of transactions, such as general ledger entries, sales orders, purchase orders, and more. These dimensions can be used to track information such as department, project, location, customer, vendor, or any other attribute that you want to track.
When you create a dimension, you define the values that can be used for that dimension. For example, you might create a dimension called "Department" and define the values "Sales," "Marketing," and "Operations." Once you have created dimensions, you can assign them to transactions as needed. For example, when you create a sales order, you can assign a department dimension to the order to track which department the sale is associated with.
Once you have assigned dimensions to transactions, you can use Business Central's reporting features to analyse financial data by dimension. You can create financial reports that group transactions by dimension, allowing you to see how much revenue, expenses, or profit is associated with each dimension. This can help you make informed business decisions by providing you with insights into how different aspects of your business are performing.
Overall, dimensions are a powerful tool for organising and analysing financial data in Business Central, and they can help you gain a deeper understanding of your business's performance.

Thank you. I’m working forwards the MB800 and having a hard time with this as it is slightly different than Analytical Accounting in GP.

I just checked out your video on Dimensions in BC - super helpful, thanks for sharing that.
Could you use Dimension also for a Business case where you Partners that offers Experience product at different branches and use the dimension to separte the accounting to pay our Partners?
Do you think Dimensions could work for this?

Great video thank you for putting it together.
Quick question, are you able to split an expense between two dimensions? For example, let's say Marketing and Finance share a subscription with Finance using 80% of the resources. Could I allocate 80% to the Finance Dimension and 20% to Marketing?

Hi, as far I believe you would have to do this as seperate lines. Line 1 Finance, Line 2 Marketing
